I believe that I ran an apt-get dist-upgrade to unstable(sid) and then did an apt-get install mozilla. I also installed the psm .deb. From what I've experienced so far, 0.9.5 is pretty fast. Not as fast as it is on Mac OS X, but fast. On an unrelated note, unstable has proven to be pretty stable. I also use FreeBSD quite a bit and Debian is the only GNU/Linux distro that seems to run as smoothly. If I could find a way to get apt/dpkg to tell me each .deb I have installed like pkg_info on FreeBSD does, I would say both OS's would be about equal in greatness. A RH package won't work on Debian
Here's a weird one, and I don't know that anyone can help but I can't think of anything else to try. So, I'm beta testing a new commercial VPN client for Linux. The official supported platforms are Red Hat (of course), plus Caldera and Turbo Linux IIRC. Others on the beta list have reported good success with SuSe and Mandrake as well. I'm the only one who can't get it working. It completely, utterly does not work on my Debian box. Any of the three of them (2 desktops and a laptop). All my boxes are running Woody of some moderately recent vintage. I borrowed a laptop with vanilla RH 6.2, and brought it home, and it works fine. Also if I boot my system into Windows and use the Windows version of the VPN client, that works fine. I can even open up a Windows session in VMWare on my Linux system and use the Windows client through that, and _that_ works! I've tried installing Red Hat kernels (the client has two kernel modules and two user-space daemons) on Debian. I've tried getting older versions of LIBC and setting LD_PRELOAD etc. to cause the VPN user-space apps to use them. No change in behavior. The thing _almost_ works: it connects to the VPN server, it installs local static routes (for split tunneling), I can even resolve DNS lookups from within the remote private LAN! But, any attempt to actually connect, using any protocol I've tried, simply hangs for a long time then times out. Remember it works under Windows in the exact same setup so it can't be a problem with my cable modem or ISP or anything like that, or even firewalling (besides, to be sure I completely disabled all my firewalls but it still failed). I'm thoroughly baffled. I just can't figure out what this thing might be looking for or expecting on the Red Hat system that it doesn't find or doesn't work the same way on Debian! The support folks are similarly baffled. I know it's an almost impossible long shot, but maybe someone here can give me some ideas of what to try or where to look? -- --- Paul D. GLE libraries
Hello all, I'm trying to compile the GLE libraries from source obtained at http://www.linas.org/gle/ and I'm having a few problems. The latest version (3.0.5) fails to compile due to a makefile error (no rule to make COPYING.src in all-am, I think), but 3.0.4 compiles and installs just fine. When I apt-get source xscreensaver and either do debian/rules build or ./configure make, etc. it complains that it finds only the headers but not the libraries for GLE. The headers install into /usr/local/include and the libs into /usr/local/lib, both of which should be fine, but just to make sure after a few failures, I added those paths to /etc/ld.so.conf and reran ldconfig. Still nothing but pain. Before I start doing something stupid, anybody have any pointers, or managed to get this going? Pointing me towards something I've missed, or even speaking very slowly in small words so that the deranged man doesn't flinch, would be greatly appreciated. AFAIK, the ones the system wants to deinstall are all dependent on perl5. if i'm right, perl is older than perl5 (woody has 5.6, i believe) It's basically not a good idea to mix potato and woody .debs. This seems to be a problem with the Ximian packages, which I can't really help you with. But I can tell you that last I checked, the mplayer GUI is rather incomplete and uh, sucky. It didn't seem to do much but play, pause, and look nice. :) Maybe they've got it doing more by now, but IMHO it's not that necessary. Use the fetchmailconf X front-end to create a ~/.fetchmailrc for yourself, which, to run as a system-wide daemon, you will then need to move to /etc/fetchmail. To get fetchmail working as a daemon after you've made your /etc/fetchmailrc, edit /etc/default/fetchmail to make the following changes: SERVICE=true RUNASROOT=true Or leave RUNASROOT=false and set up a fetchmail user account for the daemon to use. I haven't done that yet, though I should (it would help protect my system against any exploits in fetchmail that might be discovered and abused), so I can't tell you if there are any gotchas involved. Then, as root, execute /etc/init.d/fetchmail to start the daemon, and check syslog for errors. > I'm also on a DSL line that is always "up". I think I'd better stick to > using my ISP's smtp server. If mail is sent to an unqualified username (i.e. no @domain specified), exim will try to deliver it to a local account of that name. If the mail is addressed to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (where you is both your local username and your username at your-isp.com), then my guess is that it will probably be routed to your ISP's servers and back to you by default. After doing this, I had no problem with fully installing locales and the package that had originally alerted me to this problem.

Fetchmail apparently strips CR only when delivering to a named MDA - running it out of inetd apparently has it leave the CR in. Buried deep in the fetchmail manpage - line 1540 or so. RE: Is it possible to install a few testing packages on a stable machine?
Stan, Here's a cut-and-paste-and-slightly-edited version of what I found about almost the same question I asked on this reflector a week or two ago (see thread "RE: cproto.deb for potato not available?"): Scheme using newer version of apt-get than you probably have: It seems the /etc/apt/preferences file is a feature not yet in the stable release of apt-get (version 0.3.19). I found some information about the preferences file in a how-to document based on version 0.5.3 (chapter 3 of http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/), although I was still a little unclear about how to selectively upgrade a package using this feature. My guess is to use the example in the document for how to downgrade all packages to the stable release versions, then insert a specific entry for the latest version of, in my case, cproto. This is what I did to grab the cproto package from the unstable distribution (a little lower-level, but not too bad once in awhile). Hopefully the upgraded package you'll see in #3 won't be a package that will break other things it depends on if you upgrade it. 1. Added following line to sources.list: deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free 2. apt-get -s update The -s (=--dry_run) above seemed to have no effect because the cproto package *was* found in the next step (without update it is not found). 3. apt-get -s install cproto This showed me that apt-get would not upgrade or install any new packages except for cproto. 4. apt-get install cproto This installed the new package. 5. Commented out the line added in #1 I did this so that the next 'apt-get upgrade' won't upgrade me to the unstable release of all the packages I have installed. -Kris -Original Message- From: Stan Brown [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, November 09, 2001 1:16 PM To: debian-user@lists.debian.org Subject: Is it possible to install a few testing packages on a stable machine? I have a package that won't completely install or de-install. I think I know how it happened and have that problem fixed, but can't do anything with the package. I have tried to reinstall this package with all kinds of options and using dselect, dpkg and apt-get. I know that this package ties in with others, so of course i am concerned to fix it.

You could try changing your /etc/apt/sources.list to include woody, do an apt-get update , then a apt-get -s -u install abcde to see what would happen An alternative would be to try grip which I like even better than abcde Stan Brown wrote: I'm trying to get abcde to work. Hello all, I have some questions regarding system security. Besides of doing filtering with IP tables, disabling inet.d services like telnet, r-tools etc. and setting some general denials in /etc/hosts.deny (plus some other stuff like changing default ports of some demons like sshd), I am looking for some additional security options I can apply to a linux system. Especially, I am looking for a not-too-paranoid-to-setup-tool that can review my logfiles and report me via beep and/or local mail that it found something unusual in a log. Does anyone know of such a tool? Second, as a more theoretical question, is there any open source project available that can inspect network packages on application level, e.g. to detect virusses etc. (like sandboxes on huge firewall systems). I hope not to mix some termini, cos I am not that good in this network stuff...but I hope to learn from your answers. So do not hesitate to post answers 8^). Greetings and have a nice weekend, Timo

I remember reading about these problems a little while back when I was considering using the 3ware raid cards - I too was very interested in RAID 5. I may however got this mixed up with Promise - check reviews of the cards for full accuracy! From what I can remember, 3ware originally designed the cards for RAID 0, 1, 10 only. The hardware on the card can do these modes well and fast as it is done properly in the logic on the card. They then realised that the demand for RAID 5 was great and so kludged together a software version - the XOR calculations were done by the embedded OS on the card rather than the raw logic. Thus the performance is much worse. Since then they've always been tweaking it to try to get it to work properly - and as we've heard, it doesn't. If you're going to be setting up a dedicated fileserver then you will probably not get a severe performance hit if you just use software RAID 5 in the kernel - i've been using it here for some months with no problems: just follow the HOWTOs and it's not really too difficult to set up. If you can afford it then go for a SCSI solution - it'll work. :-) Matthew -- Matthew Sackman Nottingham, ENGLAND - The contents of this email are intended for the indicated recipient(s) only. Hello, The site you are looking at probably contains the default index page from an installation of the Debian Apache package. We haven't placed any kind of placeholder or block there; perhaps the webmaster has upgraded the Apache package and neglected to make sure that it still works. I'm afraid there's nothing that anyone at Debian can do to help you directly. It's the webmaster's job to find out what the problem is. I'd suggest that he should look in /var/www/index.html as a first try. Regards, -- Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Netscape in different desks with fvwm2
Many thanks to Erdmut Pfeifer for a very informative response! I'll try that suggestion ASAP. One possible show-stopper: I tried dragging the Messenger window to another desktop, by using the 2nd mouse button within the pager window. It worked, but all pop-ups triggered by my use of the Messenger window popped up in the original Navigator window. (I'm using no virtual pages (1x1), just a pure multiple desktop setup. Earlier, I used a 3x3 setup, and when I moved the Messenger window into an adjacent page by just "pushing through the edge", the popup problem didn't occur.) Mike Fontenot [EMAIL PROTECTED] Here's Erdmut's posting, for context: __ just an idea: there's a not too well advertised "-remote" option to Netscape that can be used to issue commands to be executed in an *already running* instance of Netscape. So, I assume something like netscape -remote 'openInbox()' should have the desired effect, presuming you know how to have fvwm2 open the resulting new window on a different desktop (which you seem to have figured out already :) BTW, similarly, commands like netscape -remote 'openURL(http://www.debian.org)' considerably speed up startup times when trying to open HTML documents from the commandline, as this avoids launching another instance of Netscape. For details see http://home.netscape.com/newsref/std/x-remote.html and have a look at Netscape's X-resources file Netscape.ad for further ideas on what you might want to control remotely -- just in case you start liking that feature :) Cheers -- Erdmut Pfeifer

extace alsa compile error
I'm running sid, and after downloading (apt-get source extace) extace version 1.6.1 I am getting compile errors. My intention is to enable alsa support. To do this, I entered the extracted directory and edited the file './debian/rules' and changed '--disable-alsa' to '--enable-alsa'. I then ran './debian/rules build'. If I leave alsa disabled, the compile is clean. Here are the version for packages installed on my machine: ii alsa-base 0.9+0beta7-2 ii alsa-headers 0.9+0beta7-2 ii alsa-modules-2 0.9+0beta7-2+p ii alsa-source0.9+0beta7-2 ii alsa-utils 0.9.0beta7-1 The source package differs in version from the binary; could this be part of the problem? Is there a better forum for me to report this? I've attached the log of my compile, separated into stdout and stderr. I am not sure how to generate the list, or get apt-get or wget to act on this. Any ideas? Thanks Tom

Both gcc-doc and task-devel-common are obsolete. gcc-doc still exists in testing, although I'm not quite sure why the testing bot hasn't decided to remove it yet; it's been replaced by gcc-$(version)-doc. task-devel-common has been removed from both testing and unstable, as the task packages have been replaced by a mechanism that stands a chance of causing the freeze fewer problems this time round. Your best bet is to try to get task-devel-common uninstalled. I'm kind of surprised that dselect complained about that, as nothing in testing/i386 currently depends on it. Problem with testing upgrade (kdelibs3)
I just ran my weekly upgrade, which is usually problem-free, but now I have an odd one. Installation of kdelibs3_4%3a2.2.1-14_i386.deb gets hung up at the following stage: Unpacking replacement kdelibs3 ... Replacing files in old package kdebase-libs ... Replacing files in old package konqueror ... dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/kdelibs3_4%3a2.2.1-14_i386.deb (--unpack): trying to overwrite '/usr/share/icons/hicolor/32x32/devices/3floppy_mount.png' which is also in package kdebase dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe) I have tried moving the old file in question, but with the same result. Is this a problem with the package, with dpkg, or is there something I'm neglecting to do. I am running this as su in a console on the kde desktop. ctrl key functionality gone missing
I've noticed a fair bit of traffic on this general topic, so hopefully the answer to this springs right to mind.. I've a debian potato install that was recently upgraded to use the 2.4.x kernel line. I essentially upgraded Debian itself and my Ximian desktop at the same time, using the "bunk" packages and whatever Ximian's current gnome is. Since doing this I can no longer use the key in all X applications. I originally believed that it wouldn't work in any X application but realized after examining xmodmap, and testing (by running "xev") that it was a selected few applications that didn't work. Where can I begin, to correct this anomaly? Regards, Marc.
GCC packages fighting amongst themselves?
There's probably an easy way out of this mess, but I'm somewhat new to Debian. (Been using Linux for years, but just recently switched to using a distro rather than hacking everything together by hand.) For a while now I've had both gcc/gcc-2.95 and gcc-3.0 installed; three packages in all. I briefly tried uninstalling the gcc/gcc-2.95 packages (why are there two of them? they're the same thing, aren't they?) but found that the gcc-3.0 package doesn't use the "alternatives" links to provide /usr/bin/gcc, etc. The update_alternatives(8) man page doesn't list any examples of how to use it, and I didn't feel like single-handedly destroying my system finding out while experimenting. :-) So, back to gcc and gcc-2.95. But now dselect is constantly signalling conflicts: gcc conflicts with gcc-doc (<< 2.95.3) gcc-2.95 depends on gcc (>= 2.95.3-2) kernel-source-2.2.19 recommends gcc kernel-package recommends gcc And dselect's recommended solution is to uninstall gcc, uninstall gcc-2.95, uninstall the kernel source, the kernel package, all of KDE and all of Python -- just so that it can install gcc-doc instead. "task-devel-common" is what's demanding that gcc-doc be installed. I played with deselecting that and half the packages on my system threatened to uninstall themselves, so I backed off. Why is 'gcc' conflicting with its own documentation package? What can I do to beat it into submission? (Ironically, the reason I want to get rid of gcc-2.95 entirely and use only gcc-3.x is that I'm a GCC maintainer, and want to do lots of testing with the 3.x series. If the solution to this dependancy mess involves destroying gcc-doc, that's fine with me; I have many copies of the GCC manual already. :-) Phil -- If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home and leave us in peace. No xpr on debian...
The xwd man page (for dumping an image of an X window) gives a "see also" for xpr (for printing the resulting X window dump). But xpr doesn't exist on my 2.2r3 debian distribution. What's going on? This is a fundamental capability...has xpr been replaced by something else to do this job? Mike Fontenot [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: Backspace is delete
Shaya, Try adding: (global-set-key "\C-h" 'backward-delete-char) to your .emacs file on the Solaris side. I think that will take care of your problem. Maybe you'll run into other keys that don't get mapped the same, but you can easily configure that in the .emacs file. I'm not sure how to make your keymappings only be modified, for example, when you are logged in remotely using telnet, however (although I'm sure it is possible to figure something out). -Kris -Original Message- From: Shaya Potter [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, November 09, 2001 7:39 AM To: Debian User List Subject: Re: Backspace is delete On Fri, 2001-11-09 at 08:52, Colin Watson wrote: > On Fri, Nov 09, 2001 at 07:47:38PM +0800, Michael Robinson wrote: > > Maybe I'm just being a clueless newbie, but I can't find where to put the > > ^H back into my Backspace in X text applications. > > You should probably read /usr/share/doc/xfree86-common/FAQ.gz. The problem is that the current woody KDE snapshot does not really work as it is a mixture between 2.1 and 2.2. Wait or get the full range of KDE 2.2 from unstable/sid. So anyone should put his KDE packages on hold or simply not run an update on woody if you do not want to have a broken KDE.
