try man update-menus

I have a file /etc/menu-methods/xfce and here are a couple of
its lines:

genmenu=   "debian.menu"
rootprefix="/etc/X11/xfce/"
userprefix="/.xfce/"

cdrw and cdrom: do ide and master/slave matter?

2002-03-12 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I have a cdrom and plan to keep it but also add a cd burner. I had thought that
i remembered being told that the cd burner had to be the master on an ide, but
now can't find any documentation for that. Both the cdrom and cdrw are ide/atapi
so I am using scsi emulation and have also compiled with scsi, scsi cdrom and
generic scsi. the person installing wants to install the cdrom on one drive and
the cdrw on the other as he feels this may make transfers when copying a bit
faster. I also have two hard disks, though one of them used to be DOS and, now
that i have made a dos partition on my main drive, is only being used to store
some backups at present. This means that I would probably put the cdrom on hdb
and the cdrw on hdc. Is there any reason not to do this?
Also, the person installing this can get the best price for me on a lite-on
cdrw, though he could also get a creative. when I looked at the cdrw-howto,
lite-on wasn't listed, but I realize this doesn't mean it isn't usable.
Furthe searching brought up the lite-on as useable with the cdrom.c driver.
Is this a generic driver that is loaded by the kernel and will it be loaded
with the options i've chosen?
Has anybody had experience with the lite-on; don't have a model number as
yet so can't be more specific.
TIA.

If yes , can someone explain me the procedure involved ..

There isn't one, but see the BTS entries for fetchmail (there is a bug there
with some ideas).

Personally, I just run "while true; do fetchmail ; sleep 10m ; done" in a

Unfortunatelly, pppd does not support kernel mode pppoe in Debian. You can still
use regular user space pppoe without any problems..

If you really want a kernel mode pppoe, I have submitted a bug
with the patch from http://www.shoshin.uwaterloo.ca/~mostrows/ (in BTS as
wishlish for ppp). The patch is about 100kB! :) My patch is a bit buggy though
as
if you try to build pppd with it, the plugin will end up in the right
directory but pppd will search in a different one -- to overcome that
you'll have to specify the full path to the pppoe plugin. Then
changing the dsl-provider by commenting out the pty pppoe etc.. I was
able to start kernel mode dsl with

pppd eth0 call dsl-provider

as described on the website. Works very nice for me on a 486 box..
There is a noticible increase in performance especially when the box
is loaded -- much better network transit times.

The load due to pppoe also decreased from about 80% for full
bandwidth usage down to about 40%.. I will be testing it for stability
for the next few months but it looks very promissing.

PPP really should support kernel mode PPPoE for woody as there is no
harm for bootfloppies [simply not included there] or for regular pppd
as pppoe is a plugin that doesn't have to be enabled.

Anyway, this is just my 2 cents. BTW, I have 2.4.18 with kernel mode
pppoe as module [but I'll link it in kernel soon since it's on all the
time anyway]

- Adam

PS. Maybe if people demand it, I could fix my patch and increase the
severity of the bug so hopefully the maintainer will notice it and
include it before it's too late :)

For interfaces I just have:

# Used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8). See the interfaces(5) manpage or
# /usr/share/doc/netbase/examples for more information.
#
auto lo eth0
iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet dhcp

and here I just use udhcpc - the tiny dhcp client... no config there.

I thought I was using dhcp-client (which I was) - but I just changed to
the tiny version. It works perfectly..

I found pump to be the most buggy dhcp client available - it would not
start on the right interface on my "server" that has 2 nics.. And there
were tons of other bugs, ugghh..

I like udhcpc since it is very small and seems to work quite reliably.

Apt tools for the job that jump to mind are minicom and the versatile
Debian dial-up utility called pppconfig. You can discover your modem S
registers using minicom. pppconfig makes things easier to dial-up and
connect, it is simple with many features. The maintainer of pppconfig is

So do an 'apt-get install pppconfig', do not forget to do a search with

Tradition, portability. "cp -a" is a GNUism, there was no "cp -a" back when,
and there is no "cp -a" on many systems now. It doesn't matter if you are

Do you login at the console and then startx or do you have a display manager
installed (graphical login) ? If you use startx then Ctrl-Alt-Backspace
should kill X. If you have a display manager (xdm, gdm, kdm or wdm) installed
but don't wish to always use X then edit /etc/inittab to change the default
run level:

# The default runlevel.
id:3:initdefault:

Remove the symlink to xdm, gdm, kdm or wdm from /etc/rc2.d/. Now you can boot
to console only by passing the argument init 2 at boot time.

Alternatively just uninstall your display manager.

All you need to do is change the "dhcp" to "static" and add whatever

I recently did something similar, moving my personal files to a new HD so
that I can mount the entire drive (partitioned as one big drive) to /home/nl
for my personal files. Interestingly, because I now have an entire ext2fs
file system mounted as my home directory, I now have a lost+found directory

One thing I wondered about, though. You are using the technique of taring up
the entire directory tree and then untaring it into the target partition. Why
not just use cp -a instead?

I edited /etc/network/interfaces by hand before I even heard of

generating PDF documents with Type 3 fonts (as xpdf calls
them), I would like to install additional Type 1 fonts, from
the cm-super package.

But then, the question: where is the "Right Way" of adding
local fonts for TeX?

I mean, is there any hierarchy under /usr/local where I should
add them? I would not like to mix the fonts I install with
those coming from Debian packages...

Thanks for any help, Roger...

And now, with xpdf 1.0 in testing, the output it generates is
a thousand times better and quite comparable to that produced
by acroread.

In fact, I'm now in doubts if I should use the (pdflatex,
xpdf) combo or (latex, xdvi) for previewing my own texts.

One thing is certain, though: I will use pdflatex for
producing the final version of my texts.

When you logged in, did you enter your username in all caps? If so,
the kernel assumed that you're using a terminal which isn't capable
of displaying lowercase characters and is trying to accomodate the
terminal's limitations. To fix this, log out and log back in without
typing the username in all caps. (Yes, this means you're pretty well
hosed if your username is JUSTIN. Change it to justin instead.)

I can guess what exactly you want - you want a best possible screen
capture of yours without any other application windows like XV or
something else. Do this on an xterm,

"sleep 10; xwd -root screen.xwd"

Minimise the xterm immediately

Install image-magick and use the "convert" utility to convert into the

You could try looking at man klogd and the -c switch. If this looks
like giving you a possible solution to your problem you will need to
alter /etc/init.d/klogd. The line you want probably says

KLOGD=""

at present. Altering it to

KLOGD="-c 6"

may be what you want.

The archived bug reports for klogd should provide you with an
explanation to give to your friends and relieve your embarrassment.

Perhaps the package kio-fish would help then?

Configuring a modem

Can't leave X Windows

Hello all:
I am using Debian Potato, and recently installed the X Windows system.
However, I can no longer go back to the command line. I tried Exit, and the
other various exit/kill commands. I also tried Alt-Ctrl-F1. When I do this
the monitor goes out of frequency. I am absolutly positive that I set the
correct frequency in XConfig. Any ideas?

Where/how did you install realplayer? All my attempts to install
realplayer (from the debian package and using the tar file from Real's

Thanks for your reply.
I solved my problem:
when I ran xconfig I set by mistake "include IDE/ATAPI-2 DISK support"
to "m" instead to "y" ;-)
I rerecompiled the kernel and now it's ok.

About lilo :
I use lilo to boot on HDD1 on which win98 and potato 2.2r2 are installed.
And on HDD2 "potato -> woody" is installed.(I experiment )
I don't know if lilo can accommodate the three systems ?

off topic:
I put the module udf in the kernel 2.4.17 and now I can read my CDRW
(burned with udf fs) with linux.
Thanks again.

Hi Sebastion,

Why not open up "dselect", go to "Select" and then press "/" to search
for "gs-common" and go up one line, then press "_" to purge the file.
Repeat the search and re-install "gs-aladdin" (do not forget that
gs-common must remain selected, it's just easier to search for gs-common
than for gs alone). Note that the action of uninstalling gs will
probably reveal what package depends on it. Next, Hit "enter" then
select "install" to install/remove the needed packages -- that should
get you back up and running. If problem persists, purge gs and use
"remove" then go back and re-install gs-aladin. I'm sorry that I do not
know the cli commands for apt as yet :<

Interfaces configuration and tap0

2002-03-12 Thread Philippe Raxhon

 Hi,

I'm running a Debian 2.2 with testing packages. I have 2 network cards:
- eth0: not configured, it's used by pppd (ADSL line) when started.
- eth1: configured as 192.168.1.254, for my local network (configured
using linuxconf, present in /etc/network/interfaces)

But when I boot, ifconfig showns only lo and tap0 (being the default
gateway). That means I have to do:

- ifconfig tap0 down
- ifconfig eth1 192.168.1.254
before starting the ADSL connection (that is then the default gateway).

What is tap0?
Why doesn't it "load" eth1? When I start linux in single mode it
doesnt't load nor tap0 nor eth1.

BTW, I have another problem. I have added some environment variables to
/etc/profile, but they are not taken into account when I run a xterm
while they are set in a tty.

Thanks a lot. I hope these questions have not been asked 1000 times.

Greetings

Philippe Raxhon

pppoe purely in user mode instead of using the kernel module which is
still rather developmental as far as I have read. You look suspisciously

Since all you need is an unmounted partition, you can just use a
rescue disk with access to tune2fs and its libraries--just copy all
these to some handy partition or your rescue disk, set
LD_LIBRARY_PATH, and I think you're okay.

Or, if you have access to a fairly complete and up to date rescue CD,
you can just use that.

Try typing $ while in Mutt. That tells it to refresh its display.

I think you may want:

set imap_passive=no

to make mutt keep checking the imap server for changes.

Use a keyboard. Re-arrange the buttons as required. There may be some
industrial pushbutton arrays out there that plug in in place of a
keyboard. Look at industrial controls suppliers.

Help! Stuck in apt-get

2002-03-12 Thread Sebastian Canagaratna
I have woody installed and just a few days ago I thought I would
replace gs-aladdin with gs. This has got me into trouble where I can't
proceed any further.

I get

gs: Depends: gs-common(>=0.2) but it is not installed
E: unmet dependencies. Try using -f.

When I try apt-get -f install

I get

dpkg: error processing /var/cache/ gs-common
trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/bdftops' which is also in
 package ghostscript'

I don't seem to be able to get past this. Fortunately , the system
is still working. There is no package called ghostscript, so I do not
know what package is being referred to. Though gs-aladdin is
reported as being uninstalled, I presume, since the system is working
and gs has not been installed, that the ghostscript part of aladdin
has not been completely removed. The problem is: How do I get it to
instll gs-common so that it can then install gs ?

 Thanks for any suggestions.

I'm actually not using ppp, so I'm not the best person to answer this
question, but my instinct is that these things should already happen in
one of the package-provided initscripts. For setserial, you should be
able to 'dpkg-reconfigure setserial' (as root) and have it "autosave
once". This means that any changes you make to /etc/serial.conf this
time will be saved when the system is brought down and restored each
time it's brought up after that.

I guess the short answer is "/etc/serial.conf", and also read the
setserial manpage and (if you know your way around a shell script)
/etc/init.d/setserial.

As for pon; I don't really know (but see below).

Anything you want. Create a file /etc/init.d/local, or, better still,
/etc/init.d/ and create smylinks to it
in /etc/rc?.d . You can see the manpage for update-rc.d or ask around
here for more clues on how to set up the symlinks, if you don't
understand what I mean.

They come exactly every 20 minutes (by default). I think the idea is to
make it easier to see the time flow when examining a log file; If you
see MARK MARK MARK MARK, you can easily, instantly see that
there is very little activity. If another time you see many, many
messages between each MARK, you know they're coming in rapidly. Sure,
each log item is timestamped, but the MARKs are a handy visual clue. You
can change or disable this behavior in /etc/init.d/sysklogd. Add an
argument to the syslog daemon that specifies -m to tell it
how often to MARK. The deafult is 20, and 0 disables the MARKs entirely.
This info is in the manpage for sysklogd.

You can use xv for this. Just start xv, press the grab button in the menu
and grab a piece of your screen.

However, I am not sure if this grab display's what you 'see'. The screen's
bitmap is probably send to the video card correctly, and that is what is
grabbed.

What video card are you using? Are you sure your monitor can cope with
resolutions higher than 800x600?

No. I get a pristine kernel from ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/ then I
uzip and untar in into /usr/src so that it creates /usr/src/linux. I
change the directory name to match the kernel, eg. /usr/src/linux-2.4.18
and make a symlink to /usr/src/linux. I cd to the /usr/src/linux directory
and run 'make xconfig' and run through all the options. At this point, I
do the Debian bit, 'make-kpkg -rev Custom.N kernel_image'. I install the
resultant .deb then do the NVIDIA bits exactly as in the accompanying
documentation.

I never use apt-get to obtain kernel sources - never have done.

Hope this helps - it certainly works without errors here.

I found the problem; I still had xdm installed from when I

Sorry for the delayed reply -- have you solved this problem yet?
Also, I'm sending this back to the list, since I think I've got a pretty
good answer that others may like to see (at least in the archives).

In the mouse capplet of the gnome control panel, I just see the
"standard" left-handed or right-handed mouse option. So gnome does have
some way of modifying the buttons, but doesn't let you do what you want.
(Reminds me of windows...) Either that or it doesn't actually modify the
buttons, just how they're interpreted with gnome apps (but not all X
apps). I haven't tested it, so I don't know which it is.

What happened with xmodmap? Just didn't change it at all? Any error
messages?

I'm just now looking at the xmodmap manpage. I see that xmodmap -pp
should give you a list of the current "button mapping" (i.e. which
physical buttons map to which button codes). It also looks like the
correct syntax for the command I pointed you at earlier should really be
this:

xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 3 2"

For me, that command complains because I have a wheel mouse (which
counts as 5 buttons instead of 3). When I try this:

xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 3 2 4 5"

it works. Buttons 2 and 3 are switched, and everything else is as
before. So you'll have to give it a mapping with exactly the number of
physical buttons you have (or at least, that it thinks you have, which
you can find out with xmodmap -pp).

good times,
Vineet

But how do you umount root? Do you need to do a mke2fs

You may end up with a slightly b0rked system (but you knew that
already).

If your /var was on the root drive, you'll have to delete its
contents before mounting new /var -- otherwise nfs-mounted /var
will mask the old one, and contents of old /var will still be
there, using up disk space.

Of course you'd better stop the daemons whose log and run files
you're deleting. So you'll do that in a single-user mode, with
all daemons stopped anyway, and then /var/run and /var/log won't
change during tar.

pppoe and kernel 2.4.x

2002-03-12 Thread Frodo Baggins
Hi debianers,
well, I have a debian system connected to a ISP using
pppoe. Everithing works well with the 2.2.x kernels, but for different
reasons, I need to install a 2.4.x kernel.

Reading the file /usr/doc/pppoe/KERNEL-MODE-PPPOE I understand that
I must recompile ppp from the tar-ball at
http://www.shoshin.uwaterloo.ca/~mostrows/ which is a patched ppp,
install it and then compiling rp-pppoe enabling plugins.

This look strightforward but will obviously clash with the package
structure of my machine. Just for one, intrusion-detection tools
(e.g. tiger) will complain about unmatching cecksums. For another,
updating will become painful.

Is there another, more debian conformant, way to do it?

  Thanks a lot

Good warnings. I would also recommend doing a `ls -ld /usr /var >

that the ownership and permissions on them are correct after creating
and mounting the new ones.

That's my main disagreement with George's instructions. Go to
single-user mode _before_ you copy /var and /usr to the new drive
instead of after copying them. This will shut down all the various
daemons that might be modifying data while you work.

(The lesser disagreement is that I would use cpio instead of tar, but
that's really just a matter of taste.)

So, how I do it:

1. Shut down machine[1]
2. Install new drive
3. Boot to single-user mode
4. cfdisk /dev/hdnew
5. mount /dev/hdnewvar /mnt
6. cd /var
7. find . -xdev -print0 | cpio -pvdm0 /mnt
8. umount /mnt
9. Repeat steps 5-8 for /usr
10. Update /etc/fstab
11. Reboot

or

11. umount /var && umount /usr && mount -a && init 2

[1] I'm assuming that the box is not hot-swap capable, so you have
to power down to install the new drive. If it is hot-swappable, just
plug the drive in and use `init 1` to get to single-user mode.

OT: interface card to register button presses

2002-03-12 Thread Sebastiaan
Hi,

does anyone know a good, simple interface card which gives you the
ability to connect a panel with about 100 buttons to your computer and
registrates which butten is pressed?

Of course it should work with Linux and hopefully an easy to program one.

I was asked to make a simple voting simulation for the upcoming elections
here. Since this is the first time all votings are electronical, some
people have trouble voting (mainly elderly people). Another issue is to
train illiterates (illiterate in Latin script) in voting for the upcoming
elections.

Thanks in advance for any hints or ideas,
Sebastiaan

Journaled filesystems exist to help recover from _filesystem_ errors in
the event of an unexpected shutdown. You're still liable to encounter
_other_ forms of inconsistent data, and journaling ***DOES NOT***
address this issue.

Hard shutdowns are _not_ recommended as a matter of course. You're
likely to run into trouble sooner or later.

By way of analogy, you can stop your car by running it up against
something. Hitting the wheelstop in a parking lot at 1.5 MPH is rather
different from striking a tree at 65 MPH. Your car is stopped in both
cases. The condition of the contents may vary.

Peace.

Please use postfix quoting format: your reply goes below the material
cited. Trim your quotes appropriately and ensure your attributions are
accurate.

First: I'd strongly recommend xdpf or gv as alternatives to the
non-free Acroread produced by a company which pursues strongly
objectionable practices of persecuting software developers for being
smart and innovative.

Second: I suspect a font/locales issue. You're likely seeing Adobe's
broken handling of double-byte charactersets. This is conjecture (I
don't use Adobe products if at all possible), but somewhat matches my
own experience with other software this past fall, particularly the
locales given. The issue was discussed at length on list. There is no
single workaround, though there are numerous tacks to try. My own later
posts tried to summarize some of the options, see archives.

in what config file should I place 'setserial /dev/ttyS3 IRQ 5", and pon ?

2002-03-12 Thread John Kennedy

Good morning,

I have a 56k dialup/firewall box using Debian 2.2.17

I configured the dialup connection using 'ppp-config'
and selected 'demand' dial
however after reboot doing 'netstat -nr' returns only

"192.168.1.10 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 eth0"

When I ping an address out on the net it won't dial out.

If I type 'pon' and then 'netstat -nr' i get
a proper routing table as below

"10.112.112.112 0.0.0.0 UH ppp0"
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 Ueth0
0.0.0.010.112.112.112 UG ppp0

and I can now ping out of my lan to an ip on the net.

Because I an using IRQ-5 on my modem I must also do a
'setserial /dev/ttyS3 IRQ 5" before dialing.

I am curious as to why the modem does not dial out
after setting 'demand' in 'ppp-config' ?
I set 'defaultroute' in ppp-config.

My most urgent question here is
in what config file should I enter the commands to
1. do 'setserial /dev/ttyS3 IRQ 5" after boot.
2. do 'pon' after boot.

I'm a former Redhat user...
With Redhat I would put it in /etc/rc.d/rc.local
but I noticed that my Potato install has no
file /etc/rc.d/rc.local...
so what file in Debian 2.2.17 performs rc.locals functions?

Also one other question,
when doing tail -f /var/log/messages I notice that
when I'm dialed up but the connection is just sitting there
dooing nothing for a while I get a bunch of
'---MARK---' messages and I'm wondering what they mean.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

John

Strange messages on all terminals

2002-03-12 Thread Scott Henson
I am having a problem with all my virtual terminals(ctr-alt-F<1-6>) For
some reason a constant stream of information is sent to all of them. It
seems to be something to do with my internet connection, because its
specifying MAC addresses and a couple of other things which makes me
think its displaying all incomming packets to the terminals. Now this
is not affecting X or any of the X-terms, but its sure a bother while
working in a virtual terminal. I am running woody and a 2.4.19 ac
pre-patch. Anyone have an idea why this is happening. Its been going
on for a while now and I tried re-compiling the kernel taking out all
verbose debug messages having to do with the net connection. I am also
running the new isc dhcp client 3.0, but this was happening before with
the old 2.2 version. Im not sure what else might be causing this. This
is especially embaracing because Im trying to get a bunch of my friends
to switch from windows, and having all that trash there and not knowing
what is causeing it is not a major selling point. Anyone have an idea?
Thanks.

There is a way to put a hold on a package (which someone else will
probably tell you, I'm not really sure what it is). But we do a similar
thing to what you're describing here, and what we do is use dpkg with
the -R option (see the man page for dpkg for more on this) to install
all of the .deb files in a directory. This won't go out to the network
or wherever and get other stuff--like more recent versions of files
(although if some of the .deb's you're trying to install are missing
dependencies, it might choke on them).

Anyway, HTH.

Go into single user mode telinit 1 and then tar. I actually use cp -a
which seems to preserve all the required attributes.

I have done this process before.

%telinit 1
%mkdir mnt/var
%mkdir mnt/usr
%mount /dev/ /mnt/var
%mount /dev/ /mnt/usr
%cp -a /usr/* /mnt/var
%cp -a /var/* /mnt/usr
%umount /mnt/var
%umount /mnt/usr
%rm -r /mnt/var
%rm -r /mnt/usr
%umount /var
%umount /usr
%mv /var /var.old
%mv /usr /usr.old
%mkdir /var
%mkdir /usr
%mkdir /dev/ /var
%mkdir /dev/ /usr

update /etc/fstab to reflect new changes

%telinit 2

to come back to multiuser

Please note that above steps are from memory - no guarantees - it worked
for me atleast three times. make backups blah blah.

Good luck

Not generally recommended. My own partitioning guidelines:

http://kmself.home.netcom.com/Linux/FAQs/partition.html

As for the reiserfs conversion:

  - Buy, bug, steal, or build a kernel with Reiserfs support.

  - Archive any existing data you wish to retain on the partition(s) you
wish to convert to reiserfs. I recommend tarring to an alternate
partition, computer, or tape.

  - Repartition, if necessary.

  - Create the reiserfs filesystem.

  - Restore or copy data from archives or other source(s).

  - If you've modified your boot or root partition, update your
bootloader (typically LILO or GRUB).

  - Update your /etc/fstab to reflect current reality (partitions, mount
points, filesystems).

  - Restart.

I recommend using ext2fs or ext3fs for partitions smaller than ~150 MiB
due to the overhead of the rieser journal data (about 32 MiB, fixed
size). This would include your /, /boot, and often /tmp partitions,
typically.

Peace.

Then they will never get updated unless the hold is released :)

Ok, I do not really see how your system is configured. On which harddisk
is Linux installed? Why do you use a floppy to boot when you have LILO
installed too?

The problem is that the ide driver is not loaded (that's what the kernel
says). You have to recompile the kernel and test it first.
