But when I stick knoppix in, it happily accesses the network, and lsmod shows via-rhine and mii modules (one shows as "used by" the other, but I don't remember which way 'round)... So I built myself a 2.4.21 kernel (that's the version knoppix was using) from a Debian source package, built support for the via-rhine right into the kernel, and (wonder of wonders) my new kernel boots! Now... eth0 seems to exist, but not actually work... ifconfig shows the usual bunch of info, except no IP address. I've put these lines in /etc/networking/interfaces: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp I run dhclient and it exits with no complaints. If I ifdown and ifup eth0 it looks like it's working. Specifically, ifup says "Setting full-duplex based on MII #1 link partner capability of 45e1" The little green light on my router says the connection is there. But whatever I do I don't get a connection. Ping to addresses on my LAN including the router itself returns: ping: sendto: Network is unreachable ping: wrote 192.168.1.1 64 chars, ret=-1 Ping 127.0.0.1 works. So I'm thinking that I missed some vital step in the network configuration, but what? Or is it actually a failure of the driver? I've been googling at it and reading manpages all day, but my debug-fu seems to have failed me on this. Once I use isup eth0 command it says about module not found or something and next time I do it it says eth0 is already configured. What should I do to make eth0 and eth1 work. Kindly help. Thanks If you have a Pentium-class or greater machine, you might want the 586 or 686 variant rather than the 386 variant. The 386 should work fine, but the others are more "optimized" for their respective chips. To answer your question, you probably need to load the correct module for your nic. Assuming it's a PCI-based nic, run "lspci" to find out which chipset you have (like 3Com 3c509 or Intel i810), then you can run "modprobe [the appropriate driver]" or run "modconf". modconf is menu-driven, and has the advantage of placing the module in /etc/modules so that the module will be available automatically at future reboots. If you use modprobe, you'll want to make that entry yourself. The modules should be available in /lib/modules/[kernel-version]/kernel/drivers/net. So for example, if you have a LNE100TX nic, which requires the "tulip" driver, you'd run "modprobe tulip". If you have a 3com 3c509, I think you'd want to run "modprobe 3c59x". Then restart networking with a command like "/etc/init.d/networking restart" (although I've had better success doing a "stop" followed by a "start" instead of a "restart" - I have no idea why). If that works, add the module name to /etc/modules for future reboots. -- Kent -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The grub menu.lst would read: title Debian/GNU linux root(hd1,6) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.xxx root=/dev/hdb7 initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.4.xxx boot If /boot is in a different partition that /dev/hdb7, "root (hd1,6)" will need to be changed to match the partition of /boot. Well, I couldn't really find an "official" statement, but there's lot of indirect "evidence" on the web. I've spent plenty of time Googling around for procmail, exim, and fetchmail, which is why I've seen lots of these messages... :-) http://www.exim.org/pipermail/exim-users/Week-of-Mon-2925/021480.html http://www.progsoc.uts.edu.au/lists/slug/2001/May/msg00636.html Indeed, as is mentioned quite some time, if you have a look at the relevant part of exim.conf, Debian-exim arguably needs no .forward to hand mail over to procmail. <...> > My newbie-ness agrees with you. :-) Good to know I'm not alone. However, I stumbled upon this: http://lists.debian.org/debian-user-de/1999/debian-user-de-199906/msg00309.html ...which seems to suggest * not only that a .procmailrc makes a .forward useless when that .forward is only meant to roll on procmail * but *also* that it's the cause of the duplicate mails, since the .procmailrc puts mail in it's place, and the .forward delivers mail to procmail a *second* time! I'll delete my .forward and see what happens... > Are you using fetchmail? What does your .fetchmailrc look like? Yes, fetchmail. Nothing special, really. set syslog set postmaster "root" set daemon 300 poll "server" with proto pop3 user "username", with password "password", is "user" here no keep; And some other entries like that. Courier imap (maybe procmail too?) newbie question
I killed fetchmail and tried to kill uw-imap then: I did an apt-get mb2md and converted /var/mail/USER to ~/Maildir and also converted the directory formerly used by uw-imap. Then apt-get courier-imap and a reboot. Now I see only my Inbox folders (Inbox is the parent of all subfolders now.) I cannnot go and see most of the subfolders any more, but can see a fee subfolders. This has me stuck. I looked in google and http://www.inter7.com/courierimap.html but haven't found a suggestion yet. Also new email is stuck at /var/mail and suppose I should install procmail to move it to ~/Maildir. I already have smail (kind of like sendmail) which sends out mail. Hopefully, smail and procmail will work together and this is a good, recommend combination: fetchmail (grabs email from ISP) procmail (moves from /var/mail/user to ~/Maildir) smail (sends out email to ISPs smtp port) courier-imap Thanks for suggestions. ___ Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com The most personalized portal on the Web! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Its also conceivable that the problem lies even earlier than that with your mail provider, but we'll find out one step at a time. Hmm, actually, now that I think about it, I know what the problem is. (How nice of exim to log 'ident' information, and how nice of your system to provide it! :-D). 'ident', btw, is a mechanism whereby a network host can ask another one what user owns the process that has the socket open. In this case it really helps identify and solve the problem (next paragraph ...). You have fetchmail running twice -- once as user 'fetchmail' and once as user 'tom'. Both instances are grabbing the mail from your POP box and passing it on to exim. You have fetchmail set to not remove messages from the server, and POP has limited capability of identifying "read" messages, so each fetchmail ends up fetching each message. The solution is to clear out your /etc/fetchmailrc. (IMO running fetchmail from your user's own crontab is better than running it as a system-wide daemon, so I recommend keeping your ~/.fetchmailrc and emptying /etc/fetchmailrc.) -D -- In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. Re: inetd not being run at startup
Aha, sure enough, only rc0.d and rc6.d have a file K20inetd I assume I can fix this by typing update-rc.d inetd defaults Someone please let me know if it would be a mistake to do so. Also, I noticed that there were several other files missing besides inetd, such as: cron, kerneld, ppp, hwclock.sh, etc-setserial, hotplug, urandom, networking, umountfs, and halt. Should I also try to type 'update-rc.d NAME defaults' for them? Thanks, Ric On Mon, Oct 27, 2003 at 11:32:29AM -0700, Monique Y. sudden death of mozilla firebird + gnome-sound-recorder hang
Hello all, Since approx two weeks, mainly two applications make enourmous problems: mozilla-firebird and gnome-sound-recorder. All this happended just after an apt-get upgrade. I do think that the reason is to be found in some base libs (gtk or so?). I think i can exlude defect versions of the named software, because both of them have been updated since then. Totem also cause problems until yesterday but it's problems were the same. Mozilla Firebird issues: application suddenly closes, epsecially upon opening of new tabs or opended menus (but not always!). Here a strace of mozilla-firebird: read(3, "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"..., 64) = 64 gettimeofday({1067289895, 713185}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1067289895, 713336}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1067289895, 713399}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1067289895, 713447}, NULL) = 0 kill(2581, SIGRTMIN)= 0 gettimeofday({1067289895, 713534}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1067289895, 713660}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1067289895, 713690}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1067289895, 713726}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1067289895, 713750}, NULL) = 0 write(2, "pure virtual method called\n", 27) = 27 rt_sigprocmask(SIG_UNBLOCK, [ABRT], NULL, 8) = 0 kill(2566, SIGABRT) = 0 --- SIGABRT (Aborted) @ 0 (0) --- unlink("/home/blazko/.phoenix/default/09kafwql.slt/lock") = 0 exit_group(6) = ? The problem is that I am doing image processing which requires heavy algorithms on large matrices and proper support for graphics (2D and 3D). Regratably octave is not up to the task. The contour function is way to slow and unstable and its image display support far from being flexible enough. Its about at the stage of matlab 5 (which is quite impressive for a free program). Another nice option is the pdl extension of perl. Its fast and quite usable. The problem with it is that its not command line drive but run from the shell (although there is a simple command line, but it could use history and completion functionality). Also the syntax is very different from matlab, so porting isn't really possible. Re: Removing unused modules from initrd image
The modules in the initrd image aren't what's running after your machine boots, just a superset of what you need in order to boot your machine. If you have a bunch of modules that are loading and are unused, use modconf to deselect them and restart. madmac - Original Message - From: "Bharath Ramesh" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Monday, October 27, 2003 2:27 PM Subject: Removing unused modules from initrd image > I instaled kernel-image-2.4.22-1-k7 recently. Well, initially, I thought it was from a .forward. Afterwards, I learned that today's Debian/Exim configuration doesn't need a .forward to call procmail. As soon as a .procmailrc file exists in the user's home directory, mail will be handed over. But there is indeed this .forward file, which pipes mail through procmail: |/usr/bin/procmail > I doubt that it's actually *mutt* displaying the message twice, but just > in case, have you tried another mail reader? At this moment (as at all others), several duplicate mails are in my inbox. For instance, one written by Vivek Kumar, with a subject of "nfs problem. When I have a look in ~/Mail/inbox/, I see -- indeed -- two mails that are exactly the same... However, the longer this takes, the more I'm beginning to feel a little nervous, since it undoubtedly has to do with some misconfiguration of mine. Cursor dust
Hi everybody ! I use Debian 3.0/stable with 2.4.18 and 2.4.20 kernel. The GUI are KDE2 and Gnome 1.4. My debian packages I always refresh with "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade" commands. I have got this problem for a year since I used Debian. I put the question to hungarian linux and debian mailing lists, but I have not got any real answer. My problem is that using some program, the cursor leaves dust behind it. When I move the cursor with the left-key, right-key, up-key, down-key, and it also leaves dust when I move the scroll-bar up or down. And this time when the cursor move to another place it leaves a line, or a part of a line. Fortunately, I don't meet with this problem at most of the programs (kedit, konqueror, netscape 4.x, gftp, xterm, kword, kmail, ...). But I meet with this problem in the following program: Abiword, Mozilla, Netscape 7.x, Eclipse (java development tool). I try KDE and also GNOME but I meet this problem. Is it possible that the above mentioned programs are wrong, and developers wrote this program wrongly to move the cursor ? Is it possible that the cursor moving has been written in not this programs, but then this programs call the modul of the operating system, but this modul works wrongly ? I thought that the problem will be solved itself with the help kernel changes, or with the help of refresh debian-packages, but this didn't help me. Have somebody ever meet with this problem ? What is the solution ? Joe -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thanks for letting me know my message got through. I'm only at the point of setting up the X windows system in my debian installation, so can't yet cruise cyberspace to check the archives. At present, my X server starts, but all I get is a blank blue screen. I try to start icewm (it seems to be ready to run) by adding an exec into /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc and in ~/.Xinitrc, but nothing happens. When I get this straightened out, and get my browser going, debian list archives will be one of the first places I'll head ;-) Haines -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". phonetic symbols
First of all thanks to [EMAIL PROTECTED] The fonts used in Windows were these: 1) WP Phonetic 2) SymbolProp B, also called WP Multinational Roman. 3) Times New Roman. 4) WP Greek Helve and 5) Century Gothic. I have Debian Knoppix, the latest version. I think the file in Debian that converted the Windows file is in MS word. I have told a friend who knows more than me about it and we are going to try if "Sounds like you need to convert from one font to another. so /schwa/ ->chr(some-number), a->a,A->, etc. sounds like a task for sed or perl ormaybe tr?-kev" works. Secondly thanks to Johann Spies <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. I can't convert the Windows file into pdf in Windows because I don't have the Acrobat Reader program; In Linux the pdf is free but in Windows it cost 600 euros. Thirdly thanks to Antonio Rodr <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. The pdf would not be the solution anyway because I need to print some pages de of the file in Debian.Johann Spies is right there in his other later e-mail. I have downloaded the tippa fonts but in Debian Knoppix, the latest version, they appear as LatEx, not as Tippa, although I think that they are the same. The funny thing is that a few weeks before I installed another version of Debian Knoppix, an earlier one, which I uninstalled later because it gave me problems. That previous version converted some of these phonetic symbols: the symbol for th in three and the symbol for u in cut but this later version doesn't. How strange! All these phonetic symbols appear when I use them in a new Debian Knoppix file. The problem is that that old file comes from Windows 2000. However I am sure that if Debian Knoppix has these symbols there should be a way to convert the Windows file into the Linux file properly. Finally thanks to Dave Howorth <[EMAIL PROTECTED] who siad: If you can make a new document containing the symbols (YES, I CAN), then the problem most probably is that your imported document is using another font that is not installed on your system (YOU ARE PROBABLY RIGHT). There are two ways to fix that.First to try is to select all the text in your document and change it to the font that you just proved works. That's an easy fix if it works (IT DOESN'T WORK).If that doesn't work, you need to import the Windows font that your document is using (I HAVE THE WINDOWS FONTS ON MY COMPUTER IN A DIFFERENT DISK). That's more difficult, but it's been discussed before, so search the archive as a first step (try truetype as a keyword). I am no programmer but I hope that with all your help we will be able to sort it out. I will keek informed about the results and how everything progresses. Thanks again to all of you because I feel that I am not alone. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If something went wrong with framebuffers: do not use it. In general if nobody has a better idea (see post of pigeon) I would suggest the following: Try to build a vanilla kernel with only those features you will need to boot: - Disable framebuffers (from kernel config, no vga parameter on boot prompt) - Disable ACPI, APM - Disable APIC - Disabe USB - Disable support for "special devices" like TV cards, ISDN cards etc. (searching for them might (?) confuse the PCI bus) Make sure you backup your old config so you know which options you wanted to set. > > However, I built these two kernels very differently.
