Weird /dev2/root2 errors trying to boot 2.6.4

2004-03-28 Thread Nacho de los Ríos Tormo
I have installed kernel 2.6.4-1-686-smp using apt-get install, but I
have not managed to get it to boot. It gets stuck with these messages
(quoted below from the moment thing start to go wrong):

mount: /dev2/root2 is not a valid block device

There is indeed no such thing as /dev2 directory in my system. In case
this had something to do with devfs (though I really don't know much
about devfs), I added the option "devfs=mount", but it did nothing.

For what it is worth, upon executing lilo I get:

The hard disk is a SATA device which works fine under 2.4.24 (as
/dev/hde) and under W2K.

Any idea about what's going on?

I don't suppose you changed your bootloader at the
same time, did you? It sounds like you switched to
grub and neglected to pass the necessary kernel
arguments.

If this is indeed the case, boot using the rescue
kernel, and in the file /boot/grub/menu.lst, look
for a part that looks like:

title linux
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz ro root=/dev/hda1
initrd /initrd.img
boot

You will need to change the numbers following BOTH
of the references to "root", according to what drive
and partition are root. You can probably leave the
first one alone, considering grub seems to be
finding your kernel just fine.

Cheers,
Jason Whittle

Debian Installation Questions...

2004-03-28 Thread users
Hello,

I m preety new to Linux and having some problems installing properly,
Hopefully some in the group can help me out or suggest simple
solution.

Here is the scenario --

My currect system configuration is 80GB internal HDD (Primary), I have
WinXP already installed on my this HDD. I bought a new internal 160gb
HDD and an enclosure to make is USB2.0 external HDD. When i connect
it USB port, system recognizes it fine ( I havent formatted this disk
yet.)

Now problem is --

I want to install Debian on this external HDD, so that i can use this
with my laptop also as and when required.

Question is --

1) I have already downloaded debian from one the mirror site listed on
debian.org website (complete folder on windows appears as 1.16GB with
2836 files). I want to know is this correct approximate size for
debian installable files.
2) If above is not correct can some-one guide me where i can correct
files.
3) How can i install debian on External HDD and boot from that drive
instead of WinXP.
4) Can i use external HDD with my laptop also when i want to use Linux
through laptop.

Any suggestion/help/advice will be highly appreciated.

Thanx in advance for all ur valuable help.

Problems with latest Apache2 update

2004-03-28 Thread John Foster
I recently updated my apache2 from SID. Now when it tries to start I get a
message that it can not find the fully qualified domain name of my network
server. I have recently used the newest Debian network installer from SID to
set up this system. I am not sure why apache2 is having this issue. The host
name and network settings seem OK but since all of this is a SID install and
likely VERY buggy I am asking if anyone else has these same problems. Apache2
does start but sets up localhost as the server. Oddly at no time during the
Apache2 installation did anything ask for the FQDN so I am assuming that
this new version is supposed to locate it by some other means. I even
completely purged all of the install files and every reference from the file
tree & reinstalled all of apache2 with the exact same results. Recall I did
have this working properly prior to the update. Maybe it is a bug but I am
very cautious in filing bug reports. Any tips are appreciated including
things that may seem very obvious that I may have overlooked.

Debconf isn't a window manager - it's a configuration utility used by dpkg.

The answer to your question is "whichever one you want". That is what makes
Linux so wonderful - you have choices. Install a few, try them out, and see
which one you like the best.

By default Debian installs several. Again, the emphasis is on user choice.

A Windows virus will not run on Linux. Even if it did, your mail client
wouldn't let you execute it (if it would, switch mail clients).

You would first have to save the file to disk, then make the file
executable, then actually run it. This is one of several reasons why Linux
is less vulnerable to viruses than Windows.

> I know how to use F-Prot and Clamav as command-line scanners,

Depends on how you receive your mail. You'll need to provide more info to
get useful advice.

In all honesty, though, you really don't need them. The only practical use
for a virus scanner on a Linux machine is if you need to protect Windows
clients. Viruses just aren't a serious threat to Linux systems at this time
(unless they fill your disks), and they probably never will be, due to the
inherent protections of a Unix-based OS.

iftop is a tool that will give you per-connection and total throughput
stats. You could run this will doing a ping flood (ping -f) against your
upstream router. Both iftop and the ping flood must be done as root.

fehlerhafte Linux-Installation

2004-03-28 Thread Christian Mancosu

Sehr geehrtes Debian-Team,

ich muss wahrscheinlich leider einen etwas
seltsamen Fehler melden.

Christian Mancosu

Actually the best thing to do is to install whatever version of
xlibmesa-gl you wish, and use dpkg-divert to install
/usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2 with a different name. This takes care of
dependency problems on my box.

Read over the dpkg-divert manpage for more info...

vfat and sync support as mount option

2004-03-28 Thread jjluza
Hello,

Is there a way to mount a fat filesystem with option sync ?
I read in the manpage of mount that only ext2, ext3 and ufs can use sync, but
I need it on an usb stick which, of course, works only with vfat.
I already try to force the use of sync over vfat, but I get a kernel oops.

Thanks.

Hm, I don't know. It does Depend on libmad0 which is a "MPEG audio
decoder library", though. Maybe it's possible to scale the amplitude of
MP3s without re-encoding them? Or maybe it just outputs normalised .wav
files?

IIRC, the Vorbis format has a metadata field within the file that lets
you specify a normalisation level, which decoders will honour.

Major Hair Loss After apt-get upgrade

2004-03-28 Thread Scarletdown
Okay, yesterday, I decided to do a mass package upgrade, so from a
command prompt I did an su to root and issued the apt-get upgrade
command. Nearly 600MB later, everything seemed to have gone well except
for some error (that I can't recall exactly) about libgimp1.3.

Anyway, I can now no longer download pictures out of my digital camera
(and old Polaroid PDC700, aka DC700 connected to the first serial port).
I've been using gtkam as my front end for, gphoto is it? And up until
the big upgrade, I had no problems at all with gtkam. Now, when I try
to access the camera, I get the following error:

Timeout reading from or writing to the port.
Could not get file list for folder '/'
There are other problems as well, but I will save those for another
post, since this one is the most critical at this time.

If it helps with troubleshooting, my Debian setup was accomplished via a
Knoppix3.3 hard drive install (knx-hdinstall)

So, any ideas why I can no longer access my camera?

More helpful idea: If this is anything like ut2003, your problem is
probably just the way that you launched the installer. If you do a "cd

convincing the system that the mount is in use. The solution would be
to do something more like "cd /mnt ; cdrom/[installer].sh".

This case it would be; the general case, not so. I was changing focus
from "my godfather" in particular to Joe Random Windoze Convertee, and
making a point about how JRWC would perceive his kmail setup to be
inferior in usability to KDE. Sorry if I wasn't making myself clear.

Buy? A 100MHz Pentium is good enough, and they come for free.

If you use a separate box, you can run sarge or sid on the
workstation, and woody with security updates on the firewall. Or
ipcop, or something else which is focussed on security. The more
minimal the installation on the firewall, the fewer potential holes
there are to crack it. You get better security with the firewall, and
the most up-to-date stuff on the workstation.

How to emulate having server 1 serving files off server 2?

2004-03-28 Thread Mauricio
Let's say I have a solaris 8 box (server 1) which has been serving
directories using automount (for NFS) and samba. It is also the
current imap server, with mailboxes being currently based off each
user's home dir. I would like, for now, to move those files to
server 2, a debian 3 box, for many reasons that are besides the point
here. According to the O'Reilly NFS/NIS book, I cannot have an
intermediate server that mounts directories off one server and make
them available to its own clients. Is there a way to weasel around
that? The main reason is that I am not really ready to go through
all clients and change their configurations.

I don't know what gpppon does.

I can tell you one thing though, our hypothetical bash script wouldn't
require GTK. The send/receive clone in discussion would log on to a
dialup, kick the MTA, fetch mail with pop, log off the dialup, and
launch a MUA. That is what Outlook Express does when it is behaving.

The stuff it's spitting out to stdout has to be sourced by your shell. So you can, for
instance, run the command in backticks, or output it to a file then source it.

On my machines, I use the following script as /etc/X11/Xsession.d/95gpg-agent-start

GPG_AGENT_INFO_FILE=${HOME}/.gpg-agent-info
GPG_AGENT_CONFIG_DIR=${HOME}/.gnupg
GPG_AGENT_CONFIG_FILE=${GPG_AGENT_CONFIG_DIR}/gpg-agent.conf

if [ -x /usr/bin/gpg-agent ]; then
  if [ -e ${GPG_AGENT_INFO_FILE} ]; then
OLD_GPG_AGENT=`cat ${GPG_AGENT_INFO_FILE}`
CHECK_PID=`echo ${OLD_GPG_AGENT}|cut -d ":" -f 2`
PROG=`ps u ${CHECK_PID} | tail -1 | sed -re 's/^([^ ]+) +[^ ]+ +[^ ]+ +[^ ]+ +[^
]+ +[^ ]+ +[^ ]+ +[^ ]+ +[^ ]+ +[^ ]+ +([^ ]+).*$/\1 \2/'`
if [ "x${PROG}x" != "x${USER} gpg-agentx" ]; then
  rm -f $GPG_AGENT_INFO_FILE
else
  export GPG_AGENT_INFO=${OLD_GPG_AGENT}
fi
  fi
  if [ ! -e ${GPG_AGENT_INFO_FILE} ]; then
if [ ! -e $GPG_AGENT_CONFIG_DIR ]; then
  mkdir -p $GPG_AGENT_CONFIG_DIR
  chmod 700 $GPG_AGENT_CONFIG_DIR
fi
if [ ! -e $GPG_AGENT_CONFIG_FILE ]; then
  touch $GPG_AGENT_CONFIG_FILE
fi
eval "$(gpg-agent --daemon --options $GPG_AGENT_CONFIG_FILE)"
echo $GPG_AGENT_INFO > $GPG_AGENT_INFO_FILE
chmod 600 $GPG_AGENT_INFO_FILE
  fi
fi

A bit evil, but it works fine for me. =)

I refused to try debian-installer because I don't wanted to spend to much time

at all; it's just that my work has priority over bug reporting.

But maybe I will give sarge a try soon and see.

If you aren't willing to help then don't sound like a victim... :)

I really recommend you consider two machines:
One for the "really must work" stuff.
Another for a testing platform of the things you need/want to upgrade
(>stable) to your "really must work" box. This limits your risk of
busting stuff if you move off of -stable in any way. It also allows you
to do bug reports on one side, and still have a working system on the
other side.

You would be surprised how effective bug reports are.

I find on many of the packages people really do try to get things
working, and the do a heck of a good job considering they only have one
or two computers to work with themselves. It is only by the feedback on
various combinations of hardware software that they learn more.

When you file a (good) bug report you are helping yourself get better
software, you are helping the maintainer learn more, and you are helping
Debian on the whole.

There is a concept of "nodes", the default node is the home directory
of the current user, you can establish more nodes by using the 'N'ode
command (similar to XTree/DOS' 'L'og (drive) command).
But avoid intersecting nodes, rather use META/F4-(new) 'N'ode then.

Btw, project development by original author Rob Juergens

I suggest you read the Netork Configuration chapter of the
Debian Reference. Also read the README for the hotplug
package and interfaces(5). If you use ifupdown-roam,
also read its README file.
The modern approach is to put an "exit 0" at the top of
/etc/pcmcia/network and to install the hotplug package.
When the network interface is detected, hotplug will run
ifup for it. For this to work you need to set up
/etc/network/interfaces in the way described in the hotplug
README file. Alternatively you can use ifplugd to bring
up the interface when and only when the interface is
connected to a live network.

Make sure that the interface is not listed on an "auto"
line in /etc/network/interfaces.
Thanks Thomas. I was able to get it working by removing the 'auto' line
from /etc/network/interfaces, and installing the 'hotplug' package. I
still feel I need to pursue all the references you mentioned to make
sure it is setup correctly and to make sure I understand how these
packages (pcmcia-cs, hotplug) relate, etc.

the changes and execute the command the network comes up fine. Why is it
not coming up automatically? I've read through the docs in
/usr/share/doc/pcmcia-cs and I'm off now to read the HOW-TO referenced

I'm still curious to know why it got configured differently this time.
I'm pretty sure I used the same options throughout, but...

All sugestions welcome.

Ah, it turns out that I was using an old version of less. It works now

I also see that you consider it a bug when manual pages use "-"

No, no. I thought you meant I was criticizing you. No, PPP isn't a
bad protocol (even though it's used for bad things like PPPoE). Just
saying having exim try to send immediately instead of holding onto
mail when you're offline and letting pppd kick sendq when you connect
seems a little silly.

Manual pages and UTF-8

2004-03-28 Thread Per Olofsson
I'm running with an UTF-8 locale and this causes minus signs (dashes)
in many manual pages to become garbled. It only seems to happen in
text in the "italic" style, i.e. the ".I" macro. It also only happens
to bare minus signs; if they are written as "\-", it works fine. Try,
for example, "man jed" with an UTF-8 locale.

Am I doing something wrong? Does it work better for anyone else? Or is
it a bug in these manual pages, or perhaps in man-db or groff?

Yes, the line with testing is for testing. Little Question on gpg-agent. The

There are no coordinated security updates for testing except right

If its a workstation and not a server I think you can upgrade the sarge
(testing) without waiting for it to become stable.

Personally I am using unstable for several years now (over 7 I believe)
and rarely had a problem, and usually my fault anyway (I tend to
heavily abuse systems in ways they shouldn't ;-)

DVD-R burning problems - solved! :-)

2004-03-28 Thread Jonathan Melhuish
As so often happens, I'm composing a message to the list and think of
one last thing I could try which then fixes it. I thought I'd post
anyway, just in case someone is Googling for a solution to the same problem!

Basically on trying to burn a DVD in my Pioneer 105 on my linux box, I
got the error:

dvdrecord: Input/output error. write_g1: scsi sendcmd: no error
CDB: 2A 00 00 00 03 0F 00 00 1B 00
status: 0x2 (CHECK CONDITION)

Sense Key: 0x6 Unit Attention, Segment 0
Sense Code: 0x29 Qual 0x00 (power on, reset, or bus device reset
occurred) Fru 0x0

My problems were solved by removing my BenQ CD-RW drive. If anyone can
explain why, and preferably suggest a workaround, that would be most
appreciated!

Cheers,

Jon

YES exactly. I don't understand the fuss. I love stable for servers and
I can wait a couple more years for the next one.
And I LOVE unstable for my laptops and desktops.

This is all I need for my stable servers:
http://www.backports.org/debian/dists/woody/

Samba 3.0, Apache 2, Courier-imap-ssl 3.0.2, Cups 1.1,
MySQL 4, etc. and much more...

Get your Exim 4.3 backport here:
deb http://www.logic.univie.ac.at/~ametzler/debian/exim4manpages/ woody/
deb http://www.logic.univie.ac.at/~ametzler/debian/gnutls/ woody/

And you have this: http://www.apt-get.org/

Now you have LAMP, with the latest file, print, and mail server
packages on the trusted Woody stable platform with the best package
management tool out there.

To top it all off, there is not profit hungry company here that will
start jerking us around so they can make more money.

It doesn't get any better than this.

Just my opinion.

Andy

XFree Cursor Themes

2004-03-28 Thread Simon Watson
Hi,

I'm having great problems using the different themes of cursor in
XFree86. I'm using the update-alternatives method to change to
"whiteglass" theme - and this works to a point. When gdm loads, all is
fine - but when I log into Gnome - the icons become "huge", sort of

hair that appears when you drag a window around, don't work either - and
that icon is retrieved from core.

Has anyone experienced this, or knows how to fix it?

Thanks

That makes sense. Those A-law files are being in a telephony-related

Well, if you hadn't told me that, I would have expected "WAV/AU samples"
to include the file above with "WAVE audio" in the file output!

I know you really do not want to hear that, but it is really
unplayable at the moment. My game crashes all the time and is
unplayable, due to this bug. Everyone one the cc list wants the bug
fixed and has offered to help.

If you really want to install it, I just started up two xterms, and
mounted the cd in one, the other I ran the path from my home
directory. Like this, home: sh /cdrom/ut2004/Linux_whatever.
This seemed to work fine for me, but as mentioned before it would
probably be fine to copy the script to the harddrive.

If you do get it installed, make sure you look at your .ut2004.log
and if necessary post it to the proper bug. It might not hurt, to
email Epic, Atari about all your troubles.

Thanks for that info I did not know. I had to format everything last
night to play at a lan party and had to install Win2k Server for playing
some games at a lan party. I have to redo everything today. I left a lot
of space on my drive for it.

I refused to try debian-installer because I don't wanted to spend to much time
with coping with bugs and writing bug reports. "Debian â because it *must*

Commercial impetus to get the next release on the shelves ASAP is
*never* a consideration with Debian. Consequently, when a release
does come, it has had more time to be tested and will be more free
of bugs than other distributions.

Sure, there *are* large gaps between releases, but it's swings and
roundabouts: given the choose between support for the newest software
and hardware, or stability and fewer bugs, then I choose for myself
(and would choose for my company given the chance), Debian precisely
for these reasons.
