Just pinging this thread, since I haven't seen a response yet.

Does anyone have any pointers on getting software RAID working in
Debian, preferably pre-install? Can it be done at all?
Yes, it can be done, but it's some work. There are a couple (two or
three) HOWTOs on the Net, but these were in an evolving state when I
needed them in last autumn and did help, but didn't work when I tried to
follow them exactly..

Since then, I have successfully followed the instructions given at
http://people.debian.org/~blade/install/index.old.html#lvm. Note that
you _must_ build a kernel image package of your own, the Debian kernels
apparently cannot mount a root device that's on LVM-on-RAID.

Tobias

You could try the "Software Raid Documentation" message [1] posted last
week.

As for whether the referenced document is useful or not, that isn't

2004-05-11 Thread Andres LG
Is it possible to follow threads on this list using KMail ( I'm using Opera as

I've tried to modify e-mail preferences in Opera, passing on "mailto" links to
an external program, in this case /usr/bin/kmail, but it just open it without
displaying a new message dialog box.

any idea?

Looking at the dependencies of webmin in the official unstable

needing to upgrade more than libpam-runtime. But I am not sure of that;
you would have to try it out.

Better, a search for webmin at backports.org [1] turns up an apt

Are you familiar with using non-official apt repositories?

Ask here if you need help making the decision.

Hey Tomy,

A HTTP header (often used to redirect) can only be sent before any other
output is sent to the browser since sending output automatically triggers a
content header. Something was outputted already, so it complains that it
can't sent the header (to redirect) again.

Solution: The output started at line 265 of config.inc.php. That is the
configuration file and it is not supposed to output anything, just set up
some values. What happened is this: You edited the config file (username, db
server, password, etc) and by doing so you added something (check line 265)
that generates output. Fix it, and you'll be ready to go.

joost

2.6.6 and /dev/modem

2004-05-11 Thread Tim
I've recently moved from a 2.4.25 kernel to 2.6.6. Now my ppp is not
working. I checked the /dev directory and the problem appears to be
related to the /dev/modem symbolic link. Under the 2.4.25 kernel, this
points to /dev/ttySCHF0. The mystery is that /dev/ttySCHf0 is missing
whenever I boot under 2.6.6. Though is "reappears" under the older
kernel.

Is this possibly a devfs/udev issue? Neither are installed currently.

Thanks,

Tim

I disagree. In fact I tend to ignore that. There have been many
occasions when hardware I buy that's advertised as "Linux Compatible"
turns out to function poorly under Linux. Very frequently my best
experiences are with hardware that the manufacturer never bothers to
advertise as Linux compatible and yet it works flawlessly. This issue is
more complex than you suggest. For this reason I poll mailing lists and
newsgroups for advice from people who have had good experiences with their
hardware under Linux. This has consistently provided me good results.

Best Wishes.

I just did an install mid-end of April using stable. A friend helped
me upgrade to testing. The only other two things I installed after
that was apache and php - both using apt-get. In my /usr/lib folder,
the file libmdbodbc.so.0 symlinked to libmdbodbc.so.0.0.0 and the
.0.0.0 file is dated Feb 18.

If no further ideas, I'll post a bug to mdbtools.

I can't find your original post, so I might be off topic, but I use

Hi,
so that means that you would set the dev= parameter of cdrecord as:
cdrecord dev=0,0,0 for the dvd
or
cdrecord dev=0,1,0 for the cdrom
consult 'man cdrecord' for more options.

2004-05-11 Thread Erik Christiansen

After an "apt-get install newsgate" (woody), there doesn't seem
to be any form of doco. Both man and info draw a blank, and:

o apt-cache search showed no separate newsgate manpage package.

o The only hits, on googling www.debian.org for "newsgate", were two
 long package lists!

Assuming the google site search included all maillist archives, is it
advisable to look elsewhere for a working "Mail to News and News to Mail

This can happen in cases where you've installed several applications as

I don't use KDE, but I know there are a number of Debian KDE packages of

Correct this manually by executing:

If you think that you can track this down to a legitimate bug, that

So Debian does respect the existing files.

nvidia-kernel-source, 2.6.6

2004-05-11 Thread Jim McCloskey

I've been happily using the Debian nvidia packages for some time
(nvidia-kernel-source and nvidia-glx). Currently, I have the versions
from unstable. However, I recently upgraded to kernel 2.6.6 and so had
to re-compile the kernel modules provided by the package. Compilation
and installation seemed to go fine, but the nvidia module won't
load. The error message from modprobe is:

  version magic `2.6.6 686 gcc-3.3' should be `2.6.6 preempt PENTIUM4 gcc-3.3'
  Invalid module format

There has been much discussion of problems with the nvidia driver
under 2.6.6:

http://www.uwsg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0404.2/1679.html
http://seclists.org/lists/linux-kernel/2004/May/0191.html

but the discussions I've seen all have to do with pre-release
versions, and they also seem to suggest that the problem will arise
only if the option CONFIG_4KSTACKS is turned on. For me, though, this
option is not turned on:

  # CONFIG_4KSTACKS is not set

Does anyone know if I can get around this problem?

Thanks very much,

Jim

Problem compiling rekall-2.3.0 on Debian 2.4.24 i686 (KDE 3.2.2)

I have been trying to install rekall for the past 2 weeks. I cannot seem to be able to

Below are the last few lines from ./configure --disable-mt

checking if Qt compiles without flags... yes
checking for moc... /usr/share/qt3/bin/moc
checking for uic... /usr/bin/uic

checking whether uic supports -nounload ... yes
checking if Qt needs -ljpeg... no
checking for rpath... yes
checking for KDE... kde_incdir is NO\n
configure: error:
in the prefix, you've chosen, are no KDE headers installed. This will fail.
So, check this please and use another prefix!

Am I missing out any qt/kde libraries in my system? If so, can anybody give me any
hints?

Has anybody got rekall working on their box?

Thank you.

Installed webmin using apt-get

2004-05-11 Thread Michael Banta

I installed webmin using apt-get, which worked
fine.  I connected to webmin via a browser and discovered there were no
installed modules.  Someone suggested doing:

apt-cache search webmin

which should a lot of modules available to
install.  I want to install the ldap module but it is not within the found
modules in my apt-cache search.  So, I went to webmin site and downloaded
the module from there and uncompressed it.

Using webmin I tried to add this module but got
this error:

Failed to install module... Module ldap-useradmin requires
Webmin version 1.140 or above.

I am running:

Version 0.94 on Athas (Debian GNU/Linux
3.0)

because this is what apt installed on my
system.  I update my package lists on a regular basis so I assume this is
the lastest version that debian offers as a .deb package.

So I guess I either don't run an ldap
module for webmin, or I uninstall the .deb package and download a tarball of the
lastest version that supports the ldap module.

If I choose option number 2, then I will
not be able keep webmin update via apt-get, right? I would have to just
reinstall new tarball versions as they become available, right?

Any advice would be great.
Thanks
Mike

Are you sure you don't have any unofficial packages from outside debian,
or old libs in /usr/local/lib? If so, file a bug on the mdbtools (I
guess) package.

The EXTRAVERSION is equivalent to the --append-to-version parameter.
Changing EXTRAVERSION implies that you changed the source code in some way.
If you change EXTRAVERSION, the modules will go into the
/lib/modules/2.6.xEXTRAVERSION directory. If you use the -rev parameter,
then you can have multiple .debs with different configurations but they
will all put the modules into /lib/modules/2.6.x.

For a newbie, I'd recommend using the -rev parameter since you probably
won't be changing the source code.

If I use both and 'make-kpkg clean' before eath make-kpkg is this the
safest or can I get away with using one of EXTRAVERSION/-rev.
Yes.

With which browser? Mozilla, afaik, doesn't use gconf at all, so

"connection refused" message means that the host you were connecting to

I've never heard of zless, so I don't think it was A...

Doesn't look like there's an alternative either.

There are more recent builds (with security patches applied) that are
in the security archives, or you can use make-kpkg to compile more
recent kernel *versions* (see www.kernel.org for the current versions)

The above packages are probably marked as automatically installed for
some reason. Did you bulk tag a pile of packages as automatically
installed when you started using aptitude?

You could run:
aptitude install checkinstall kapptemplate kbabel kbugbuster kcachegrind
 kdesdk-kfile-plugins kdesdk-misc kdesdk-scripts kompare kuiviewer poxml
 umbrello valgrind valgrind-calltree

Or you could manually tag those packages as /not/ being automatically
installed in the interface (with "m" I believe)

You probably also need to check that other packages that you want aren't
set as having been automatically installed too.

I have

eval `lesspipe`

in my ~/.profile to set this up.

lesspipe is part of the less package. You should already have it if you
have less installed.

Maybe this (admittedly cryptic) example will help:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ alias foobar='echo foo; echo bar'
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ foobar
foo
bar
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ : && foobar
foo
bar
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ : || foobar
bar
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ foobarfn () {
> echo foo
> echo bar
> }
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ : && foobarfn
foo
bar
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ : || foobarfn
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

At least you should be able to see that there's a
difference. Now let me try to explain the difference you're
seeing, in case it's not clear.

"A && B" is a shell idiom meaning "try A, and if
it succeeds, then also do B". Similarly, "A || B" means
"try A, or if that fails, then do B".
':' is a bash builtin which always evaluates to a success.

So ': && echo foo' should always echo foo, and ': || echo
foo' should never echo foo. So as a user, I'd expect
'some-test && win+' only de 'win+' if some-test succeeds.
As we see in my foobar example above, that's not how it
works with an alias, whereas a function works as expected.

Vincent's other example regards output redirection. Trying
to redirect the output (or standard error) of such a
multi-command alias will give surprising results: only the
last command's output will be redirected.

I advise you to use a function (or even a small shell
script) instead of an alias for compound commands like your
examples. As I hope you can see, the disadvantages are
real. Worse still, they can be subtle and confusing,
especially to someone unfamiliar with these (not uncommon)
shell features. The savings of using an alias instead of a
function in order to avoid having to type a few parentheses
and brackets once is a false economy.

good times,
Vineet

aptitude farted?

2004-05-11 Thread Silvan
This is interesting. I'm about to build something from source. I don't want
to, but I can't find an apt source anywhere. I'm going to have to build some
newer-than-installed libs too, looks like, and it's probably going to get
ugly. To try to make it less ugly, I wanted to install checkinstall.

aptitude is trying to remove a bunch of stuff I most assuredly DO need. I'm
hacking on a KDE app. I don't want to remove these. WTF??

Broken packages? Tangled deps or recommends? I've only just started using
aptitude instead of apt-get, because of a recent thread right here expounding
its virtuous ability to track things that were installed along with something
else, and then remove them when that thing wears out its welcome. So you
don't install some-dumb-flummy-0.0.2, have it pull in 30 bizarre and
otherwise useless libs, and then keep maintaining those libs needlessly in
perpetuity. It sounded like a good idea. It sure doesn't seem to be working
as expected.

Do I want to continue? Of course not, dolt. Back to apt-get.

Just for fun, I tried kdevelop3, and got the same list of things aptitude is
convinced I no longer need. No, I'm only installing a development IDE for
KDE stuff. I don't need any of the kde devel stuff. What, do you think I'm
going to use the IDE to develop KDE stuff? No. I'm going to use it to write
bash scripts.

(I'm chuckling while I write this, so don't take this rant too seriously.)

So what's for it? Use aptitude to install this list of things to reaffirm
that I really want them? Edit some file somewhere? What?

Did I maybe lose some related package along the way without taking note? I
just updated yesterday. Maybe something had to be removed without my
noticing, and now that it's gone, aptitude thinks I no longer need this
string of packages.

Installation problem: can't mount CD drive

2004-05-11 Thread Catatonic Porpoise
I'm trying to install Debian GNU/Linux 3.0rev2 i386 by CD, using a copy of
binary CD 1 I burned myself, on a new machine. The CD boots and the
installer runs fine, it gets to the part where it installs the kernel and
driver modules, and then it asks me what to install from - CD, floppies,
NFS, etc - even though the install guide indicates that it should know to
install from CD-ROM. When I select the CD-ROM option, it says the CD was
not mounted successfully (that's all, no reason given or anything).

I tried mounting it manually from ash, the little shell built into the
installer, with (from the / directory) "mkdir cdrom" "mount -t iso9660
/dev/cdrom /cdrom". It gives me a line saying that /dev/cdrom is read-only
and it's mounting it that way, then it says "Mount failed: invalid
argument". /cdrom is a symlink to /hdc, which I understand is supposed to
be the master of the second IDE device; according to the BIOS, this is
correct. I have tried:

-checking the options I used in Nero against the ones given in the install
guide, and burning another CD
-setting "Plug 'n Play OS" to No in the BIOS setup
-removing write privileges for everyone from /cdrom

None has helped. Any ideas? (I'm new to Linux, but I've had a bit of
experience with FreeBSD. [I ended up not using it much after it was
installed, because it didn't have a driver for my network card.] In case
it matters, this computer hasn't and doesn't have any other operating
systems installed.)

I have a Lite-On LDW-851S, with which I have been able to burn
both DVD+R (several) and DVD-R disks (one) with one "coaster"
(actually some parts are readable). Surprisingly the one coaster
is the branded media.

To burn I use dvd+rw-tools with option -speed=1 (which for the
Lite-On means 2.4X for +R and 2X for -R).

Of course. In many cases like for win+, functions are not needed
(if one considers that the user will always type "win+" without
anything else). But functions help by controlling the arguments
and behave more consistently when there are redirections and &.

Hi:

That's what I did initially, but when compiling the VMware tools, the
vmware-config-tools.pl script complains that the kernel versions are not the
same, and that the module will not work. So, it seems I must have a kernel
source named 2.4.18-bf2.4 for this to work. If anybody got it working, I
would appreciate some pointers.

Thank you.

Which package to pipe to gz automatically?

2004-05-11 Thread Silvan
I used to be able to, for example

less README.gz

Something was set up somewhere to automagically substitute

gunzip -c README.gz|less

for this. I don't *think* it's anything I set up for myself. I have the word
"lesspipe" in my head as the way I set this up, but I'm not apt-caching up
anything that looks encouraging.

Is there some package that provides this automagically? Am I just losing my
mind?

You can add arguments to both. But they are interpreted differently.
With complex aliases, this can lead to unwanted effects. In functions,
you can control the arguments (by ignoring them, by returning an error
if they are incorrect, and so on).

If you add arguments or something else (a redirection or a & for
instance) after the alias in the command line, this will apply
to the last command.

Here's another example:

ay:~> alias foo='ls -R > bar; date'
ay:~> foo &

This is equivalent to

  ls -R > bar
  date &

not

  { ls -R > bar; date } &

(This is the zsh syntax, I don't know about the other shells.)

> All I know about Linux has been gleaned from the lists and web
> pages so this is a bit too cryptic for my meager education.
> Could you please give a few details or point me to where
> there's an explanation?

Well, here an analogy with mathematics. You can write c = a + b
and you consider c * d. If you regard "c = a + b" as a string
replacement, then c * d would mean a + b * d; this is how aliases
work. If you regard "c = a + b" as an expression definition or an
equality (the normal case in math, but this should also be the
case in Unix shells), then c * d means (a + b) * d.

Aliases are just string replacements. Functions are much more
structured (very similar to shell scripts).

In a shell, if I type "foo", this is just like a command and I also
expect that "foo &" would start something in the background. Ditto
for "foo > file": I expect all the output of foo to be redirected
to file.

I once had something similar but for me the issue was cause by not
having "auto eth1" in my /etc/network/interfaces file.
After adding that ifup command worked.

However since you already have this stance, it must be something else
(duh i'm a real Sherlock here :)). Are you sure your dhcp is working?
Since eth0 is active after adding a fixed ip, but not when an ip is
requested via dhcp, dhcp might be the issue?
Is the dhcpd daemon running? Is /etc/default/dhcp configured
correctly?
Nothing strange in /etc/dhcpd.conf?

Benedict

Ligthning strike killed my Linksys wireless router. I have replaced it
and wavemon shows good signal strength at my computer but no link.
Presumably the problem is just in the setup but I cannot access the
setup. This computer (my daughter's) is connected to the router by an
ethernet card and can reach the web. When I try to access the router
setup by http://192.168.1.1 I get a message that the connection was
refused. This worked yesterday so I believe the problem is with a
file permission. Searching the log files I find the message:

   Tiger gconfd (emily-1192): Resolvcd address
"xml:readonly::/etc/gconf/gconf_xml_defaulsts" to a read-only config
source at position 2

I have changed the permissions of the files in /etc/gconf to 664 but
this does not solve the problem.

The kernel is 2.4.22 and the browser is Mozilla 1.5-3 running in xdm and
icewm.

Any suggestions as to how to get my computer link back up would be
greatly appreciated.

The RPM you installed placed all the Java stuff somewhere. I would guess
that it is in /usr/java. You will want to set your JAVA_HOME environment
variable to /usr/java/j2sdk (look in /usr/java for the
appropriate something).

As for getting java and jar and other such Java-oriented executables in

executables and their man pages into the alternatives system.

If you run it without arguments, it will report its usage; it requires
one argument: that same JAVA_HOME directory. You can also optionally
give it the priority you want it to use for update-alternatives; if you
don't supply a priority, it will attempt to derive one from the path of
the directory you gave it.

Actually you only need the headers package for you kernel.

apt-get install kernel-headers-2.4.18-bf2.4

VMware's install will find them easily automagically.

Also get it:
http://packages.debian.org/stable/devel/kernel-headers-2.4.18-bf2.4

and then dpkg -i kernel-headers--2.4.18-bf2.4

Either way, is all you need.

I don't know much about SATA or PATA, but power saving modes shouldn't
normally be needed with desktop/server HD. Spinning them down isn't
recommended since desktop disks usually have a limited lifetime in
terms of spin-downs (although I've heard some disks like to the head to
be parked once a week or so for lubbing reasons).

Anyway, more to the point, I think you should check your fan. In such a
setup you may need an extra fan for the disks or the case. (could be the
cpu is running very warm or the case isn't cooled enough.

Another thing that can be hard on the disks is power surges. Make sure
you have a good PSU in there and a UPS can also be a good idea if you
don't have one.

Whatever camera you get, I'd recommend getting a USB card reader so you
can pop the card in, mount it like a drive, and copy the files to your

it's easier to get fully Linux-compatible card readers than cameras.

install path for a deb package

2004-05-11 Thread Lars E. D. Jensen
Hi list

I'm trying to make a deb package for the first time.

My rules script looks like this:

---cut---
install: build
dh_testdir
dh_testroot
dh_clean -k
dh_installdirs

# Add here commands to install the package into debian/vpopmail.
$(MAKE) install-strip DESTDIR=$(CURDIR)/debian/vpopmail
# DESTDIR=/var/vpopmail
# prefix=$(CURDIR)/debian/vpopmail/usr
---cut---

When I install the created deb package it installs in:
/root/vpopmail-5.4.3/debian/tmp/bin/vadddomain

It's not supposed to install here, is it?

How can I install the files (placed in /root/vpopmail-5.4.3/debian/tmp/ with
my current package) in e.g. /var/vpopmail/ ?

Thanks

Lars

I would prefer a program that respect the existing files ( excepting an

thing:

[2004-05-11 12:16:14]: error: command not in docroot

It is in the document root, its in the folder apacheis set up for
that useer DocumentRoot, and I cant change the directory to anything
else; My question is this:

1. Why am I getting this error.
2. How can I fix it so that I get cgi (perl scripts) running without
suexec stopping them, while still giving people that path to there
scripts to they dont have to recode them all??

I tried taking suexec out of the apache config by renaming it like
the apache docs say but all that did was make the server seqfualt any
time a request for a cgi script happened.

I got the machine to boot and I restored the menu.1st.
Remaining question, though -- how can I make grub boot
from a cdrom?

Thanks,

Richard

/etc/init.d/nvidia-glx start
cd /lib/modules/2.6.5.dilbert/nvidia
modprobe nvidia

Then in /etc/modules.conf make sure you have the "nvidia" module listed.
You may also want to run "update-modules" after loading the module. It
seems to append the /etc/modules.conf file with whatever extras you have
loaded, but aren't in that file.

hope that helps,

Installing Debian Stable with Software RAID

2004-05-11 Thread Jeremy Brown
Hello List,

I'm relatively new to Debian, but am considering installing it on
several new servers I'm setting up. At least one of the servers will
need its root partition stored on a software RAID volume though, and a
casual glance at both the Debian stable and testing installers seems to
indicate that they do not support the creation of a software RAID
volumes for use as the root install partition (well, at all
really)...although it does look like testing's installer has LVM support.

Is there a general procedure to follow for installing Debian on a
software RAID volume? Is this something that's even possible right now?

Thanks in advance!

Jeremy

Xwindow Panic

2004-05-11 Thread Pedro M. (Morphix User)
I decided to install the new Xwindow version, but I panic when I see the
program asking (again) the configuration files. I have my XF86Config
files installed and I don't want to install them again ( it can happen a
disaster).

So, I suggest the program preserve the config files if the user doesn't
decide to reinstall them ( giving the concrete command).

And include the "skip" option in synaptic to stop installing a package
is something is going wrong or un-desired.

Regards.

I recently upgraded from kernel 2.4.25 to kernel 2.6.5 (im using

1. the nvidia graphics module isnt loaded on startup (i have to do
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.5-1-k7/nvidia/nvidia.ko before i can enter the
xserver)

2. permission are mucked up, for both oss (/dev/dsp,/dev/mixer) alsa
(/dev/snd/*), and nvidia stuff (/dev/nv*), when i change anything
in /dev (creating a folder, changing permissions) the changes revert on
reboot

grub, deleted menu.1st by mistake

2004-05-11 Thread Richard Weil
I have a fairly findamental problem with GRUB right
now.

I appear to have accidently deleted the menu.1st file
in /boot/grub. My machine gets to the grub> prompt and
then I'm stuck -- I can't get any command to work.
Also, GRUB seems to have so taken over the boot
process I can't boot from cdrom to fix the problem.

I believe the partitions are something like:

partition 1: Windows XP
partition 2: /boot
partition 3: /
partition 4: swap

I could have them out of order -- can I get GRUB to
list partitions?

Other questions:

o Assuming the partitions are right, how can I get
GRUB to boot? The kernel I'm using is the 2.6.3 from
sarge (it is initrd).

o How can I make GRUB boot from cdrom?

Thanks

Richard

That's when it was compiled. No, it's not the most recent version, go
browse through aptitude and you'll see more than one version of

Well, if you have scanned all the pages in about the same position,
and you can establish reassonably well the coordinates of the crop,
you can write a script that does all the work in one step (containing
all the inner steps).

Have you ever felt a hard drive that's been running for a long time
without stopping? They get hot! It's a moving part, and it moves
*fast*, so it's bound to generate heat.

Koolance does make hard drive heatsinks, though.

They run hot. If you want to balance noise and heat versus hard drive
longevity, have the disks spin down after so many minutes of
inactivity.

VMware 4 and Woody R2

2004-05-11 Thread Alfredo Cole
Hi:

I want to install Debian 3.0 R2 in a VMware virtual machine. The VMware tools
require that the kernel sources are present, and the linux.h is available.
However, there are no kernel sources for 2.4.18-bf2.4 when I do apt-get
install kernel-source. Where can I find them?

Thank you.

Can you post the relevant portions of your boot log when using the 2.4.18
kernel? That may provide some insight. Also, the output of lsmod may
prove helpful (also from working 2.4.18). It seems that you're missing
some kind of driver support, but it isn't the file system and it isn't the
controller, so that only leaves the SCSI command set, which doesn't seem
likely since it seems to attach the disk OK.

be able to diagnose your problem here. I think this is a lilo config
error.
