You should find it in the tcl8.4-dev binary package,
at /usr/lib/tcl8.4/tclConfig.sh

Hmmm...I am not familiar with using 'videogen' to generate modelines. In
fact, it has been a VERY long time since I have even worked with
modelines. The only way I configure X in debian now is to run:
`dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86`

Then, when it gets to the screen that says "Please choose a method for
selecting your monitor characteristics.", I select 'Advanced'. The next
two screens are where I enter the horizontal sync range and vertical
refresh range.

If 'videogen' works like I think it does, I believe your procedure will
work. (I just installed it. Using your settings, I got about 85Hz vert
refresh at 1024x768 when using max_dotclk = 90).

I am no expert, but after looking around a bit it appears that
increasing the dotclock beyond what the monitor is rated for may be
relitively harmless.

>From 'XFree86 Video Timings HOWTO':
"Having a pixel clock higher than the monitor's maximum
bandwidth is rather harmless... It's exceeding the rated maximum
sync frequencies that's problematic."

Thanks to all for the input. After reading the reponses to my question, I'm
inclined to try experimenting by skipping recommended packages so that I can
gain some experience with what happens -- if anything -- and keep the system
cleaner and more secure.

Again, thanks.

Lost Labyrinth

2005-08-21 Thread Markus Döbele
Hallo Debian,

I like your distribution a lot!

A few days ago we finally released the first final version of our game "Lost
Labyrinth" for Linux.
The newest version at the moment is 1.0.1.

I also created a rpm version of the game. I don't know right now how to build
a deb file. But it should be easy to install the game with alien.

Maybe you like to include our game in your distribution?
Its only 4.4 MB big.
Its a game like the old Roque and for Windows we have a lot of fans already.
I would love it if we had a lot of Linux gamers too!

If you like have a look here:

Thanx,
Markus

I had thought the introduction of linux-image terminology was a replacement
for kernel-image terminology in order to provide name-space for hurd images.
Is there really more than a change in naming convention between kernel-image
and linux-image? I think that someone running Sarge cannot be running
linux-image, as there are no kernel packages of whatever version number in
sarge that have the 'linux-image' designation.

MakeMaker configured to put scripts in /usr/bin/

2005-08-21 Thread Brian Sammon
If I have Makefile.PL as follows:
  use ExtUtils::MakeMaker;
  WriteMakefile(
NAME => 'MyLib',
EXE_FILES => ['MyProg']
);

Then "perl Makefile.PL; make; make install" puts MyProg in /usr/bin/
I was expecting it to be put in /usr/local/bin.
It seems that the debian perl package has ExtUtils::MakeMaker built with the
default value of INSTALLSCRIPT set to /usr/bin/ instead of /usr/local/bin/

Since MyProg is not part of the debian distribution (and anything built this
way would not be) it seems to me the default for INSTALLSCRIPT should be
/usr/local/bin/

Is this something I should file as a bug/feature-request, or is it more likely
that I am completely misunderstanding things?

P.S. Is there a better list for me to be posting this to?

Same here. ctxextensions is b0rked (every option shows up in the
context menu, even if I disable them) and also causes firefox to crash
when entering the extensions menu. I ended up just uninstalling. I
have also lost the ability to middle click on anything except for links
ending in .html. For example, middle-clicking to open a new tab from a
story on the front page of slashdot doesn't work. It treats it like a
paste of a URL in a neutral part of the page (if there is something in
the cut buffer) and goes there instead. Very annoying.

I install them only if I know I need them. Usually I avoid installing
suggested packages. I frequently avoid installing recommended
packages! Often the maintainers get carried away with extra packages
or with recommending their own other packages.

When I install software I look at the list of recommended and
suggested packages and if one of them seems reasonable I install them
as well. But if they do not seem reasonable then I do not install
them.

The caveat here is that I have been using UNIX/GNU systems for many
years and can make a fairly well educated guess at what is reasonable
to install or not. But often experience is the only way to learn.
And since installing and removing software is so easy I suggest to you
that you just try it and gain experience through it.

'Suggested' just means they'll enhance the functionality of the

I recommend that you install postfix.

  apt-get install --purge postfix

Then when it asks you for the configuration use this one:

Local delivery only - You are not on a network. Mail for local
  users is delivered.

However exim4 has the same configuration. If that is what you want
you could do the same thing with exim4 too. And exim is a fine
mailer. Since you already have exim installed use this command to
reconfigure it:

  dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config

Then when it asks you for the configuration use this one:

local delivery only; not on a network

That is a pretty darn simple configuration.

> I don't want to learn to use this thing! If I want to get mail off
> my local system I will use my ISP's smtp server. This thing's documentation

I realize you are upset about this. But your sentences do not make
sense. You could not be using your ISP smtp to get mail off of your
local system.

> And if the answer is "exim is the simplest" then tell me, how can I do
> without an MTA? (I have, BTW, fooled around with the "deliver" package.)

I can't imagine a simpler configuration. When asked to configure the
mailer you would have been presented with this menu:

internet site; mail is sent and received directly using SMTP
mail sent by smarthost; received via SMTP or fetchmail
mail sent by smarthost; no local mail
local delivery only; not on a network
manually convert from handcrafted Exim v3 configuration
  no configuration at this time

For your preference you would choose "local delivery only; not on a
network" and be happy. In what way could this be made simpler such
that your would be happy trying to configure it? If you can think of
a way then file an enhancement request on the package.

By the way, the deliver package is something completely different. It
is not an MTA and will not operate as a substitute for exim or postfix.

The less number of packages installed => less number of bugs => less
number of security holes => more secured system.

In general, I will not install a package unless I need it. It can always
be installed whenever I need it. Moreover with auto-apt, the packages
can be installed on the fly and the process is nearly automatic.

2005-08-21 Thread Bob Proulx
Malcolm Carlock wrote:

Good question. But the problem is how to do that?

Certainly the new kernel you are installing does not *require* the
'discover' package to be installed. So the kernel package can't list
it as a Depends: because people not wanting discover would rightfully
call that a bug. So how would this get installed automatically on an
upgrade?

http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/release-notes/ch-information.en.html

I suppose this could be documented more visibly in the upgrade release
notes for the new kernel. I looked through the above guide and find
that discover and hotplug are mentioned in the sound configuration
only. I would prefer if this were documented as recommended in the
kernel upgrade section. I just filed Bug#324401 with this addition
suggestion for the release notes.

Users upgrading from a non-modular bootstrapping linux kernel such
as the Woody installer boot-floppies 2.4.18-bf24 kernel may need to
specify driver modules to be loaded for their hardware when
upgrading to the newer moduler 2.6 series kernel. The 'discover'
and 'hotplug' packages are useful to detect hardware and to
automatically load the required modules. It is recommended to
install those packages prior to upgrading to a linux 2.6 kernel.
The 'udev' package is also useful in conjunction with the linux 2.6
kernel the /dev directory. But see the warnings below in the
section "Switching to 2.6 may activate udev" for more detail.

Anyone installing a new Debian installation using the new
debian-installer will get discover and hotplug installed by default.
It is a new installation without any history. The installer puts it
there by default. After that further customization is allowed by the
admin.

So this problem really only affects upgrades from a non-modular kernel
to a modular kernel. I can't say most but everyone *should have*
upgraded to a modular kernel in Woody and manually specified the
drivers they needed in /etc/modules. But for those that didn't and
are now upgrading from Woody to Sarge and find that all of the kernels
in Sarge are modular they are now finding this problem on upgrades.

Seeing pretty much the same here. No real problems with it without
extensions. Installation of the latest update killed all 4 extensions that
were installed. Moved the ~/.mozilla directory and let it start fresh, still
problems. Attempting to install most extensions causes firefox to segfault.
Restarting firefox, the extension that caused the problem shows up in the list
of installed extensions, but any attempt to configure or uninstall it results
in another segfault. Oddly, the [EMAIL PROTECTED] status bar extension
installed
perfectly and seems to run fine. FoxCast and Spellbound exhibit the segfault
problem.

I've spent a considerable amount of time today to convert my ancient

Other than printing to files from the various browsers, what other
methods could I look at? I am aware that reST can render LaTeX, but
I'd rather use the flexibility of CSS for the formatting, rather
than having to fight with LaTeX over layout issues.

How can I reliably turn XHTML+CSS into PostScript?

ANSI color code chart

2005-08-21 Thread Tong
Hi,

I'm looking for a ANSI color code chart that can show me the code and
effect of ansi color codes.

I remember that once I had one, but now I can't find it on my HD or on
Inet any more.

The description was:

ANSI terminal color chart generator, by ijabbott
A simple Bourne shell script to generate an ANSI terminal color chart -
background color, foreground color, normal and high intensity. Output fits
nicely on an 80x24 terminal.

If anyone know or have such tool, please let me know.

thanks

Oops.

Yes, perhaps I have misunderstood you. I was refering myself to the fact
that not all DVDs that I am able to write are readable by all DVD
drives I have access to, including the DVD reader on my iBook (Late 2001
model).

I'm concerned with this because I may be moving in the near future and I
would like to backup my important data and carry with me just the
notebook and some DVDs, but, of course, I would like to use a format
that works with the drives that I need.

I am curious to know if the current Apple laptops (or any other brands)
can cope with DVD+R/W media and DVD-RW media. So far, I have only
successfully used DVD-R with my iBook.

My ASUS DVD-ROM E608 drive suffers the same problems as the iBook's
drive.

In other words, I can only read my data with my burner, if I use
anything else than DVD-R (or CDs, but I am trying to get CDs out of the
game here).

So, any feedback regarding if current portables (say, the current
iBooks) can read the variety of DVD media used today would be quite
welcome.

Thanks for any comments, Rogério Brito.

Newest Firefox - Problems

2005-08-21 Thread Kenneth Jacker
[sarge; mozilla-firefox-1.0.4-2sarge2]

I've encounter some problems after the recent 'firefox' update ...

For example, entering C-b (or selecting View/Sidebar/Bookmarks via the
menus) causes 'firefox' to immediately exit. Same with C-h (history).

Other new weirdness: some of my extensions appear to be broken /
non-functional; clicking on the little blue circle with a white arrow
(Updates Available) also causes the application to terminate.

Anyone else seeing this? Solutions?

OK. I'm with you so far. Now that I seem to have boot logging working,
where is the actual output? Checking in /var/log didn't reveal anything.

According to man, the default output is /var/log/boot but I don't have
one.

From the bootlogd script, it seems that bootlogd is being started without
any options, so the default log file should be where it goes.

Man does say intriguingly:

Bootlogd tries to parse the kernel command line, looking for console=
lines and deducts the real console device from that. If that syntax is
ever changed by the kernel, or a console-type is used bootlogd does not
know about, bootlogd will not work.

Could that be what is happening?

I have the same problem with Bootlog. AFAIK its due to udev renaming the
console just as you described above. If you watch the very bootlog messages
you are trying to capture you should see an error saying something like
'bootlogd: ioctl (/dev/ttyzf, TIOCCONS): Bad file descriptor '. I have yet
to find a solution to this problem myself. This may not be your problem,
but at least it could save you some wasted time if it is :).

I see this same message. This is on a clean Debian 3.1 install with
2.6.8 kernel.

This is with the line in
/etc/default/bootlogd
set to =Yes
and bootlogd off in the rcx.d scripts

I can enable the service in the runlevel - which creates the bootlog
file - but it starts too late to produce a useful list of messages.

bootlogd configured itself as S20 in the boot scripts and stop_bootlogd
is S99. Is that what the issue is?

It works for me now with 2.6.12

Adam

I've scoured the Debian docs - FAQ, Install, User, Reference - and
failed to find a reference to the bootlog.

Where is this process documented? Particularly, the use of
/etc/default/bootlogd

Problem with inetd

2005-08-21 Thread Mrbizz4
I recently installed Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 on an HP Pavilion 310n. The problem
I'm having is that inetd is spawning the telnet service. When I scan the ports
on my computer, port 23 is actively listening for telnet connections. I have
tried many things in order to close this port. I have tried using
update-rc.d, etc. I have purged the telnet package, so I don't believe a
telnet connection is possible, but even after all of this the port remains
open! I have tried to edit inetd.conf. I have tried to comment out the telnet
service in /etc/services, but all that does is change the identity of the
service to "unknown", but anyone can tell it's telnet, because the specific
port 23 is open and the computer is actively listening. I know I'm not
running xinetd. I've looked at the how to on the Debian home page and tried
all of the suggestions on it. How can I remove the inet daemon?
 Your help is greatly appreciated!

 Mike

It's a Gentoo script for automated kernel generation from source

oldconfig" to produce the same effect.

Since the OP seems only to want to upgrade a pre-compiled binary
kernel, "apt-get install kernel-image-foo-bar" ought to work. It even
updates grub/lilo.

You became root by a simple "su"? So your root-user isn't allowed to
connect to your X-Server. That's not an debconf problem, but a general
one. Try to run any other x application (e.g. xcalc) and won't run,
too.

Use "sux" (that't an extra package) instead, or configure sudo to allow
your user to run dpkg-reconfigure, and everything should be fine.

I have a dual monitor G550 set-up and experienced the same problem. A
simple workaround for me was to switch to a virtual console (ie.
Ctrl-Alt-F1) and then back to X (Ctrl-Alt-F7) -- the second head 'turned

One NASTY fault with debian is, if it ain't free, it's not part of the
distro... For mozilla/firefox/epiphany etc you have to track down the
plugins and install them yourself... including the hugh java j2re_1.4.2
(whatever) and flashplayer, etc..If you dont' have broadband, good
luck.. This one issue alone is what makes debian based distro's like
mepis and ubuntu so appealing to a lot of people... They come with all
these plugins so it saves you a ton of time in post install system
tweeking... Of course they introduce you to a whole other set of
other issues but a lot of people seem to be able to live with them...

Okay, my .videogen is:

max_dotclk=68 # Monitors maximum dot rate.
max_hfreq=69; max_vfreq=120

videogen generate now this:

May I increase the max_dotclk slowly to get the 85 Hz vertical refresh

I once rescued a hard disk (the drive, not the data) bu doing
a low-level format from an option in the BIOS, I believe
(actually, I'm not quite sure after all these years-- it might
have been from a diagnostic floppy from the drive manufacturer).
It worked.

I've had a lot of fan-related problems. When a fan fails, things
overheat, have random problems, and, when it went on too long,
I lost an expensive video card and a motherboard. Have a look inside
the box; make sure the fans are turning fast, really making wind,
and not clogged with dust.

debconf

2005-08-21 Thread David R. Litwin
There recently on the mailing list was a query concerning different ways of viewing the results of debconf. The fellow wanted to know how to enable a Kde look (for lack of a better word). debconf offers a few different 'looks', kde, gnome and the default terminal-type thingy. I downloaded the necessary package to enable the kde look. I then ran dpkg-reconfigure debconf and chose kde. Well, as it turns out, I apparently didn't; it seems I chose gnome, for I then downloaded another package and it said it couldn't work for it was missing a package. I tried dpkg-reconfigure debconf (after downloading what I thought the package was) and here are the results:
# dpkg-reconfigure debconfXlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by serverXlib: No protocol specifieddpkg-reconfigure: cannot connect to X server :0And, with a normal user$ dpkg-reconfigure debconf
bash: dpkg-reconfigure: command not foundNow, methinks that the way to solve this is to enable my normal user to access dpkg-reconfigure so that I can, well, reconfigure debconf. How do I do this?Of course, if any one has a better suggestion (which I'm sure there is), I don't think that this plan is the best. So, please, suggest away!
Thank you kindly in advance.-- —A watched bread-crumb never boils.—My hover-craft is full of eels.—[...]and that's the he and the she of it.

Crypto will always perform better when optimized for the hardware.
Note, also, that some apps and libraries do CPU auto-sensing, so
that only one binary is needed.

xserver-xorg: - Matrox G550 Dualhead woes!

2005-08-21 Thread Adrian von Bidder
Yo!

Environment: Matrox G550 on xorg from unstable on a (mostly) sarge
installation. 2 analog screens. Xinerama is used, bare xorg - no mga_hal
etc.; kernel linux-image-2.6.12 or kernel-image-2.6.8 doesn't matter;
686-smp in both cases. DRM loads fine.

Symptom: booting, one display is text console. When X is started, it
starts fine on that display, but there's no signal on the other display -
thus it won't even come out of power save mode.

Starting X once with a single head xorg.conf solves the problem: The 'single
head' X delivers identical signal to both outputs of the graphics card
(even to the point where killing X or switcing back to text mode shows the
text mode on both screens). Changing xorg.conf back to the
dualhead/xinerama one, it starts fine on both displays.

[ please cc: me on replies ]

Detailed information:

xorg.conf (excerpts):

[Monitor sections are quite standard, but I'm specifying HorizSync and

detect them automatically.]

Sorry to hear that read-edid did not work for you.

Perhaps PC2000 is not the manufacturer. I seem to remember a monitor
certification called PC2000. (Googlingyes, here it is:
).

Other than that, I found:
,
,
,
Which may be close enough.

Also, if it is a 17" monitor (which I suspect it is), then you can't go
wrong with the settings:
Horz 35-60
Vert 55-90

These are VERY conservitive settings; you could probably go as high as
30-65,50-100 without worry.

Good Luck,
Kevin

If you have the 2.6 kernel installed then install 'udev' too since it

I rebooted into the old 2.2 kernel, and installed these from the sarge

After the reboot into sarge, everything worked, without my having to

I guess my only wonderment is why these utilities aren't installed by

Oh well... once they were installed, they did the trick.

Then to disable it (without uninstalling it), you can just read the
manual of "update-rc.d". That is the tool to customize boot time

monitor PC2000 F17 69T technical informations?

2005-08-21 Thread Csanyi Pal
Hello!

I have the monitor PC2000 F17 69T.
It was given to me yesterday, but without the manual.

I need the technical informations bellow to set up my X Window:

* the maximum dot rate (dot clock)
* line (Horizontal) frequency range
* raster (Vertical) frequency range

I search for this in the Google, but so far with no success.

Has anybody these informations? If so, please tell me! Thanks!

A quick google search gives me: http://www.alsa-project.org/

There is a button at the top of the page for bug submission. You have to
register for a free account to submit.

Do search their and outside bug and forums (mailing list archives included)
before you submit. Also, I would provide the snippet from the dmesg when the
sound card tries to load, just for good measure.

Hi. I had Debian Sarge running of my SATA HD and CDROM (Plextor 712-SA) on
2.4 before I needed to upgrade to 2.6 for webcam and Skype support (thank you
ALSA sound!)

Anyway, I don't think you'll have too much trouble...that is if your SATA
controller is supported. I am using an Intel i810 driver for mine, works
like a charm. If you haven't purchased your hardware yet, be sure to check
into this first.

Please note that there is one problem with a Debian 3.1 2.6 kernel install
from the install disc which is documented on the debian manual. Sometimes it
will start installing your OS up until it gets to CDROM recognition and than
fails to find it (even though you booted from it). To work around this use
the expert mode (type expert26 from boot:) and manually select the CDROM
drivers. Select just ide-generic, ide-cd, and isofs.

Only side effect is that your SATA CDROM might not work post-install until you
reconfig your kernel...but we know you were gonna do that anyway! =)

Hi David,

Are you sure the mirror/server(s) that you are downloading using apt-get has
that file on it? (/etc/apt/source.list)

I did a little recon on the Debian package lists (stable, testing, unstable,
and experimental) but could not find that file, or a replacement to it on any
of the lists. The oldstable listing has a 3.x one, but I don't think your
interested in that.

From here I searched my mirrors, other mirrors, and googled the file in search
of an HTTP or FTP server to download the file from (at this point I didn't
care if it was a .deb or not). It seems that almost everyone has removed
this package from their listings! If you use the cached page you can see
that it use to be there, but no longer. Mysql.org searching and surfing
gives similar results.

I apologize but the doc file has slipped through my fingers. MySQL maintains
(quite a nice) manual available from their website, perhaps you should
download that. You can download/view it as HTML or PDF, which is what I have
used in the past. I hope your using a box with a GUI =).

I would love to find out how somebody else managed to find this package, if
they did, for my education.

None. /etc/aliases forwards mail meant for some user on this computer
to some other address, while /etc/email-addresses is used to rewrite
the envelope from of messages sent bu a user.

Still no joy with the Kyro card.

2005-08-21 Thread Hendrik Boom
I'm still having no luck with my Hercules card.
I' trying to turn an old Windows machine into an X-terminal
kind of thing that can connect to one of the big, fast
machines I have around the house.

Unfortunately, it has a PCI Hercules Kyro card, which works
great under Windows, but only in text mode for Linux.

I'm starting to think my only alternative is to replace
the PCI Hercules card with some even more ancient
PCI graphics card, which I'm reluctant to do, because
its acceleration makes ancient Windows games at least a little
usable.

But it has always puzzled me why I can't even get it to
work in nonaccelerated frame-buffer mode with Linux...
One of the problems, of course, is that it's not an SVGA card,
or even a VGA card, but. so I have heard, and EGA card.
But Mandrake has managed to put a nice graphical image on
it during booting (although it never got X up either), so
I presume the necessary technical knowledge must exist somewhere!

The discussion has gotten this far last July.

Interesting. What's the relationship between this and
/etc/aliases ?

using unstable & experimental package on testing

2005-08-21 Thread Rakotomandimby Mihamina
Hi,

I bookmarked a link in the debian doc, but I lost it.

I run a Debian testing, but want to add 2 or 3 packages from unstable
and experimental.

As it is done with backports, is there a clean way to select just some
binary packages? I know I run into some dependencies problems, but I
dont want to entirely switch my distribution to unstable or experimental
just for one package I maintain.

Also, If you knew the technical term for what I want, that would help me
to search on Internet if I ever loose the bookmark again...

Thank you.

Do you have this mobo?
I see in the book that Power BIOS -> DIMM Voltage: +0.00 - +0.70 in
0.10V increments.

That would mean 0.1 in my case.

programming write to /var/run from /home

2005-08-21 Thread Hugo Vanwoerkom

Hi,

A programming question:

I want to have a program that runs in a user's /home dir. write to /var/run.

That can be done by running the program with sudo.

Is there any other way? E.g. programming with PAM? Example?

Thanks.

Re: boot with incorrect FSTAB info?

Hello all,

I just finished config'ing my new 2.6.8 kernel (debian, not vanilla) form 2.4
(both Sarge) and am ready to boot to it but due to my SATA hard drive I will
need to change my boot and /etc/fstab (from here on referred to as FSTAB)
entries from hd* to sd*. I have no problem doing it in grub but when it
comes to FSTAB I have some reluctance. Does anybody know a way for me to
recover and be able to boot into the system for me to fix the FSTAB file if,
for some reason, the system still won't boot?

This is my only computer system, and only Operating System, that I have over
here (living in Korea). So if I lose my system it will be a problem for me.
Would a rescue floppy/CD be an answer? Would the rescue mode of grub allow
me to get to a prompt to manually mount my partitons and than fix FSTAB?

Get the Knoppic CD.

You mess up fstab. The system is unbootable.

You boot from the Knoppix CD. Fix fstab. Done.

It's not very good information, except that you have what appear to be
hardware problems. What you said was insufficient to diagnose the defect
but you assigned blame anyway.

Who knows whether it is the CPU, the mobo or the memory, not a clue.

Thanks. I'll try that.
There is very little information to provide!
It is an Epox EP-8VTAI mobo and an XP 2700+ Thoroughbred CPU.

Install is painless except for the lm_sensors support for the Winbond
w83687thf but the lm_sensors people provided a patch and I am monitoring
now.

The failure is either a segfault in a compiler, usually gcc

(Everything runs Sarge. But it will happen in Sid also)

or a kernel panic someplace that may or may not show up on your display.
No trace anywhere else.

I have been running 2.6.11 for 2 days now without a hitch: run compiles etc.

It is definitely related to these 2 pieces of equipment because with the
same software (2.4.31 - 2.6.13 + Sarge or Sid) the old KT7A + Athlon
Thunderbird was rocksolid.

But where, there is the question. The segfaults provide no info and go
away again when you try it the next day.

The kernel panics point to a failure, but lead to a dead end because you
cannot repeat it.

A hardware info database for Linux would be nice, that is up to date.

Thanks again for the reply.

Mule client

2005-08-21 Thread Arash Bijanzadeh
Hi, I need a mule client for my Debian site, anybosy knows any thing?-- from debian manifesto:Debian Linux is a brand-new kind of Linux distribution. Rather than being developed by one isolated individua
l or group, as other distributions of Linux have been developed in the past, Debian is being developed openly in the spirit of Linux and GNU.
