You should install package zaptel-source, which contains sources for
the ztdummy driver. After that carefuly read man page for
module-assistant for how to correctly build modules for your kernel.

Asterisk PBX in Debian

2005-10-06 Thread Carlos Prieto
Hi everyone.

I've installed Asterisk PBX using apt packages, but i don't have actually any Digium card, so i want to use ztdummy.

I've tried to modify the Makefiles in the debian source package, i
don't get any error, but still the ztdummy module doesn't get compiled.

Does anybody has idea how to get the ztdummy module using the debian package system?

Thanks for your help.

Hi All!

Is it possible to make apt-get install not only the packages that the
package depends on but also suggested packages automatically as aptitude
does?

man apt-get, apt-conf didn't help...

set custom font in Emacs

2005-10-06 Thread Alexandru Cardaniuc
Hi All!

Before using Emacs on MS Windows XP I was able to choose my favourite
non-proportional font for Emacs to use inserting this in my ~/.emacs

;(set-default-font
; "-outline-Bitstream Vera Sans

After switching to Linux I am not able to do that anymore. When I insert
this line in ~/.emacs - Emacs gives an error on startup and starts with
the default font.

Moreover, when I press + to get the fonts -
I don't see Bitstream Vera Sans Mono there as an

When I run set-frame-font function - I get only the following options:

There is no Bitstream Vera Sans Mono among these Bitstream fonts.
Although I know that I have it on my system. I am able to choose it in
Gnome. In Desktop -> Preferences -> Font. I can choose that font there
as an application font and most applications will use it, but not Emacs.
So I guess somewhere I have to configure something.

Any help will be greatly appreciated...

you don't say either way, but don't use WinXX, go to Hibernate, then

The Windows XP machine is not going into hibernate, etc. Earlier this
evening I even tried doing some smaller test backups of just a few
hundred files that I know are not being changed by any other
application. Using the backup program built into Windows I made
backups of the same files 5 times in all. Twice there were 1-3 files
that did not verify (different files each time) and three times the
verify was sucessful.

I tried an older Linux machine I have as well (RH 8, 200MHz PII) and
the backups worked fine in each case.

I don't believe the drive can be easily swapped to a different machine
because of motherboard differences but I may add in a second spare
drive I have and see if there are still problems and/or just swap out
the present drive for a different one.

And BIOSTAR didn't mention the failed caps problem? Odd. Take a
look at the top of all those capacitors lined up in a row around the
cpu. Pay attention to any bulging of the tops, and to any leakage
onto the motherboard visible at the bases, it is probably an off
white color.

Either condition should be grounds to replace all of those
capacitors. We've salvaged several of their motherboards, and if you
have access to the right soldering tools, its not that difficult a
job. I think they got caught in the bad capacitors thing that got a
lot of Taiwanese makers about 4 years ago. Be sure and use high
quality, low esr rated parts.

First of all, I am new to tc and QOS as well, but I will try my best
to give a hand.
>From what little I understand, yours should work, but you might also
give this a try since you already seem to have all the required apps

Earlier this week, I started using tc to do shaping on my network.
I came across a great resource:
www.lartc.org
The article I am referencing is:
http://www.lartc.org/howto/lartc.cookbook.fullnat.intro.html

One of the main differences between this setup and yours is in the host's setup.
Instead of declaring a host for the server, it defaults all traffic to
the lowest class, and discriminately boosts the priority of certain
hosts, protocols, destinations, etc using iptables.

Here is a quick excerpt:
He recommends using 75% of your max bandwidth to prevent excess lag.

CEIL=75
tc qdisc add dev ippp0 root handle 1: htb default 12
tc class add dev ippp0 parent 1: classid 1:1 htb rate ${CEIL}kbit ceil

it allows the cpu to run hotter than it should be

your backups is also questionable ... since it could have been backing up
corrupt files

my silly question ... why can you move the 2 disks to a different
motherboard ( ycu can get um for free or up to $1000 or more for
motherboards depending on how pick you are about which motherboard )

if the lvm drives is somehow locked to the motherboard, that'd suck

hard drive access

2005-10-06 Thread Roberto C. Sanchez
This past Saturday my main workstation at home quit on me. Unfortunately this
happened while I was away for the day. When I arrived home the system was
beeping (a continuous cycle of 1 second beep followed by 4 seconds of silence).
Originally, I thought it was a failed power supply. Antec tech support
disagreed with me and referred me to the motherboard manufacturer (Biostar).
Their tech support said that the beep code indicated either a dead CPU or a
corrupted BIOS. After I explained that removing the RAM, CPU and video card
resulted in exactly the same beeping, the tech said he was reasonably certain
it was the BIOS. So, to make a long story short, they are sending me a new
BIOS chip to install.

However, there is no guarantee that the new BIOS will fix the problem, leaving
with the possibility of getting a new mother board. The problem I have is that
though my system performs regular backups (every morning @ 0200) to my file
server, there are some important things I did Saturday morning to which I need
access and if I end up needing a new motherboard, it could be anohter week or
two before it is back up and running. The real problem is that my system has
two hard drives in RAID1 (software) with LVM on top of that. The question is:
How do I safely access the data?

The LVM HOWTO has a recipe for moving a volume from one system to another, but I
can't perform the prep steps since my main system is not bootable.
Unfortunately, I don't have a spare motherboard laying around that I can use
either. I know that the RAID part is not so big a deal, since it will happily
rebuild a "dirty" part of the array. However, I am clueless as to how I might
get access to the LVM volumes.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you shut down on desktop 3, the session manager returns to desktop 3

Configuring apt-build.

2005-10-06 Thread Kumar Appaiah
Dear list,
I am trying to use apt-build to compile a few software for my
machine. The problem is that the configuration file at
/etc/apt/apt-build.conf seems to get ignored; for options from there
aren't used.

From the 'net, I have learnt and have used the following:

build-dir = /var/cache/apt-build/build
repository-dir = /var/cache/apt-build/repository
Olevel = -O2
mtune = -mtune=pentium4
march = -march=pentium4
options = " -msse2 -mmmx"
make_options = " -j2"

apt-build info gives me:
march: no such variable at /etc/apt/apt-build.conf line 5

Though the compile works, none of the above options work.

Yes, I have read the readme, which says that even though it doesn't
appear that way, actually, optimized compile happens. The author asks
us to look at `ps ax' as proof, but doing that shows only -mtune=i486
as the option.

Any pointers?

I had a similar occurrence a few years ago. In my case it wasn't the
hard drive (bad blocks tend to be more predictable, and bigger), nor
RAM, but a defective cpu (or motherboard, I don't remember which).

I know the hard drive and ram were okay because I'm using them still.
The cpu had issues in another system, but whether the cpu was a cause or
effect is not clear.

So, if you can, test your hard drive in another system (because it's
easiest to move). If it works you may be looking at the same kind of
problem I had.

> What makes Synaptic different from RPM in "concept"?

Like they said, it's the difference between .rpm's and .deb's, and the
package managers. They both contain the install location(s) and a list
of dependencies. The big difference is that apt-get, and friends, don't
simply throw up their hands when a dependency is missing -- they go get
it and install it. Usually -- and when they don't, it's cause for
massive whinage on the user lists until the prob is fixed.

Apt-get has been ported to several rpm distros, and does an outstanding
job installing rpm packages (and fetching dependencies). Apt's benes are
more in the package handling software than in the packages themselves.

> Can you manage any packages via RPM in Debian? I saw there was some

rpm itself is there, if you want to apt-get install it, and it will
unpack a package, check for dependencies, and install just fine. The
biggest problem you can run into using random rpm packages is that they
may (very often will) look for dependencies in the wrong places and/or
install things in the wrong places -- RedHat/Mandrake/SuSE places
instead of Debian places.

Checking Filesystems

2005-10-06 Thread Tim McDonough
I have a fairly new Debian 3.1 system running Samba that I use as a
home fileserver. The machine has a 30GB drive set up with / and swap
partitions.

Recently when running backups from Windows machines I've started
getting errors that say one or more files don't verify correctly. They
are not files that are in use at the time of the backup or verify and
if I perform multiple backups in a row different files will not
verify. On the last instance of this happening there were 3 files out
of several thousand that did not verify correctly.

This sounds as if there may be one or more bad blocks. What's the most
appropriate way to check and/or the filesystem?

Thanks for any pointers to utilities or articles.

Some of the replies you have gotten seem to miss the point of
"bare metal recovery"; which is to come back to your basic system
without out having to think about configuration. It presumes
that your "metal" is the same hardware configuation, more or
less per the particular recovery program. Accordingly the
satisfying ones derive the recovery system from the live
system; this puts the sysadmin in a comfortable environment.

I will recommend the Debian package "bootcd" to your attention,
this is rather like Yard but for cds or dvds, and more modern.
Summarily: bootcd lets you copy a bootable cd from your system,
it lets you exclude directories from the copy.

I have the practice of keeping a spare "rescue" root partition
on most machines. This is occasionally a great convenience.
For me this is just a Debian base install with a few extra
programs.

Grub is also to be recommended over lilo for recovery. Grub
allows a wider range of command decisions to be made at boot time.

rdev is slick but it doesn't offer redundant redundancy, so it
is more convenience than real data safety.

I use cpio to write all my backups. After you dig around to
find a 5.25 floppy drive, or some other old hardware, you do not
want to be trying to determine how to decipher some odd backup
format or look for a 8 year old version of an OS that will run
on current hardware and may run the appropriate restore program,
if you can find a copy of it.

Lastly, Preston's _Unix_Backup_&_Recovery_ seems to be the only
good treatment of the subject.

Be well,
rir

I didn't install any alsa-modules as I am running 2.6.12 kernel.

After I installed these packages i ran the command "alsaconf"; I first

"alsaconf" did.

Now my only problem is that (same as above) I have to rerun alsaconf

Above it was mentioned to install "discover". When attempting to do so

Check carefully: I know that Debian starts its "real users" at user id
500,501,502 ... . I'm not sure if Redhat uses the same numbering.

If you are not careful, you get "real users" under RedHat which are
"system/daemon users" under Debian or vice versa.
Type shadowconfig off on the RedHat box - that leaves you with
everything in /etc/passwd file. Migrate that. Edit as appropriate.

It might be worth adding the users under Debian anyway - if there
aren't too many - so that you get them in a sequence you want.

I copied across /home by (in /home)

tar -pcvf oldhome.tar ./*

then copying it to /tmp on the other box, changing to /home
and typing

tar -pxvf /tmp/oldhome.tar

Odd user and group id's can be resolved with a recursive ownership
change.

chown -R [user]:[group] [name of directory to change]

so (for example)

chown -R andycater:users andycater

Any odd groups / users will show up as unmatched numeric values when
you do a ls -al on /home in this scenario.

Then you just type

id [user]

to get their uid/gid on the new box and do the chown trick as above.

Andy

Windows? If it's working, we know that DHCP is working properly on the DSL
router, and it's correct that it should appear as the DNS IP.

OK, so that's the _internal_ address of the router.

You're not kidding. Siemens seems to have closed it's whole home networking
line. Are you sure of that model number? Are you sure it's wireless?
(Sorry, but one has to ask!)

Plug the system you're having trouble with into the router with an ethernet
cable, make sure you have a connection. Then do:

route
cat /etc/resolv.conf
cat /var/lib/dhcp*/*.leases

(for dhclient3 it's actually /var/lib/dhcp3/dhclient.leases, but it depends
which client you're using - that should get most of them).

Then try to connect wirelessly and do the same. Compare the results. They
should be exactly the same except for the metric & iface columns in the
"route" output, the actual IP issued in the lease, and the interface the
lease is for.

If you don't get an IP at all wirelessly, then try: "dhclient ath0" (or
whatever the wireless iface is) and report back.

Amusing pdf print puzzle

2005-10-06 Thread Thomas H. George
From a website I selected a financial document which Mozilla opened
with xpdf. The screen display was perfect but it could not be printed,
that is, the file was apparently sent to the printer but nothing
happened. Using lynx localhost:631 Manage Jobs I found the job listed
as completed but aborted. Upon restart Cups reported
client-error-not-possible.

Next I asked xpdf to print to a file and found it created two documents:
a.pdf and a.ps. gv failed to open the a.ps file although it could open
the Cups testprint.ps file with no trouble and the printer had no
trouble printing it. I tried OpenOffice which could open both a.pdf and
a.ps but as raw files - i.e. showing all the postscript formating
instructions as well as the text content. Somewhere in the process the
a.pdf file was deleted.

Next, from plugindoc.mozdev.org, I found and downloaded and installed
the Adobe plugin. I went back to the website and again selected the
document. Now Mozilla opened it as a blank page. After I deleted the
new plugin, restarted Mozilla, went back to the website and selected the
financial document Mozilla again would open it with xpdf but it still
could not be printed.

Finally I used acroread (which had been installed as part of the
installation of the plugin) to open and print a.pdf which it did with no
difficulty.

Summary:

xpdf can open the document for screen display and write it to a
file but gv cannot read the file.

The Adobe plugin cannot properly display the document (blank
screen) but acroread can open the pdf file created by xpdf, display it
and send it in approriate form for printing.

All this may be stale news but I am reporting it as it was new to me and
it took me some time to find a way to print a document I needed and
could display on the screen.

As already stated, you really mean to ask what makes .deb packages different
from .rpm?

A very important difference is that .deb packages comply with Debian policy for
placement
of files on disk ("a place for everything and everything in its place"). Look
for the
document of Hierarchical File Structure on the Debian web site. Alien trys to
make some
corrections but can't really handle all cases of muddle headedness that occur
in .rpm
packages.

SetGID bit on directories

2005-10-06 Thread C. Chad Wallace

Hello,

We have a directory on an NFS mount that we want to be writable by members of a specific group,
"pubcorpwrite". So I did "chgrp pubcorpwrite" on the directory and all files
and directories within it, and set the setgid bit on the directory and all its subdirectories
because I thought this would force all files and directories created within to maintain that group.

To quote "info coreutils":
 2. set the process's effective group ID to that of the file upon
execution (called the "setgid bit"). For directories on some
systems, put files created in the directory into the same group as
the directory, no matter what group the user who creates them is
in.

Anyhow, someone just recently created a file there, and it was created with his primary group, instead of "pubcorpwrite".

The quote above says it only works "on some systems..." Is Debian one such
system? If not, is there any way with NFS to get all files created in this directory to
be in a certain group? I know this could be done with Samba... but we're not currently
using Samba.

Thanks!

The package management system (apt* and dpkg) are better at handling
dependencies than *some* (read most) other distributions' correspnding
tools.

alien converts other package formats, including RPMs, to
debs. However, it is recommended that you consider it a last resort,
and stick to reliable debs.

Can you manage any packages via RPM in Debian? I saw there was some

There's "alien", but you shouldn't need it, and I wouldn't recommend
you use it on any critical packages you're going to need to install.
I'd be surprised if there wasn't a .deb file of an RPM already in

existance, for most packages.

It should also be noted that alien converts the RPM package to a .deb
package that can be installed with dpkg, and therefore be managed by the
package system. You can install packages directly via rpm sometimes but
I wouldn't recommend it, since they will not be registered with the
debian package system.

I know the following places to play with:

- BIOS settings for "PnP OS installed": enable or disable

- Kernel load parameters: acpi_irq_balance, acpi_irq_nobalance, pci=
{usepirqmask, routeirq, etc}... See your
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt

- Driver initialization and load order. Unfortunately, a good text

Synaptic Package Manager vs. RPM

2005-10-06 Thread Jeremy Merritt
I started using Debian in the past 2 months after using another Linux distro for a long time. The other distro relies on RPM for its package management, with the consequence of the user having to go through "dependency hell" on a regular basis. I have been amazed at the size of the Synaptic Package repository and how seamless it integrates with Debian. Also, I have noticed that some other distros, presumably built on Debian technology, use the same, or a similar, system for package management.

Re: drm and radeon module load problems

2005-10-06 Thread Lubos Vrbka

Yes. It is really weird, that you had it in the .config but there was
absolutely nothing about the agp in the dmesg!?

From your trials it seems that the module gets laoded and your chipset
is supported by the kernel, so everything should be ok from the AGP
point of view. Also I think it means that agp_try_unsupported=1 would
not help in your case.
as i wrote before, i already built new kernel with iommu enabled and agp
included in the kernel. as soon as it will be possible to reboot i'll
check it out...

If you have the IOMMU or the AGP support compiled in the kernel, you
should get an error if you try to force modprobe to load the agp module.

My grep -i agp /usr/src/linux/.config has
CONFIG_AGP=y
CONFIG_AGP_AMD64=y
# CONFIG_AGP_INTEL is not set
and grep -i iommu /usr/src/linux/.config
# CONFIG_GART_IOMMU is not set

CONFIG_DUMMY_IOMMU=y

I.e. no IOMMU and AGP compiled into the kernel.
dmesg |grep -i agp gives:
Linux agpgart interface v0.101 (c) Dave Jones
agpgart: Detected AGP bridge 0
agpgart: AGP aperture is 256M @ 0xd000

with module i've something similar.

When I start X, the drm and, in my case, mga get loaded automatically.
in my case, fglrx, amd64_agp and agpgart get loaded automatically. no
drm is present there... actually, should it be there? for some
mysterious reason, the hw acceleration works now (and it was the reason
why i started playing with the kernel...)

Just a follow up if anybody out there is pondering my question. I can see
these terrabyte arrays in MS-DOS, OS/2 Warp 4, Red Hat, Win 95, Win 2000 and
Win XP.

Why can't I see them with Debian? I feel that I must be doing something

What is 192.168.2.1?  This is what people have been talking about, re: you

192.168.2.1 is the "Router IP Address". This is from the advanced page from http://mynetwork, some thing the Bell installation C. D. created.

What on earth is it?  Did you forget to mention the little detail that thisis how you're configuring your wireless router, or do you not even _have_ awireless router? This is from
Configure the Local Home Networking modem IP Network from Advanced Settings from Advanced from http://mynetwork. I have got a wireless router, which also doubles as a modem to the "central computer".
I don't see anything in this long thread that even suggests you've tried to
make this connection through the ethernet connection on your wirelessrouter, which should be the first thing you try.Certainly I have (and I'm fairly sure I did mention it; but it matters not, yes?).  Before I had even gotten the driver for the wireless, I used an Ethernet Cable directly to the Router / Modem. This worked with normalcy (id est, every thing was coming in at the normal speed).
Before we try anything else tell us:A) Make & Model of your DSL modem
Siemens SpeedStream 6525 Router / Modem. This is not some thing one can buy; it came as a gift from Sympatico.
B) Make & Model of your Wireless routerIbid. C) How does B connect to A (if they're not a single unit)
The Modem and Router are indeed a single unit. D) What happens when you plug into your DSL modem
Every thing works at the normal speed. There is no internet problem.
E) What happens when you plug into your wireless router (if A & B aren't asingle unit)Ibid. I certainly hope that this can clear up some of the confusion. It is rather diff cult to describe all of this with out being able to show you precisely what the whole shebang looks like. My apologies if it is still incomprehensible: I encourage questions which can clarify!
Thank you kindly, as always.-- —A watched bread-crumb never boils.—My hover-craft is full of eels.—[...]and that's the he and the she of it.

OK, the search statements mean nothing. It's bogus, but all that does is
append a domain name if you try to use an unqualified host name. IF you
have more than one machine on your home network, you might actually want
that to say something else, otherwise it doesn't matter.

What is 192.168.2.1? This is what people have been talking about, re: you
running your own DNS. According to your system, this is the only DNS
server it talks to. It's not one of Bell's servers, which are most likely:

dns1.sympatico.ca. 1800IN A 204.101.251.1
dns2.sympatico.ca. 1800IN A 204.101.251.2
ns5.bellnexxia.net. 3600IN A 209.226.175.236
ns6.bellnexxia.net. 3600IN A 209.226.175.237

192.168.2.1 _looks_ like a cable or wireless router. If it was your DSL
modem, you would be working, so it isn't. :-)

I did get that in HTML form, but once is enough :-)

What on earth is it? Did you forget to mention the little detail that this
is how you're configuring your wireless router, or do you not even _have_ a
wireless router?

I don't see anything in this long thread that even suggests you've tried to
make this connection through the ethernet connection on your wireless
router, which should be the first thing you try.

Before we try anything else tell us:

A) Make & Model of your DSL modem
B) Make & Model of your Wireless router
C) How does B connect to A (if they're not a single unit)
D) What happens when you plug into your DSL modem
E) What happens when you plug into your wireless router (if A & B aren't a
single unit)

Maybe a new distribution should be created: Ubuntian. Or Debuntu,
whichever sounds better :)

Sorry about the delay in my reply :( My ISP did something with the

If you have the IOMMU or the AGP support compiled in the kernel, you
should get an error if you try to force modprobe to load the agp module.

My grep -i agp /usr/src/linux/.config has
CONFIG_AGP=y
CONFIG_AGP_AMD64=y
# CONFIG_AGP_INTEL is not set
and grep -i iommu /usr/src/linux/.config
# CONFIG_GART_IOMMU is not set
CONFIG_DUMMY_IOMMU=y

I.e. no IOMMU and AGP compiled into the kernel.
dmesg |grep -i agp gives:
Linux agpgart interface v0.101 (c) Dave Jones
agpgart: Detected AGP bridge 0
agpgart: AGP aperture is 256M @ 0xd000

256M is the size of the aperture (from the BIOS settings)

When I start X, the drm and, in my case, mga get loaded automatically.

I don't know. Probably because you can install both using 2.4 and 2.6
and because there were some problems using 2.6 and the psmouse module
not being loaded. Adding psmouse to /etc/modules probably seemed to be
the easiest way.

Honestly I don't know what the problem is. You should check the dmesg
output befor and after restarting gdm.

I have a PS/2 mouse, but it's connected via a switch (two computers
share mouse, keyborad and screen).

If the psmouse-module is compiled into the kernel, why then does it look
for it as a module on boot?

Now I handle the problem this way:

After boot, when gdm has started and the mouse-pointer is frozen in the
middle of the screen, I swtich to a console and do this as root:
# /etc/init.d/gpm stop
# /etc/init.d/gdm stop
# /etc/init.d/gpm start
# /etc/init.d/gdm start

then the mouse has come alive!

All the 2.4 kernels have the psmouse driver compiled into the kernel,
not as an external module. That is why the module is not there and

Debian ISO images of etch (testing)

Hello,

I saw in the debian pages that each week a testing ISO

I find that at the page:

http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/cdimage-testing/cd/jigdo-area/i386/

This image is a sarge image, not a etch image. Where
can I find the etch images?

Thank you

I use a stock-kernel (2.4.27-386)

/lib/modules/2.4.27-386/kernel/drivers/input/ does not contain a dir
called mouse, only 6 object-files: *.o (evdev, input, joydev, keybdev,
mousedev, uinput)

But if i don't rebuild the kernel, will it then help to reinstall the
kernel-image? That is, is the part 'sourced' under boot?
