PyKota is not known to apt because it isn't part of Debian.

You can purchase Debian packages for PyKota for a small fee on a yearly
subscription basis, or through Support Contracts from the author's
website (see http://www.librelogiciel.com/software/PyKota/Pricing)

Other people may also create Debian packages for PyKota and make them
available freely or upload them to Debian, but I think nobody did
recently. Also if you purchase a subscription you can redistribute the
packages you'll download, but again I think nobody does...

In any case, the license is the GNU GPL. I just ask that if you
redistribute an Official PyKota package in a modified form, you don't
label it as being "Official".

Why is it if I send mail via Emacs through the sendmail device it goes

Secondly why do the messages from the Evolution and Linux mailing lists
arrive in the Evolution inbox and are rarely delivered to the Emacs

Well, this is rather foggy. All of this can be checked. If you don't see
any action beforehand from any mailserver you send a mail from (gmail in
this example), you know the setup you chose isn't the issue.

Now, dns is a bit more tricky. There are multiple sites that can preform
a check if you have setup your mailserver the "right" way, and if it
respons is sane.

Delay in receiving emails

2005-12-05 Thread axolx

Fellow debian users--

I recently setup a box to act as a mail (qmail) and DNS (bind9) server.
Because I only have one external IP address, this machine is accesible
through a main server by means of forwarded ports using iptables. For
example, if you telnet into port 25 of my main server, you are actually
opening a connection on the mail and dns server.

My question is that I notice that it often takes long (15min +) to
receive certain emails, and I cannot figure out why. If I send myself an
email (from an external network) by a telnet SMTP session on my main
server, the email appears right away. However, if I send an email to the
same address using Gmail (I replicated the problem in other
clients, but it happen more often with emails sent from Gmail), then it
takes a while to show up. This leads me to think that it may be a
DNS rather than mail problem, but I am not sure.

I'd appreciate any hints or solutions and would very happily follow up
with anyone who is willing to help..

The server OS is 2003.
I should be able to make a ssh-session and locale console login with
just the Windows Domain user name.
At least, that was possible with my old setup.
I did not even have to change /etc/pam.d/ssh, since it includes
common-auth, common-account and common-session.
I don't have an X-Server installed.

My smb.conf looks like this:
---
[global]
netbios name = bilinux2
#workgroup = WICRESOFT
realm = WICRESOFT.COM
security = ads
password server = ws-dc-01 ws-dc-02
encrypt passwords = yes
windind use default domain = yes

winbind separator = \\
idmap uid = 1000-2000
idmap gid = 1000-2000
winbind enum users = yes
winbind enum groups = yes
template homedir = home/winnt/%U
template shell = /bin/bash

[public]
path = /var/winnt
writeable = yes
locking = no
---
testparm complains, since it does not recognize the '\\' escaping, but
the last time I figured out, that shared folder only work with this
seperator.
I guess the configuration should be ok, since 'wbinfo -u' works.

/etc/nsswitch.conf looks like this:
---
passwd: compat winbind
group: compat winbind
shadow: compat winbind

hosts: files dns wins
networks: files dns

protocols: db files
services: db files
ethers: db files
rpc:db files

netgroup: nis

Andy, are you using testing or unstable right?

From messages Ed has sent he appears to be using stable, so unless he
uses packages from another branch he cannot use madwifi-dev,
madwifi-source and madwifi-tools.

I have a dwl-g510 too and to make it works I have had to install madwifi
from tarball sources.

You can get it from http://snapshots.madwifi.org/

Updates from tux.org fail

following message:

When I comment out the tux.org line from my sources.list, updates work
normally, although obviously without updating any java packages.

What is causing this?

file not found - hardware, fs, or driver problem?

2005-12-05 Thread Richard Lyons
I've been away from this list for a while, so: hello everybody. It's
nice to be back.

I've installed sarge on a new box but i am getting strange 'file not
found' errors. Not sure whether to suspect hardware or hardware
drivers. Or something else.

The setup is:
   cpu: AMD64 Athlon 3200+
mb: Asrock 939NF4
   mem: 2GB DDR400 PC3200
hdd: 200GB SATA Maxtor 6L200M0 - which is recognised as /dev/sda
   opt: 16x Sony DW-Q30 DVD-RW
   vid: Nvidia 6600GT 256MB PCI-E

There is also an old ethernet PCI card and an old SoundBlaster Live PCI
Card, recycled from another box, as the onboard audio controller,
ethernet port and modem, all NVidia MCP51 AC97 are invisible to Debian.

The install went reasonably smoothly, once I had chanced on a hdd driver
that loaded (It was not any of the drivers called 'SATA_xxx' to my
surprise). The nv driver works the video card adequately, though I
believe I should undertake what looks like a rather complex process to
install a better proprietary driver. (I previously tried and failed to
install an ATI X700, but that is another story.)

The problem is that installed software sometimes refuses to run, giving
'file not found', in spite of the fact that the file in question will ls
normally, permissions are ok, etc, and I can even cat the file. This
happens only with certain files, for example two separate attempts to
install qcad professional. Other software, loaded via normal Debian
routes, runs apparently normally.

Any suggestions to how to proceed?

TIA

I've installed the 2.6 kernel in sarge, then (after reinstalling my
nvidia drivers) did "m-a auto-install wacom" to install the wacom
module, then rebooted. Now, instead of acting properly as a USB mouse,
when I move the pen close to the tablet the cursor jitters wildly up
and down. "xsetwacom list dev" still yields no results. The tablet
still works properly as a regular USB mouse in 2.4.

3rd party Madwifi packages for Debian Sarge won't build

2005-12-05 Thread Ed Young
I'm trying to install madwifi to get my dwl-g510 wifi card working.
Atheros chipset.

I can't find madwifi packages when searching the stable branch, so I
downloaded the file madwifi-source_20041023-1_all.deb from
http://madwifi.sf.net

This package won't install because of dependency problems (see below)
Is there a way to resolve this correctly, or are there other packages
that won't error out when installing?

Please advise. Thanks.

hi there,

this is a strange one and i can't seem to find an answer through google

when i view the contents of / i see that root's directory is not present
with the exception of a file "root":

i can not chmod, chgrp, or chown this "root" file; i get the "Operation

when i try to mkdir root i get :
mkdir: can not create directory 'root': File exsists

the "root" file seems to be the binary form of the missing root's

does anyone know what the problem is?
has anyone experienced this problem?
what can i do to fix this?

thanks for the help

Try iftop. It doesn't upload/download anything: you'd have to start that
apart. It continuously shows, top-like, the upstream and downstream speeds of
each TCP connection.

I hope this is more or less what you're looking for

I wish it worked that way, but it needs to be "apt-get --purge remove ..."
since purge isn't provided as a command to apt-get. I guess aptitude does
provide the purge command, but I'm otherwise happy sticking with apt-get.

Problems installing multiple Adaptec RAID controllers with Debian 3.1

2005-12-05 Thread Lucas Barbuto

Hi List,

I've got this friend who's got this problem, I'll make it as short as I can.

I've installed Debian 3.1 onto a SCSI RAID5 provided by an Adaptec
AIC-7899. The system boots and runs fine. I'm able to access the array
via the I2O subsystem.

To increase my storage capacity for a cheaper price, I'm trying to add a
SATA RAID5 via an Adaptec 2410SA. After a few headaches with BIOS
configuration, the system will boot with the 2410SA installed alongside
the AIC-7899. So here's the problem:

With the stock 2.6 kernel that came with Sarge (2.6.8-1-386) I'm able to
see the SATA RAID array with the aacraid driver:

Nov 8 19:18:41 venus kernel: AAC0: kernel 4.2.4 build 7348
Nov 8 19:18:41 venus kernel: AAC0: monitor 4.2.4 build 7348

channel 0, id 0, lun 0

Looks good, but fdisk doesn't like it

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo fdisk /dev/sdb

Unable to open /dev/sdb

And no amount of fiddling seems to help. A post on my local Linux users
group suggested I try a newer kernel. So I did. I tried installing a
2.6.14 kernel with kernel-package, which went quite smoothly, until I
tried to boot. The system now hangs at this stage

Skipping already loaded module dpt_i20.

(That may not be exactly correct, I had to manually copy it down off the
screen in a hurry) I can't review any more of the boot messages. Not
really understanding how ACPI works and what it can do/break, I tried
disabling it from the GRUB command line with pci=noacpi and then with
acpi=off. Both times the system hung at the same spot with (from memory)
the same error.

OK, can anybody suggest where I might go from here? Does anyone have
experience with this hardware combination (i.e. is it possible to put an
AIC-7899 and an 2410SA in the same Debian system and get them to work)?
Any pointers would be great.

Regards,

Default is ext3, I think. You can check with 'mount'. I have:

Ahh, thanks. Running ext3

You can see that / and /srv are ext3 and /var and /home are xfs. I
chose xfs for these because they contain directories with a lot of
files (the already mentioned Maildirs and a news spool). So far, I had
no problems with xfs.

I'll see how I go with ext3 for now, but I'll keep that in mind.

2005-12-05 Thread Ed Young
David, thanks for the pointers, but I'm still not there yet. I
followed the instructions in the link you sent me and it's helping,
but not solving yet.

I installed the wireless-tools, ndiswrapper-utils, and
ndiswrapper-modules-2.6.8-2-686 for my kernel (the stock 2.6.8-2-686
one I'm running)

Then did this:

Parse error in inf. Unable to find section W8100PCI.zerocfg
Parse error in inf. Unable to find section W8100PCI.zerocfg
falcon:/home/ed#

What's up with the errors? Anyone know?

3.
 falcon:/home/ed# ndiswrapper -l
Installed ndis drivers:
mrv8k51 driver present
falcon:/home/ed#

4.
insmod /lib/modules/`uname -r`/misc/ndiswrapper.ko

Now I still have no wlan entry in dmesg and iwconfig yeilds nothing but
falcon:/home/ed# iwconfig

eth0 no wireless extensions.
sit0 no wireless extensions.

Hmmm, any ideas?

Did this this morning :) apt-get install madwifi-dev madwifi-source
madwifi-tools module-assistant and one of linux-headers / kernel-headers

Use module-assistant to build the madwifi kernel-modules

modprobe ath-pci

modprobe ath-hal

Then reboot and enjoy :)

Re: WIFI Card DWL-G510 (Atheros chipset) installation problems

2005-12-05 Thread David Castor
Ed,

I'm basically a rank amateur at this, so not sure how much help I can
offer.  The wiki guide did mention that some cards require more
than one file.  Also, the .inf driver file might have to be
unzipped.   I'd double check the driver files to see if you
can get rid of that error first.

Maybe someone who has more experience can help.   There is a
troubleshooting guide in the wiki.  There is also a specific
ndiswrapper mailing list:

Good luck and let me know how you get on - I'm going to be playing with my configuration more tonight. On 12/5/05, Ed Young <

In our case there are a couple of dozens of sysadmins that
want to have root access on their local box and six or eight
sysadmins that do the operation of these workstations
(and some 200 servers in their spare time). The latter six or
eight people have the root password to do remote stuff.

As mentioned before, they could work with sudo and service
accounts for login too. But we do not do it that way.

Six or eight people with the root password makes a good
reason to update it regularly.

WIFI Card DWL-G510 (Atheros chipset) installation problems

I need some help getting this wifi card working under Linux. I have it
working ok under Windows.

Unknown device 001a (rev 01)

I believe I need to use ndiswrapper to get this card working. It's
listed as supported in the wiki, but I'm having trouble figuring it
all out.

Do I need to build the ndiwrapper module and install it and tell it to
use the windows driver (XP)?

What are the steps or is there a reference I can use?

Thanks,

kernel reboot failing with MODPROBE error

2005-12-05 Thread Ed Young
First of all, is there a good Debian kernel building howto?

When rebooting with a new kernel I get an error something like
kernel panic MODPROBE /lib/module/2.6.8/modules.dep no such file or directory.
This file exists the the above directory.

I installed the debian package kernel-source-2.6.8 and bunzip'd and
untarred the package. I set the sym link linux to point to the source
dir.

I built the kernel like this
make menuconfig without selecting anything other than the default.
make clean, make bzImage, make modules, make modules_install.

I have two modules directories:
The new one for the kernel source:
  drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2005-12-05 10:14 2.6.8
The one from the kernel supplied by the distribution:
  drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 2005-12-04 19:06 2.6.8-2-686

I fixed up grub menu.1st so the new kernel was selectable.

When I reboot I get the kernel panic message above.

What am I doing wrong and where can I look for a howto on correct
debian kernel building technique?

Thanks and please advise,

Ed

SMP kernel - modem support

2005-12-05 Thread jb701
I have a dual processor system running sarge with an SMP kernel. It cannot
find my modem.

When I run the system with a uniprocessor kernel, the modem works fine.

The SMP kernel I am using is 2.6.8-2-686-smp.

What I would like to know is: does this mean I need to compile a kernel with
modem support [if that makes sense] or are SMP kernels inherently unable to
work with modems?

Or, if this is not the right place to ask these questions, where should I
try?

before re-installing debian recently.

when running
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

I select either via or s3 and then all resolutions from 1280x102 on down.

I can provide any info to help diagnose things.

Thanks and Please advise,

ext3 & bad blocks error

2005-12-05 Thread Patrick Mulder
Hi,

my power supply switched off suddenly last week while
I was doing some update of system files last week.
Since then, I am not able to boot the 2.6.13.4 kernel
(with udev support) anymore, more specifically, my
/home parition cannot be mounted and booting stops
with the message:

"fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to
open /dev/hda6: The superblock could not be read or
does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the
device is not valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem, then the superblock is corrupt, and you
might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock.
fsck failed. Please repair manually."

No I have tried fsck -c /dev/hda6 but this device
cannot be found, although it is correctly in the
/proc/partitions:

major minor #blocks name

   3 0 39082680 hda
   3 16835626 hda1
   3 2 1 hda2
   3 5 771088 hda5
   3 6 31471303 hda6

After doing a manual mknod /dev/hda6 b 3 6 I can run
fsck, but the report does not show bad block or
missing inodes. Neither does the report for the /root
partition.

Mounting the /home from the linux 2.4.24.x kernel
(with static devfs) works flawless, as does the boot
from the live cd. Continuing booting with 2.6.13.4
times out after a while with some error messages on
init.d/rcS script not correct.

Does anyone see what is happening here ? Or, do I need
to reformat my whole harddisk ?

Thank you very much for your help.

Patrick

If your mail goes though procmail at some point, you could rewrite the
headers with a procmail rule and formail. That would let you mudge the
reply-to without anyone knowing, and flaming about it.

How, pray, do I ascertain whether my mail goes through the

I have Thunderbird set to use POP to pull and SMTP to push

always do something like this:

If you have a transparent proxy, why does the dns have to be fake?

By definition a transparent proxy intercepts all requests, without the
user knowing, reagardless of their destination...

mounting /tmp as executable or not?

2005-12-05 Thread Bernd Prager
I was wondering if there's some security or other benefits in mounting
/tmp with a "noexec" option. Even if scripts there can still be executed
but - binary programs should not, right? At least something, I thought.
When I was checking it out, unfortunately some apt-get updates started
failing, like:

Preconfiguring packages ...
Can't exec "/tmp/cvs.config.56471": Permission denied at
/usr/share/perl/5.8/IPC/Open3.pm line 168.
open2: exec of /tmp/cvs.config.56471 configure 1:1.12.9-16 failed at
/usr/share/perl5/Debconf/ConfModule.pm line 44
cvs failed to preconfigure, with exit status 2

So now I just think it's wasted energy and tend to reverse that "noexec"
flag to "standard" again.

Any suggestions or experiences?
Thanks,

Works fine with just my single computer and printer at home.

Look at the printer database at

chances are to get your printers funcioning under Linux, if you
haven't yet.

Also, that same site has a recent tutorial on cups that may help.

Look at the Debian package page for hlip at
http://packages.debian.org/hplip. It will tell you that Debian stable
has version 0.9.2, testing has 0.9.3 and unstable has 0.9.7. So I
guess you are running stable, which is confirmed by your sources.list.
For a server this is almost always the best option.

Well, it appears something is wrong with my rsync'ing /cygdrive/d. I am
not able to rsync and backup /cygdrive/d/user1 directory at all! The
rsync process just hangs. Rsync works on other directories in
/cygdrive/c and / but not on /cygdrive/d/.

Here is what I have on the Windows XP box running Cygwin:
$ mount
C:\cygwin\bin on /usr/bin type system (binmode)
C:\cygwin\lib on /usr/lib type system (binmode)
C:\cygwin on / type system (binmode)
c: on /cygdrive/c type system (binmode,noumount)
d: on /cygdrive/d type system (binmode,noumount)
e: on /cygdrive/e type system (binmode,noumount)

Any comments?

[Cygwin <-> Debian]: rysnc hangs when backing up multiple /cygdrive/* dirs

2005-12-05 Thread H.S.
Hi,

I am not able to see what could be going wrong with my rsync method. I
am trying to back up a Windows XP box (running Cygwin and sshd and
rsyncd) from my Debian Testing box. The following command hangs before
really transfering any files:

rsync -R --delete --delete-excluded --modify-window=1 --ignore-errors
-zauve ssh --exclude-from=rsync-excludes.txt
'ice:/cygdrive/c/Documents?and?Settings /cygdrive/d/user1 /home /etc'
/mnt/snapshot/ice/windows/daily.0

but the following command works:

rsync -R --delete --delete-excluded --modify-window=1 --ignore-errors
-zauve ssh --exclude-from=rsync-excludes.txt
'ice:/cygdrive/c/Documents?and?Settings /home /etc'
/mnt/snapshot/ice/windows/daily.0

I notice that if I specify multiple source /cygdrive/* dirs to be backed
up, rsync hangs (first case above), otherwise it is happy (second case
above).

Can anybody see what could be the problem? Or, how do you backup
multiple dirs from a cygwin box, if you this kind of thing at all? I
just hope I have specified the source directories correctly in the
commands above.

Again, this points to an inaccessable CUPS (that implements the Internet
Printing Protocol) on the localhost network interface (127.0.0.1). Either
this is not present (must be) or

CUPS does not listen on localhost (also a must) or

a firewall causes this (does not really make sense on localhost) or

there exists not CUPS printer entry with the name "printers" (that most likely
your problem because this sounds like a strange naming)

Those are only there because of the failure. Again, check "netstat -lp" or
"netstat -lnp" and make sure that CUPS listens on localhost.
You can also check by opening
 http://localhost:631/printers
yourself.

Normally, problems like this a straight-forward to solve with some common
sense (example here: thinking about the URL from the error message above).

I switched from Origin to gnuplot and never regretted it. It's a bit
difficult to learn at the beginning, but IMHO much more powerful in the
end. Another advantage is that it is easy to semi-automate repetitive
data analysis and include useful tricks from the command line. If you
save your gnuplot file it's easy to track down (and archive) how the
data were treated exactly.

Of course having a proprietary file format, Origin should never be used
for scientific applications (where you want to archive your data and
analysis).

xmgrace is gui like Origin, ie. faster to learn, but in the end probably
not as good at archiving and/or automating your evaluations.

Just a slight suggestion, you might want to avoid the word
copy, even if it is legal in your situation. The word backup
is more proper, as some people might respond to backup,
rather than copy.

You also might want to read up on the dvd backup process,
most of the time it involves ripping out the vob's off the
disk. Once you have the vobs, you should be able to do
whatever you need to them. Even if you make a bit copy of a
dvd, depending on the dvd, and the drm it might not work.
After all it copied all the drm over, and is bitwise correct
of the original which might or might not want you to watch
the dvd on your computer.

For a good source of the process you might want to check out
one of the guides available on the net, at such places as
doom9, others.

Once you have the vobs you should be able to play them on
any media, such as mplayer, and xine. Now making them play
on your stand alone dvd player is another subject.

That's strange did you search google with marillat in the
search term?

Also as noted above in this thread, you don't need mplayer to
play dvd's just the special *css which can be found with the
common search terms.

I personally like the way Ubuntu does it, they have a big
readme, and a script which downloads the codecc rather nice
I think. You don't even have to change the source list file.
Then again finding mplayer I really had no problems with adding the proper line
to my source list file and using apt-get to get the proper files.

Now getting my system to play .ts files in another thing, I
just home that someone works out a better method of
playback. Or it forces me to upgrade my dual 1.2 mp's to
something that can handle those files.

sarge security upgrade wedged on smsclient

2005-12-05 Thread Hendrik Boom
I've had various problems with this upgrade in the last few days,
all having to do with smsclient. Yesterday I tried again, using script to
make a log so that I could report the exact messages that occurred.

As usual, I used aptitude interactuively to do the routine security updates.
I typed
u
and it downloaded the new lists of packages, as usual.
U
and it told me how much disk space would be involved, as usual. I have lots.
I typed
g
and I got a list of things to be done to packages, as usual.
I typed another
g
to start the updates. But now it's not business as usual.
Instead of acomplishing anything, I get the messages

> Apt errors
> E: I wasn't able to locate file for the smsclient package. This might mean
>you need to manually fix this package.
> E: Internal error: couldn't generate list of packages to download

Aptitude stops at this point. Just in case it's still busy but looking inactive
(I have a slow machine), I let it go on for four hours and nothing else happens.

Trying to remove it by hand (because in the last few days it had been listed
as a package to be removed because nothing depended on it, I get

> topoi:/home2/hendrik# apt-get remove smsclient
> Reading Package Lists... Done
> Building Dependency Tree... Done
> E: The package smsclient needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive
> for it.
> topoi:/home2/hendrik#

Trying to install it by hand (because in the last few days it has once mentioned
to me that the package is so broken that I'll have to install it before I can
remove it gives

> topoi:/home2/hendrik# apt-get install smsclient
> Reading Package Lists... Done
> Building Dependency Tree... Done
> E: The package smsclient needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive
> for it.
> topoi:/home2/hendrik#

So I can't seem to get anything else done. I cannot install or uninstall, and
it won't proceed until the matter is resolved.

In conclusion, my complete /etc/apt/sources.list file, including all the
commented out stuff from previous years of Debian:

Re: Firefox Broken After Extensions Update

2005-12-05 Thread Steve Lamb
Kenneth Jacker wrote:

Whenever firefox wigged out it was always the same extension for me,
SwitchProxy. The author decided to put his own auto-update in which hangs
whenever his web server is not available to serve the current version number.
It wouldn't be so bad except he does not honor Firefox's own setting to not
check auto-update stuff. It has it's own. If you have it that'd be the first
one I'd try disabling.

Debian 3.1 on 915 mother board... problems

My Debian 3.1 Sarge, which otherwise works fine, tends to reboot the
system approximately twice every eight hours.

Any idea what the message below, recorded immediately one such reboot,
indicates? Does it imply a hardware or software fault? Thanks in
advance. FN

dvd recording, dvdcss, etc.

2005-12-05 Thread Matt Price
Hi there,

I have made a copy of a dvd which is encrypted with libdvdcss. I'm
pretty sure the copy (which is for research purposes) is legal under
Canadian law, so please let's not get into that. I made the copy in
the following way:

dd if=/dev/hdd of=dvd_file.iso
then
dvdrecord dev=ATA:1,1,0 -dao dvd_file.iso

I did md5sum checks on the original disk, the copy on my hd, and the
copied disk. All come out the same. The .iso file on my computer
plays fine under vlc, though I have some trouble with totem and
mplayer. However, the copied dvd doesn't play back properly under
any player. I find this odd since, as I said, the md5sums are all the
same. When mounted as iso9660, loop, the filesystem looks identical
to the one on the hard drive. I can't really figure out what I've
done wrong. Are there tricks regarding css, or anything else, that
might help me here? was the -dao option a possible source of error?
this is the first dvd I've burned so I don't have much experience with
this stuff.

thanks,

matt

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2

filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193

I just reformatted the partition.

I tried to
mke2fs -S /dev/rd/c0d0p3
followed by
e2fsck -f /dev/rd/c0d0p3
but it didn't work.

Is there any way to find out what went wrong and why the superblock
could not be recovered. It would just be comforting to know how
something like this can be avoided in future.

Thanks for any help.
