lsi logic 1068 controller supported?

2007-09-06 Thread x x
Hi,

LSI Logic 1068 controller is supported in the debian linux?

Thanks

Unblocking sound card, or adding stream (newbie)

2007-09-06 Thread Dr. Jennifer Nussbaum
I have a laptop with a sound card that only supports a
single stream. (People on #debian helped me figure
this out.) This is annoying not because i want to play
twelve different sypmhonies at once through high-def
systems, but just so i can listen to music while
getting beeps from Gaim, or whatever.

If theres no way to do this, bummer i guess. But my
problem is that sometimes i seem to have something
blocking the sound card and i cant figure out what it
is. I dont THINK im running any sound thing ,but then
if i try to run xmms i get a "something's blocking
your sound card" message, or if i play a YouTube video
i just get no sound at all.

When this happens, how do i find out what's blocking
hte sound card, and how do i kill this so i can play
what i want?

Thanks.

You can install Win again, but you have to find for a Live CD an then
restore grub follow the next steps:
1) mount the Windows partition
2) with the command grub-install, you can reinstall the grub on the MBR
3) and the last, reboot an try

No need to mount the Windows partition. And it can be the Debian

how to compile a xen dom0 kernel the debian way

2007-09-06 Thread Jonas Meurer

hello,

i would like to give xen a try, but i didn't manage to compile a dom0
host kernel yet.

that's because i would like to use a recent linux kernel (2.6.20 at
least), build it the debian way (with make-kpkg), and as well build
some external modules (nvidia-legacy-96xx, ivtv) with module-assistent
for it.

in irc (#xen or ##xen) i was told to use the ubuntu linux-source-2.6.22
2.6.22-10.30 package, and according to the changelog it should contain
xen patches, but unfortunately a 'make menuconfig' in the sources didn't
give any xen options in 'processor-type and features'.

so how do you compile a xen dom0 host-kernel? is it possible with recent
kernel sources, and where do i find the corresponding xen patches?

thanks in advance,
 jonas

I just reinstalled the gnome tools I had uninstalled, and also check the
console kbd package, the problem still exists: error message during startup,
can not start X automatically.

If its about the keymap, which package should I have?
I checked in the installed package, there are console-data console-tools and
the kbd I just installed.

I am not sure which package removal caused this.
I was doing sth cleaning the packages that is not what I want, like
Openoffice, which will remove some kind of gnome tools as I saw during the
removal.

I think you are looking for apache2ctl, as apachectl would be part of the

When i run the gui antivirus scanner (1.1.2) that uses clamav, it tells me the

however, as freshclam needs to be setuid clamav. I did that once, but when it
was updated to a new version, it removed that setuid part. So i left it as it
was probably not ment to be set setuid?

The problem comes down to the makers of clamav dictating that everyone should
use their latest version.

I agree this is annoying.

I also understand why debian wouldn't want to put
this latest version in etch's repo just yet.

I'm curious as to what is the recommended way to handle this: stick with the
debian releases or install clamav by hand each time they come up with yet
another new version...

I recommend installing from http://www.backports.org/

Then configure sudo to allow your normal user account to start freshclam.

It shouldn't be uninstalled since many daemons and system management

Thanks, I tried that and it didn't help, but I'm not sure I know which of the

problems, but in my case it seems to be timing out on boot.

Thanks,

Theres always the option of disabling it all together.

update-rc.d -f exim4 remove

But, as others have said, its good to have a MTA running for notifications
like cron, logcheck and others to go out. I would possibley install
exim4-daemon-light, set delivery to local only, check to make sure your
hostname is in /etc/hosts and set hosts in /etc/nsswitch.conf to: hosts:
files dns

Hi, I have the same problem in my Desktop with Debian but only when it
is not connected to Internet while booting up, try to measure the
MTA's starting time when connected and when not connected to the

Most probably the previous installation attempt was not successful; this
means that apt has to try again at every opportunity.

Read

http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/release-notes/ch-information.en.html

especially sections 5.2 (kernel upgrade and module-init-tools) and 5.3
(XFree86 to X.Org). Try to remember exactly what you did so far and
decide if you think that you can still fix these issues or if it will be
easier to install Etch "from scratch" (after backing up your $HOME).

Yep. There're background jobs mailing "you" if something's going wrong or not.
Without MTA you won't get this messages.

What kind of messages, more information than in the log files? It's a desktop
system, not some critical server.

It shouldn't be uninstalled since many daemons and system management
tasks report via email, and they expect to find an MTA to send the mail
with.

If your system isn't connected to the internet on boot, have you

clamav: uptodate or not?

2007-09-06 Thread Rody

How can i tell if clamav is up to date?

If i run freshclam as root it tells me that main.inc is up to date, but as all
mirrors refuse to connect, i can't say if daily.inc and any other file are
ever updated. (too often connections with outdated version)

When i run the gui antivirus scanner (1.1.2) that uses clamav, it tells me the
virus database is 3 months old. Trying to update from that program is useless
however, as freshclam needs to be setuid clamav. I did that once, but when it
was updated to a new version, it removed that setuid part. So i left it as it
was probably not ment to be set setuid?

The problem comes down to the makers of clamav dictating that everyone should
use their latest version. I also understand why debian wouldn't want to put
this latest version in etch's repo just yet.

I'm curious as to what is the recommended way to handle this: stick with the
debian releases or install clamav by hand each time they come up with yet
another new version...

Starting MTA: why does it take so long?

2007-09-06 Thread Chris
Hi,

I have several desktop systems, and regadless of whether I leave exim4
unconfigured, or setup for local system use only, it takes quite a while to
start on boot.

I don't really know what the MTA is supposed to do on a laptop or desktop
system, but I've read that it shouldn't be uninstallted. Is this really the
case?

Thanks for any suggestions,

It depends on what file system you are using, but I would guesss that it's
probably a file size limit in radius that is causing this. In order to
keep this under control, I would use the logrotate to rotate the radius
logs either on a set time interval or on a size based rule.

I created a brand new xorg.conf file, using the "vesa" driver, and the
second Xorg process was gone. I changed the driver to "fglrx" and there
it was again. So yes, we have found the culprit.

I guess this means also that we (I) have reached a dead end, since fglrx
is not open source. I will look at the ATI website and try to collect
more information.

It would help to know which packages you (un)installed right before the
problem started. Check out the /var/log/dpkg.log* files.

To rule out hardware problems, test your system with Knoppix or another
suitable live CD.

My guess is that you accidentally uninstalled one of the packages that
handles the keyboard setup. What output do you get for:

dpkg -l \*console\* \*kbd\* | awk '/^[^D|+]/{print $1,$2,$3}'

Changed module load order in the new kernels and/or a problem with your
/etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules. You have to make sure that
this file has exactly one entry for each NIC in your computer and that
the correct MAC address is associated with the each eth* name.

TV card

2007-09-06 Thread Mark Grieveson
My capture card does not have an audio output jack; so, I get an image,
but no sound. The help for tvtime stated that I could use sox, with
the following command:

sox -r 32000 -w -t ossdsp /dev/dsp2 -t ossdsp /dev/dsp

This works, provided I run the command "modprobe btaudio" first.
However, it is so cluttered with noise as to make it useless. Anyone
have any ideas how I can eliminate the noise?

I'm using Etch.

I don't think that this is related to the two Xorg processes. I see the
same warning with my Intel Q965 graphics card, simply because it shows
up under two bus addresses in lspci, but I don't have two Xorg processes
running.

Maybe the full Xorg log (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) has more clues.

Maybe the fglrx driver is to blame; did you already check if you still
see two Xorg processes with the basic "vesa" driver enabled instead?

You've likely tried all the normal tricks for a printer, but, just in
case, here are my generic suggestions (I'm not familiar with the
specific printer):

Check out http://localhost:631/, and see if you can configure your
printer there (assuming you have cupsys installed).

Install printconf, and run it in your terminal as root.

Install foomatic-filters-ppds and/or linuxprinting.org-ppds, and try
http://localhost:631/ and/or printconf once again.

Good luck,
Mark

Firefox on AMD64 Debian Etch

I am not able to change the default fonts in Firefox, in both my AMD64
systems. The problem is absent in I386 systems. All these systems are
running Debian Etch. The AMD64 systems simply ignore the default font
setting--both font family, and font size.

I have been using Linux, and Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox, since 2000, but I am
unable to figure this out. No back-ports are present. I created a new
profile, but it has the same problem. Google search does not show any
similar problems; has nobody else faced this? Kindly suggest a solution.

I do have a very limited knowledge of Linux and the distros. I bought
YDL 3 years ago when I first got into Linux OS because I had 3 old-
world PowerMacs and I wanted to start learning how to use Linux to
network. However, I never had any success in getting the old worlds
to even install, and I tried many, many times! Since I had a copy of
YDL, I bought a new world IMac and had no trouble installing YDL, but
I have not used it much. Since then, I have been dual-booting FC2 and
XP on my favorite desktop, but I rarely use FC2 - I just did the dual-
boot to see if I could do it right and have a Linux partition to play
around with.

Now, I am about to graduate from the Univ of Memphis with a degree
from our business college (I dont know why) in Information Systems,
but in all honesty, we have had very little hands-on experience with
Linux. So, I want to set up a network in my room, consisting of
whatever hardware needed (I have a lot of old stuff and am willing to
buy more if needed) and learn the skills I will need to achieve my
goal, which is to be a Sys Admin and maintain a network.

As a part-time job, I have about 50 customers (mostly over the age of
60) that I do at-home computer support and teaching. My job consists
mostly of assisting them with email (attachments and such), web
browsing and just general computer usage. All of this is Xp or Vista,
of course, and therefore I maintain a laptop running Vista (which I
regret buying) and a desktop running XP so that I can stay current.
All of this is to say that if I had a choice, I would run everything
Linux...but I have to try to stay current with MS for the sake of my
part-time job, which has paid a lot of my bills recently.

How can I fix that? Thanks for all of the help!

There's no matching going on here. What are you trying to do that

My mistake. I used the perl statement above in another script. That

The last line of /etc/adjtime is "LOCAL".

In fact, after some Google searching, I wonder if the problem doesn't
come from the way the kernel access /dev/rtc. I've read somewhere taht
you qometimes have to add the "--directisa" to hwclock. I've tried and
it seems to work. I will see tomorrow when I'll restart my machine.

Thanks for your help.

And what is the content of "/etc/adjtime"?
I ask, because the behaviour of "hwclock" depends on the contents of
this file (man hwclock).
On my system "/etc/adjtime" contains as the last of three lines "UTC",
in "/etc/default/rcS" there is "UTC=yes". So the hardware clock is run
in UTC. The system time zone is defined by "/etc/timezone" and the
summer time setting by "/etc/localtime". Both files can be reconfigured
in the Debian way:
dpkg-reconfigure tzdata

It is the *daemon* that you wish to wrap that is the first argument in
hosts.[allow, deny] - in this case mysqld. Your network/netmask looks
fine. 'man hosts.allow'

To query a key this way, you have to be able to connect to the
keyserver on the hkp port (which is number 11371 I think). Do your

One reply suggested the following:
gpg --keyserver wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net --recv-keys 6070D3A1
gpg --export --armor 6070D3A1 | apt-key add -

Another reply suggested:
gpg --recv-key A70DAF536070D3A1
gpg --export A70DAF536070D3A1|apt-key add -

When I run the first line of either pair, the command times out after
2 minutes and returns the following message:

thing related to ipv6.

Add a 2nd NIC (and wireless card) into your oldest/slowest
(expandable) Linux box and make that into your firewalling router.
(You might have to buy a $50 desktop, though, and make that the router.)

Or if that's not physically possible or maybe too noisy, buy any one
of a number of supporters wifi routers and upgrade it to a fully
functional Linux system.

It sounds like you want to put your kernel on hold. That will stop apt
and dselect from upgrading a package. In order to put a package
on hold for example:

echo ''linux-image-2.6-686 hold'' | dpkg --set-selections

although, you would replace the package name with the one you use.

If you are comfortable with dselect I'd say use it. I'm just not familiar
with it myself. But as I've found out, it's just a front end to apt, hey,
learn something new every day!

date/time problem since kernel change

2007-09-06 Thread Julien Barnier
Hi all,

I recently switched from an own compiled 2.6.20 kernel to the debian
linux-image-2.6.22 one (I'm using Sid).

And since I use this new kernel, I get a problem with the time on my
machine : at each reboot I get two hours more than the real time. I'm
quite sure it is a problem with syncing system and hardware clock, but
I'm a little lost.

Furthermore, if I try to use the hwclock command, I get an error
message : for it to work I must first unload the rtc module.

HEre is the output of the date and hwclock commands on my machine now
(the realt ime is the hwclock one).

,
| [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ date
| jeudi 6 septembre 2007, 11:04:00 (UTC+0200)
| [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo hwclock --show
| jeu 06 sep 2007 09:04:07 CEST -0.092243 secondes
`

Thanks in advance for any help. And unfortunately, I can't use ntp on
my network...
