modifer fstab by mistake, can not boot debian
I have been using debian(sid) for quite a while. I also have windows xp installed on my pc too. When I use debian, I modified fstab to let debian mouse an NTFS drive automatically. Today, to test some parameters in fstab, I changed a parameter for the NTFS drive from auto(which worked fine previously) to default(just like ext3 ). But after that, the system could not boot. It stoped right here: "Please use option nls= in the future. NTFS Volume Version 3.1" I dont know how to do now. I really have very important data from my research on my pc. Is it possible to edit fstab or just boot to some kind of basic system, so at least I can rescue my data? Many thanks, I am having a tough thanksgiving now. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

System won't boot after successful Debian installation
Hi, I have installed Debian 4.0 without any apparent problem. However when I boot the PC I am getting the error 'Primary master hard disk fail'. When the computer starts up the BIOS recognizes my sole HD as the primary master. Is this a problem with the hard disk itself? The HD is a new warranty replacement from Western Digital so I would expect it to be OK. Regards, David email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Configuring server with a virtual package
Hi I am in the process of rebuilding one of my servers and I thought hey why not build a package, that links all the other packages I need, and the corresponding configuration files. I am having a look at debhelper and maint-guide. for example for server test.acme.com I was going to create a package test.acme.com and making it dependant on the required packages (I can specific a base minimum). Any one else done this, what hurdles might I face ? How am i going to handle 2 packages owning a file, for example for bind and my custom package and the file /etc/bind/named.conf ??? If I had a backup storage large enough to > hold all the data ... Ouch. First, ensure that you have exhausted all backup options. Backup to another machine? How large are these disks? You say each has a couple of GB spare; is that free-space on the drive or that a partition with a filesystem that has some free space? You don't necessarily need backup storage large enough for all the data, just do do one partition at a time. Is the data already compressed? I've never tried resizing non-LVM partitions so I wouldn't attempt that without a backup. Hey, I don't attempt anything without a backup; including doing a backup. Your best bet may be to buy a fourth disk and make it the firs physical volume of a volume group, make your LV and put a filesystem on it. Transfer one drives data to it and do the shell-game from there. Or create an LV+filesystem and use it to hold a compressed tarball of the first data partition. It all depends on the size of the data set and the size of these drives. Doug. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

ffmpeg encoding issues & AAC
Guys, I do quite a bit of video encoding / audio encoding in debian lenny, and oftentimes I use tovid (tovid.sourceforge.net) to do the encoding, usually with good results. But recently I have had a problem with ffmpeg when I attempt to encode what looks like a 5.1 channel aac file that's part of an mp4 video, it tells me that it can't do the encode, that encoding more than 2 channels is not supported. The upshot is that I may have to find another tool to extract the audio portion of the mp4 file, and then downmix it to two channels, then resample to ac3 dvd standard audio format. So are there any ffrmpeg experts that can help me ? First, ffmpeg is on lenny, like so: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp/Star Trek 8 - First Contact [x264.AAC.5.1.subs.DrJ]$ apt-cache policy ffmpeg ffmpeg: Installed: 3:20070917-0.0 Candidate: 3:20070917-0.0 Version table: *** 3:20070917-0.0 0 990 http://debian-multimedia.org testing/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 0.cvs20070307-6 0 990 http://ftp.debian.org testing/main Packages 600 http://ftp.debian.org sid/main Packages [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp/Star Trek 8 - First Contact [x264.AAC.5.1.subs.DrJ]$ ffmpeg is called thusly: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp/Star Trek 8 - First Contact [x264.AAC.5.1.subs.DrJ]$ ffmpeg -i Star\ Trek\ 8\ -\ First\ Contact\ \[x264.AAC.5.1.subs.DrJ\].mp4 -vn -ab 224k -ar 48000 -acodec ac3 -y foo.ac3 FFmpeg version SVN-rUNKNOWN, Copyright (c) 2000-2007 Fabrice Bellard, et al. configuration: --prefix=/usr --libdir=${prefix}/lib --shlibdir=${prefix}/lib --incdir=${prefix}/include/ffmpeg --enable-shared --enable-libmp3lame --enable-gpl --enable-libfaad --mandir=${prefix}/share/man --enable-libvorbis --enable-pthreads --enable-libfaac --enable-libxvid --enable-pp --enable-libamr-nb --enable-libamr-wb --enable-x11grab --enable-libogg --enable-libgsm --enable-libx264 --enable-liba52 --enable-libtheora --extra-cflags=-Wall -g -fPIC -DPIC --cc=ccache cc --enable-swscaler libavutil version: 49.5.0 libavcodec version: 51.44.0 libavformat version: 51.13.3 built on Sep 17 2007 15:29:56, gcc: 4.2.1 (Debian 4.2.1-5) Input #0, mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2, from 'Star Trek 8 - First Contact [x264.AAC.5.1.subs.DrJ].mp4': Duration: 01:46:09.1, start: 0.00, bitrate: 1390 kb/s Stream #0.0(und): Video: h264, yuv420p, 704x416, 25.00 fps(r) Stream #0.1(eng): Audio: mpeg4aac, 48000 Hz, 5:1 Stream #0.2(ger): Audio: mpeg4aac, 48000 Hz, 5:1 Stream #0.3(eng): Data: tx3g / 0x67337874 Stream #0.4(ger): Data: tx3g / 0x67337874 Stream #0.5(dan): Data: tx3g / 0x67337874 Stream #0.6(dut): Data: tx3g / 0x67337874 Stream #0.7(fin): Data: tx3g / 0x67337874 Stream #0.8(ces): Audio: mpeg4aac, 48000 Hz, stereo Stream #0.9(hun): Audio: mpeg4aac, 48000 Hz, stereo Stream #0.10(nor): Data: tx3g / 0x67337874 Stream #0.11(swe): Data: tx3g / 0x67337874 Stream #0.12(tur): Data: tx3g / 0x67337874 Stream #0.13(pol): Audio: mpeg4aac, 48000 Hz, stereo Resampling with input channels greater than 2 unsupported.Can't resample. It is commercial and expensive. If the functions you are trying out are simple, then maxima (open source, active mailing list support) might be able to do. Recreate Certificate ofr Apache-SSL
Hello, all! I am trying to set up apache-ssl on my Debian Etch box (it is an iMac G3, but this is not a PowerPC issue, so I am not posting to the debian-powerpc list). When I followed the prompts to enter the hostname for my box, 1) I wasn't sure if it just wanted the computer name (e.g., yamato) or the FQDN (e.g., yamato.mydomain.net), so I just entered the computer name and 2) I misspelled the computer name :) So, I need to generate a new certificate at any rate. My questions are 1) should I put the computer name or FQDN in the hostname when I generate the new certificate and 2) how do I generate a new certificate? Re: Which AM2 motherboard and chipset do you use?
On 20/11/07 16:39,Augustin wrote: Hello, As mentioned is a previous thread, my current computer is having some hardware problems that prevent me from installing Debian (It is currently running Mandriva). Since I have some cash coming in, I am now definitely looking at buying a new computer on which I will exclusively install Debian. I am set to buying a socket AM2 mainboard, with a slow CPU, a minimum amount of RAM and use the onboard graphic unit, but I would like to buy a fairly good/excellent mainboard + very good power supply unit, so that I can over time, as prices drop, upgrade CPU, RAM and buy a good, dedicated video card. For the power supply, I am thinking to buy a 500~550 Watt, 80plus certified unit. [cut] I built my PC a couple of months ago and it works with Debian sid very well. The main components are: 1) AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ (EE, lower power consumption - however I'd go for BE-2350 (45W) now) 2) MoBo: Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe ATX Socket AM2 Nvidia Nforce 570 SLI It's really good one, chipsets are cooled passively (heatpipes), many connectors on board - you can find good reviews on google. No graphics onboard, so: 3) used (eBay) XFX Geforce 7600 GT Fatal1ty; Great, passive cooling so very silent but quite powerful. Now you could buy 8600GT. 4) HDD WD (WD5000AAKS 500GB SATA II) Silent, fast, reliable. 5) RAM: 2GB Corsair 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 675MHz/PC2-5400 6) Case: Coolermaster Elite 330 Black Mid Tower Case - No PSU quite cheap (ca. £28) but decent 7) Power Supply - Coolermaster IGreen 430W (85% Efficiency ATX12V v2.2 120mm Fan) I can tell you that the 430W is really enough unless you want to put a big array of HDDs inside or power-consuming new SLI gfx. There are also more powerful versions. I added 2 rather silent 120mm fans (front and back). My PC is quite silent (the noisiest part is the boxed processor fan, which I plan to replace). It's stable, no problems with network, SATA, audio, USB - everything works. I compiled kernel myself, but most thing worked with the Debian kernel (AFAIR). -- Cheers, Michal R. Octave is great but like you said it is more like a programming language. I think the best option for you out there is GNUPLOT. It is very powerful and can do everything that you ask it for. The only caveat is that you have to write some sort of "script file" for it to be effective. You can use it in the interactive mode and do simple plots. But if you would like to add labels and such it would be easier to put in in a gnuplot script file. I actually think this is more powerful than a GUI application. Here is an example of a GNUPLOT script file. set key left box set samples 50 plot [-10:10] sin(x),atan(x),cos(atan(x)) Which plots sin(x), arctan(x), and cos(arctan(x)) in one graph. As you can see it is quite simple. Now, if you want to run this plot again simply save it as "plot1.gnu" and re-run it using "gnuplot plot1.gnu" That's it! For more examples of what gnuplot can do check out this web site. http://gnuplot.sourceforge.net/demo_4.2/ Also there are front ends to gnuplot but I would rather recommend the above "script" files as a learning tool. Obviously my fooling with the envy/nvidia settings changes xorg.conf but I never manually changed the keyboard settings, so it is one of those configuration applications that does it. The ONLY thing I change in xorg.conf is that one line, from nvidia to nv, after a kernel update, until I can go back in and redo the driver. -- Paul Cartwright Registered Linux user # 367800 Registered Ubuntu User #12459 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I guess the new version of Xorg is somehow less tolerant towards ill-defined configuration settings. 3-D graphing software for Linux?
0In an advanced Calculus course, we are dealing with functions with 2 (and more) variables. Is there any 3-D graphing software for Linux available? Something like Kalgebra, but with a bit more functions such as multiple functions graphed at the same time, asymptote min max and other significant points, zoom into 3-D graph, graph of derivative and integral, etc. I have been directed to look at some math programming languages such as root, octave, and R, but I really need an application, not a language. This app will be used by others in my calculus course, people with no computer background, so these language solutions simply will not work for us. Thanks in advance for any advice. Moving email files from an old Evolution to a new Version
I've replaced my old clunker P3 machine running Mandrake10 with a new shiny box with AMD64 dualcore with Debian. My mail records on the old machine run to almost half a gig and span more than 40 local directories under the inbox and go back quite a few years. I presumed that the 'import' routine on Evolution would be able to import the files for storage and use on the new box but it appears that Evolution will only import from 'other' programmes and not from it's own older versions. I have read some similar responses which say that you need to manually recreate every directory and hand copy the emails. Surely not? Anyone know how to solve this problem? ldap and samba with debian problem
I'm using openldap2.3-2.3.30 with samba-3.0.24-6 and phpldapadmin-0.9.8.3-8 on Debian Etch. Actually it's running on a virtual machine using VMware. I had everything setup and running smoothly. I was testing a script to create users home/data/profiles and set ownership/permissions. Somehow the script changed the ownership of / (and subdirs) to one of the users (but not perms as far as I could tell). I set it back to owner root. I then set the ownership back on everything I know of. Now slapd will not start unless I take out shadowLastChange out of the following acl: access to attrs=userPassword, shadowLastChange by dn="cn=admin,dc=mecompany,dc=ie" write by anonymous auth by self write by * none In pdbedit all users come up with: pdb_get_group_sid: Failed to find Unix account for admin Primary Group SID:(NULL SID) And when I try to access phpldapadmin: Error Fatal error: Cannot read your configuration file "/usr/share/phpldapadmin/config/config.php", its permissions are too strict. Is there some ownership that's possibly still wrong or did it do something to the database? Scratching my head for a few days now. Sometimes it takes some time to fully fix problems like this, so I'd save aptitude purge for a last resort unless you're pretty comfortable with what you're doing. - - -- If programmers deserve to be rewarded for creating innovative programs, by the same token they deserve to be punished if they restrict the use of these programs. - Richard Stallman - -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFHRFARg6qL2BGnx4QRAsq7AJ9gzLlLJrAhUz9myxST5bIh58cnnACfaKyK wvNr0tBboiuv8x88yvdTMdA= =gZ3B - -END PGP SIGNATURE- -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFHRGCCg6qL2BGnx4QRAs5EAJ4yJ0KZKO+sW6g5uTAr0eUpmKipcACfXG5B GDGBKWi6loIg/bo2zYugBCc= =VCRq -END PGP SIGNATURE-

In-place migration to LVM?
Hello, I have a data file collection on three hard disks, each with just one partition. The 'primary' partition has the complete directory structure. The two 'secondary' partitions partially mirror that directory structure. There are some data files on the primary partition. For each data file on one of the secondary partitions, there is a soft link to it from the primary partition. Each partition has a couple of GB space left. Is it possible to migrate these partitions into one logical volume without loosing or backing up the data? If I had a backup storage large enough to hold all the data ... Any ideas? You could look at shorewall. It has a great set of docs in shorewall-doc. Your laptop has three potential interfaces: eth(cable), eth(wireless) and ppp. Do the two eth end up with different unit numbers? (I've never used wireless). From a firewall perspective, does it matter if at any given time you're using a particular interface? Assuming that you're not forwarding, although perhaps the Nat config will change. You could create a set of config files for each setup and write a script that copies the correct set to /etc/shorewall then restarts shorewall. Have the script start when an interface goes up. Re: recommend a flatbed scanner
Hello You may try to use Epson Perfection 1270 it works perfectly. There is a proprietary driver you have to use with it, and must pay attention whether USB suspend is not turned on into kernel (it caused me mad, because I couldn't understand why scanner is freezing after making preview). Re: Lenny doesn't recognize virtual disks on a Vmware ESX 3.0 virtual machine.
Hi all, the problem is in the 2.6.22 kernel. I installed etch on an ESX 3.0 Vmware virlual machine (it uses 2.6.18 kernel) and all works fine. Then I upgraded from etch to lenny (it uses 2.6.22 kernel) after the reboot the hard disks are not recognized and the boot halts waiting for root file system to be mounted. If I start with the old kernel it works again. I have to do dist-upgrade from time to time and throwing away new kernel is annoying. How can I solve this problem? Qemu PCI Bug -- Minix 3.1.2a -- Pinning
Hi, Does anyone in this list run Minix under qemu? It seems there is a "PCI'' problem so that qemu 0.9.0 can not emulate the REALTEK 8029 ethernet chip. Please let me know if you have heard this problem (and solution -- URLs, mailing lists, etc.). Meanwhile, I have un-installed qemu, and put back manually qemu 0.8.X into /usr/local/bin. I have tried to read "APT HOWTO" about pinning; but unfortunately it is too difficult to digest for me. Is there any "Pinning for Dummies" document available; with step by step instruction on how to keep a previous version of a package? thank you! -- Raja Ali M.I. I use firestarter as well on my etch laptop. One problem I have is that I have to manually reconfigure firestarter to switch from cable (eth0) to wireless (eth2). How did you solve this problem? If you just configure it once, say for eth0, it will simply ignore all the traffic on eth2 (IIUC), if you happen to later use eth2 without reconfiguration of firestarter. I guess one could write a script to automate this, but you should be aware of the problem. Is there a site(http/ftp) having all the available deb packages?
Hi All: I'm wondering if there is a good site besides "debian.org" where we can search all the available deb packages, description, and download info? It's similar to the "rpmfind.net" managing all the packages so that whenever I need one specific package that is not in the official mirror list, I can direct myself to the site. Thanks. - Michael

I I tend to prefer HP machines. Partly for build quality, partly for the HP attitude to Linux (they acknowledge it exists, and provide support), and partly on price (not cheapest, but not too expensive, either). Kelly has recommended the Sane project, with the proviso that HP multi-function devices aren't supported.
