A perfectly reasonable consideration. To determine whether to start
online, Evo must use some GNOME feature that's not being activated
when under KDE.

gconf elements are manipulated with /usr/bin/gconf-editor and stored
in ~/.gconf.

IOW, you certainly *can* do it, but it's definitely sub-optimal,
since it's a deeply GNOME-only app. "Things" would run smoother if
you ran a slightly-Gtk app like Icedove, and totally smoothly if you

The complete Gnome library is installed on the machine, and once the

Kmail is already in use and Evolution was chosen for business purposes
because it is an integrated suite, with calendar, tasks, and email.
Unfortunately, Icedove (T-Bird) doesn't have that level of integration
and functionality.
The knack is knowing exactly *which* gconf element it is that needs to
be set. I've gone through the system directory (~/.evolution) but there
doesn't seem to be any conf files which enable that option to be
tweaked. In fact, the Evolution developers seem to consider this a

At present, Debian supports PowerPc. Have you check the BTS for possible
issue? What have you had issues with? If everyone who had a PPC did not
participate in its upkeep, there will be none. So if you want it
supported, do give Debian a change to help. Just a thought.

Hi David,
I think you might want to ask your question on the 'debian-mentors' list
as its a list for beginning people seeking packaging advice. Also, there is the
'debian-devel' list, but its for people asking question about debian
developement which includes packaging.

I have the following line in my /etc/fstab:

My concern is not for corruption of the server. My concern is whether
-- if I employ on the server the same password and passphrase which I
employ on the desktop (my principal machine) -- compromise of the
server necessitates that I change the password and the passphrase on
the desktop machine.

In other words, if I were to give you free access to my server, so
that you could inspect all the system files, would you be able to
deduce the password and passphrase, which are the same as those which
I use on the desktop machine?

I'd like to them try to get their licensing fee out of *real* Jaguars

Same username is a convenience, account passwords need not be the
same, and if you gpg-genkey then distribute that key to each host's
~/.ssh, you'll ssh-add once for each sshd you subsequently make
requests of.

> That is, if the server is compromised, should the sysop change his

If the server's compromised, you should reinstall. Same thing you do
with penicillin these days; finish it and wipe out even the last
vestiges of the bug that infected you. Using ssh means conversations
between boxes are encrypted, so no one's going to sniff passwords from
your traffic. Disable sshd password logins, insisting it use crypto
keys for authentication instead.

As long as you've no keylogger running on the box where you ssh-add
(or gpg-genkey), I can't see how anyone's going to come close to
breaking in, assuming the rest of the system's been sufficiently
policed. You're not running daemons you don't need, and you watch the
ones you do, yes?

Kerberos, SELinux, tripwire, portknocker, ... Or, unplug it, put it
in a locked vault, and enjoy the peace and quiet.

If you have good backups, why worry about it? Reinstall's minutes
away.

DRI not working with latest lenny

2008-04-02 Thread Lindsay Powles
I recently updated lenny to pick up the new 2.6.24 kernel. Since then DRI is
not working for me:

(II) intel(0): [drm] DRM interface version 1.0
(II) intel(0): [drm] drmSetBusid failed (8, pci::00:02.0), Permission denied
(EE) intel(0): [dri] DRIScreenInit failed. Disabling DRI.

I've checked dmesg for DRM working, and it is. I've also made sure permissions
are ok, and they are. So I'm thinking it might be the problem people have
reported with the i915 kernel module being compiled with a different version of
gcc than the kernel itself.

Is there an easy way to just recompile the i915 module (ala module-assistant
method) without having to download the entire kernel source?

Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks.

I guess it all depends on how much negativity you imbue into the

IOW, you certainly *can* do it, but it's definitely sub-optimal,
since it's a deeply GNOME-only app. "Things" would run smoother if
you ran a slightly-Gtk app like Icedove, and totally smoothly if you
ran the KDE MUA KMail.

But as far as your original question, I would not be surprised if a

As I said before, it's the uswsusp package. it's trying to resume a
suspended system, but it can't find the volume which claims to hold
the resume image. You can either purge uswsusp, or if you want to keep
it around, at least point it to your swap partition so it can look for
and fail to find a resume image. Then it should at least gracefully
fail and allow a seemingly normal boot. Look in your
/etc/uswsusp.conf and set the resume device properly. Then rebuild
your initrd's with update-initramfs -u.

Essentially, what is happening is uswsusp is looking for some
partition on which it thinks it could find a resume image. But that
partition apparently doesn't exist and rather than do a normal boot on
a system that might have been suspended, thus risking file system
damage, it's doing the smart thing and asking you what it should
do. If you specift that partition properly in /etc/uswsusp.conf then
it will find that partition, confirm that there is no resume image
there and then proceed with a normal boot.

Had the same sort of thing a while ago with epiphany and liferea. In
my case, after a process of elimination, network-manager was the problem.

Cheers Rob. The machine in question isn't running any network-manager. I
disabled it sometime back, so unless I have overlooked it, I really
don't think that that would be the problem.

Yes! That was it. It was a typo, and correcting it lets me now use the

Think I solved it:

sudo hdparm -A1 -d1 /dev/hda
sudo hdparm -B 255 /dev/hda

Actually, I think it's just the 2nd line that does it, but at the same time
for different issues I added the first line to the script that I run right
after booting. Seems fine now. I'm not sure why this didn't work the first
time I tried it. The only thing I can think of that might be relevant is that
I did a re-install of my os (etch) about two months ago, from an os
(half-assed etch) that had numerous problems from a defective installation.

Thanks for the help,

Huh? I think you might be using the wrong distribution. Are you
confusing hacking with configuring?

That depends on the chipset. Maybe look for a laptop without built in
wireless and buy a "supported" pcmcia card?

There are some websites which can help you decide whether a particular
laptop has any gotchas with Linux, google on "laptop linux"

iceape and mutt store mail in different locations, so unless you set up
imap mixing mutt and iceape will only add to the problems.

Can you *please* post the contents of your .muttrc?

Also as root, can you *please* post the output of:

Strange problem when using two monitors (dual view) with Xorg

2008-04-02 Thread Adrian Christiansen
I've been trying to make my brand new second hand tft work as a second
monitor to my Ibm Thinkpad T23.
The Thinkpad T23 has S3 Inc. SuperSavage IX/C SDR (xorg does support duaview
with this chip).
My Thinkpad got the latest bios updates, I'm running latest X.org found in
unstable (1:7.3+10).

The problem is, if I start Iceweasel on the external monitor, it will crash.
You can't use the keyboard (NumLock button doesn't work), but pressing the
power button will cause Linux to power off, the screens are black.
And if I display images with feh, I get weird noises, the same when I set
the background. If I play movies with mplayer, I can't play them in full
screen, only the original size. These problems occur only on the external
screen. The internal lcd is just as usual.

I took a screenshot, and uploaded it onto flickr, the noise is seen here.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2117/2382485843_04abea007a_o.jpg

I've been looking around trying to find any help, but I don't really know
what to look after.
Anyone heard about this problem?

Starting Evolution with work-online enabled

2008-04-02 Thread andy
If one starts Evolution from the KDE kicker (as opposed to from the CLI)
it always starts off-line. I've reviewed as many docs on Evolution as I
can find, but cannot see anything that would enable me to configure it
so that it starts on-line. Has anyone ever been able to set this up in
such a way to work on-line when it starts up?

TIA

I have an older model, VGN-N11S and it works fine, but it heavily
depends on the model. What you need is a somewhat recent kernel for
stuff like the backlight.
At least in my toaster wireless works fine too (with the
iwl-module). The driver is in the kernel, what you do need is the
firmware though.

No, the router only passes packages along, in the same sub-net it is
only acting as a hub (actually, like a switch.)

However, I see 192.168.0.3 (zero) in /etc/hosts_allow, and 169.168.1.3
(one) in the hosts file. If this is not a typo, could as well be the
cause.

Yes, if I got those files wrong, I'd be in serious trouble. In
hosts.deny I have simply:

  ALL: ALL

which I understand denies all hosts access except those mentioned in
hosts.allow. In hosts.allow I have:

ALL:LOCAL
sshd: 192.168.0.3

My /etc/hosts:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.1.1 router.hartford-hwp.com router
192.168.1.4 teufel.hartford-hwp.com teufel
192.168.1.3 langhans.hartford-hwp.com langhans

In the hosts.allow, I list simply the laptop that I would like to use as
a SSH client, not the shared rounter, as you will note. Should I have
listed the router instead of langhans (the laptop)?

Buy a DELL. I've got an Inspiron 6400 with Ubuntu pre-installed and it

Check the keyboard options in gnome (system -> preferences -> gnome).
The option and command keys may be swapped.

What does 'mount /dev/hda3' print when executed as root? If it looks
like an error, what are the last few lines from 'dmesg'?

and doesn't 'noauto' means what it says?

noauto: Can only be mounted explicitly (i.e., the -a

server security :: user accounts, ssh, passphrases, etc.

2008-04-02 Thread Russell L. Harris
SYSTEM:

(1) firewall/router (SmoothWall Express 2.0) which (using NAT)
provides and protects both a "green" zone for a LAN and an
"orange" zone ("DMZ") for a publicly-accessible server

(2) ftp or http server in the DMZ

(3) desktop machine in the LAN from which the sysop maintains the
server

SITUATION:

It is convenient to use "scp" for transferring files between the
desktop machine in the LAN and the server, and to use "ssh" for
remote maintenance of the server, again from the desktop machine
in the LAN. And to eliminate the constant typing of password,
ssh-agent can be installed.

Such remote maintenance of the server from a machine in the LAN
becomes tedious unless there is on each machine an account with
the same username, password, and passphrase.

QUESTION:

Is there a major or unreasonable security risk if the sysop
creates on the server an account with the same username, password,
and passphrase as his account on the desktop machine? That is, if
the server is compromised, should the sysop change his password,
passphrase, etc.?

If so, what is the recommended alternative? Is there a HOWTO on
this subject?

The last line is the key. While I cannot say for certain the cause, I'd

Sony VAIO support, anyone have experience?

2008-04-02 Thread Noah Slater
Hello,

I am wanting to buy a new laptop primarily to move away from PowerPC so that my
machine is better supported by a default Debian installation.

I really like the look of the VAIOs but wanted to know if anyone has any
feedback on how well supported they are. I don't want to be patching kernels or
hacking my xorg to get things running smoothly.

Wireless would be nice too, preferably without using non-free software.

Tom,

It's time to take a step back and decide what you want your mail system
to do and then design an implementation that will do it. I don't think
chasing wierd behavior will get you from here to there. I suspect you
copied and pasted some complex Postfix configuration when something
simpler would have served you better.

But just in case I'm wrong, why not tell Postfix not to use Procmail?

Eduardo, I did this:

  $ sudo /usr/sbin/sshd -d -p
  ...
Server listening on :: port .
debug1: Bind to port on 0.0.0.0.

Then in an other terminal I did this:

And this caused the server to disconnect from the port and with that I
see the following to be appended to the stdout of the first terminal:

  debug1: rexec start in 4 out 4 newsock 4 pipe -1 sock 7

Ok, its probably a procmail problem. procmail is installed but there is

I have never created a procmailrc. I have started reading the man page

Enabling DMA with new MB

2008-04-02 Thread David Baron
After my old far-eastern MB died, replaced with an "aopen" MB with a somewhat
faster 600mhz PIII slot-1 CPU (I was running my old 500mhz PIII and 575).

Went through all the BIOS setups. A master-DMA can be enabled but the DMA on
the IDEs seems unavailable. Have it all "auto" -- BIOS choices for the IDEs
are "auto", p0, p1, p2 , p3, p4 and udma "auto" or disabled. Hdparm will not
allow -d1 either.

Other info:
~$ dmesg | grep DMA6b (rev 12) ID
  DMA 0 -> 4096
DMA zone: 56 pages used for memmap
  DMA zone: 0 pages reserved
DMA zone: 4040 pages, LIFO batch:0
Activating ISA DMA hang workarounds.
VP_IDE: VIA vt82c596b (rev 12) IDE UDMA66 controller on pci:00:07.1

~$ dmesg | grep IDE
Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver Revision: 7.00alpha2
Probing IDE interface ide0...
Probing IDE interface ide1...
VP_IDE: IDE controller at PCI slot :00:07.1
VP_IDE: chipset revision 6
VP_IDE: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
VP_IDE: VIA vt82c596b (rev 12) IDE UDMA66 controller on pci:00:07.1
VP_IDE: port 0x01f0 already claimed by ide0
VP_IDE: port 0x0170 already claimed by ide1
VP_IDE: neither IDE port enabled (BIOS)

(this last item could be it? Saw nothing in BIOS setup. The MB has VIA chips,
apparently)

Any ideas and help greatly appreciated. Google was not so informative.

Does include and @include interchangeable? Does the

Then whoever has "~/.xsession-errors (this one is 98 MB)" seems to have
a serious problem.

Also the :> trick is probably a good habit to get into.

A look at the KDE bug tracker at Debian reveals that this is a bug in
the arts suite. I've sorted this by adding "testing-proposed-updates"
to my apt.sources list, and updating. The following packages were
updated;

arts (1.5.9-1) to 1.5.9-1lenny1
libarts1c2a (1.5.9-1) to 1.5.9-1lenny1
libartsc0 (1.5.9-1) to 1.5.9-1lenny1

Notifications are now working again.

ipw3945 wireless gnome-network-manager

2008-04-02 Thread Chris Bannister
Hi,

Thought this might be handy for someone.

Subject: Re: wireless puzzle, Lenovo T60, 2.6.24

Hi Jim,

This is an increasingly common occurrence as people are migrating from the
etch kernel with the horrendously non-free ipw3945 driver to the shiny new
iwlwifi driver that is in the Debian kernels as of 2.6.23.

The cure is to edit /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules and remove the
line that is associating your wireless device with the ipw3945 driver.

Further instructions are at:

http://www.nanonanonano.net/linux/debian/ipw2iwl

or

http://wiki.debian.org/iwlwifi#head-c9ab967d827d9e5de52656b78edab5f349bc70f6

>udev: renamed network interface wmaster0 to wlan

BTW you don't want to rename wmaster0 -- just leave that one as it is. The
device to use is the wlan0 device.

For anyone else who is curious, it seems that network-manager doesn't like the
wlan0_rename device and refuses to work with it. Fixing up
your /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules file will allow
network-manager to once again manage your wireless device.

cheers
Stuart

:-)

Look at http://ftp-master.debian.org/testing/update_excuses.html

Search for xmms -- there are a few pointers to bug reports.

Also see what:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?which=pkg&data=xmms&sev-inc=critical&sev-inc=grave&sev-inc=serious

has to say.

Also there is a link which answers the question, "why is this package
not in testing yet" which unfortunately I don't have off the cuff[1],
but if you are running testing then you should at least know about them.

[1] Hopefully google will bring up the answer.

Sounds like Redhat + the db2 guys are hand in glove.

Does a search on google with, e.g, db2 Debian, as the search terms bring
up any thing interesting, or even db2 linux

Or probably even better: db2 linux shmmax :-)

No problem, hopefully you at least can sleep a little better. :-)

Hi guys:

Is there any good tools you can recommend to save the web pages?

When I find some pages that I'm interested in, or some good articles, I
would like to save it (the content, not the link url) on my system, so that
I can review it any time I want (when I'm offline or the URL to the articles
is disabled)

Thanks very much.
M.

I use Firefox's (Iceweasel's) "Save As..." feature. That can save text,
images, CSS and (probably) javascript.

Also, a caching proxy server such as wwwoffle will come in quite handy
when you want to save pages for offline viewing.

I'm using a Z61M, which is pretty similar to the T61, I think. I tried
the stock Debian kernel 2.6.24 plus firmware-iwlwifi from Sid but
although the wireless card does seem to be recognized it doesn't
connect. I spent several days wrestling with it but gave up in the end
and stayed with the older kernel.

If one shouldn't need to restart debian for the purging of
hal-device-manager to take effect, should I have run /etc/init.d/hal
restart ?

That seems reasonable...

When I see weird behavior of KDE with respect to devices (this happens
only very rarely), I do this:

- log out/close the KDE session
- restart udev
- restart dbus (which, among other things, restarts hal)
- log in/start KDE again

More generally speaking, you can use "checkrestart" from the
"debian-goodies" package to find out which services need to be restarted
after upgrades or other library-related changes to your system.

Thanks, I've just installed debian-goodies.

I filed a bug report on hal (#473755) that hal-device-manager should be
listed as a "conflicts" item.

Regards,

Arthur.
