Men. Men fasen vet hur. //-Job -Original Message- From: Magnus Ihse Bursie [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: den 3 augusti 2008 15:06 To: debian-user-swedish@lists.debian.org Subject: Trixa med ipchains... Re: Finally got Google Earth working on amd64
Patrick Wiseman wrote: Hello, all: A while back, there was some discussion here about Google Earth not working on amd64 systems. I decided to take another whack at it today, using make-googleearth-package. I had it download the latest GoogleEarth.bin, but then, trying to make the package, it threw lots of warnings at me, claimed Success! at the end, but in fact had failed to build a package. So, I decided just to go with 'sh GoogleEarth.bin' (as root) which installed Google Earth. So far, so good, but when I invoked googleearth, as an ordinary user, I got an authentication error. So, I googled that, and learned that I needed to install lib32nss-mdns. Did that, and now I have Google Earth - with all its cool new features - up and running; and I did NOT have to remove my ~/.googleearth directory (as one googled answer had suggested), so that all my saved sites were still listed. Patrick Patrick It seems like you had problems beyond those which I encountered during a clean install. I downloaded the GoogleEarthLinux.bin from the official site, sudo chmod +x GoogleEarthLinux.bin and sudo ./GoogleEarthLinux.bin. It installed just fine, and I am able to now run it as a ordinary user. I didn't get any of the dependencies that you described. This is on a pretty vanilla Lenny machine. On Sat Aug 02 2008 @ 2:09, JW wrote: I sometimes have a hard time figuring out why apt keeps certain packages back. For example the other day during an apt-get upgrade it was keeping back openoffice (and all the OO componant packages). It was not requiring any packages to be removed, it wasn't causing any major packages to be upgraded. How can I find out the *reason* why a package is kept back? A slightly different way to put what others have said: compare 'upgrade' and 'dist-upgrade' in 'man apt-get'. You will see that the upgrade command only upgrades things already on your system. It won't add new packages or remove old ones - even to upgrade an already installed package. When you get the kept back message, there is probably an upgrade that requires adding things and (or) removing things. Check what's going on, and then run 'apt-get dist-upgrade' to go ahead and do it. The 'dist-upgrade' command is poorly named, since it's not only for moving you from one major version of Debian to another (eg, Etch to Lenny). My guess would be that the newer version of OO required new packages that you didn't have installed yet. HTH, T signature.asc Description: Digital signature

chkrootkit infected ports 2881
My webserver system is actually a UML slice of a system at memset.co.uk and all it does is run Apache Tomcat and sshd and the stuff from memset - I thought it was pretty safe until I came back today and found my nightly email report from chkrootkit said: The following suspicious files and directories were found: /lib/init/rw/.ramfs INFECTED (PORTS: 2881) The .ramfs started appearing when I upgraded chkrootkit, so I never worried about it, but Friday night's INFECTED alert was a slap in the face with a wet fish. Saturday night's report went back to normal - no mention of the port. I scanned it from grc.com/x/portprobe and it came back as closed. The only mention I can find in the logs is: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# grep 2881 /var/log/* /var/log/setuid.today: 2881 660 1 root disk 0 Wed Apr 30 11:32:37 2008 /dev/rd/c1d30 r and that's a PID, not a port, right? So how bad does this look? Should I clean the system? If it is rooted, how can I tell what the security flaw was? re: how to close port 113
Install and run arno-iptables-firewall and tell it your internet port like eth0 or ppp0 and leave the rest of the defaults alone. Port 113 will be closed once this is done since one of the defaults with arno-iptables-firewall is to first deny all portsthen only open up those you specifically choose to open. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Mike, Alex others, Sorry for the broken thread. mb 2) That joule knows the route to cantor (via dalton) Just what I was missing; thanks! Now, where to specify this route? (1) up route add ... can not go in the eth0 stanza in /etc/network/interfaces because tun0 is configured after eth0. I wonder about adding a tun0 stanza to /etc/network/interfaces. (2) Perhaps a better candidate is the up command in /etc/openvpn/myvpn.conf. Keyboard problems
A long time ago, probably around March or so, my keyboard was fine. I use three keyboard layouts, and I found that Alt+Capslock keychord useful for switching between the three of them. It was so set up in the Gnome preferences, and all was well. At some point later during some upgrade (I track testing with an occasional non-critical unstable package), this merry arrangement was lost, and has been broken ever since. Now the Alt+Capslock keychord isn't recognised, but if I go into the Gnome preferences and make any modifications to the keychords use for switching keyboard layouts (e.g. click and unclick one of the many other keychords available) it works again, minus the minor discomfort that the keyboard capslock LED toggles when I do the Alt+Capslock keychord. This didn't happen before. I have seen similar behaviour in other GTK+ apps. In Xchat, for instance, I like Ctrl+Shift+n and C-S-p for switching between the previous and next tab (looks similar to Emacs keychords, and feels comfortable). However, I see a very similar behaviour in that restarting Xchat makes the keychords non-functional until I go again into the Xchat preferences and again make some random change to the keychords therein and undo it immediately. What's going on? It's freeze time now, and I want this problem to get fixed when lenny releases, since my mom will be using lenny on her laptop when it releases. I need help figuring out even what package to file a bug for. Thanks, - Jordi G. H. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
dhclient booting
Hi I'm using Debian Sid (kernel 2.6.26). I need to configure the eth0 so it uses the dhcp. In my case the dhclient never gets response at boot time. Later, I have to restart the service /etc/init.d/networking to get a IP. Sometimes I've also problems at this point. I don't not why but sometimes I've to restart this service several times in order to get a IP. May be it's because of the network module but it's also true that it works fine whenever I configure it to use static ip address. To configure the eth0 interface I write the following lines in the interfaces file: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp I'd appreciate any help. Thanks in advance. Have you tested the dhcp server with a different client; a different machine? Could be a problem with the network adapter or the module. Try a different adapter in the box? Try a different kernel? Try a different dhcp client? Have you any iptables rules set that could interfere? Did you check dmesg? Perhaps try to change the interface's mac address?
