Adding installed packages to menu
Hello. I am using Debian 4.0. How do I add installed packages to the Applications menu hierarchy? Synaptic installs then loses packages; it downloads and installs a package and its dependencies, and then, when queried, it shows the package and its dependancies to be installed, but it does not add the packages to the menu, and, in the Properties dialogue box in Synaptic, it shows the application category, where I assume that the application should be added to the Applications menu hierarchy; under the label of Section, on the Common tab, but it does not show anything like a path to the package executable file, so, basically, the package gets installed and then lost, so it cannot be used. I cannot find any means of doing something like right-clicking on the Applications label in the taskbar and it returning a menu with something like "Update menues", to add installed packages that have not been automatically added to the Applications menues. On another system, on which I have Ubuntu installed, when Ubuntu installs the package, it automatically adds it to the appropriate category in the Applications menu, so that the package can be used as soon as it is installed. Thank you in anticipation. -- Bret Busby Armadale West Australia .. running gedit as su brings error
Hello * Recently I've been getting an error I've not seen before in Gnome: when I run Gedit from a terminal as su, I get the following: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply.) gnome.org explanations relate to redhat, with no guidance for Debian based systems. I get the same thing when calling gnome's system log monitor, but not when I call Synaptic. Any clues out there? -- Dave signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Thanks. It looks like a useful resource, but after many reboots and much frustration, I still can't figure out what's going on. Following the suggestions from this page: http://people.freedesktop.org/~hughsient/quirk/quirk-suspend-advanced.html I built a kernel with POWER_TRACE enabled, but I don't get the sort of output described there. I only get one match for 'grep "hash matches"', to somewhere in power/main.c, not resume.c, and no 'device' matches. Using this feature is extremely frustrating, since it overwrites the rtc clock, which plays havoc with the fsck records. I've done a lot of trial and error, and it seems that even with a full system loaded, when it's brought up in single-user mode, it suspends/resumes fine, but if I then hit CTRL-D to enter normal mode and then suspend, resume will then fail. The module list seems to be more or less identical. I've tried removing and blacklisting many modules that I thought might be causing the problem, but I couldn't find anything that seemed to make a difference. I don't have infinite time or patience for the sort of testing that requires repeated reboots, so unless anyone has any more suggestions, I'll have to give up once again. How to change console font?
Hello folks, since many kernels ago I've used VGA console fonts that have been more pleasant than the standard 80x25 screen (mode 775). However, since my recent upgrade to lenny, this often doesn't work any more. Sometimes I get the font I want, sometimes I get the 80x25 one, and sometimes I get asked which mode I want (as if I had given the "vga=ask" boot option). I don't know why this is so erratic, but my system seems to slowly settle for the "ask" way of doing things. Well, I now want this to stop. A font that I really like is the one Knoppix uses. I think it is a framebuffer mode (it has the pengiun logo, too, which I don't care much for). How can I activate a mode like this? I'm running the 2.6.26-1-686 kernel from lenny. Speaking of kernel: I noticed that in lenny there aren't any -k7 kernels any more (or rather, the package is "for transition only"). Does this mean that the 686 and k7 branches have been merged? FYI: No X ... oops
Hi, (CCing Carlos Carrero Gutierrez since it may be his problem too) I did some minor system tweaks and rebooted... alas, X does not start on lenny. Careful reading of error message pointed me to missing /dev/agpgart. My dual boot system function works OK. So this is software issue. # modprobe intel-agp Hmmm... does not work. I did # depmod -a Then system reboot OK. I do not have time to find which package or action caused this trouble but if you find similar problem, recreating modules.dep and map files may be good idea. gnome-power-manager 2.22.1 can't suspend anymore
Hi all, After an upgrade, gnome-power-manager (version 2.22.1) can't suspend anymore, it does absolutely nothing. I supposed that what it does is call the dbus-send command. Therefore i tried suspending using that module explicitly: l...@olympe:~/bin$ dbus-send \ > --session \ > --dest=org.freedesktop.PowerManagement \ > --type=method_call \ > --print-reply \ > --reply-timeout=2000 \ > /org/freedesktop/PowerManagement \ > org.freedesktop.PowerManagement.Suspend method return sender=:1.0 -> dest=:1.13 reply_serial=2* * I made sure that i'm in the powerdev group. Any ideas? Cheers! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

Can I use these to identify the drives to be used in RAID pairs or for LLVM? Yes Well, that worked. And /etc/fstab is happy with /dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST3750640AS-5QD4Z81L-part1 /bottom ext3 defaults,auto,rw,nodev 0 0 but /boot/menu/grub is not happy with title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.18-6-amd64 (new) root/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST3750640AS-5QD4Z81L-part1 kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-6-amd64 root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST3750640AS-5QD4Z81L-part1 ro initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.18-6-amd64 Evidently, grub wants a different notation. The manual grup manual provides hd and fd notation, but the drives are sd, and, again, how would grub know which is which? Grub2 or Grub legacy? I have that trouble with USB disks, because Legacy wants root (x,y) hardcoded, none of that "by-id" stuff. So I switched to http://stmaarten.globat.com/~supergrubdisk.org/index.php "super grub disk" that allows me to state in menu.lst: title 2.6.26-1-686 di install findf /wd80_0jd-60.03 root$(out_device) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.26-1-686 root=LABEL=wd80_0jd-60.03 noapic apm=on vga=791 edd=off ddcon-1 network quiet initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.26-1-686 boot Key is that "findf", that looks for a file on any disk named "/wd80_0jd-60.03" and uses *that* disk as root. So in your case you would stick a file named /ata-ST3750640AS-5QD4Z81L-part1 on the disk labeled by that and SGD would stick the appropriate (x,y) in "out_device" and away you'd go. Give that a try. Googling for 'asus eee debian' seems to generate more hits than 'Samsung NC10-anyNet'. With respect to the asus, the first two search results seem to help answer your question. netbook for debian
Hi all, I am thinking of buying a netbook and would like to ask for opinions about good options for use with debian (preferably, alternatively Ubuntu). At the moment, I have been looking at Samsung NC10-anyNet KA06DE 10,2 Zoll WSVGA Netbook and Asus Eee PC 1000H 10 Zoll WSVGA Netbook but I would like to spend as little money as possible to get a reliable small laptop for presentations and for writing/surfing while on the road. thanks cheers Peter -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
