Problem while booting Debian with LVDS connector instead of VGA

2009-05-11 Thread User Debian

Hello,

I have a problem that I meet each time I boot Linux on an embedded
computer.

Configuration:
Embedded PC : ECM-LX800
Screen: LVDS (and not VGA)
Linux: Debian ETCH version 2.6.18-6-686

The problem comes after GRUB gives the instruction on which partition to
boot, BUT before that Linux kernel is loaded.

Noticed facts:
1- in short-cutting the VGA connector (i.e. pin 5 and 12 strapped
together), which simulates the presence of a VGA display attached to the
PC, Linux boots normally. The video signal is indeed sent to the LVDS
output.

2- Linux installation was proceeded with success, but with the VGA
connector connected to an external display as described in item 1.

3- When the VGA connector is free from any connector or from any strap
between pins 5 and 12, after GRUB has started: the display becomes then
black. Linux kernel is not loaded.

Question: Is there a configuration file to modify before the kernel is
loaded to tell Linux not to take into account the VGA connector, but
instead to send straight the video signal on the LVDS output, and then
to boot normally ?

Many thanks in advance,

Best regards,

Eric

Automatically repair configuration files

2009-05-11 Thread Angelin Lalev
One of my xen domains just crashed and left the ext3 filesystem of one
of my DomU debian installations in a horrible state. Subsequent fsck
deleted a bunch of files.
Now I want to fix a package or two by reinstalling the configurations.

aptitude purge package && aptitude install package

howewer seems to be the wrong approach. I got 'not reinstalling deleted
file' etc.

Is there a way to do it painlessly and automatically with aptitude ?

Are you using KDE/GDM, or XFCE? Automatically starting programs is
usually functionality that is invoked when you login, and the process
depends on the window environment you use. XFCE has Sessions and
Startup option in the settings manager (which ends up creating files in
~/.config/autostart).

Udev and device name unstable

2009-05-11 Thread T o n g
Hi,

My DVD device is used to be /dev/dvd or /dev/dvdrw. But today
after I rebooted my box, there are no /dev/dvd or /dev/dvdrw
devices any more. They are changed to /dev/dvd1 and /dev/dvdrw1
instead.

This make it very inconvenient for me, since all my scripts (and
fstab) are using hard-coded /dev/dvd. Why is My DVD device name
get changed this time? AFAIK, I didn't make any changes to the
system (package upgrading or config file changing).

Is there any way to tell udev to rescan the devices or specific
devices, so that I don't need to reboot to correct this?

Thanks

bug id number. If you just search for bugs in Gnucash the bug does
not appear to exist.

The bug was closed, and blocked, because it's been fixed upstream
in version 2.2.9 which was released by Gnucash in February of this
year.

Could you discuss how you're experiencing a new bug ("appeared a couple
of days ago") if you're not using gnucach in a new way? I'm sure there
are bugs in every piece of software I use. There are a couple of which
I am aware (if I care to think on it) but I have work-arounds or I
wouldn't have accepted the software for use and would have chosen a
different solution. I've never run into the "appeared a couple of days
ago" situation where the problem was a new bug; the problem has always
been in a different system (or is upstream of the keyboard :))

Doug.

Sorry I didn't answer this sooner, but I just now saw your message.

I didn't change anything other than running an apt-get update &&
apt-get upgrade. I was using Gnucash in exactly the same way I had for
last the year. It just started crashing after that when I would close
a tab that was created automatically during creating and posting
vendor invoices or customer bills.

New bug or old bug I don't know. All I know was it was new to me as
I'd been using Gnucash for more than a year to keep track of my
business and suddenly it just didn't work correctly any more.

But, that's all right. Just keep on blaming me. I'm surely at fault.
Hell, I had only been using Gnucash for a year. An imbecile like me
couldn't possibly have developed a stable work flow in that amount of
time. I probably did things differently inside of Gnucash every day
for that entire year

Starting Gnucash and closing tabs inside it are such technically
challenging tasks that users have a very difficult time doing them
correctly and that most likely explains why Gnucash suddenly began to
fail to open account files at startup too. It's gotta be the stupid
user's fault.

Funny ain't it though how the upstream version, 2.2.9, has a bug fix
for this. I guess they call it the "stupid-user patch", and that's why
they won't backport the patch to 2.2.6.

Just an update on this. I have asked on #gnucash if the patch for this

Since you only just created the user, I'd just go ahead and delete it

# cd /var/tmp

To be safe, I'd then examine the backup tarball to ensure that nothing
was removed accidentally, before deleting the tarball.

I've never used (or heard of) kuser to know why it created uid 500.

I usually (rightly or wrongly) vim /etc/passwd, then find / -uid 500 -exec
chmod 1000 "{}" \; and maybe the same if I have to change the gid.

Doug.

Let me see if I understand this correctly. Here's what it appears to me
that I should do.

First I"ll use vipw to edit /etc/passwd and vipw -s to edit the
shadowfile to change the uid.
Then edit with vigr and vigr -s /etc/group and the shadow file to
change the gid.

Now to change files out in the system:

find / -uid 500 -exec chmod 1000 "{}" \

Find files with a uid of 500 and execute the command chmod to change
the uid to 1001 (I'm 1000, so my daughter will be 1001).

And finally to change the files with a gid of 500 to 1001:

find / -gid 500 -exec chmod 1001 "{}" \

Then I should do usermod -u 1001
to change the user's uid.

Is order important here?

I'm tempted to try this instead of using deluser.

Actually, it's still in the installer. The debconf priority was lowered, but
you can still set the option in a preseed file, or by telling the installer
to lower the priority of debconf, or by passing priority=low to the
installer.

I had to figure that out on my own, long ago. What they did do, that wasn't
always trivial is modify many of the graphical "su" programs to use sudo
instead of "su", which helps bypass the need for a root password. Also, the
default for Aptitude::Get-Root-Command on debian is "su", while it's "sudo"
on ubuntu.

Also, the sudo on ubuntu seems to have its authentication timestamps tied to
the terminal/shell (I don't know which) that originally authenticated. So,
if you are using sudo in one terminal, then quickly start another terminal
and use sudo in that terminal, you will have to authenticate again.

That web page has becom inaccessible. I found another copy at http://
phpxref.org/docs/debian/ch09.en.html#anexampleforjapanese
That copy gave me the remaining clue I needed -- that it works in the
en_US.UTF-8 locale, but not the en_CA.UTF-8 locale, unless you add a line
to the ~/.scim/global or /etc/scim/global file to tell it en_CA.UTF-8 is
OK.

That example-for-japanese section doesn't seem to be available from the
more official-looking http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/

Has it been removed?

Section 9.7.9 of the http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/ has a
discussion of how to set up X for Japanese, which would seem to interact
at a different level of the system, and seems rather more complicated
than the one described in an-example-for-japanese.

I can suggest the zoneminder package, but I have very little experience with
it. It is only available in sid at this point.

just thought i finish off this thread, seeing as i started it.

for 2.6.29 >= you are going to need vmware server 2.x or > there are
patches for it to compile on 2.6.29 debian (-1 & -2).

problem is vmware has change the packaging, thus the make-vpkg doesn't
work (currently) with V2, i installed my copy in /opt/vmware and it ran
fine out of there.

As for trying to get windows 2000 to work on VB, I have had to upgrade
to windows 2003 and the move over was simple.

I would suggest any one going down this path to try out Virtualbox (or
maybe kvm/qemu) instead of VMware because of the pain you experience
with kernel updates :)

I do my in the filter command

filter passwd
(&(objectClass=posixAccount)(|(host=max.lan1.hme1.samad.com.au)(|(host=hme1.samad.com.au)(host=samad.com.au

and I set the host attribute as needed

this is my common-auth

auth [success=1 default=ignore] pam_unix2.so
auth required pam_ldap.so use_first_pass
auth required pam_permit.so

one thing to check is

getent passwd | sort

look for the userid and see if it pops up twice

I usually (rightly or wrongly) vim /etc/passwd, then find / -uid 500 -exec
chmod 1000 "{}" \; and maybe the same if I have to change the gid.

If the program isn't following the Debian Policy for users and group
ID ranges, then it's buggy.  Please do file a bug report about it;
this one is a serious policy violation since the users are being
created in the system range.

Doug.

Kuser is the KDE gui that's supposed to take the place of the command
line user management. It follows the Red Hat convention of users uid
starting at 500 instead of the Debian rule that starts them at 1000.
From what I've read, it's like deluser in that it only deletes the user
stuff in the home directory, so I still need to edit /etc/passwd,
/etc/group, /etc/shadow, etc. and delete the user's group. Or is there a
command to take care of those, too? If there is, I haven't found it yet.
Or will adduser overwrite the previous info when I add the new user of
the same name?

I've read of permission problems, boot problems, etc. caused by changing
uid so I'm a bit paranoid.

Thanks for reminding me to --backup.

pam, ldap: pam_groupdn ignored / not compatible with local users

2009-05-11 Thread Michael Marti

Dear list members

I am not sure if this is an Debian or ldap / pam issue. Please forgive
me if this is not the appropriate list to post.

I am trying to restrict access to our hosts by setting pam_groupdn and
pam_member_attribute in /etc/pam_ldap.conf.

Checking the logs of ldap show that pam indeed checks for membership
of the appropriate group:

May 11 11:55:01 golpweb slapd[23085]: conn=326 op=4 CMP
dn="cn=host_golpweb,ou=groups,dc=golp,dc=ist,dc=utl,dc=pt"
attr="memberUid"
May 11 11:55:01 golpweb slapd[23085]: conn=326 op=4 RESULT tag=111
err=5 text=

However the user is allowed to login in any case.

I found this post

which suggests that
  account sufficient pam_unix.so
should be removed from
/etc/pam.d/common-account

I tried this and it works. However

Removing pam_unix essentially inhibits locally created users,
including the root user.

One possible workaround would be to create all users in the ldap
database, again including the root user. I am just not feeling very
comfortable about the fact that root can only login if the ldap server
is in fact up and running. This seems especially paradox for the
server that runs slapd.

I am quite convinced that I am just missing something:
- Is there a way to restrict access for a certain group for ldap users
while /etc/passwd users have unrestricted access?
- In case pam_groupdn is not the way to go, can you recommend an
alternative?
- Right now I am using a custom ldap attribute called authorization
and a pam ldap search filter of "pam_filter
authorization=host.golpweb". This works, but is this a good approach?

Your comments are appreciated!

Best regards,
Michael Marti.

I have a script that checks for ppp session outages through syslog, I
only want to be notified of changes, i save output and then diff it with
new output. You could use something similiar, have a template of what
you don't want and filter it out, basically you need to post process
your output

#!/bin/bash

OLDF="/var/tmp/pppsession.old"
NEWF="/var/tmp/pppsession.new"

[ ! -e  "$OLDF" ] && > "$OLDF"

egrep "sydrt.. *ppp.*Connect.time" /var/log/syslog{.1,} > "$NEWF"

if ! diff "$OLDF" "$NEWF"
then
echo "---"
mv "$NEWF" "$OLDF"
cat "$OLDF"

This probably means that you don't have a database cluster ready. This is
usually done at the end of installing the postgresql package. This happens
to me when I install postgresql with a preseed file in the debian installer,
but I don't know why you have this problem.

To fix this, try this command (as root):

pg_createcluster 8.3 main --start

Just a guess here, but have a look at System>Preferences>Removable Drives

* Mount Removable drives when hot-plugged
* Mount removable media when inserted
* Browse removable media when inserted

And everything works fine here (lenny)

KDE update wants to remove konqueror and other packages

2009-05-11 Thread Edward C. Jones
I use the amd64 port of Debian. A while ago a big KDE update was put

remove the following packages:

kaudiocreator
kcontrol
kde-core
kdeaddons
kdebase
kdebase-bin-kde3
konq-plugins
konqueror
libgvfscommon0
quanta
superkaramba
xserver-xorg-video-cyrix
xserver-xorg-video-tga
xserver-xorg-video-vga

Removing konqueror, kdebase, kde-core, and kcontrol worries me. is this
upgrade safe to do?

I can recommend motion: 'aptitude show motion' for more information.
There is also a website at

I believe it will handle multiple cameras but cannot really comment on

From man 1 host:
host is a simple utility for performing DNS lookups.

So, it always uses DNS, not paying attention to your settings in
nsswitch.conf. In particular, it doesn't read /etc/hosts because it doesn't

This part I didn't really understand, sorry. Is this just Conky acting up?

For any file, right click, go to properies, go to the 'open with' tab.

I don't like desktop icons anyway, but I know what you mean. I am no expert,
but what I've observed seems to be that this happens whenever there is an
update that has anything to do with HAL or UDEV, and the only thing that I've
found that puts everything back in order is to reboot the system. Otherwise,
drives are not mounted automatically, and so I need to mount them manually
(right click in Nautilus, choose 'mount').

Keep in mind that Testing is going to be pretty volatile for the next while,
there are going to be hiccups.

I know what you mean, but in the end this is absolutlely free support from
people who do have other lives. I have learned that the quality and accuracy of
the question I ask is incredibly important.

If that frustration relates to waiting for Debian packages to download
after you've selected to install them: Consider maintaining a local mirror
(updated at night, mirrored with, say, debmirror), so that when you want to
install a package, usually you'll already have it locally.

No one seems to be reading that last line.

I'm not talking (just) about errors detected by the scripts. I'm talking
about changes to progress messages emitted by the scripts, mostly like the
way logcheck filters can suppress expected/recognized message in logs but
e-mail anything unexpected or unrecognized (except that logcheck reports
only the unexpected messages).

That's what I'm trying to do by wrapping them in a script that does what I
described--that suppresses all output when output from the underlying
script is as expected, but which generates output (all output from the
underlying script), and possibly returns a different exit code, when the
output of the underlying script isn't quite as expected.

Yes, I have a start.

Re: Unexplained changes in Gnome functionality

2009-05-11 Thread Andrew G
Thanks to those folk who responded. Much appreciated I was beginning to get
paranoid ... :-)

Conky is one issue and a rather minor one at that and rates as an
annoyance. It may just be that Gnome and Conky don't play nicely together,
because trying it out on Fluxbox, Xfce4 and even KDE all is fine. Gnome
however, well that is something I will continue to hack away at.

Thanks for all of the links provided Bob. That was for Conky and to be
fair, I should have said that I have been reasonably successful in getting
it to work as a consequence of Googling, however, as already stated, with
Gnome things are not well.

The other issues remain however, and those are the one's I have difficulty
Googling for. If it is true that these have already been reported as a bug,
then I'll wait for these to be fixed upstream.

Anyway, thanks for the comments/ input.

Because, as I wrote, "I want the output (the full output) only when the output
is different than expected."

The level of detail I want does not depend on just _how_ I run the scripts;
it depends on the results.

And, of course, I'm looking for a more general solution thatn modifying
each script.

Are you still talking in the context of Emacs? If so:

You won't need to reach the arrow keys, etc., once you've learned the
traditional Emacs movement keystrokes. (In fact, that would also apply to
vi.) But you need the control key in a reachable place so you can use
those traditional keystrokes (reasonably).

Note that you can type Esc as a prefix for Meta in place of pressing Alt as
a modifier for Meta.

> Even stuff like Ctrl-X Ctrl-F for frequently needed does not strike me

At least for that particular key combination, it sounds like you haven't tried
it enough times to notice how easy it gets.

For that one in particular, you can just roll your hand over the three keys.

That is, you don't have to do the sequence Control-down, x-down, x-up,
Control-up, Control-down, f-down, f-up, Control-up.

You can go: Control-down, x-down, f-down, Control-up, x-up, f-up; and that
can be done in one rolling motion in about 1/3 of a second.

Sure, not every keystroke combination is that easy, but many are easier than
they seem initially. If you want to and have time to give Emacs a fair
shake, use it long enough for you fingers to learn the more common
keystrokes, and then see if you like Emacs' style of commands or not.

I think your last 6 six words apply to Emacs too (as long as the control
key is in the right place, or another other place that's as convenient
for you).

I found the intrepid version, still probably not as new of a version as what
squeeze is but it should be better then the hardy one since hardy would be
about the same as etch.

 http://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/wmi-client

The only other way is to get the source and install that way. I don't think
you will benefit much by having it as a repo anyway since it doesn't seem to
be actively developed or ported.

I also found that it seems they are pulling it from jaunty as well and that
support for what it does will be built in to samba, I don't know when or it
may already be.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wmi/+bug/359637

Just trying to give ya a few ideas, I don't know what it is for or what it
does so I can't recommend a replacement.

Where to report lenny installer bug?

2009-05-11 Thread BranchingFactor
I have a server with a built-in LSI SAS 1068 controller and 2 SAS drives that
has been running amd64 etch for two years without any problems.  I recently
upgraded the system from etch to lenny (stable) and after the upgrade the
system would boot but could not find the disk drives.  I checked under /dev and
there were indeed no disk drives.  So I tried to install the current lenny 5.01
stable amd64-netinst from scratch and it also halted being unable to find any
disk drives.  I tried choosing each of the mpt drivers manually (including the
obvious candidate mptsas) but it didn't help.  Finally I tried the today's
05/11/09 squeeze amd64-netinst and it detected the disk drives without any
problems.  So to my mind there are two distinct (but related) bugs: (1) lenny
amd64-netinst doesn't detect the disk drives and (2) the etch-to-lenny upgrade
doesn't make sure that it can find the disk drives before allowing the upgrade
to go forward.

Where do I report these bugs?  Also how do I report these bugs since the system
is currently not working.   Thanks.

As opposed to KDE, Conky is a full-blown PITA to configure in Gnome.
It's apparently due to the different mechanism used to draw the desktop
background by these two desktop environments. This is especially
obvious when you try to get Conky display as a "transparent",
"backdrop" window, blending nicely into the background wallpaper. I
know, I've been using Conky both on KDE4.x (a
sorry excuse for a
DE, but Conky works a treat) and Gnome (never got Conky to work except
as
a stand-alone window with title bar and all - which has never been what
I wanted it for). Maybe that's the reason why many Gnomists use gkrellm
instead??

Isn't there an option/checkbox to "always open with" when you select
"Open with?" If so, you may be lucky digging through the settings in
Gnome configuration manager (or what the heck it's called), you know,
the program that manipulates the Gnome "registry".

Have already seen the same exact complaint (on this very same list if
I'm not mistaken), but can't really say anything, as it has never
happened to me (yet...)

I get the exact same feeling sometimes. It would seem we're both
missing something here. Yes, it may well be a secret code. Sheer,
untainted love for the distro apparently just isn't enough. It's also
been said "thou shalt never post during a weekend/holiday". Most Debian
gurus are not at their (work) computers then.

But other times, I get more answers than I'd ever hoped for, and very
pertinent, knowledgeable answers at that! So I'd say you can't really
generalize.

Good luck in solving your issues, and may a God, a Guru or a
forthcoming
debian update solve them for you very soon!

Safe change of uid

2009-05-11 Thread Elmer E. Dow
Just finished a fresh Lenny install and added an account for my daughter
-- and kuser assigned it uid 500 instead of 1001, which I must correct.
After looking at man pages and archives, I see that kuser in the past
has done well creating accounts but not modifying them. Is that still
true with the version used in Lenny? Is usermod a better option for
dealing with this situation or would deleting and recreating the account
-- either using kuser or userdel -- be the simplest and best method?

Please cc me as I am not currently subscribing to the list.

RE: wmi-client on Squeeze/Sid

2009-05-11 Thread George
I just wanted to add that you might want to check to see if they have it in
the jaunty repos as well. Jaunty is closer in release then hardy to
debian/squeeze

George in a pm , tell me that the package is available in the ubuntu repos:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/python/wmi-client

That works for me.
Thanks!

In addition to Bobs comments, perhaps you could have a bash at contacting the
package maintainer. I don't use squeeze but apt-cache show on etch says :

Maintainer: Bartosz Fenski

The "crap" response is possibly because no one else on this list has
experience of your problem or fully understands what you are getting at.
Maybe those who do are too busy. Who knows?

Personally, despite using Debian for several years, I had never even
heard of Conky until I saw your original posting. Also, as I do not use
Gnome, I cannot help you at all, but also hope someone else can.

Just thinking aloud really, have you tried googling:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=gnome+conky+problem
 or
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=gnome+conky+startup

Also, perhaps http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=513440 is
relevant.

I'm not sure. /etc/usr/share/i18n/charmaps/BIG5.gz has this
part.

% Begin of Eten extended charset. Mapping to "Private Use" segment.
% (Thanks to Aprhic Tech. CO., LTD.)
%
 /xc6/xa1
[...]

So, it seems that the mapping to PUA is intentional.

Convert HTML to PDF from CLI?

2009-05-11 Thread Dotan Cohen
I need to convert an HTML document to PDF from the CLI. Currently, I
am using a Firefox extension to do this:
http://torisugari.googlepages.com/commandlineprint2

However, this has many drawbacks and I would like to remove the
dependency on Firefox. These are other solutions that I have looked
into, and their problems:

1) CUPS
Prints the HTML, not the formatted output. It treats the whole document as text.

2) html2ps
Does not work with UTF-8 text! My native language cannot be
represented in Latin or Japanese characters.

3) Open Office
Requires either a macro or a wrapper script, both which are
problematic and change each new OOo version (which I update often).

4) convert (from imagemagick)
Does not support UTF-8!

5) gnome-web-print
Slight formating problems with HTML tables. However, it is my
runner-up so far as it is the only other solution that works at all.

Any other ideas? Is there a konqueror- or KDE way to do this? Am I
missing something obvious? Thanks!

Problem trying to reproduce audio in KDE

2009-05-11 Thread Daniel Bareiro
Hi all!

Using Twinkle 1.4.2, when trying to establish a connection against the
Asterisk server I obtain the following error message: "Critical: Cannot
open ALSA driver for PCM playback: Device or resource busy".

Audio config for Twinkle is:

Ring tone: ALSA: plughw:0,0: ICEnsemble ICE1724 (ICE1724)
Speaker: ALSA: plughw:0,0: ICEnsemble ICE1724 (ICE1724)
Microphone: ALSA: plughw:0,0: ICEnsemble ICE1724 (ICE1724)

Hardware card:

# lspci|grep audio
01:07.0 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies Inc. VT1720/24
[Envy24PT/HT] PCI Multi-Channel Audio Controller (rev 01)

In KDE Control Center the audio device is set to "Advanced Linux Sound
Architecture".

Is there some way to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Daniel

Unexplained changes in Gnome functionality

2009-05-11 Thread Andrew G
Hi list

Of late, Gnome has been behaving in unpredictable ways. I am using
testing/Squeeze and sometime over the last few weeks, a number of changes
have taken place that I am unable to reverse, and I would really appreciate
a bit of help from this list if that is not too much trouble.

In no order of priority:

1) When I right-click on an image file in my home directory in order to
access the properties of that image to add notes to it, the whole set of
desktop icons, including my home directory and Conky all disappear for a few
seconds and then re-appear (except when it does, Conky has been killed).
This happens all the time now and so on the multiple images I have which I
need to work with, I cannot access any of the notes pertaining to those
images because (a) to be able to do so seems to be specifically a Nautillus
or is it Metacity (?) functionality and unless I am in Gnome this function
doesn't even exist, and (b) there is no way that I can access the notes if
the system keeps throwing a wobbly like that.

2) When double-clicking on an image file, EOG is opened as the default image
viewer. It used to be, and I would prefer, GQView. However, I cannot see
anywhere in Gnome to set this as the default behaviour so I have to right
click and select GQView from the "open with" option. Not my preferred
action, but as I said, there isn't any (obvious) way around this.

3) Despite setting up a script to be called when Gnome starts up, Conky
appears briefly and then is replaced/ over-written by the desktop image. I
have set the script to sleep for about 10 seconds before being drawn, but
this just doesn't happen. I can only get Conky going if I manually call
it. Again, not a big issue, just a PITA really.

4) Finally, icons from removable media are not being placed on my desktop
like they used to. This may well have something to do with UDEV, but beyond
that I haven't a clue on what's up nor - even more critically - what I can
do about it.

I've asked this list for help before on a couple of these issues and the
response has been - with the exception of one kind soul who did respond -
crap. I don't know if there is a secret code or something that I am
supposed to be using to get some response? I am using a Debian system, the
Debian community is supposed to be helpful, I am asking questions politely
and giving as much info as possible. I have tried to help myself through
using Google, but in many instances if one doesn't know what one is looking
for, it becomes very hard to find an answer.

So, if some generous person on these Debian lists could lend me the benefit
of their experience and knowledge, that would be immense benefit and I would
be grateful.

Thanks in anticipation.

AG

This clearly is not an excel binary file, but some html-export form. You
can probably open this file in your browser. Apparently MS Excel has a
trick for importing these files, which oofice doesn't have. Try either
another spreadsheet program (kspread,...), or try to obtain a proper
binary xls, or better, and opendocument compliant file.

Sjoerd

It is a file generated by What's Up Gold that supposed to be a tabular
data. It can be viewed with MS Office 2003 as it should but not with OOo
3.0.1 from lenny-backports

TIA
