It says libc6-i386 *breaks* lib32asound2 <= 1.0.20-2. This means that
the version of lib32asound2 has to be higher than 1.0.20-2 for it to not
be broken. Lenny does not have a version higher than that, hence the
dependency problem.

I use following in lenny and works fine:
--
#!/bin/sh
gnome-terminal -e "mutt $@"
--

these terminal softwares act not exactly the same with -e and -x options.

With gnome-terminal:
  -e, --command=STRING
Execute the argument to this option inside the terminal.

   -x, --execute
Execute the remainder of the command line inside the terminal.

With xterm:
   -e program [ arguments ... ]
This option specifies the program (and its command line
arguments) to be run in the xterm window. It also sets the win‐
dow title and icon name to be the basename of the program
being executed if neither -T nor -n are given on the command
line. This must be the last option on the command line.

With UDE there is only a black field with an X for a cursor. If that's

UDE likes a three button mouse or a mouse with a wheel that also works as

This is almost certainly because the X Window environment is trying to
launch with a resolution your monitor doesn't support. The computer isn't
in sleep mode, only the monitor is. Try cycling through available
resolutions by pressing Ctrl-Alt-+ or Ctrl-Alt-- (+ or - on the numeric
keypad).

If that doesn't work, switch to a text console by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1, and
login normally, and edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to include only
resolutions that your monitor supports. If you don't have an xorg.conf
file, or if it's empty, try generating one with "Xorg -configure", and then
edit to remove resolutions you don't want.

Hope this helps!

That's very close to the script that is working for me (using
Iceweasel 3.0.6 on Lenny):

#!/bin/sh

prefixWords=

if [ -t 0 -a -t 1 ]
then
prefixWords=
else
prefixWords="xterm -e"
fi

set -x
$prefixWords mutt -- "$@"

I don't think your "exec" should cause a problem, but it may be worth
trying without it.

You may need the -- in case any of the arguments begins with '-'.
I can't think off-hand if that is likely.

By the way, the "if" tests whether you're running from a terminal
already, and opens mutt there if you are. Otherwise it fires up an
xterm.

You might get some more information by temporarily changing your xterm
line to

exec xterm -e bash -c "set -x; mutt $*; read -p 'Press enter to exit '"

this is almost certainly a message from the *monitor* and not from the
*computer*. The X window system has selected a configuration that does
not work with the monitor and the monitor, not recieving a usable
signal just goes to sleep.

as a starting point, try Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to a virtual

it up from there.

This error is because of something that happened before it, that usually
generates some output. You appear to have trimmed the output.

However, in general, you can bypass this error--"subprocess post-installation
script returned error"--by removing /var/lib/dpkg/info/$package.postinst.
There's also $package.preinst, $package.prerm, and $package.postrm.

These scripts to arbitrary setup/cleanup for a package, so removing/editing
them may leave your system in a crufty state. This can generally be ignored.
If you want to cleanup doing an install/purge cycle of the same package (once
your package management is healthy again) will generally work.

If the script has not been mangled by your system (I've seen fs corruption hit
these scripts before), a bug report may be in order. As you've noticed, one
of these scripts being bad can really gum-up apt/aptitude.

dpkg broken because of scilab-sivp

2009-09-04 Thread Mike P
Hi,

After dist-upgrade I am left with the package scilab-sivp which
refuses to be removed and also precludes me from installing anything
else. It seems that scilab-sivp depends on sivp package, but since
sivp is not installed dpkg fails. I can't either install sivp or
uninstall scilab-sivp. Is there a way to forcefully remove this
package? I tried dpkg with --force-all, but that didnt' help. Below is
the output I get when doing apt-get remove scilab-sivp (this is not
exactly what I get but similar to it - I copied it from another forum.
I'm using another computer since I can't install X because of this
problem).

Did anyone encounter this before? Does anyone have any suggetstions on
how to fix this?

Thanks in advance.

The problem is that ldconfig (and probably other important stuff) is
missing on your system; dpkg wants to call ldconfig before it installs
the libc6 package, therefore it is jammed. The next thing you can try is
to split the installation into two steps:

dpkg --unpack /var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.7-18_i386.deb
dpkg --configure libc6

That might work if "--unpack" does not require dpkg to run ldconfig; I
do not know the internals of dpkg well enough to judge the chances of
success.

If the above does not work then you may have to resort to manually
extracting the files contained in libc6_2.7-18_i386.deb:

http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/ch02.en.html#_extracting_package_without_dpkg

Alternatively you could try to fool dpkg by copying /bin/true to /sbin
and then rename the copy to "ldconfig". Again I would not dare to
predict the chances of success of this rather dirty trick.

Hello,
did just that, installing nvidia from Sid in Squeeze, without trouble.
Just used module-assistant to compile (but not install yet)
"nvidia-kernel-source" (manually choosen from Sid with aptitude), then
switch to a console. Uninstall old driver if necessary, install
nvidia-common and the newly compiled nvidia module. Then install all the
rest (nvidia-glx etc...) from Sid as desired.

Here it's:

aptitude search ~S~i~nnvidia
i nvidia-glx
i nvidia-glx-ia32
i nvidia-kernel-2.6.30.5-vanilla64
i nvidia-kernel-common
i nvidia-kernel-source
i A nvidia-libvdpau1
i nvidia-libvdpau1-ia32
i nvidia-settings
i nvidia-xconfig

Make sure xorg.conf is properly configured (driver "nvidia" in section
"Device"), and that's all.
If you want the -ia32 packages too, you'll have to play with aptitude to
prevent upgrade of your libc6, but nothing complicated.
I needed to reboot, reloading x wasn't enough (maybe because I was still
running on the previously half-installed nvidia from the infamous ".run").

Runs nicely, kde4 effects are on, Googleearth which wasn't working for
me lately is up and running too.

Try the jnc script wit a valid cafile : it will upload the pem, and so forth.
Then try with the pem file as done in the Perl scrip jnc.
On my side, in the jnc configuration file, the certfile option does not work as
expected (I wrote to the author), while the cafile option works.
So you may try.

I have a question about the installation of the binary nvidia driver. It
is a time ago that I used Debian and at that time you could install the
driver with apt-get directly from the non-free repository. I installed
testing/squeeze and sid in virtual machines and was surprised that I was
force to use module-assistant and so on. It is no problem at all.
1.) Is that the new default way of installing the nvidia driver coming
with Squeeze or is this a temporary situation because Squeeze is still
in testing state?
Squeeze used to have the kernel modules already compiled for 2.6.26 in
the non-free reps, I thought. They're not yet available for the new
2.6.30 kernel, which came in testing a few weeks ago. But, yes, I expect
that when squeeze gets stable, there will be precompiled modules in the
non-free reps.
2.) Is it possible to install the nvidia driver from Sid with
module-assistant? Apt-pinning is already configured.

Yes, no problem. Same kernel anyway.

That is OK at least.

I propose to try reinstalling libc6 2.7-18 with dpkg. The necessary .deb

r...@new-host:/home/bd#

Maybe I should run 'ldconfig' ? I wouldn't dare to test this without
more knowledge ; I wouldn't know what options and arguments to add.

If the .deb is missing then you can download it manually with your
favorite browser:

http://packages.debian.org/lenny/libc6

(Scroll down to the section "Download libc6" and click on the link for
 your architecture in the table.)

Here is what I get :

file /sbin/ldconfig
/sbin/ldconfig: ERROR: cannot open `/sbin/ldconfig' (No such file or directory)

dpkg -L libc6 | grep ldconfig
(it just returns the shell, nothing else)

It seems that dpkg is confused: It claims that libc6 version 2.7-18 is
installed without problems, but it does not know about /sbin/ldconfig
and the file itself is not present on your system.

r...@new-host:/home/bd# echo $PATH
/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin

That is OK at least.

I propose to try reinstalling libc6 2.7-18 with dpkg. The necessary .deb
file should still be in your apt cache, so this might work:

dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.7-18_*.deb

I will test this right away. Before doing this, so as to make sure I
won't forget later, I am pasting an output below :

b...@new-host:/var/cache/apt/archives$ ls -l libc6*
-r--r--r-- 1 root root 4437976 aoû 26 03:06 libc6_2.7-18_i386.deb
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3802420 aoû 17 00:05 libc6_2.9-25_i386.deb
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3802602 aoû 31 19:02 libc6_2.9-26_i386.deb
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3377088 jan 5 2009 libc6-dev_2.7-18_i386.deb
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4802506 aoû 17 00:05 libc6-dev_2.9-25_i386.deb
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4803706 aoû 31 19:02 libc6-dev_2.9-26_i386.deb
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1234710 aoû 17 00:05 libc6-i686_2.9-25_i386.deb
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1234902 aoû 31 19:02 libc6-i686_2.9-26_i386.deb

The file dates are interresting. I have several libc6 packages. The ones
dated aug 31 (libc6_2.9-26_i386.deb and libc6-i686_2.9-26_i386.deb) must
be the ones that tried to get install in the process of installing
'audacity 1.3.8 testing'. The install process clearly stated that it was
going to update my libc6. The only package dated aug 26 must be the one
that got installed in the process of setting up my new Lenny at that
date ; there was no associated dev package. I don't know what are
packages dated aug17, since it was a few days before I installed Lenny ;
at the time I was still running Sarge and, since I did not upgrade but
reformated and installed from scratch, I should have no remains from old
Sarge in my system. What is puzzling me is that the package dated aug 16
is of a newer version than the one dated aug 26. An other thing that
come to my attention is that all of these deb package files are 'rw',
except the first one that appears on the list, dated aug26, the date of
my Lenny install.

This being said, I will be trying to re-install libc6. Coming back soon.

If the .deb is missing then you can download it manually with your
favorite browser:

http://packages.debian.org/lenny/libc6

(Scroll down to the section "Download libc6" and click on the link for
 your architecture in the table.)

static ip address is being reset constantly

2009-09-04 Thread John O Laoi
Hello,
A question for networking gurus:
My ip address keeps on being set to null at my workplace.

I use my laptop at home and work.
At home, I use DHCP to get an ip address from my ISP. No problems.
At work, when I use
#dhclient eth0
it looks for DHCP leases but finds none.

So, I have a little script which I use to set a static address (I have
been given one to use):

ifconfig eth0 XXX.YYY.ZZZ.WWW netmask 255.255.255.0 up

route add default gw XXX.YYY.ZZZ.1

echo "nameserver XXX.YYY.AAA.BBB" >> /etc/resolv.conf

I run this script, but after approx 20 seconds the connection is gone
and when I run

# ifconfig eth0

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:15:ZZ:AA:BB:CC

  inet6 addr: fe71::205:c5ff:fecc:9284/64 Scope:Link

UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

  RX packets:5729 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

  TX packets:9435 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

  collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000

  RX bytes:4332002 (4.1 MiB) TX bytes:1830420 (1.7 MiB)

  Interrupt:18

Some daemon is resetting the NIC address to null.

I tried editing /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/init.d/networking restart.

I also ensured that my wireless was turn off.

What could be causing this?

Next you may try as root ncsvc directly with log_level 5 to see

What exactly do you need? If all you need is an MTA, I propose Postfix
or Exim. But since you brought Zimbra into play I suspect you need more
than plain mail delivery.

So, please be more specific about what you need besides SMTP. Do you
need POP/IMAP? Calendar functions? Shared mailboxes? Task tracking?

I had good experiences with Postfix and bad experiences with Qmail and I
don't like Sendmail. But it boils down to this: What MDA you use should
depend on the features you need. Other than is probably just a matter of
taste and trust.

Initial Installation -- Unknown Mode H 74.9KHZ V 59.9HZ Going to Sleep

2009-09-04 Thread Spam Catcher
Version: Debian 5.0.2a-i386

The Bug: Computer goes to sleep during the boot process.

During the initial boot, after the setup text has scrolled down the screen and
just before the logon
screen should appear, I receive the message:

UNKNOWN MODE
H 74.9KHZ V 59.9HZ
GOING TO SLEEP

After the message has been on the screen for maybe ten seconds, the screen goes
black, the computer
goes to sleep and that is all she wrote, the machine can only be awakened by
pushing the power
button to shut it off.

I uninstalled a working version of Debian 4.0 by deleting the partition on
which it was installed
and reinitialized the partition before performing a clean installation of
Debian 5.0.2. This is my
third clean installation of 5.0 with the same result. The first two
installations were performed
with two different CD's from two different downloads. This last attempt was
done using net-install.

My machine is dual boot with Ubuntu and Puppy (Both of which work fine).

Any suggestions on how to work through the initial triage of this bug?

George

It seems that dpkg is confused: It claims that libc6 version 2.7-18 is
installed without problems, but it does not know about /sbin/ldconfig
and the file itself is not present on your system.

> r...@new-host:/home/bd# echo $PATH

That is OK at least.

I propose to try reinstalling libc6 2.7-18 with dpkg. The necessary .deb
file should still be in your apt cache, so this might work:

dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/libc6_2.7-18_*.deb

If the .deb is missing then you can download it manually with your
favorite browser:

http://packages.debian.org/lenny/libc6

(Scroll down to the section "Download libc6" and click on the link for
 your architecture in the table.)

and "apt-get update" segfaults midway through downloading
packages.

I Googled around for similar problems, and I tried a few
suggestions, including deleting /var/cache/apt/*.bin and
increasing the cache size with

apt-get -o APT::Cache-Limit="5000" update

or the like. None of these has been successful.

Any suggestions for what I should try next?

Thanks.

SOLVED: Re: VMI support in lenny kernel 2.6.26-2-686

2009-09-04 Thread Justin The Cynical

Justin The Cynical wrote:

Short version:

Does a stock 2.6.26-2-686 32-bit lenny kernel have vmi support compiled in?

*snip*

Figured this out today.

Apparently VMWare, in their infinite wisdom, made VMI support depend on
the guest OS selection. As etch (the latest supported debian version)
didn't apparently have VMI support in the kernel, it's disabled and not
selectable.

Adding the VMI line in the VM config file didn't work for two reasons:

If I touched the VM config via the UI, it removed the added line as long
as it was set to debian4

I forgot to shut down the VM after making a change to the file. Note
for those who may wonder: Rebooting the guest alone doesn't work.

So, changing the guest OS setting to ubuntu and enabling the VMI option
let it work and I see the correct lines in dmesg now.

I don't know if it's due to the restarts or the setting changes, but my
load average dropped from an average of 4 to less than 2. Will have to
wait and see if it's stable with the setting at ubuntu (I don't know if
that option makes any real difference, or if it does, if ubuntu is close
enough to debian for it to work correctly).

It seems the package has been marked for installation, but was not
actually installed. Do you still have an entry for these packages in
your sources.list?

Marking the package for purge should do the trick:

# cat | dpkg --set-selections <
