dvb HVR900 unable to enumerate USB device on port

2009-09-09 Thread Emanoil Kotsev
Hi,

I am using lenny stable on a server like machine where I have dvb hvr900
installed. Yesterday I had to reboot and the message below makes it unable
to use the dvb device.
I recently upgraded to lates level of updates (dbus and udev among all)

The kernel it was working with was 2.6.28. I now tried the lates kernel but
with same result.

Does anybody know a nice fix for this.

Thanks in advance.

PS: This is the message:

There's always bug fixes as long as Lenny support is still available
AFAIK. If you what you meant upgrade (as in from 2.22 to 2.26), then
that is _upgrade_

Hi Ron,

Could you please add this check you're talking about to Cameron's script :-)

Hi Camaron

That's really nice. It gives what I'm looking for..BUT, I have other

Here's a script I just wrote to do what you want (it was an interesting
diversion).

For requirement #3, I'm not sure exactly what you wanted, so I took the
easy way out. I assumed you wanted the latest version for the
distribution you have in your /etc/apt/sources.list. To make the script
work, run apt-get update first so that your apt-cache has the latest
versions from your mirror.

netstat -lntup \
| awk '/^tcp/ { print $4"/"$1, $7 } /^udp/ { print $4"/"$1, $6 }' \
| sed -n 's|^[^ ]*:\([^ ]*\) \([0-9]*\)/.*|\1 \2|p' \
| while read port pid ; do
bin=$(readlink /proc/$pid/exe)
pkg=$(dpkg -S $bin | cut -d: -f1)
version=$(dpkg-query -W --showformat='${Version}' $pkg)
latest=$version
latest=$(apt-cache show -a $pkg | grep "^Version:" | { while
read x ver ; do
if dpkg --compare-versions $latest lt $ver ; then
latest=$ver
fi
done ; echo $latest; } )

echo -n "$bin on port $port from package $pkg (version

if [ $latest != $version ] ; then

Re: Configuring Tor and Privoxy in Squeeze [SOLVED]

2009-09-09 Thread Jivan Amara

I am pretty sure that you will not even haven to use the
   workaround if
you make the suggested change to /etc/hosts.

   Florian

Just an update - I deleted the redundant "localhost" entry in the
/etc/hosts file as suggested and accepted the Tor and Privoxy upgrade,
keeping my original config file when asked to keep/ update.

So far - all seems to be well.

You were a tremendous help with this issue and I am very grateful.

Thank you for sharing your expertise with me.

   Best wishes to you.

   AG

Hi guys, I just wanted to confirm the issue. I just performed a fresh
install. I used a USB boot disk with the 'debian-502-i386-netinst.iso'
image. I then set my /etc/apt/sources.list file to use 'testing' and
did a full safe-upgrade. When I installed Tor and Privoxy the same
issue was encountered and eliminating the localhost entry from the IPv6
::1 line in /etc/hosts resolved the issue.

I don't know much about IPv6. Who should be notified of this? Is this
a problem with the default /etc/hosts file or an issue with Privoxy's
defaults?

Here's a script I just wrote to do what you want (it was an interesting
diversion).

For requirement #3, I'm not sure exactly what you wanted, so I took the
easy way out. I assumed you wanted the latest version for the
distribution you have in your /etc/apt/sources.list. To make the script
work, run apt-get update first so that your apt-cache has the latest
versions from your mirror.

netstat -lntup \
| awk '/^tcp/ { print $4"/"$1, $7 } /^udp/ { print $4"/"$1, $6 }' \
| sed -n 's|^[^ ]*:\([^ ]*\) \([0-9]*\)/.*|\1 \2|p' \
| while read port pid ; do
bin=$(readlink /proc/$pid/exe)
pkg=$(dpkg -S $bin | cut -d: -f1)
version=$(dpkg-query -W --showformat='${Version}' $pkg)
latest=$version
latest=$(apt-cache show -a $pkg | grep "^Version:" | { while
read x ver ; do
if dpkg --compare-versions $latest lt $ver ; then
latest=$ver
fi
done ; echo $latest; } )

echo -n "$bin on port $port from package $pkg (version $version"
if [ $latest != $version ] ; then
echo -n ", $latest available"
fi
echo ")"
done

the only other way is to take apart the initrd and force the root fs to

looking for packages versions of running daemons

2009-09-09 Thread Israel Garcia
I have more than 10 debian (etch and lenny) servers and I want to find
a way to know remotely on every server:

1. Name of running daemons and ports (tcp/udp) they're using.
2. Version of the package (installed by APT) used by these daemons.
3. Version of the latest package (from deb mirros) used by these daemons.

I tried to make a script but didn't resolve my problem.

Can you help me?

[reformated to bottom post, please don't top post]

That is beacuse those two lines go in /etc/modprobe.d/ which deals with
modules (module probe). So they have no effect when it is not a module.

ncurses manpage describes TERMINFO and TERMINFO_DIRS environment variables
which override ncurses' search for terminal descriptions.

Setting TERMINFO, you can override tic's target for installing updated
terminal descriptions.

infocmp provides a copy of a terminal description which can be edited.

I /think/ it's due to the server wanting you to change your initial

You don't. You install a different OS which will replace Debian.

If you want to take Debian (really GRUB) out of the boot process, you can
zero-out your MBR. Something like:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1
should do that.

Neither of these actions will be much help if you can't figure out how to boot
from CD.

wait, i might have the answer, here:

except that i *did* make a separate, primary partition for /boot --

bootable? is that what i might have forgotten?

2009-09-09 Thread Robert P. J. Day

since i saved the output from "dpkg --get-selections" from the
previous install before reformatting the hard drive, i understood that
i could do a bare-bones install, then use "dpkg --set-selections" to
reproduce the package selection and install.

so, just for fun, i deselected every selection in the package groups
list, and now i'm being asked about where i want to install LILO.
why? if you choose to do a minimal install, is grub somehow
considered too fancy or optional? that's just weird. would selecting
one of those choices give me the grub option back again?

Re: Is there any way to turn off IPv6 in the stock Debian 2.6.30 kernel without recompiling?

2009-09-09 Thread Rick Thomas

Interestingly,

This didn't work on the Squeeze system, but it worked fine on a Lenny
system running a stock Lenny 2.6.26-2 kernel, which seems to have been
generated with ipv6 as a module.

Equally interestingly,

The Lenny system had no file called /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/*/
disable_ipv6

Is this new with 2.6.30 (Squeeze) kernels? Or is it a feature of
having ipv6 compiled in?

Very curious!

Had the same issue a while back already, but after a quick google
search I found something that was similar to what I did then.

alias net-pf-10 off
alias ipv6 off

Those two, and jam them in a /etc/modprobe.d/00ipv6disable or
something along those lines. Don't forget to reboot.

An other option is to build your own kernel, or fix the ipv6 setup

Well, Debian is not loaded at the moment you attempt to boot from the

It's up to your BIOS to boot on the CD.

Well, Debian is not loaded at the moment you attempt to boot from the
Windows CD.
It's up to your BIOS to boot on the CD.

Certainly this CD is not bootable.

during install, how can i back out of my LVM configuration?

2009-09-09 Thread Robert P. J. Day

almost assuredly a dumb question but i'm testing a 5.0.3 AMD install
and, early in the process, i selected the pre-configured multi-LV
partitioning (home, tmp, usr, var). at this point, it doesn't seem
like i can back up and manually modify that LVM partitioning scheme.
do i need to start the install over again? any attempt i make to
modify the LV layout tells me that the "lenny503" (my chosen VG name)
volume group is already in use. so ... restart install?

Traditionally, 5% of every file system is reserved for root to do with
as it pleases. In some filesystem (particularly older ones), all
sorts of things could go wonky whenever the system got 100% full.

Depending on the filesystem you're using, you can view or change that
reservation, though you may not really want to.

> and df commands?

Two things.

First, your du -sh * misses . files/directories. Depending on what's
going on, that could be significant. I always use [du -sh .] myself.
Well, strictly speaking, the . isn't necessary (at least with GNU df,
not sure about others any more), but my fingers have been using that
for years and it's ingrained.

Second, on unix-like systems, it's possible to have a file open and
deleted. It's common to do that with temp files, for instance. It
could be that some process is running that still has a large file
open, but there's no corresponding file name to find for du to find
and account for, but df knows is still taking up space.

Tools like lsof may help in cases like that. It has options to show
deleted files. Though, personally, I tend to do something like:
ls -l /proc/*/fd/* | grep deleted

Mostly, because I learned that before lsof was written and I've never
really bothered to learn the ins and outs of lsof.

df/du shows big difference of used space

2009-09-09 Thread niclasw

I have a 1500G hard drive, encrypted.
Different commands shows different usage:

As root, from root directory:
df -m
Filesystem 1M-blocks Used Available Use%
Mounted on

/dev/mapper/d 1390840 128452535665 98% /

That is 1284G used of 1391G which would be like 92%!
Not 98%
Why does it say 98%

du -sh *
adds up to about 933G

So the question is why the big difference of used space between df and du

du shows 933G used
df shows 1284G used

Can anyone explain the big difference, 350G, of used disk space between
du and df commands?

debian testing libdrm2 and fglrx - 2D operations extremely slow

2009-09-09 Thread ein gedanke
Hello everybody,

does anybody run the combination debian testing + fglrx graphics drivers?

I have the problem that when I upgrade libdrm2 to the version from the
testing repos, the 2D operations like moving and resizing of windows
are becoming extremely slow. For now (since weeks) I have to keep the
stable libdrm2 version, because this one works perfectly.

Any idea if this a bug or do I need to tweek some settings?

My graphics card is a ATI Mobility Radeon 2400 HD.

Yeah, I noticed.
I don't think this is a debian stock kernel tho..

lsmod |grep ipv[4-6]
(incase the ipv5 virus is spreading :P)

Jokes aside.. I got a feeling this is a hand made kernel, the ipv6
bit has (to what I could find in the change logs) not been jammed in
the kernel itself.

X11 is annoyed with ya for having ipv6 support, but dropping the
traffic at the kernel.. it does not understand what happend. X11 has
"native"ipv6 support (so it seems).

Give us a uname -a for the fun of it.

,Mark

If X11 is upset by turning off ipv6 at the kernel, why does it work
with "eth0" but not with "all" ??!!

And why is there no "DISPLAY" variable in the shell environment?

It's not a self-made kernel. I got it from the "testing" repo just a
couple of weeks ago.

lsmod | grep ipv

gives nothing.

Note that we have "CONFIG_IPV6=y" not "=m" in the config file...

Curiouser and curiouser!

Lenny Missing glx module

2009-09-09 Thread Curt Howland
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi. I've been having problems with my ati graphics, and tried the
proprietary drivers from AMD without success. However, when I went
back to the pre-compiled drivers available in Lenny, video sucked
even worse.

It seems in my attempt to take out the precompiled drivers to try the
ones from AMD, and then back, the "glx" module was lost:

/var/log/Xorg.o.log:
(II) LoadModule: "glx"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module glx
(II) UnloadModule: "glx"
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (module does not exist, 0)

Here are a couple of package searches that seemed appropriate, to see
if anything was obviously missing:

# dpkg -l | grep glx
ii fglrx-glx 1:8-12-4 proprietary libGL for the non-free
AMD/ATI r
ii libgl1-mesa-glx 7.0.3-7 A free implementation of the OpenGL
API -- G

# dpkg -l | grep mesa
ii libgl1-mesa-dri 7.0.3-7 A free implementation of the OpenGL API --
D
ii libgl1-mesa-glx 7.0.3-7 A free implementation of the OpenGL API --
G
ii libglu1-mesa7.0.3-7 The OpenGL utility library (GLU)
ii mesa-utils 7.0.3-7 Miscellaneous Mesa GL utilities

The various mesa utilities all report "extension "GLX" missing on
display ":0.0"" which is kind of obvious. But they worked the first
time I installed the non-free fglrx drivers.

I've looked for "missing dependencies" and found nothing obviously
missing, and apt would (I expect) have pointed out a gross error, so
obviously the missing glx driver isn't obvious.

Or at least not obvious to me.

Any suggestions as to packages I should have that I can verify?

That IP is probably just fine and a zeroconf address (rfc3927), most
definitely from avahi-autoipd and does not harm nor help. However, it's
quite strange that your eth0 does not have an ip address.

I suspect that the second command fails because you did not specify both
the device and the directory. AFAIK, only the complete form will make
mount ignore an rw option given in /etc/fstab:

mount -o ro,remount /dev/foo /

Internet interface problem

2009-09-09 Thread LM---

Hello everyone,

Here is what has been giving me (a 15 months-old user of
Debian-GNU-Linux) a headache since I installed Lenny over two months ago.
I also sport, as you can guess, KDE 3.5.10, any other version numbers of
programs involved I will let you know if you wish – that's as much for
software.

As far as hardware is concerned this desktop has an "Ethernet Pro 100
Intel Corp." NIC (which as far as I can make out is called throughout
“eth0”) AND a combo card USB/FireWire "Genesis Logic Inc." (which as far
as I can make out is called throughout “usb0”).

_The_ _problem_ :

The selection of the eth0 interface, into which the DSL cable coming
from the router is plugged does not take place. The system
“automatically” chooses usb0, which is not wired – unless I interfere
manually.

_Description_ _of_ _facts_ :

During booting, everything seems to go fine: I can read (as I always
read under etch, which is still on my desktop) the following:

DHCPOFFER from xxx.xxx.x.xxx
DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67
DHCPACK from xxx.xxx.x.xxx
bound to xxx(IP address of the "right" interface, eth0)xxx - renewal in
. seconds

done

And then, I don't know why, once the booting process is over and I log
in, everything goes wrong...

- Under KDE:
Situation # 1
KNetworkConf (in KDE ConfigCentre – Network parameters) does show eth0
_alone_ , but it is not given any IP address (although DHCP is the
preselectioned IP detection mode); nothing changes before detection is
restarted by deactivating then reactivating the interface in this module.

Situation #2
knetworkmanager, the applet I installed to ease connection and
deconnection to the network, is as much “confused”; after KDE starts it
“runs empty” can't/won't connect to any interface for about 20 seconds,
to finally systematically choose the wrong one: “usb0”

- Under command line:
if I go to the command line with tty1 --> log in --> turn to root --> to
enter instruction "ifconfig -a" , in the first 20 seconds I get this:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:02:b3:eb:d8:02

and later I get that:

TX packets:0 errors:16 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 lg file transmission:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

This confirms what I see under KDE:
something (what?) makes the system (which element, routine, module,
programme, package?) choose the wrong interface “usb0”.

How to solve this problem? This is the whole headache here!

My other problem is, I don't really know which other tests to carry out
to find out which setting I have to try with which programme, routine or
module or else... - before thinking of filling any bug report for a
particular package...

If you have ideas, I would be very thankful (if you need other
information, let me know, I'll get it for you).

Thanks very much in advance.

Ludo

saving package info for a fresh reinstall

2009-09-09 Thread Robert P. J. Day

hi, i want to save all my package info off to the side and do a
re-install of lenny so i can restructure my logical volumes. (i
realize i can do that manually with the various lvm commands but given
how much i want to move things around, and that this install is still
on a new server which isn't being used yet so i have no data to save,
it's just easier to reinstall).

i can see the idea of using dpkg with --get-selections and
--set-selections, and googling showed me this:

http://sunoano.name/ws/public_xhtml/debian_notes_cheat_sheets.html#get_and_or_set_list%20_of_installed_packages

but as i read that, i saw references to the two commands:

  debconf-get-selections
  debconf-set-selections

yet i see only the first of those two on this system (the set
variation). that seems odd -- i can't find the first one. am i
missing something obvious?

in any event, if i have little configuration information to
preserve, what's the simplest recipe to save my pkg info, then restore
it after a really basic fresh install? thanks.

You might want to look into Documentation/fault-injection in the linux-2.6
kernel source. I have never used it, nor have I used Xen, but perhaps that is
what you are needing.

Indeed. I suppose there are many people here who run Lenny and use mutt and

Let me understand. You now have a physical machine, running lenny, it
has a network cable connected to it, and you don't have internet?

If that's the case, then:

(assuming 192.168.1.50 is a free IP address in your LAN, and
192.168.1.100 is the IP of your local router LAN ip address)

# ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.50 netmask 255.255.255.0
# route add default gw 192.168.1.100

and then edit /etc/resolv.conf giving this as the first line:
nameserver 192.168.1.100

after that, you should have internet...

Look into PostgreSQL. http://www.postgresql.org/

It's in Debian, it's a *real* RDBMS (as opposed to that toy MySQL),
there's *excellent* documentation, active mailing lists full of very

I do not know if all this is possible with CUPS but as far as I know CUPS

Speaking of CUPS configuration: it would be best if you provide some

1) Print jobs from Windows get sent to the remote CUPS server
immediately, as long as the remote queue is accepting jobs.

2) Print jobs from CUPS clients stay in the local queue on the client
until the CUPS server is ready for it.

I would like CUPS clients to act more like the Windows clients. That
is, if the CUPS client isn't paused, attempt to send the whole job to
the remote queue (and if the remote queue isn't available, automatically
pause) and let the server worry about it exclusively. I see this as
solving two problems for me:

1) I want to be able to come home from class, send queued jobs from my
laptop to my print server, and as soon as the local queue is empty, stop
it and take off back to campus while the print server is still working
on committing those jobs to paper. My fiancee would also like to have
similar offline printing capabilities.

2) Centralize print management. I would like to be able to stop the
printer while still accepting jobs on the server, and have CUPS clients
not complain that the printer is stopped. Just send the print jobs and
let the server worry about it if it's still accepting jobs, I don't care
if the client is entirely unaware of the print job once it's sent to the
server. Eventually, I'd like to set hourly restrictions on this (since
one of our printers is extremely loud, it would be nice to stop that
printer at 10PM and start it at 6AM while still accepting jobs for the
next day at night).

So how do I get (Debian) CUPS clients printing to a Debian CUPS server
send off jobs to the CUPS server and forget about it, like other print
spoolers? Once it's sent to the remote system, I shouldn't need to be
tethered to the network.
