2009-11-11 Thread hadi motamedi
Dear All
Can you please do me favor and let me know how can I set my Debian server to
be automatically rebooted at pre-specified times each day ? Please be
informed that my Debian server version is read as "/proc/version : Debian
1:3.3.5-13" and I need it to be automatically rebooted at 2:00 A.M. each day
.
Let me thank you in advance

[OT] Old machine bsd vs. linux

2009-11-11 Thread Javier Vasquez
Hi,

Sorry to ask specially through this list...

I've been a linux user for around 10 years now, however lately some
800MHz Coppermine machines are not performing as well as they used to.

What I've read in this same list in the past, is that for the purpose
of still not letting them die, using openBSD, or perhaps freeBSD, is
the way to go.

However I was looking for benchmarks, or some data that would support
that idea. The only benchmarks based on data I found, are pretty old,
and pretty much based on networkin/servers, such as:

http://bulk.fefe.de/scalability

I don't use a desktop manager, but still use X with window manager
(fluxbox has been my choice for all these years).

If any one could share pointers to more up to date benchmarks, which
are as well oriented not just to networking and servers, it'd be
great. The idea is to find data supporting the initial idea of
freeBSD or openBSD providing better performance for old machines...
Well, that might be a wrong assumption to start with, but that's what
I've read...

Thanks,

--
Javier.

Re: Intel D945GSEJT LAN and Debian not working

2009-11-11 Thread brian

On Nov 11, 2009, at 11:55 AM, Alex Samad wrote:

can I suggest probably the easiest way to check is get a latest live

Yes !!! Problem solved. I am the proud owner of a Sid, or squeeze (?),
installation.

I'd like to take a little time to explain what I did for those who
fall into a similar situation.

I used this iso (The sid distro appears to use the 2.6.30 kernel):

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso

Overall I find the linking to all of the different versions somewhat
confusing. For example there is a link to weekly builds

which points to a directory tree which does not have anything in it.

The problem is that getting the right vmlinuz and initrd.gz is
important and I can't remember where I got them, because of all

the confusing links. I'm pretty sure it was from here:

/debian/dists/sid/main/installer-i386/current/images/hd-media

I used the sysconfig method on a flash stick, which was very easy and
worked exactly as appears in the installation

instructions.

Now here's the really important part:

I HAD TO UNPLUG THE POWER TO THE MOTHERBOARD.

Unbelievably the ethernet hardware seems to have gotten stuck and
power off-on using the power button did NOT fix it. The fact
that the ethernet could stay in such a state really points to how bad
a job someone did on the design of either the

motherboard or the LAN chip hardware.

The key to this problem, which I was slow to realize, was that lspci
did NOT show the LAN pci device.

So I physically disconnected power, plugged it back in, and booted
using the prepared filesystem.

Held my breath and the ethernet was detected !

Strangely the system seems to be referring to "squeeze" instead of sid
(?).

Well, that was a pain :-(

I don't know whether one of my other install attempts would have
worked had I realized that
the power needed to be physically disconnected. I have seen this
behavior on another computer and what is highly
coincidental is that it was also the ethernet which was having a
problem on that computer.

I have had some hiccups and have noticed that several times when re-
starting the installation I have to unplug the power.
Ah, quality Intel hardware. Well at least it _mostly_ worked out
of the box...

Brian

There seems to be a lack of coherent information about this stupid
chipset.

realtek has just joined ati as something I will never spend money on
again. Intel is about to join that list too.

Intel's web page for the board says that Ubuntu 8.10 works with the
"native" drivers. 8.10 is ancient, and is probably the
same vintage as Lenny, right ? So this thing should already be
working.

Any help _greatly_ appreciated (as you can tell by the time :-)

I was up late goofing around with this. Linux, still the same after
all these years :-(

I'd appreciate anyone suggesting how to go about it.

without spending all day relearning how to do it, the basic procedure
is to specify a new mode.

You can do this dynamically through xrandr at the command line. Read
the manpage for instructions on how to specify a new mode. I believe
it looks similar to the old ModeLine stuff from xorg.conf. Once you've
successfully added the mode through xrandr, you can select it and test
it out. If that works, then you'll want to take the mode line
specification and put it into xorg.conf to make it available to X on
startup.

I would like to add a few issues i've been facing...
I see that by default I can set up a resolution as high as 1280x
,
But for some reason the refresh rate for that resolution is not
available and the monitor starts flickering... So im stuck with 1024x768..

Anyway I can increase the resolution and yet not see flickering?

There are a couple of modeline calculators available on the net, and
I'm pretty sure there is one available in the standard repo, but I
don't recall the name.

hopefully that is enough to get you headed towards a solution.

You might want to check out apf-server and apf-client packages. I use these to
provide access between masqueraded systems using an intermediary system.
Server runs on the intermediary and client on the system to be connected to.
System connected _from_ connects to client through a port on the server.

Mixing /etc/init.d/networking and nm-applet generally causes a lot of problems.

radeon/radeonhd issues with xen domU

2009-11-11 Thread Dan McClung
I have been trying to export my ATI HD4350 graphics card to a domU.

The device is blocked in Dom0 using pciback along with a few other
devices and is visible in DomU. All other pci devices work fine.

I first tried the radeonhd driver version 1.2.5 (needed to run the newer
version from testing to support the 4350 card).

The tail end of the Xorg.0.log showed the following errors:
(--) RADEONHD(0): Detected an RV710 on an unidentified card
(II) RADEONHD(0): Mapped IO @ 0xfdee to 0xb7a8b000 (size 0x0001)

(II) RADEONHD(0): Query for AtomBIOS Teardown: failed
(II) UnloadModule: "radeonhd"
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:

When starting X, the display would flash 3 times.

I tried using the radeon driver, and received the following error in the
Xorg log:

(--) RADEONHD(0): Detected an RV710 on an unidentified card
(II) RADEONHD(0): Mapped IO @ 0xfdee to 0xb7a8b000 (size 0x0001)

Strangely enough, installing the proprietary drivers from ATI will allow
DomU to start up up and some applications will function but utilities
like flgrxinfo will error out. The end result was not stable.

Has anyone been able to get this to work? Any hints or ideas?

My goal is to run a mythtv frontend on the server, but would like to
keep it in a DomU so it does not interfere with other server operations.

Any help would be much appreciated.

sun-java6-plugin on amd64

2009-11-11 Thread Todd A. Jacobs
I can't seem to get the Java6 plugin working on my 64-bit
testing/unstable system. I have the following installed:

sun-java6-bin install
sun-java6-jre install
sun-java6-plugininstall

The Sun JVM seems to be the system default:

$ update-alternatives --display java
java - manual mode
 link currently points to /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java
/usr/bin/gij-4.2 - priority 42
/usr/bin/gij-4.3 - priority 43
/usr/bin/gij-4.4 - priority 1044
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java - priority 1061
 slave java.1.gz: /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/man/man1/java.1.gz
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java - priority 63
 slave java.1.gz: /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/man/man1/java.1.gz
/usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/jre/bin/java - priority 1043
 slave java.1.gz: /usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/man/man1/java.1.gz
Current `best' version is /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java.

and yet Iceweasel steadfastly refuses to acknowledge the java6 plugin in
about:plugins. Has anyone actually gotten the 64-bit java6 plugin to
work, and if so, what is the missing incantation?

Before doing that, take a look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /etc/X11/
xorg.conf, and see why the modes aren't available. If they're all
disabled due to "out of range", look at the "Configured Monitor" lines,
and possibly edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf "Monitor" section to broaden the
range(s) (but don't exceed the manufacturer's specs! If the laptop
display vertical range is 60 - 60, then perhaps 59 - 61 will fix it).

Could somebody help here please?

Try adding lenny repos in sources.list, apt-get update, then apt-get
dist-upgrade, then try apt-get upgrade..

After you succesfully upgrade, see if you can use apt-get autoremove,
and then comment out all etch entries in sources.list.

Re: Console Font Size?

2009-11-11 Thread jagginess

Thomas H. George wrote:

What is the relation between consolechars, charset and the
/etc/console-tools/config file?

On boot up the console characters are hard to read without glasses.
The command consolechars -d changes to a very bold font.
The man page for charset indicates the default font is cp427 or iso01.
The entries in /etc/console-tools/config set APP_CHAR_MAP=utf8 and
SCREEN_FONT=uni3-TerminusBold16

After experimenting I edited /etc/console-tools/config to change the
line

SCREEN_FONT=uni3-TerminusBold16

to

SCREEN_FONT=uni3-TerminusBold32x16

which gave me a console font I can read without glasses.

This works for me but I am left wondering about the different options.

Tom

You may like to reverse the settings to their defaults and first try
vga=ask (append to kernel boot line in grub config file).
Once you find the vga= option you like, you can then set it like this->
vga=0x (eg: if you typed 317 it would be vga=0x317).

This sets up the textual console resolution. You can then check out if
you need further refinement with the character sets..

without spending all day relearning how to do it, the basic procedure
is to specify a new mode.

You can do this dynamically through xrandr at the command line. Read
the manpage for instructions on how to specify a new mode. I believe
it looks similar to the old ModeLine stuff from xorg.conf. Once you've
successfully added the mode through xrandr, you can select it and test
it out. If that works, then you'll want to take the mode line
specification and put it into xorg.conf to make it available to X on
startup.

There are a couple of modeline calculators available on the net, and
I'm pretty sure there is one available in the standard repo, but I
don't recall the name.

hopefully that is enough to get you headed towards a solution.

Hi,
I have installed Debian Lenny on a Compaq Presario. The screen
resolution was automatically set to 1024x768.
This resolution seems to be the highest available based on the output of
'xrandr'.

The native screen resolution for my laptop is 1366x768.
I'd appreciate anyone suggesting how to go about it.
Thanking you all in advance.

guys I have taken a hybrid approach I have a couple of the broadcom-sta
I did a m-a -t build, which failed, I then cd
/usr/src/modules/broadcom-sta/amd64 (i think from memeory) then from
tmp/modules (this is where I had grabbed the latest broadcom-sta source
from broadcom) I copied over the directories amd64 to amd64 and i386 to
i386. The next step was to m-a -O -t build braodcom-sta and done I have
a deb package that I can install against .6.31 the tail versioning is
out but hell it works and its a deb package :)

I think you have read too much into my email, I have no experience with

I have no idea, but most people here aren't going to take the trouble
of looking up the specs for you. If you post the detailed specs, you
may get opinions on the Debian compatibility of particular HW
components.

Google "kde application autostart" - the first hit:

Create another user (better if from the command line; the Gnome applet
for creating users has some quirks). Does the new user have all the
panels in place?

I strongly suspect a wrong (or, more probably -- missing) xorg.conf is
the culprit. You'll either have to tinker with hal definition files
(the ones in xml format) or supply the supported resolutions via
xorg.conf. There's a plethora of template xorg.conf files on the
Internet, or you could boot a good live CD and copy the relevant lines
from its xorg.conf.

As far as I understand it, ulimit is per process. RSS only addresses how
much of the process is resident in RAM, and some googling suggests that
it may not actually be enforced in current kernels. I'd recommend -v to
set the total memory size, including RAM, swap, and so on.

Try without the "contrib" and "non-free" parts first. Those are not

You don't have to grant the remote server shell access if you don't want
to. You can use the port-forward feature of ssh to just create ports
without a shell with the -fN flag.

Also, the -R and -L flags look the same, but define which end the
traffic originates from. So, it's hard to say if you're using -R
correctly, or if you should be using -L instead.

This is untested, but should work to tunnel SMTP from localserver to
remoteserver when the connection is opened from the remoteserver side:

remoteserver$ ssh -fN -R25:localhost:25 localserver

to make it work securely, though, you need to do a few more things.

1. Add the "no-pty" option to your authorized_keys file so that no
shell is allowed for that key.

2. See whether you can limit the forwarded ports with "permitopen"
in authorized_keys. This may or may not work with -R; the man
page says it's for -L only.

3. Consider creating a non-root user for ports that don't require
binding to privileged ports. For example, you could tunnel git on
port 9418 as some other user rather than root.

If you want a real SSH-based VPN, and are willing to pay the encryption
overhead, you can investigate SSH + TUN forwardings. See these articles
as a starting point:

http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/539
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SSH_VPN
http://www.gentoo-wiki.info/HOWTO_VPN_over_SSH_and_tun

Hope that helps.

You can remove those restrictions by adding "contrib non-free" after
"main" in each of your sources lines. But you shouldn't need to do that
for xchat and epic4, because they are in "main".

You might also be interested in the debian-multimedia and

Ah, sounds like your resolution is set incorrectly. You could try
"dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" and see if that fixes it. If not, stop
X by issuing this command:

/etc/init.d/gdm stop

Then log in at the command line and issue this command:

X -configure

That should create an xorg.conf file for you. Then:

/etc/init.d/gdm start

and see if things are any better.

Certainly that condition exists on my system
and certainly it isn't from me editing resolv.conf.
This is the entire content of /etc/resolv.conf.

# Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)

Given the number of cooks [softwares] in the

spice ["nameserver 127.0.0.1"] came to be in
the soup [network configuration].

In any case, the number [ip address] for
directory assistance [dns of the ISP] is
somewhere in the kitchen [system]. According
to my understanding, this number was brought
by a well known delivery service [dhcp3-client].

Nobody can suggest where to read the extant
number [ip address] for directory assistance
[dns of the ISP]?

Pardon the analogy [humour].

Thanks,... Peter E.

weird networking issue on lenny!

2009-11-11 Thread Zachary Uram
Greetings!

I just did fresh install of lenny, I have a DSL modem and run a static
IP setup so I manually set up my route (DHCP was enabled by default)
by killing the dhclient process and then setting up /etc/resolv.conf
and /etc/network/interfaces and doing "/etc/init.d/networking restart"
and it went fine, but suddenly after 30 minutes I suddenly lost
internet connectivity and here is what I saw then:

# route -n

As you can see there is no longer a routing table!

You don't have any mirror listed, no wonder you cannot find packages.
Try adding a line like

deb http://ftp.br.debian.org/debian/ lenny main contrib non-free

to that file, substituting for a mirror close to you.

OK, I think I got it. That is, I now have six files, one of which is
the ISO of 148.1 MB. But after the download finished I got:

"Images offered by
`http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/amd64/iso-cd/debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso':"

Being unsure what to do, I did nothing. After a while I got:

"Number of image to download: "

Apparently the "Images offered by ..." line was supposed to be followed
by a list of images from which I could choose one. But that doesn't
make any sense if it just finished downloading the ISO that I typed at
.

some lenny problems

2009-11-11 Thread Zachary Uram
Ok I just did a fresh install of lenny (so using default gnome
settings, default metacity settings, default X settings) and I have 3
problems.

1) There is no bottom gnome panel only the top panel. I want to add
the bottom panel which shows the minimized windows, the virtual
workspaces, etc.. And I want this to show up in every session.

2) Common packages I could find easily in Ubuntu 9.04 are not in my
package caches (and yes I just ran apt-get update) such as xchat and
epic4. I know Debian is more restrictive but what can I add to my

Huh, if you blacklist Realtek (Realtek chips are found almost
everywhere...), Intel and Ati, given that Ati belongs to AMD, it's
likely you won't spend much money on computers in the future :-)

maybe that's not a bad thing. Then I won't be up late at night. :-)

Intel's web page for the board says that Ubuntu 8.10 works with the
"native" drivers. 8.10 is ancient, and is probably the
same vintage as Lenny, right ? So this thing should already be working.

No. 8.10 stands for 2008, October, whereas Lenny was released in
February, 2009. That being said, Lenny is the most vintage of these
distros (shipping with 2.6.26, whereas 8.10 is shipping 2.6.27).

So, more confusing. Supposedly 8.10 works, so that would lead me to
believe that Lenny should work. It seems hard to believe that the driver
broke from .26 to .27. More than likely the #...@!^^ wankers at realtek
rev'ed the chip and so what I have is misidentified or has some other
ridiculous problem, i.e. it is not the same chip that the MB originally
started shipping with. This is a common problem.

Realtek is everywhere and yet, miraculously, I seem to be the only one
with this problem. I found one other site, also trying to install Lenny,
and they apparently fixed it with r8138. That didn't work for me.

And really, no one seems to know what's going on, including realtek, who's
website says it works, but fails to tell you which version. Very
frustrating. And unfortunately, after many years of linux, still very
common.

Given this .local info, I would avoid using it.

I have just found the workaround that I had read in my notes. It is
only applicable if you are running a DNS server for .local. In that
case, the DNS entry must come before the two mDNS entries in the hosts
line in /etc/nsswitch.conf. I am not sure whether this would prevent
avahi from appending .local to a hostname in syslog though! Could the
devs not have chosen .avahi or .bonjour or .mdns as a default?

oh, where to begin.

the realtek page (curse them ) says that the kerner driver is just
fine.

of course, the #...@$! idiots don't tell you which version of the kernel

Then there's the problem that using the netinst install doesn't give

I was hoping someone could identify a disty that would work for sure

I assume from your post that kernels >= 2.26.30 work ?

There seems to be a lack of coherent information about this stupid

realtek has just joined ati as something I will never spend money on

Intel's web page for the board says that Ubuntu 8.10 works with the

Do you get something like

udev: missing sysfs features; please update the kernel or
disable the kernel's CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED option; udev may fail to
work correctly

in your boot messages or logs?

If so I had a similar delay and i fixed it recompiling a new kernel

have you tried getting the realtek driver and using it. I had to do this
for 2.6.25-~29 until the mainline r8169 came up to speed

Intel D945GSEJT LAN and Debian not working

2009-11-11 Thread brian

It's an Atom board known as "Johnstown".

Can't get the ethernet to work (it's a gigE, Realtek), the rest of the
installation seems to work fine.

I was hoping someone else on the list has this board and has found a
debian install iso which will work.

5.03 most definitely does not. It installs the r8169 driver, which
seems to be broken.

Any help _greatly_ appreciated (as you can tell by the time :-)

Brian

You're trying to make it complicated when it isn't. You don't need to
download anything. Just install the "jigdo-file" package then run the
command:

   jigdo-lite

jigdo does the rest. There may be one or two initial questions about
preferred locations but just hitting return should work. It's easier
than bittorrent.
