This is by far the best app for converting 3gp files:
http://www.miksoft.net/mobileMediaConverter.htm

It's not cli, it's ugly, but it works better than anything else. The
sound qualit of the resulting files is excellent, and it will work in
batch.

I also have been using debian-multimedia for LAME mp3 and am very thankful
for its existence. The file was a quicktime .mov file they made with their
own camera and is on their machine so unfortunately I cannot get a snippet
of it.

FWIW, I did 2 fresh Lenny installs on my friend's machine, the first one
with debian-multimedia which resulted in the .mov file not playing back in
mplayer, and a subsequent second Lenny install, identical to the first
except without the debian-multimedia, in which the .mov file played great in
mplayer. I don't know if it's a bug or not, but has anyone else had this
specific problem (with .mov files in mplayer)? If so I will gladly file the
bug report. I've read about several different bugs with mplayer on various
forums but have not seen this one specifically.

Thank you,
Mark

Nope. There are a few ways to deal with this; Joe mentioned a common
one, which is to have your password stored in a file that's outside of
your website directory.

Bear in mind, many, many people and businesses have successfully built
websites using both their own servers and host providers. So for
almost any "wait, that can't be right, because it causes this
problem!" situation - there's almost certainly a readily available
solution.

Given that this is a Debian list, I should mention that Pair runs
FreeBSD systems, not Linux.

*snip*

In my experience paying for web hosting - you do get what you pay for.
Pair is not the cheapest host in the business, but they have
had phenomenal uptimes, excellent support, and provide reasonable
access to the system. I've been burned by cheap web hosts before -
including a company that cancelled a friend's account because he'd
typed "ls /etc" and they found it in his bash history file. Wow. I'm
not saying that you can't find a good host cheaper than Pair - for me
personally, Pair is cheap enough and good enough that I haven't looked
further since I started using them. I should also note that I'm only
running a personal vanity site, not a business or service. And if
you're not based in the US, I don't know how much sense it makes to
work with a US host provider.

I've never installed mysqladmin, so I can't speak to that. I've
always just used command line tools for mySQL.

Anyway, I don't mean to sound like an advertisement for one particular
company. I'm sure there are many reputable, reliable hosting
companies out there. It does sound like you need a fair amount of
information to do this for the first time, so you might want to choose
a host provider that explicitly includes support as part of the deal.

There are a few different ways to deal with not exposing your password
to the world, but one thing I do want to note: in a hosted situation,
you should have a user home directory in addition to the directory for
your website. If you need a file to be inaccessible from the web, you
can just put it in your home directory. There's no need for root
level permissions.

A. If the bug is related to packaging you can send me a bug report,
otherwise the best is to contact the upstream author."

Yes, that's the one I use. There is progress with java in Epiphany. The
java test page...

http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp?detect=jre&try=1

does work as expected now where it didn't a short time ago. I'm happy

though it is, and I hear grumbling about that on a regular basis.. :)

That's not good news. Which plugin? The Sun non-free one? There is one

OK, I'll tell you what. Since I know that a newer version which fixes
at least one bug I'm experiencing is waiting in the wings in Sid,
and since Squeeze hasn't frozen yet, I'll wait until the new version
migrates to Squeeze. (Let's hope that Squeeze doesn't freeze first.)

No kidding!

How do I get back to what I had?
Anybody?

So what happened is that starting with 4.7.0 mc supports skins.

There are 5 skins shipped with mc:

darkfar - black background
default - the old default: blue background
double-lines - like default but with double lines. Couldn't get that to
work

featured - like double-lines
gotar - black backround

I found 2 skins googling:

elite_commander - unreadable with black backround
bluemoon - black background.

I found no skins anywhere with my choice for years: white background.

So it's back to the old blue default because it takes days of diddling
to make up a skin.

Hi,
I was just download and open elite_commander skin.
I think if in:

_default_=gray;

change to white
[core]
_default_=white;
it should be white background.
I don't have mc so I can't try, but it seems easy to modified.

Aufs + samba not playing nicely in squeeze/sid

2010-04-17 Thread Jon mailinglists
Hi,

I've got a server on which I'm merging a few different directories
using aufs. I then share the merged folder in samba (as read only) so
I easily can look at the files from my workstation. But my workstation
crashes when I try to access files in the share in question. It also
spews out messages to dmesg (attached).

Looks like a kernel bug (or cifs/aufs module to be more precise) but
I'm not sure if it's a user error so I'm trying here first.

And about my system:

uname -a
Linux hostname 2.6.32-trunk-686 #1 SMP Sun Jan 10 06:32:16 UTC 2010
i686 GNU/Linux

cat /etc/debian_version
squeeze/sid

It's the debian kernel linux-image-2.6.32-trunk-686.

Any more info needed?

Timezones for Kontact seriously broken in Lenny

2010-04-17 Thread John A. Sullivan III
Hello, all. We have some clients eager to migrate from
Exchange/Outlook/Windows to Debian Lenny. Zimbra is working well on the
back end but is lacking as an Outlook replacement - great web interface
but still lacking some essential features. Evolution does not support
Address Books from Zimbra so that leaves us with Kontact. Kontact is
great except it seems seriously broken in several regards specifically
Korganizer. The KDE response is to upgrade to KDE4. Since we are on
Lenny, we are on KDE 3.5 and we'd like to keep it that way until KDE4
matures a bit more. How are Lenny users handling the crippling bugs? I
did not see anything in backports. Here's what we are seeing:

Timezones: Any appointments synchronized with Korganizer from Zimbra are
interpreted as UTC. Thus, all appointments are offset by our offset
from UTC. This is the bug which is rendering it unusable and is
apparently well known. I can't believe this is broken in a production
system.

Malformed URIs: Calendar requests via IMAP are requesting
myserver.mycompany.com:993Calender instead of
myserver.mycompany.com:993/Calender. We can work around this by using
webdav instead.

This is crippling us on a potentially huge Lenny deployment. Any know
fixes? Thanks - John

No, that's not correct. If the mobo DIMM slots are colored, you put

I believe different manufactures follow different conventions. For
some it's the two in same-color slots, for others in different-color

One, I work with hardware everyday and I've assembled more computers

Checking the wiki page again, it says,

"If the motherboard has two pairs of differently colored DIMM sockets

one can place a matched pair of memory modules in bank 0, but a
different-capacity pair of modules in bank 1, as long as they are of the
same speed."

Which says to me that if I have a board with 4 memory slots of which 2
are colored light-blue and 2 are colored black and 2 1GB modules of
identical speed, then I place both modules in either the light-blue
slots of the black slots.

Checking the manual of this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131636

it colors the DIMM slots blue/black/blue/black

labeling them DIMM_A1,DIMM_A2,DIMM_B1,DIMM_B2

and says that 2 DIMM modules can be placed either in A1 + B1 or in A2 +
B2, that is either in the 2 blue slots or in the 2 black slots, but
preferably in the 2 blue slots.

I've noticed the same things. I've stuck with epiphany because it worked
so well for so long but there are times recently when I need to use
iceweasel. I think it's the switch from the gecko backend to webkit that
broke a lot of things that used to work well.

I keep hoping that these problems can be resolved but time will tell. I
use unstable and downloading works fine but java apps that use the
plugin still don't work.

Your message initially didn't have that link; so thanks for providing
 it.

I think I over-reacted because I'm used to seeing people give
lists of alleged problems in software, but without enough details to
allow anybody else to confirm them, or investigate.
Sometimes you'll get lucky and somebody else will report it; but posting
to the users mailing list thing like:

* I use software XX but it is buggy and now I use something else

Just feels like a random rant, not the start of a useful or productive
discussion. (Which is pretty much what you did.)

> As for the reply bug, I just noticed it today; and no, I haven't

Indeed. Still if it affects one site it probably affects others,
unless it is caused by a particularly malformed
HTML/javascript/whatever that site uses behind the scenes.

On that basis its useful to report, if only so that other users
of that particular site can see it.

Even without that perhaps saving the page, and associated media
to your local machine might still trigger it. If that is the case you
can trim down the page(s) a lot and see if you can find out what causes
it yourself. (Assuming you're familiar with HTML & so on.)

No kidding!

How do I get back to what I had?
Anybody?

So what happened is that starting with 4.7.0 mc supports skins.

There are 5 skins shipped with mc:

darkfar - black background
default - the old default: blue background
double-lines - like default but with double lines. Couldn't get that to work
featured - like double-lines
gotar - black backround

I found 2 skins googling:

elite_commander - unreadable with black backround
bluemoon - black background.

I found no skins anywhere with my choice for years: white background.

So it's back to the old blue default because it takes days of diddling
to make up a skin.

As for the download problem, I didn't report a bug because someone else
got there first: Debian bug report number 563056. I just checked back
and it has been marked "resolved", but apparently that version has not
yet migrated to Squeeze, which is what I am running.

As for the reply bug, I just noticed it today; and no, I haven't
reported a bug yet. I'm not sure I'm going to. I already said why.
I'm not going to give out my password. And unless the package maintainer
happens to have a Wow e-mail account, which is unlikely, they won't
be able to reproduce the problem. And then some wise guy like you

do you expect us to fix it?" I do not hesitate to report bugs.
If you don't believe me, search the bug database for my e-mail id.

Mmm, those instructions seems pretty old (2006-2007), maybe something has
changed since then.

> That didn't help either, keep getting "Cannot find codec 'libamr_nb' in

Two more hints:

1/ The error message you got was:

***
(...)
Cannot find codec for audio format 0x726D6173.
Read DOCS/HTML/en/codecs.html!
***

So follow their wise advice and take a look into that doc file.

2/ Dunno if you already installed the mpeg/ffmpeg versions from "debian-
multimedia" repo, as Ron already pointed out. That could be another thing
you can test.

There are more special characters which may need escaping. The following
example may be unnecessarily verbose for a throw-away script but it
tries to address the escaping problem properly and adds some
abstraction.

#!/bin/sh

input="input"
output="output"
sub1=$1
sub2=$2

quote_basic_regexp ()   { sed -e 's,[][\^$.*],\\&,g'; }
quote_replace_string () { sed -e 's,[&\],\\&,g'; }
quote_solidus (){ sed -e 's,/,\\&,g'; }

replace_literal_string () {
local regexp=$(printf '%s\n' "$1" | quote_basic_regexp | \
quote_solidus)
local replace=$(printf '%s\n' "$2" | quote_replace_string | \
quote_solidus)
sed -e "s/$regexp/$replace/g"
}

replace_literal_string PLACEHOLDER1 "$sub1" < "$input" | \
replace_literal_string PLACEHOLDER2 "$sub2" > "$output"

I've also used debian-multimedia for years without any problems. That's
not to say problems don't crop up but I haven't noticed. I dunno where
to report bugs against debian-multimedia but I suspect Christian

"They" probably haven't fixed it since it hasn't been reported as

   Either:

* Say nothing.

* Rant in an unproductive fashion, without sufficient details to

* Report a bug.

Anything else is a waste of your time, and ours. (e.g. "File

Happily it seems that you're content using Iceweasel, so pragmatically

I installed the amrnb package from the multimedia repo, but it didn't
help. I also installed the OpenCORE AMR libraries to /usr/local/lib as
recommended on the Mplayer site:

MPlayer can use the OpenCORE AMR libraries through FFmpeg.
Download the libraries for AMR-NB and AMR-WB from the
opencore-amr project and install them according to the
instructions on that page.
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/codec-installation.html
http://sourceforge.net/projects/opencore-amr/

But that didn't help. Also built ffmpeg from source as suggested here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=178455
and did this:

svn checkout svn://svn.mplayerhq.hu/ffmpeg/trunk ffmpeg
./configure --enable-libopencore-amrnb --enable-version3
make
make install

That didn't help either, keep getting "Cannot find codec 'libamr_nb' in
libavcodec..." still searching around the www to see what I can find.

Single quotes tells the shell to use the contents verbatim. Double quotes
allows the shell to interpolate variables. Note that sed does not get
to see the quotes at all (see below).

Yes...

This is a red herring. The -e argument allows you to introduce multiple
operations. Omit it and you get just a single shot (as you
demonstrate). Sed doesn't see the quotation marks at all, so you're
slightly on the wrong track with your reasoning.

> The only workaround I've found is to do the substitutions in two passes:

> sed s/SUB1/$1/ < input > temp
> sed s/SUB2/$2/ < temp > output

Which is almost exactly the same as this:

sed "s/SUB1/$1/" < input > temp
sed "s/SUB2/$2/" < temp > output

*except* that in my case the $1 and $2 can contain whitespace, but in
yours they can't. (In neither case can they contain "/".)

> Since I'm not using multiple argument to sed, I don't have to quote
> the arg.

As explained above, this is incorrect.

> I suppose I could pipe one sed command to another rather than using

Given the knowledge constraints under which you're working, I'm curious
to understand why you prefer a temporary file to a pipe.

> Any ideas on a cleaner approach on how to do this, either by getting this
> right or using an alternative method, are welcome [...]

sed -e "s/PLACEHOLDER1/$1/" -e "s/PLACEHOLDER2/$2/" output

perl -pe 'BEGIN {($a,$b)=splice(@ARGV,0,2)}
s/PLACEHOLDER1/$a/;s/PLACEHOLDER2/$b/' "$1" "$2" output

The potential advantage of the perl version is that the variable can
contain not only whitespace but also "/" characters. I don't know if
this is an issue.

Epiphany browser continues to get worse and worse

2010-04-17 Thread Stephen Powell
I am continuing to suffer the on-going de-volution of the once-decent
epiphany browser under Debian Squeeze. First they broke file
downloading. They still haven't fixed that. I'll bet it's been
six months or more.

Now I can't reply to any e-mails using the Wow basic
webmail client. I click on the "Reply" button, the mail compose
screen appears for a fraction of a second, then I get this error
screen. The problem does not occur with iceweasel. The problem is
very recent. It broke with a recent
"aptitude update;aptitude full-upgrade" sequence. I suppose I could
report a bug, but I'm not about to give them my password so they
can logon as me to test it! I'm going back to iceweasel again.
I kept using epiphany so I would know when the file download feature
got fixed. Instead they broke something else.

So I now know how to use reportbug abd how to manouever it and use it.
Thus seems to confirm that the other two I attempted to submit yesterday got

(I have two, actually three instances of lenny)
That said, I may as well go about re-submitting the one from yesterday.

Normally, when a script in /etc/kernel/*/ fails, and the
script name matches a package name (extlinux in this case), the
script was installed by that package. Since you're using grub as
your bootloader, and since extlinux was designed for use with
the syslinux boot loader, I'm not sure why you have it installed in
the first place. That could be your problem.

You can run into that sort of problem if your pattern to replace contains any
forward slashes (/) in it. If you need to such an expansion, you probably
want to do it in two passes, first doing a / to \/ substitution on your
replacement strings, then inserting them into your final expression:

patb=`echo $2 | sed 's,/,\/,'`

Re: How to migrate my localhost php site to my ISP - Was: willing to learn php basics

That is normal. If your users can enter data, then the script must have
at least some write privileges on the database.

In the real world, you deal with the security aspect by placing the
password (and database and user names) in a second php script outside
the web server's document root, so that no web request can return it.
Apache will normally be configured not to allow download of scripts,
even when a user knows the right filename, but placing the script
outside the directory tree which apache can reach adds to security. You
'require' this mini-script in the main php script, which must of course
be placed within the web document tree. While apache cannot reach
outside its docroot, php/perl/etc. can, though with the same permissions
that apache runs under.

In order to achieve this, you need write access to that directory tree
above apache's docroot, with the ability to set permissions correctly.
From what you say, it does not seem that you have that with your
current ISP. You would seem to need to spend some money, even before you
are sure you will have the access you need.

"The 1&1 60-Day Money Back Guarantee applies to the Instant Mail and
Beginner packages as well as all shared hosting, Virtual Server and
eShop packages. You will receive a full refund of the fees if you are
not completely satisfied within 60 days' of the activation of your
package. Guarantee starts on the date of initial registration of the

"There is no refund for packages ordered with the software bundle,

any unused bandwidth. 1&1 considers that customers upgrading from an
existing package have already experienced the 60-Day Money Back

In practice, you'll need to pay a small amount for shipping of
documentation and to register at least one domain name, so you wouldn't
get much back out of two months' payment, but you wouldn't be tied into
a long contract.

I'm on the Business Pro package, at GBP 15 per month, most of which I
can charge on to customers. There's a Business at GBP 9 per month, about
the same as your Swiss one, which offers two 100MB MySQL databases plus
perl and PHP. It doesn't have ssh access to the server, but I've very
rarely used that. It also doesn't have cron scripts, but I've never used
them. If you need something timed, you can write it into a script and
call it as a web page on a timed basis from outside.

As I recall, you don't need ssh access to install phpmyadmin, it's just
another web script. You FTP the files to a suitable directory. You need
to give phpmyadmin the local address and port number of the MySQL
server. Certainly, you are free to create users at various privilege
levels, you have full control of the databases. You can then logon to
phpmyadmin using any of the MySQL user credentials, though normally you
will be doing administration and you will use the root logon.

Well, after 3 days' work I finally got it running. I'll write it all up
in detail on my website but the essential steps were as follows.

1. delete the default gateway (ip route del default).
2. make a new gateway (route add default gw

Quite simple, but there were some traps.

a. the I had to use was not the one given to me for Windows
and the Mac, but rather the one that shows up with "ip route show" i.e.
the one that is next to dev ppp0.

b. the browser (firefox) needs to be running before doing the above,
otherwise it doesn't find anything.

c. to start the connection to the server, "pon must be
done as root even if you are in the dip group.

I'm sure lots of other people would have had no difficulty with this,
but I thought it was worth reporting it for the benefit of anyone who
knows as little about route stuff as I do.

That looks like http://bugs.debian.org/549976, which seems be harmless.

Which version of package extlinux do you have installed? This looks like
http://bugs.debian.org/574071, which was fixed in version 2:3.85+dfsg-2.

If your package manager is jammed by this problem then you can try to
download the .deb for the newest version of extlinux from
http://packages.debian.org/extlinux and then install it directly with
"dpkg -i".

No, they are currently properly installed for dual channel operation.

There is no 3rd channel. There are 3 DIMM slots, but slots 2 and 3 are part
of the same channel. The nForce2 northbridge chip for some odd reason was
designed to support 1 DIMM on channel 0 and 2 DIMMs on channel 1.

As long as you have a DIMM installed in slot 1 and a DIMM installed in
either or both of slots 2 and 3, you are running in dual channel mode.

# of DIMM slots does not equal # of memory bus channels. As an example, the
Compaq Proliant 5000 quad Pentium Pro server had 16 DIMM slots but only a
single memory "channel". Back then they called it a "bus", which is the
proper electrical engineering term. "Channel" didn't come along until much
later when vendors started installing multiple memory buses. I guess the
marketing folks thought "channel" sounded better than "bus".

I don't have any /etc/kernel/postrm.d/extlinux or
/etc/kernel/postinst.d/extlinux, so I don't know what they do, but yours are
evidently broken.

If they are scripts you wrote, fix them.

If they are from a Debian package, it might be appropriate to file a bug
against that package.

O.k. So now you are *not getting* the GRUB menu, right?

By reading the data you provided, I'd say your BIOS is setup to boot at
first the disk that holds windows OS and so windows loads "directly".

If that is true, I will make you some suggestions/ways to solve/bypass
this.

(Disclaimer: all of these options are "risky" -as so is any action that
involve the bootloader- so please, if in doubt, *ask someone in the know*
to make the job and before taking any step keep your "invaluable" data in
a safe place)

1/ Install GRUB into the MBR of the first disk.

Caution! this will cause the current bootloader of the disk (that is,
windows bootloader) will be *lost* and GRUB will take control of the
booting process... it should be no problem but when windows comes into
play, one never knows.

2/ Create a new partition into the hard disk holding windows OS to
install GRUB there. Then, you can mark that partition with the "bootable
flag". In theory, this will pass the boot control to GRUB and you could
boot any OS from there.

3/ Change the BIOS order of the hard disk booting devices.

Caution! This can mess a bit the current setup of your debian lenny
install, I am not sure what will be the results.

By selecting as hard disk "first boot device" the disk where you have
installed Debian lenny, this will make you boot directly into Debian.
Then you can:

a) Install GRUB into the hard disk MBR
b) Install GRUB into the first sector of a partition

(note: probably you already have GRUB installed somewhere in the hard
drive)

And... I think I have no more advices to handle this situation, if
someone wants to add another one, I'm sure the OP will thank any idea O:-)

Greetings,

I too have an Abit NF7 (tho' not an -S). The memory was installed by the
shop where I bought the components of my computer. (I was intending to build
it myself and he didn't trust me with the CPU or memory!!) He told me taht I
had dual channel memory installed, and would need to replace both 256 Mb
sticks if I increased the memory capacity.

I have never seen any sign of dual channel operation. (Tho' I didn't know what
to look for, which hardly helped!)

dmidecode gives:

Would I be correct in taking this to mean that the memory modules appear to
be incorrectly installed, and that I could improve my memory performance by
moving one of the modules that dual channel functions? And also, if that
does not give me enough improvement (which it almost certainly won't), I
could add another module in the third channel, which would not necessarily
need to be the same size as the other two?

TIA
Lisi

I just did a search on packages.debian.org for "xen", and came up
with these:

This appears to be the Xen hypervisor and a Dom0-enabled
kernel.

2010-04-17 Thread IAN DELANEY

Hello, me again. I got impatient and wanted to file more bugs.

The topic is either how do you use reportbug, or I have a bug about reportbug.
It's version 3.8. The following data will detail my system.

I'm trying to install a vm in lenny, and it's a very futile task. I just get
bugs.
I invoked reportbug, got to the second last section, to supply a full
description of the bug.
How do you use bugreport at this point?

Now I have two distiinct instances of lenny. one 32 bit, the other a 64 bit.
I'm in the 32 bit version which is used in the live xen cd.
I've installed reportbug, and tried using it a couple of times. I get to this
point,

Subject: virtinst: description mmm gg
Package: virtinst
Version: 0.400.0-7
Severity: serious
Justification: 2

*** Please type your report below this line ***

oh, i may have just figured it out. It's using vim. Must be different version
perhaps. Once entered the data, I couldn't see how to save and exit. I'm used
to nano.
The other instance uses nano as a text editor to enter the description.' No
matter, let's persevere since I've started.

The bug report:

live...@xenalive:~$ reportbug

Detected character set: UTF-8
Please change your locale if this is incorrect.

Using 'IAN DELANEY ' as your from address.

Maintainer for virtinst is 'Debian Libvirt Maintainers

Looking up dependencies of virtinst...

Subject: virtinst or libvirt loses contact with console during installation
Package: virtinst
Version: 0.400.0-7
Severity: serious
Justification: 1

*** Please type your report below this line ***
This may be important, you decide. To me, it stops the use of the package in
any way in its tracks.

ok, the fiasco of installing in lenny continues.
Boot into xen, take a system such as hardy or karmic on cd or dvd, put it in
the drive, invole virt-manager, invoke new vm bringing virtinst into play, use
the provided wizzard screens and setup install of a new vm using the cd drive,
begin an install of the new vm.

The problem WAS bug number 519809. We've progressed from there, bringing in
the backport versions of libvirt0 and libvirt-bin, version 0.7.6-1~bp. Citing
a late entry of that bug,

"can confirm - I backported libvirt 0.6.1-1 from squeeze to lenny.
The VNC console immediately works with virt-manager 0.6.0-6 after
passing the wizard for creating a new guest."

Well the reporter stopped at that point.
Continuing the install we find a separate new bug.
Initially, the install produces an effective vnc console.
Half way through the install, the vnc console faults, producing the error
message along the lines,

TCP/IP error: Console lost contact or got disconnected from the console.

Selecting the Hardware tab of the console, the selection
Serial 0
initially reported Source path:/dev/pts0 (or 2)
Some how the packages changed their mind about what to allocate the console to
under /dev.
Once faulted, it reads
Serial 0: Source path:/dev/pts/1,
a non existant char file! So this is the cause of the bug.
The developer's place to fix it.

In addition, as an attempt to salvage the install, I got the vm to be saved,
hoping to restore it from the point on reboot. The save began to take place,
then hangs, preventing the vm to be shutdown or paused, becomes frozen. A
reboot is required to acess the vm again.
Rationale, if a save can be made, at may be able to be restored on an existing
/dev/pts/ file, and the install of the vm may perhaps then be completed.

My take on this, seeing the content of the bug number 519809, libvirt had to be
fixed to get past this point. The problem may again be libvirt, however, the
nature of the problem is a missing char device file. On beginning the install,
the packages concerned call upon an existing /dev/pts file, then switch to a
new one which need be created. This suggests kernel involvement, or some
feature that invokes udev to dynamically create a file with makedev or mknod.

I hope to see a reply to the bug in due course

Trunk version of linux-image ISSUE

2010-04-17 Thread JW Foster
I', sent this previously but so far no reply. Can anyone tell me how to
get rid of this issue. I did an update & the trunk version of
linux-image was installed as the upgraded version. A few weeks later I
tried to install the newer regular version & after a few attempts it
finally installed & grub configured it. However it is not properly
configured according to the installer as it keeps trying to configure
the non-trunk version every time I do an update. Now I've been able to
select the non-trunk version & have my system running it, even though
it's not properly configured. I tried to then remove the trunk ver. &
this is the error message I get.

Being a Supermicro server, I doubt it's a "fakeraid" card O:-)

OTOH, a fakeraid won't see a big disk of 4 TiB, it would detect/treat

Yes, that tends to be the better approach. Either "ext2" or "ext3" are
the recommended filesystems for GRUB.

Ah, you're right. Then that shouldn't be the problem.

I would try, at first place, to make the required partitions from a
Gparted LiveCD (System Rescue or similar) before installing the system to

Which Apaptec model, specifically? Some of the Adaptec SATA cards are
fakeraid. I want to know if your card is fakeraid or real RAID. That may
have bearing on this issue.

I've never run into these issues because I intentionally avoid them. I
always create a small /boot of about 100MB at the start of the disk and
stick the bootloader in the MBR. Every BIOS can handle bootstrapping such a
setup.

I thought the OP originally said he has a separate small /boot, so I'm still
not sure what his exact issue is. Thus what I'm trying to nail down exactly
which Adaptec HBA he's got.

On all nForce2 boards DIMM1 is a channel and DIMM2 and DIMM3 are the other
channel. Why nVidia did this I can only guess. It is indeed a strange
design, very asymmetric. I'm guessing they intended a 4 slot design but ran
into impedance or drive quality issues during verification and had to drop
one socket to get the northbridge to run reliably. That's just a guess.
I'm also guessing most nForce2 owners put sticks in slot 1 and 2 and left
slot 3 empty. That's what I did, with two 256s and later two 512s. I have
the Biostar M7NCD Pro model.

Populating slot 3 won't disable dual channel operation. What happens is you
don't get full bandwidth for memory addresses beyond [slot 1 capacity * 2]
when you stick more total memory in slots 2+3 than you have in slot 1, such
as 1GB in slot 1 and 2GB in slot 2+3, e.g. three 1GB DIMMS. The last gig of
address space exists in the second channel so bandwidth to it is limited to
single DIMM throughput.

It's almost irrelevant anyway on a socket A platform because the processor
bus is limited to 3.2GB/s unless overclocked. Each memory channel is
3.2GB/s if using DDR 400 for 6.4GB/s total in dual channel mode. AGP and
PCI devices are never going to be able to DMA 3.2GB/s while the CPU is at
full load because applications just aren't written in a way to enable such a
thing, even with heavy multitasking. Thus, any excess bandwidth over about
4GB/s won't be noticed. On systems using CPUs with integrated memory
controllers, such as most of the 64bit AMDs and the Intel Core I5/I7, dual
(triple) channel operation needs to be enabled. One will likely see
performance degradation if using a single DIMM on such machines if running
applications that actually take advantage of or stress the machines. If you
don't notice single channel performance degradation on one of these systems
then I'd say you bought too much machine for the intended use.

> No more Abit now though, sigh.

+1 Abit was awesome.

Luckily I acquired the Abit legend, the BP6. Still have it. And it's still
running after all these years. I have dual Celeron 366s in it running at
512MHz. Works great as a personal MX SMTP/IMAP/web/webmail/Samba/DNS
resolver running Lenny and a kernel.org kernel. I dropped in a SATA card
and a 500GB WD a while back to freshen it up a bit. The Abit mobo is over
10 years old now and provides more performance than the server really needs
for most things, idle most of the time. The only really taxing thing it
does is an occasional kernel build and imagemagick operations on photos
going on the website. I will admit it's a bit slow here. It runs 25
minutes for kernel builds with my config using CONCURRENCT_LEVEL=3.
(without concurrency it takes about 40-45 mins)

It's interesting that two platforms I've owned both came up in this thread,
nForce2 and Abit. Some planets must be aligned or something. :)

/etc/bash_completion ?

2010-04-17 Thread Aioanei Rares

Howdy,

Following this link (
http://www.debian-administration.org/article/An_introduction_to_bash_completion_part_1
) and if I type at the terminal '. /etc/bash_completion' everything
works top-notch. However, if I put the above command in the global
.profile or in my user's profile, after typing my user/pass in gdm, I
get errors. If I put '. /etc/bash_completion' in ~/.profile, I get the
'your session lasted less than 10 seconds' and the reason is 'cannot
open /etc/bash_completion' . If I put the command in /etc/profile, I get
some errors about mismatched parantheses. Am I doing something wrong?
It's annoying to type '. /etc/bash_profile' everytime. Thanks in advance.

Yours,

I am no expert on this issue but this is my common sense.

Do not use such untrusted servers for the sensitive data.

You can put measures to remote break-in etc. But whoever have local
hysical access can get tou your data on the system.

(I do not quite understand what kind of server arrangement ...
virtualized or rack moiunted dedicated server... either way, it is the
same thing.)

Well, once booted, and if they have some kind of hardware access before
you boot into your system, you are doomed. Because they can have
backdoor access.

All these methods protect against casual break-in but if system is run
under some super-server like xen etc., your security measure stopps
there.

If they have monitoring system pre-installed, ... even with this
protection is no good.

Keep sensitive data where you have full trust. The remote untrusted
servers are good for web gateway only. But even for that, you should
have some trust to them.

Servers usually have the option of some sort of remote access
controller, which allows you to do things to the server as if you were
sitting at the console, such as power off, power on, and to see a remote
console to do things like make BIOS changes, or in your case, to enter a
password to decrypt the disk.

Re: How to migrate my localhost php site to my ISP - Was: willing to learn php basics

'$apt-cache search PHP' gives too many results for a choice.

You want to do
# apt-get install php5 php-mysql apache2

Which will also pull in the php5 apache module.
By default, the web pages live under /var/www, the php config file
is /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini and the apache config is all
under /etc/apache2/, with apache2.conf being the 'main' config file.

There're several howtos on the net to talk you through it, howtoforge
is a bit of a goldmine for them.

I have now got to a point that I have a working MySQL database system on
my localhost machine. I thought that I would not have any problem
migrating this to my ISP appropriate MySQL space, but so far I have
failed to do so. Local doc is very scarce, and I did not find any
relevant FAQ. I did find the relevant paths though, and succeeded
installing a short php script which displays the current date, using
strftime(), but there is no way I can access databases. From the online
doc, I learnt that I can't create databases, and that I can just create
tables under the database that already exists. If I import a table, only
its structure gets imported, not its content, and then an error message
says that I don't have privileges for this... so I am surely missing
something as far as setting up is concerned, or initialization. In my
efforts to fetch info, I got a few hints, but they were negative ones,
for instance someone kind of said that most ISP did not allow their
customers to more than one authenticated user. This would mean that I
could not expect to install a database that would be available to the
members of a club, each of them having a login and password.

Could someone tell me where I could find relevant information and docs ?
And maybe mention one or more ISP that would provide suitable mysql
facilities ?

For another perspective:

I use 1&1 (http://1and1.com) for a web database. They have several
level of package, the one I use has MySQL facilities, ftp and also ssh
access to the virtual server that runs apache.

As Monique said, you can use MySQL to store passwords and write your
own login script, but you should also be able to use basic
authentication (with .htpass files) in the web server to require a
user name and password for access to web pages, which may well be
enough for your purposes. The advantage is that it's simple to set up,
the disadvantage is that you have to set the passwords and communicate
them to the users, they cannot change them. Neither of these
techniques count as authentication to the operating system or MySQL
itself, so the single user isn't a problem.

The MySQL installation at 1&1 is accessible by a public IP address
from the virtual server, but this is not guaranteed to be available
from outside their own network. They advise that the database be
accessed only from the virtual server, either through ssh or the web
server. They recommend installing phpmyadmin, which is a script which
runs on the web server.

Monique and Avi mentioned mysqldump, and phpmyadmin offers similar
features remotely through a web page, including uploading of .sql
files, by which you can create and populate entire databases if
necessary. It can also backup the database to a file on the client
computer. You can access phpmyadmin from anywhere, and you need to
login to it using the MySQL credentials. The phpmyadmin information
page can also tell you quite a lot about how the apache and MySQL
installations are configured.

One last point: even if you don't advertise the website outside your
club membership, it will be found by others, and you need to
understand at least SQL injection and cross-site scripting attacks on
web servers, and the facilities that PHP offers to help defend against
them. You should also regularly check your web server directory
structure and files for signs of tampering. And a whole load of other
things, but web server security is a career in itself...

Thanks for your advice. I do have 'mysqladmin' installed on both ISP,
but I lack super user privileges, and most functions are therefore
unavailable to me, as explained in my previous post.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question, but ... typically you would
have *one* login that the website uses to talk to the database.
Website users would not authenticate by logging into the database -
they would authenticate by having a username and (possibly encrypted)
password stored in the database, which you would somehow retrieve and
compare.

Thanks for your help Monique. I hadn't thought of that, but it makes
sense that the ISP only allows one user to log into databases. Problem
is that outside users will have to connect to my database through a php
script that will contain my password !

Could someone tell me where I could find relevant information and

As for hosting companies, I have been very happy with www.pair.com for
years. They provide I believe three database users - read-only,
read-write, and full access. You would only use the full access user
to create the database structure - tables, indexes, etc.
Prior to subscribing to an expensive hosting, I wish to test the system
on free ISP. I have two of them here. I tested them both, but testing
did not go far as for now, since I am far from having understood how it
is supposed to work. No doc is provided, except links for general docs.
As previously said, I have been able to connect and succeed in a few
requests, but, obviously I lack a "full priviledge" (root) status. I do
have mysqladmin installed on both ISP machines, but I can do very little
with it : '... denied for user bdebreil...'. Reading the general
mysqladmin doc tells me that I have to create a super user (as I did in
my local mysql machine on my PC), but nothing works. Same thing with my
other ISP. Using php scripts, some sql request do work, for instance I
can manually add content to an empty database that I have imported using
phpmyadmin (import with no data, data refused: 'access denied...'), but
I have no such thing as 'FILE' privilege, so that I cannot import data
using 'LOAD DATA [LOCAL] INFILE ...' as I do on my local machine. Of
course, anything such as 'GRANT [privilege] does not work either. The
mysqladmin doc says that one has to create a config.inc.php file in the
same folder as 'Mysqladmin documentation.html'... but I have no access
to that folder... I would be tempted to write to my ISP system
administrator, but, since I found that I have the same config at both my
ISPs, I imagine that this is the way it is supposed to be..

By the way, just in case I would decide to subscribe to pair.com, would
you know if it is possible to subscribe for a short time, 3 months for
instance ? I know of an ISP in Switzerland that is quite a bit cheaper,
but then you have to subscribe for at least two years (80 Euros for the
first year, 120 Euros for each following year)

As per the 4 TiB issue. I just have reviewed the wikipedia article about
