However, when the trolls accuse me then for some reason I feel the

I usually simply hit Reply All, as that ensures that the message will
at a minimum go to the list no matter which list I'm posting on. If I
know to which letter you were referring, I might be able to answer you
with more detail. As I don't know to which letter you refer, then we
can assume that the Reply-To headers of the message had that list.
Only now am I delibertely changing the CC of the message, as you
requested not to CC you. Otherwise, my choices are Reply (only to
lisi.re...@~) or to Reply All (to lisi.re...@~ and to debian-u...@~)
so you see that I _cannot_ reply to the list without replying to you
if I do not manually edit the CC list.

I expect you to dislike KDE 4, as it does not suit your needs! That is
quite why I ask what your problems are, so that I might fix them. I
have never disputed your reasons, rather, I agree that your reasons
are valid and are cause for concern. The only thing that I disagreed
with you was on default settings of composting, and even in that
context I offered to personally design a KDE default configuration for
you that you could have composting disabled before loading KDE for

I clearly stated that my intention is not to try to convince you to
use KDE 4, rather, that my intention is to learn about the problems
that you have with KDE 4 so that I might fix them. You don't have to
help me fix KDE 4, but it is only to your own benefit to do so.

do. I get the point, don't worry, I won't ask you about KDE 4 any

What "long, rude, unpleasant emails" have I sent to you? Go ahead,
post everything that I've ever sent to you here. I've sent mails only
as long as the demands of your comments have warranted, filled only
with questions about what is broken for you in KDE 4 and links to bugs

All I did was ask about what issues you have with KDE 4 so that I
might fix them. You don't have to appreciate that, but I do not expect
you to turn it around and call that "rude and unpleasant". Maybe you
don't like KDE contributors taking an interest in your problems with
the software. Many other people do.

Problem with ALC662 Intel HDA

2010-05-09 Thread Leonardo Meira
Hello everybody,

I have a problem with my sound card (nVidia Corporation MCP67 High
Definition Audio | ALC662 High Definition Audio) and I would like you to
indicate the best location and the best way for me to report the bug that I
will describe:

After a fresh installation and setup of alsa, I only have sound in one of
two outputs and the microphone does not work. After reading a lot of
documentation about the subject, I found that inserting the line "options
snd-hda-intel model = 3stack 6ch-index = 0" in alsa-base.conf file I can
make my sound card work better, but with some problems, which are:

a) If I select the 6-channel mode (in kmix or alsa-mixer), the two sound
outputs work but the microphone do not work.
b) If I select the 2-channel mode (in kmix or alsa-mixer), the microphone
works but only one sound output works.

You do not agree with me that this is a bug? I've been experiencing it in
different distributions and several versions of the Linux kernel. As in
several versions of ALSA.

Before you ask me, yes, I've tried all the options associated with ALC662
codec (
http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio-Models.txt)
and the option mentioned above was that worked best.

I am a novice user of Linux. So I ask you for help. How could I help solve
this problem? What is the right place to report this bug?

Thanks,

When looking for /usr/lib/libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0, I find a link to:
libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0.2000.0, a size 609700 file which is present in the

Using 2.6.32-3-686 #1 SMP with squeeze/sid. I do the apt-get update and

Never a problem like this previous to mid-March or so (cannot pinpoint

just getting around to finding a solution).

Any help appreciated -- knowledgeable enough to be dangerous, so even

pstree is used to list a tree of processes and it should not take much time.
I think your problem is arising from the originator of pstree. Have you
tried using "top" to see any other process is taking cpu/memory? Also take
a look
at all cron related directories and files, all files in /etc/cron.dailly,
/etc/crontab

Re: Re: Password messed up

2010-05-09 Thread Don

Coming in late to this thread, but if your K desktop is OK,
then you actually have this problem quite well isolated to something
in the KDM log-in process. It's not X, and it's not your desktop
itself.

By the time KDM has switched over to you, it's writing errors
into a file, ".xession-errors", in your home directory -- you can
check this for clues to what's going on.

Another option is to blitz kdm's config files, and re-configure
or re-install the package. I'm not familiar with how sid
does this, but you can do "dpkg -L kdm", and look for files in

the /etc directory -- for the current Debian stable it's
/etc/kde3/kdm. I suggest re-naming the analogous directory
(don't delete it, you might want it back), and then doing
"apt-get install --reinstall kdm", or whatever the analogous
operation is in aptitude or synaptic, if that's your preference,
which should re-build the configuration section. That's likely
to fix it, at the cost of un-doing any customizations you've
done.

If blitzing and re-building the kdm config fails, then it's
probably some kind of interaction between kdm and something else...

-- A.

Andrew Reid / rei...@bellatlantic.net

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for jumping in here. I've tried the following:

1. I have no ".xsession-errors" (or ".xession-errors") in my home
directory or that of any other user.

2. It appears the configuration files for kde4 are found under
"/usr/share/kde4/config" and also "/etc/kde4/kdm/". I tried moving the
"config" directory to an obscure location and the doing the "apt-get
install --reinstall kdm". It regenerated the config directory but no
change in login.

3. I found that under /user/bin (when doing the dpkg -L kdm) there is a
file "genkdmconf" which looked promising. Reading the help file for it
and executing "genkdmconf -no-old", the files under /etc/kde4/kdm were
backed up and new ones regenerated. Now, I get a different login screen
background, but the action is still the same -- does not accept my
password. I can still use the "console login" option of that screen and
get to the CLI login and doing so still allows me to startx and get
things going.

So it appears that your last paragraph applies. I'll be glad to try
(almost) anything you or anyone else suggests on this.

(I am also, per my previous message, starting another thread for the
symbol not found problem I have in trying to get some applications
running (synaptic, iceape, geany to name a few).)

Regards,
Don

Hi Sven,

Thanks for that suggestion. I had seen that bug and discounted it
because the patch is only effective if smtp_tls_CApath is set, and
mine wasn't set. But your mail prompted another look, and with both
smtp_tls_CApath = /etc/ssl/certs and applying the patch from #287795,
it banished the "certificate verification failed" and changed
"Untrusted TLS connection established" to "Trusted TLS connection
established".

So that's progress :-)

Unfortunately it's still failing to authenticate. From mail.log:
May 9 21:49:18 rimmer postfix/smtp[8121]: 5DE243A66: to=,
relay=NEWSERVER[NEWSERVER-IPADDR]:587, delay=5.5, delays=0.02/0.03/5.4/0,

NEWSERVER[NEWSERVER-IPADDR] said: 535 5.7.3 Authentication unsuccessful)

We are in agreement here Lisi. It's not that I don't like kde4 it's just that
I'd like to keep what I have since it does just what I want/need it to do and
kde4 is such a big change.

We I'm running lenny like now I use kde3 and am so very happy with it. When
I'm running squeeze or sid I run Gnome. I like Gnome but it's just not the
same. I wish I could upgrade to squeeze without losing kde3, or that
upgrading to kde4 wasn't such a radical change.

I don't know for sure what to to when squeeze is released, I'll probably hang
on to lenny for as long as it's feasible.

I did not "bother the list with my grievances" nor "use the list as (my)
personal agony aunt". I said (and I quote including the text to which I was
replying):

I would be. And do we not mean Squeeze? Lenny has KDE 3.5.10.

I have looked at all those, in addition to KDE 4 and Gnome. None appeals to
me. Each has something that I strongly dislike or does not have something
that I like and use a lot. I would love to be able to upgrade to Squeeze if
new(er) hardware dictates, but keep KDE 3.5. But I am not even almost
tempted to go over to the dark side!

I am, however, very sad that KDE 3.5, which I regard as the pinnacle of DE's,
is being laid to rest.

I see no list of grievances. I said that I am sad that an option I like is no
longer available.

That is all, and Dotan landed on top of me. I have also said that I do not
like various other WMs/DEs. I am not being forced to justify myself for not
liking those others.

All I did after that was insist that the discussion be carried on on-list, not
off. I was clearly wrong to reply to Dotan at all, and I have learnt my
lesson. Next time I will simply ignore him!

But this time, even ignoring him did not make him go away.

Some people on this list have been helpful and made suggestions as to what I
might like to try. I am very grateful for it. It is a pity that you and one
or two others did not check your facts.

It is Dotan's right to work to improve KDE 4 if he so wishes, it is not my duty.

I'm not familiar with partimage. Are you saying that it refuses to allow
you to backup partitions with names such as "/dev/vg/home" or
"/dev/mapper/vg-home"?

That's because it's a byte-for-byte copy.

Go back and read what I wrote about dd. You *really* ought to specify
a blocksize (for example, bs=100k).

You probably needed to have updated the disk partition table, too.

That suggests that sdc1 is a raw LVM partition, which you would not be
expected to mount as a filesystem. Are you SURE you're trying to dd from
a filesystem image and not from an underlying LVM segment?

It seems to me that you may be very confused (maybe you don't even know
it?!). If you want specific advice, please can I ask that you run these
commands (as root) and post the output.

for D in /dev/[hs]d[a-z]; do fdisk -l "$D"; done
mdadm -v --examine --scan
pvdisplay | grep Name
lvdisplay | grep Name
mount | grep ^/dev/

This will give us a view on what Disk/RAID/LVM/Filesystem combinations
you actually have.

There is no such file /etc/dir_colors. According to the man page, debian
does not use and ignores both /etc/dir_colors and ~/.dir_colors.

'dircolors' uses a precompiled database. It evidently changed recently.
It's in coreutils and that did upgrade today but the changelog doesn't
say anything about it.

Why was it changed? How does one discover info like that?

great you used DD to backup a filesystem that isn't/doesn't change.

I wonder why in 1 hour the filesystem would have been used so the
initial part of the backup would have been done whilst the fs was in one
state and the last part of the backup whilst it was in a different
state.

if you really must use dd which is not a backup utility. you have to
stop all the processes and mount all the filesystems as read only.

in fact install another os on the 500G drive, that just does the backup
of the original system to the 500G drive.

I am using OO 2.4.1. Take for example
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California. Select all, then copy it to a
document. After some seconds, OOwriter freezes, and, at the next restart
of OOwriter, I am asked if I want to recover the document. This is an
extreme example, I know, and this is not what I habitually do, but with
this example, I am sure that it is going to bug. The same happens less
often with smaller documents, such as snippets of articles like the one
you selected.

I did exactly the same. As I had `jumped the gun' (Google translate:
«avoir prévu le coup»), i.e. as I had predicted that the bug would
arise, here is my console output:

In academic interest you can look what LS_COLORS environment variable contain:

$ echo $LS_COLORS

After that you can look what's wrong with it.

Fix is pretty easy:

$ eval `dircolors`

Read man pages for dircolors(1) and dir_colors(5) for most complete reference.
Note that you should place command mentioned above to .bashrc (or .zshrc, or
whatever your shell' config is) so it will run every time shell starts.

If you are using system-wide definitions, edit /etc/dir_colors and
comment the offending line. There should be one.
Also, check the manpage `man dircolors'. You might want to rebuild the
definitions. Backup /etc/dir_colors before. Better yet, does
`dircolors -b' contain the offending line causing the error?
I'm guessing you use bash.

That is certainly true, but it seems to me that this argument cuts both

Probably true, but I do not see what that has to do with the specific

We will see. I have the feeling that the majority of people who cannot
stand KDE4 will simply switch to one of the other fine DEs (or to Gnome)
in the long run, so it may be difficult to maintain a big enough
community of developers and users to keep the KDE3 projects alive.

> This is a worthwhile discussion for a Debian list.

I never said that it was not. I was expressing my bewilderment with
people who seem to get offended when someone offers to submit upstream
bugs on their behalf if only they would tell him the details of their
problems, just because he may have made a mistake with the CCs. Why not
take him up on his offer, you have to do very little, he will do all the
work? If that leads to some of your problems with KDE 4 being fixed then
you may have one more acceptable alternative available in case the KDE3
zombie turns out to be unmaintainable after all.

How did you figure out that you still have 3.1? Here is how I check mine:

$ aptitude show openoffice.org-base-core

It shows '1:3.2.0-4' in Version field.

P.S. Just a blind shot: try the following command:

$ aptitude safe-upgrade

OOwriter always hangs, and then quits unexpectedly when images are copied (copy/paste) from a website

2010-05-09 Thread Merciadri Luca
Hi,

As stated in the title, my OOwriter always hangs and then quits
unexpectedly when I copy at least one image from a website. This
situation happens e.g. when I copy some text from wikipedia, and that
there are some images between the different paragraphs.

Is it normal? It is really annoying. Technically speaking, copying and
pasting such images directly should be avoided, and the images should be
included from an image file, but doing this is not necessary, and should
not be the only way to copy text without making OOwriter bugging! And,
sometimes, I do not even want the images, but as the selection in
Iceweasel/FF needs to be `continuous,' they need to be included in my
selection if I want to take a bunch of text into OOwriter, and then
remove the images from the copied stuff.

Thanks.

Vnc server

2010-05-09 Thread Andrew Lapham
Hello all.

I'm new to debian (2 days) but have been using Linux for a while. Anyway my
problem is with Vnc4server.

Yesterday I set up my /home/.Vnc/xstartup to include gnome session and I
commented terminal emulator. And I remoted in no problem (I forget if I used
vnvserver or Vnc4server)

Today I turned on the pc and ran the server and all I get is a grey screen
and a mouse. I tried vncserver and Vnc4server. Any ideas?

(Sorry for the case/spelling errors this was composed on my phone..)

It's the other way around, postfix cannot verify the remote server's
certificate.

The problem with postfix is that it runs chrooted and the CA
certificates are not copied into the chroot. See #287795¹.

No, definitely not normal. And it's even weirder the behaviour you are

I experience it from it to time. Sad to be the only guy it happens to!

Whatever video you could ever get on youtube. Let's take for example
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GxLNNu74DE&feature=related if you want
a concrete URI. I could play it many times (without actually watching
it because I am currently not interested in it, I just took it as
randomly as possible), and it would always work, but, after some hours
of use, the video would double/triple/quadruple speed.

It happens more often with some websites, but videos need to be
`sufficiently long.' Such a website (which causes more often problems
with the player) is rtlinfo.be. Take for example the video

I don't have a solution, just one possibly helpful bit of advice: swaks
is the tool for troubleshooting this sort of thing. You have gotten
lots of useful information from Postfix and telnet, but I'd try using
swaks to communicate with the server with and without TLS, and you'll
see, for any combination of connection and authentication options
that you try, what works and what errors are received on failure.

I've never experienced speed problems with Adobe Flash plugin. Well,
"buffering" issues, yes (pauses) but not "double speed".

Can you send a concrete URI where you are getting problems so we can
check?

Wrong behavior of keys after xserver update from testing.

2010-05-09 Thread Sthu Deus
Good day.

I have updated some of the xserver packages from testing repo and now can not
use my keyboard properly - right CTRL and keys PageUp and Page Down behave
itself wrong - for example in text editor it inserts "/".

I tried to set right behavior for Right_CTRL with .xmodmap:

remove Control = Control_R
keycode 109 = Control_R

then reloaded the map w/:

$ xmodmap /home/user/.xmodmap

It seems it reloads all right, but with no luck - still same Right_CTRL key
behavior.

How I can fix it?

Thanks for Your time.

PS Please, reply to the list.

Simply look at that line:

As far as you have size (-s parameter) specified already, you only need to add
frame rate (-r). Following command should work fine:

$ ffmpeg -f x11grab -s cif -r 24 -i :0.0 /tmp/out.mpg

Authentication unsuccessful relaying from Postfix to Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service

2010-05-09 Thread Clive Standbridge
Hi,

I'm trying in vain to relay external mail from postfix on a Debian
lenny machine to a Microsoft SMTP server on the Internet. I've been
reading and searching for days. I've tried numerous combinations of
settings although I'm note certain what they all do and am
experiencing information overload.

I am trying to migrate from one MS server to another.
OLDSERVER runs on port 25.
NEWSERVER runs on port 587. Supposedly it requires TLS but I'm not
certain of that (more later).

My existing, working, setup has postfix set up for "Internet with smarthost"
and the login credentials for OLDSERVER are in /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd.
I send mail from mutt to "/usr/sbin/sendmail -oem -oi" and it is duly
relayed by postfix.

When I change relayhost to NEWSERVER:587, the mail gets stuck in postfix.
In /var/log/mail.log I see "Authentication unsuccessful".

On the same machine I set up an account in IceDove to use NEWSERVER:587
for SMTP and it just works.
What's more, it works when "Secure Connection" is set to any of
"None", "TLS", "Use TLS if available". (That's why I cast doubt on the
TLS requirement above).

So my questions are:
 * How can I fix this in Postfix?
 * Can Postfix do this? Or do I need to change to something else e.g. Exim?
 * What does IceDove do that Postfix doesn't?

The rest of this mail contains more detail.

I've tried with:
 * smtp_sasl_security_options set to noanonymous and empty
 * smtp_tls_security_level set to "may", "none", "encrypt" and not set.
 * relayhost set to NEWSERVER:587 and [NEWSERVER]:587 in main.cf and
sasl_passwd (kept them in step and updated sasl_passwd.db each time)

Istanbul looks nice, but I am obliged to choose `Record 3D' to
actually record something acceptable: if this option is unticked, the
video images' alternate between (black&white) and (color). Note the
`n' at the place of your `m'. Weird, once again!

Thanks. I had thought of this approach, too, but I have much more

This is a Debian list, not a KDE list. A lot of people care about
not making Debian worse, and are thereafter taking the time and
making the effort to present the case for not deleting KDE 3.5
from Debian.

While the KDE devs have gone on to new and sillier pastures, KDE 3.5
is apparently maintained at least by the Trinity project and it is
possible that either Trinity or other solutions may yet be developed
that will avoid the planned harm to Debian.

This is a worthwhile discussion for a Debian list. I would suggest,
however, that follow ups if any be directed to the more focused forum
of debian-kde, to which I have cross-posted this message.

Ffmpeg (command line tool) can achieve that:

http://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-doc.html#SEC4

With "-t" you specify the time interval for screen grabbing.

There also some nice GUI apps ("Istambul" or "gtk-recordmydesktop") that
can also help you with this task.

I've never dared backing up mounted partitions, for fearing of mishaps

You can continue to do either of these that even though you've got RAID1
and LVM. Start up RAID1 and LVM, and then back up the logical partitions
(or filesystems) that result. Ignore the physical ones.

SystemRescueCD does not backup LVM volumes, or, if it does, that must
be a very new feature, and I have not found any doc on this.

TBH I'm not aware of any backup feature within SystemRescueCD, but there
are many useful tools there. I've successfully fixed up software RAID1

filesystems are based on RAID1/LVM combinations and it works for me.

SystemRescueCD only worked as an external boot system. Amongst the tools
it proposes, is 'partimage', which creates images of partitions and
compresses them. When I stated that 'SystemRescueCD' did not backup LVM

So, what should I do so as to backup my system ? I once tried 'dd', but

Without the bs argument you would have been reading the disk 512bytes

I tried 'dd' again. It seems more promising, since it does backup

/dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1 => assembled onto a RAID 1 array as /dev/md0
(boot partition) (about half of a GB)

/dev/sda2 and /dev/sdb2 => assembled onto a RAID 1 array as /dev/md1 and
also as /dev/mapper/vg00-root (about 64 GB each)

/dev/sda3 => fat32 partition, with MSWIN XP installed on it (10 GB)

I don't really know whether I would have been able to use the resulting
file to successfully restore the partitions if needed.

How do you know any of your backups work? Test them!

Sure ! Not so easy though ! To carry such test, you ought to have
enough space available, unless you carry mini tests on small partitions.

This time, I think I have what I need. I purchased yet another external
HD, with a capacity of 500 GB, and, after I had erased whatever it
contained for use under MSWIN, I created four partitions using 'cfdisk',
all Linux. Then I formated them to ext2 using 'mkfs -t ext2..' (mkfs -t
ext2 /dev/sdc1, mkfs -t ext2 /dev/sdc2, .. ,mkfs -t ext2 /dev/sdc4)
Next, I launched 'dd' as follows :

/mnt/sdc4/# dd if=/dev/sda1 of=sda1_04_10.img

Don't know if this was the best way to do, in any case I did just that.
It only took a few minutes, since that partition is only half of a GB
long. Then I attempted to restore the saved partition onto another
partition of my external HD:

/mnt/sdc4/# dd if=sda1_04_10.img of=/dev/sdc2

This being done, and after unmounting/re-mounting the devices, I found
that /dev/sdc2 was indeed a copy of /dev/sda1...

BUT...

I must say that my original /dev/sda1 was my 'boot' partition. As such,
the RAID/mdadm programs did not create a LVM system ; it kept using the
original ext3.

Once this was achieved, I carried on with another partition (sda2). This
one was about 64 GB in size.

/mnt/sdc4/# dd if=/dev/sda2 of=sda2_04_10.img

Next morning (but I figured that the process only took a little more
than one hour), I attempted to restore said partition into /dev/sdc4

/mnt/sdc4/# dd if=sda2_04_10.img of=/dev/sdc1

the result of restoring the partition sda2 onto the sdc1 partition of my
external disk, was not the same as that obtained in restoring sda1 onto
sdc2. I can't read, or even mount sdc1 :

r...@new-host:/home/bd# mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/exthd
mount: unknown filesystem type 'lvm2pv'
r...@new-host:/home/bd#

So, my hard disk partition sda2 has been restored from its image, onto a
lvm2pv logical partition.

Now, my question is : what can I do with this partition so as to
restore something useful ? In case something crashes on my desktop, I
imagine that, after replacing one or both hard disks, I would just have
to partition and then use 'dd' to restore both sda1 (as ext3 RAID array)
and sda2 (as LVM RAID array) and that the rest would follow
automatically upon reboot ? Do you confirm this ?

But, as a matter of testing, what c

That is factually incorrect. Dotan has replied to me+list
on several occasions without permission. From the comments
here I believe he annoys others similarly.

Yes, that happens with the open flash plugin but not with Adobe flash
player (proprietary software and so not installed by default).

Check if you already have the Adobe flash player version installed in
your system.

When surfing on webpages, it someztimes happen that pages embed videos
through flash (e.g. youtube). From time to time, my Iceweasel/FF

On-list complaints about unsolicited CC'ing are also against the code of
conduct, so you are at least as "rude" as Dotan is, and you are
"bullying" all of us to read what should be a private complaint. Pot,

People sometimes make mistakes about CC'ing, especially when they are
having what is essentially the same discussion on two different mailing
lists. There is a reason why the rule to stop public complaints about
CC'ing has been added to the code of conduct; Joey Hess has posted an
informative commentary:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2010/03/msg01846.html

> Perhaps you should read Dotan's last two emails to me (especially the last
> one) before complaining about my complaint.

I do not see what is so rude about these emails; I have the impression
that Dotan is genuinely interested, if maybe a bit overeager, to make
sure at all possible usability issues of KDE4 are addressed or at least
documented on the upstream BTS.

If you first complain about the usability of KDE4 and then you are
offended when people who want to improve the usability of KDE4 ask you
about details, then maybe you should not have complained publicly in the
first place. What did you hope to achieve with your complaints if you
are not willing to work constructively on the resolution of the problems
that you experience?

That is fine, of course, but why do you bother the list with your
grievances if your mind is already made up and you are not willing to
work with the people who care about making KDE4 better? Do you just want
to use the list as your personal agony aunt?

Then I have seen them. Yes, he's a bit persistent, that's for sure. But
really bullying? Anyway, it is not for me to judge if you feel bullied.
And as I hopefully made clear, the "manners" comment was surely not just
for you. It's just an attempt to keep the discussion on KDE instead of a
flame war or something similarly unpleasant.

Well, some of your reasons weren't valid. There were several "this
doesn't work"-claims which just work, at least on my testing install.
Which does not mean that there are no reasons why kde4 is good for you.
The problem I had with some of the comments were that they were unfair.
That something doesn't do as it did somewhere else is not necessarily a
bad thing.
Anyway, let's close this discussion here. I surely agree that KDE4 has
is strengths and weaknesses, and based on your daily routine and
preferences this can be a problem. As with any other DE. I don't like
gnome, which doesn't mean that gnome is bad. It's just bad for me.

I have already forwarded them to the list and would gladly send them on to you
if you were to ask me to do so. But list policy is to stay on list unless
requested to do otherwise. ;-)

The last one in particular was personal, rude and unpleasant. He is not

> collecting issues with KDE4 and filing the
> to the devs.

He is doing that, but in addition he is bullying people most unpleasantly if
they do not do his bidding. I do not use KDE 4 and have no wish to do so.

The only thing I could have done differently (other than not send that very
short and mild complaint) is bow down to Dotan and agree that I have no right
to dislike KDE 4, because he does not find my reasons valid. I tried to end
this by simply not replying, but even that did not rescue me - he sent
another email, to which I again did not reply. What more could I do, other
than be very rude myself, to make him go away?

I do not have to give him reasons for my dislike. I dislike KDE 4 and do not
use it. That is surely my right? I dislike fennel. No-one tries to
force-feed me with it!

And surely I have no duty to help Dotan in his single minded ambition to
impose KDE 4 on all the world? Many of us do not use it. Several people
have been very helpful in sending me comments (_on_ list) on other
possibilities.

If he is truly doing what he is doing from altruistic motives, then surely he
must only "help" (help) those who want his help, not bully those who
don't.

As far as I have seen the mails of Dotan on this list (the one I'm
following), he is currently collecting issues with KDE4 and filing the
to the devs. That in principle is something good, I suppose.
What I have seen is that Dotan might be a bit persistent in getting the
bugs of of you and others. What I have seen from you is that you also
weren't completely friendly all the time. That's why I thought that a
'manners' mail would be appropriate. I am not going to judge who has
begun and who is to blame. I'm just observing that a valid discussion
(what's different in KDE4 and how can it be improved) is getting out of
hand. And it's also up to you to fix that.
Anyway, what's the crime of using KDE3.5? Nothing, except that it's not
supported anymore.

have to be to KDE 4.

This is a very valid point that seems to be lost on some devs. Other
than the logo, not much is the same between KDE 3 and 4. I will
contend that moving to KDE 4 would be no different that moving to any
other DE. You will notice that I've never pressured you to move to KDE
4, I have only pressured you to tell me what is problematic in KDE 4.
I do that for the simple reason that I help improve KDE 4, and to
bring it up to par with KDE 3. I do not think that any other desktop
has the ambition to be what KDE 3 was.

When the time comes that I cannot sensibly go on using

That is wise, and you might enjoy Gnome Shell, that will become Gnome

that is now all the rage.

You will have to better define "glitz". Assuming that you mean
composting, then if your intention is to avoid the glitz, you can do
that in KDE 4. In fact, I think that even XFCE comes with composting
support and integration.

How things look is very important to me. I have problems with my eyes, and
how a thing looks can influence whether I can work on a thing for one minute,
ten minutes or an hour.

Then you will have to adjust the default settings of any DE, KDE is
not exception here.

I have no problem with other people liking and wanting to use KDE 4. I have a
problem with their, in some cases, not allowing me the freedom _not_ to use
it. And I personally shall mourn the passing of KDE 3.

Like I said, I am not pressuring you to use KDE 4. I just want to know
what doesn't work for you. And now I know, or I think that I do: you
don't like composting. Would you like me to send to you a KDE config

Which would basically reflect what init ran and what kde4 is doing when I did
it. Why would this be stuck at the end?

It is a list rule to reply only to list *unless asked otherwise*. In
this case, Dotan asks otherwise, so what's the problem.

[ANNOUNCE] apt-offline 0.9.8 released

2010-05-09 Thread Ritesh Raj Sarraf
Hello World,

I'm pleased to announce apt-offline version 0.9.8

Release Highlights
* Minor Bug Fixes

Please see the git log for full details[1].
.

What is apt-offline ?

apt-offline is an Offline APT Package Manager
 .
apt-offline can fully update and upgrade an APT based distribution without
connecting to the network, all of it transparent to apt
 .
apt-offline can be used to generate a signature on a machine (with no network).
This signature contains all download information required for the apt
database system. This signature file can be used on another machine connected
to the internet (which need not be a Debian box and can even be running
windows) to download the updates.
The downloaded data will contain all updates in a format understood by apt
and this data can be used by apt-offline to update the non-networked machine.
 .
apt-offline can also fetch bug reports and make them available offline

apt-offline is available at [2] and the latest 0.9.8 release can be downloaded
here [3]

The first log is from a "failed" startx with icewm in .xinitrc and the
second log is with a successful starts with no .xinitrc and gnome
coming up fine.

The effects do make you feel sick? The only effects you will see to
get to the System Settings is the transparency. I have a lot of
experience in environmentally-induced reactions (my mother, autistics,
and by the way I am a trained medic though I currently do not work in
the field), and I simply do not believe that transparency will cause a
reaction. Nothing flashes or spins, which are the two established and
recognized visual triggers.

That's why I'm here. I'm not trying to push you into using KDE 4. I'm
trying to learn what you dislike about KDE 4 so that I can file issues
and get things fixed. But I won't do that on trivial things, such as

No, if you tell me about usability issues, regressions, or just plain
bugs in KDE 4 I will work to resolve them. I have filed or triages
over 1300 bugs in KDE, most for users and not for myself.

You did not point out what is not functional. I am here to fix KDE 4.
I am not here for philosophy.

I am not trying to persuade you to do anything other than share your
KDE problems with me, so that I might get them resolved. KDE 3
holdouts are holding out because they are sensitive to the little
usability issues that make a great desktop environment. I need that
input so that I might get KDE 4 as great as KDE 3. I want to know what
is not intuitive, and what doesn't work.

LD_PRELOAD also seems to be a viable option since it is one process
specific. You may need to include send(), recv() also apart from read(),
write()

Is your script always launched from tmp?
That is what you _exactly expect_:

send -- "logout\r"
expect -exact "
Connection closed by foreign host.\r\r
\[r...@gprs tmp\]# "<
send -- "exit\r"
expect eof

If that's not the case, you should modify it accordingly.
Please read the comments generated by autoexpect regarding timing and
differing output. Try setting force_conservative to 1 and/or use
regexp in the expected patterns. Try the simplest expect script, i.e, one
that only logs in and logs out.
In your initial post, you said you needed to store the output
somewhere, have you tried log_file?

You don't mention a single trial-error on your side.
Be warned that this community enjoys helping those who help themselves
first. It's been suggested to try a tool and a manpage. I know expect
looks weird at first, so autoexpect was suggested to ease the curve.
But don't expect to be said exactly what to do (pun).

Regards.

I don't know anything like this, but another approch to to this might
be to use LD_PRELOAD and/or PTRACE to hook connect(), write() and
read().

Many of the programs are created when a potential developer felt that he/she
requires such a program, but his/her requirement is not met by the existing
programs. Now you are feeling that your requirement is not fulfilled and
you are planning to get something of your own :)
Your plan is really good, I could provide any help, in case you require any.

I think the problem is that the X server does not yet load the nouveau
driver by default, this should be fixed soon. Until that happens you
need a minimal xorg.conf, see
/usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/examples/xorg.conf. Running
Xorg -configure should not be necessary.

though.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I thought. Well, I think that I'm going

I'm actually surprised that such a tool doesn't exist. Isn't this
