It's using the O_APPEND flag on the writes, which guarantees that each
write(2) system call operates atomically. That is, the data on a given
write will be added to the end of the file, and if two or more processes
are writing to the file at the same time, the results will be consistent
with some ordering. (Data will not be mixed or corrupted between writes.)

It's important to make sure that each line does fit in the same call to
write(), though. I'm not sure what's meant by "long lines": If they're
too big to process all at the same time, the guarantees for a single
call to write() no longer apply. But the shell is almost certainly doing
the right thing. (In C code, I'd check it very carefully.)

I did try an older kernel (2.6.30) and can get Xorg up, but there is no Xv
and 2D acceleration is disabled. Lockups happen when no xorg.conf is
specified, as well.

Maybe I should also note that I have had issues with the card I was
replacing. Also a OEM Dell Radeon x1300 PCI-e. Using the radeon driver would
give me small "flashing" horizontal lines of green, red and blue. Using the
radeonhd driver 2D worked very well, but I would get hard lockups if I tried
anything 3D, like xscreensaver.

Do Dell OEM video cards do things differently?

xorg.conf is attached.

P.S. Will the debian user list bounce a message if it has too many
attachments? I tried sending this twice before with 3 Xorg log files, in
their entirety, attached.
Any ideas on how to proceed? My X logs mention that my server goes into an
infinite loop. Not

Thanks for the info. I am trying to migrate from dselect to aptitude.

To do a search in aptitude I use the '/' option. In dselect the search
feature is the same '/', once you enter your search if you keep pressing
the '/' key you cycle through all the matches to the search string.

In aptitude the '/' key brings up the search dialog again and I have to
press three keys to continues the search,
 '/' to open search dialog,
'tab' key to select the 'OK' or ''Cancel' button,
then the 'enter' key to find , repeat.

I am wondering if I am missing a feature of aptitude, or if I just need to
learn the new way. ?

I generally don't recommend going outside the repository system, but for this
particular case, it may be easiest to just grab the .deb from the snapshot
service and install with dpkg.

My reason for not going outside the repository system is to continue getting
security updates. If this is a large concern with this package AND you must
have the newer version, I would consider a mixed system.

Foo will be upgraded to 1.1. The 0.9 version is not considered because it is
a downgrade and not does not have a priority above 1000.

Downgrades are not supported, so they are pruned rather early in apt(itude)
processing.

If the 0.9 version had a priority of 1001, Foo would be downgraded to 0.9.

If the 1.1 version had a priority of less than 100, Foo would remain at
version 1.0.

If you can handle the *curses interface of aptitude do:
1. Execute 'aptitude'.
2. Press Ctrl+T.
3. Use left/right to navigate to "Views".
4. Use up/down to navigate to "Audit Recommendations".

This shows anything recommended but not installed. By using up/down to
highlight a particular recommendation, you can see why it is recommended in
the bottom pane.

Aptitude does this (mostly) with a package limit, and we can easily see what
it is. Press 'l'. This allows you to edit the package limit, but it shows
the current one so we can note it. "!~v!~i~RBrecommends:~i"

With this magic string, we can get much of this data from the command line.
Simply issuing (aptitude search '!~v!~i~RBrecommends:~i') from the shell will
basically give us the data in the top frame.

For any particular package in that list (e.g. policykit-gnome), you can also
determine why it would be recommended from the command line. Simply issuing
(aptitude why '~i' 'policykit-gnome') will give the "most installed,
strongest, tightest, shortest" reason to install that package, which should be
a recommendation. Try (aptitude -v why '~i' 'policykit-gnome') for other

There are the usual options (install from testing, backport from
testing, ...), but in your case the fixed version is 1.1.7-8, while
stable has 1.1.7-7.

If you don't care for the newer version from testing I would suggest
downloading the binary version 1.1.7-8 from snapshot.debian.org and
install it with 'dpkg -i'. Of course, this assumes there are no
dependency problems (I didn't check).

In this case, because the fix is in the same upstream version, I would
grab the new deb from the package.debian.org [1] website and install
with dpkg. In other cases, you would look for backports and possibly
backport the squeeze version yourself.

Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.

2010-06-22 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi,

I updated gcc-snapshot this morning, it updated locales, and then I
realize something went wrong. When I start a gtk app I get warning:

(process:5389): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
Using the fallback 'C' locale.

I thought I could just reconfigure locales:

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales
[sudo] password for mathieu:
perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
LANGUAGE = (unset),
LC_ALL = (unset),
LANG = "en_US.UTF-8"
are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C").
locale: Cannot set LC_CTYPE to default locale: No such file or directory
locale: Cannot set LC_ALL to default locale: No such file or directory
debconf: DbDriver "config": /var/cache/debconf/config.dat is locked by
another process: Resource temporarily unavailable

Does this rings a bell to anyone here ?

thanks,

Mmm... as per "man smartctl", LifeTime(hours) is "(sic) The time at which
the test took place, measured in hours of disk lifetime".

Are both disks "brand new" and "equals" (same manufacturer, same
version), not just "same size"?

If yes, compare the output of "smartctl -A /dev/sd[ab]" and look for
"Power On Hours" values. These, being a raid1, should be similar.

Printer and driver?

Cups available options will vary depending on the driver being used.

Anyway, that options (resolution, draft mode, watermarks...) should be
under printers tab → change printer settings.

-c
This option causes e2fsck to use badblocks(8) program to do a
read-only scan of the device in order to find any bad blocks. If any
bad blocks are found, they are added to the bad block inode to
prevent them from being allocated to a file or directory. If this
option is specified twice, then the bad block scan will be done using
a non-destructive read-write test.

is this what you want?

combine it with "-n" and check the exit code to see if errors are found.

No, you didn't mean the partition, you meant the filesystem. ;-) The
usage of these terms is usually very lax, but after you realize that you
can create filesystems not only on partitions, but in other files, raw
storage devices (/dev/sdX) or logical volumes, the terms become quite
distinctive.

I don't agree. It says:

- Don't fsck mounted filesystems.
- When run with -n, the fsck is read-only.
- Don't run fsck -n on mounted filesystems.

Maybe the paragraphs could be restructured a little, but I think all
these points come acrosse quite clearly.

BTW, what's the purpose of that site? Why are these bugs not reported
upstream? It looks like you are the sole user of that site.

> Is there a way to run e2fsck in a strictly non-desctructive,
> informative mode only?

From the manpage:

-n Open the filesystem read-only, and assume an answer of `no' to
all questions. Allows e2fsck to be used non-interactively.
This option may not be specified at the same time as the -p or
  -y options.

What's unclear about it?

You need SMART to check the drive.

Yes, I haven't had time to install smartmontools, but I'll do it as

Hah!

I don't know. First question, though, is: are you doing this on a

No, it's unmounted. I'm checking an external device.
As to checking mounted devices, the man page is very confusing:

Yeah, I read that, but I think you're over-analyzing. Just never
fsck a mounted fs.

Boot from a Live CD (I like Sidux) and run the e2fsck that comes on
the CD. The errors might just go away...

no :-/

Hmmm, that doesn't sound good. Have you googled? Was the fs

No, it's unmounted. I'm checking an external device.
As to checking mounted devices, the man page is very confusing:
See: http://linux.overshoot.tv/ticket/112

Thanks for the replies.

Is there a way to run e2fsck in a strictly non-desctructive,
informative mode only?

The man page is confusing (see ticket above).

Thanks

Augustin.

The *drive*? No. e2fsck checks the filesystem data structures that
have been written onto the drive.

You need SMART to check the drive.

2nd, to the dreaded question:

# e2fsck -vfFC0 /dev/sdc1
e2fsck 1.41.9 (22-Aug-2009)
Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
Error reading block 34308186 (Attempt to read block from filesystem
resulted in short read) while getting next inode from scan. Ignore
error?

I don't know. First question, though, is: are you doing this on a
mounted filesystem? If so, You're Doing It Wrong.

Boot from a Live CD (I like Sidux) and run the e2fsck that comes on
the CD. The errors might just go away...

What are the consequences of answering either way?
As far as I can tell: answering yes will delete the inode, i.e. data
will be lost. Answering no will leave the bad block in place and the
problem will remain.

I have more questions on the topic but this should be a start.

I understood that these were virtual packages, but what seems to be new is that

But if it's now possible in Debian to use snd only if one also uses either

I did try to install first jackd and then pulseaudio (along with their

find any relevant documentation; the contents of /usr/share/doc/snd-gtk-jack is

e2fsck: HOWTO tutorial

2010-06-22 Thread Augustin

Hello,

I must learn to use e2fsck as I am having some I/O problems on some of
my external drives.
I checked all the existing documentation everywhere I could think of
(including the Debian official documentation and existing HOWTOs from
TLDP), but couldn't find anything that is detailed and explicit enough
for my taste.

I am left with some questions that I hope some of you will be able to
answer.

1st, is there a way to run e2fsck in a strictly non-destructive but
informative way, to check the health of a drive?
(question asked here: http://linux.overshoot.tv/ticket/112 ).

2nd, to the dreaded question:

# e2fsck -vfFC0 /dev/sdc1
e2fsck 1.41.9 (22-Aug-2009)
Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
Error reading block 34308186 (Attempt to read block from filesystem
resulted in short read) while getting next inode from scan. Ignore
error?

What are the consequences of answering either way?
As far as I can tell: answering yes will delete the inode, i.e. data
will be lost. Answering no will leave the bad block in place and the
problem will remain.

I have more questions on the topic but this should be a start.

All your answers will be used to compile hopefully the best available
tutorial on this important topic for a Linux system administrator.
This is barely more than a stub:
http://linux.overshoot.tv/wiki/hardware/e2fsck_file_system_check

Thanks for your help,

Augustin.
