bah, en tout cas ça fonctionne;

Modeline 1360x...@60 84.50 1360 1392 1712 1744 768 783 791 807

(je l'ai calculé à l'aide du site
http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl)

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nedit/+bug/1687

lang=fr...@euro /usr/bin/nedit

mois
(http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-user-french@lists.debian.org/msg173447.html).
Cela pourrait être utile à d'autres. Cela concerne l'erreur avec
aptitude et icedove :

undefined symbol: sqlite3_db_mutex.

dpkg --purge --force-all libsqlite0
dpkg --purge --force-all libsqlite3-0
rm /usr/local/lib/libsqlite*

dpkg -i libsqlite0
dpkg -i libsqlite3-0

Aptitude et autres devraient fonctionner à nouveau.

Bonne soirée,
Guillaume

2011-01-04 Thread Jorge A. Secreto
a la pasada, instalé Iceweasel, Galeón y Links 2.
Fin de fiesta:
Epiphany, Iceweasel y Galeón navegan únicamente por proxy.
Opera y Links por donde quiera.

Estoy usando
Lenny con núcleo 2.6.26-2-686
Epiphany 2.22.3
Iceweasel Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; es-AR; rv:1.9.0.19)

netmask 255.255.255.0
network 172.16.0.0
broadcast 172.16.0.255
gateway 172.16.0.253
mtu 1492
# dns-* options are implemented by the resolvconf package, if installed
dns-nameservers 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4

¿
debería hacer
maquina# iwconfig wlan0 mode Master
o es otra cosa
?

Si lo anterior es correcto -
¿
que hacer frente al obtener la salida
maquina# iwconfig wlan0 mode Master
Error for wireless request Set Mode (8B06) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.
?

Funcionou! Muito bom! Estou 100% agora.
No kde4 tem as Configurações do Sistema Regional e Idioma Leiaute do

que as opções abaixo estejam disponíveis. Escolha Evdev managed keyboard.
Abaixo vai aparecer o comando setxkbmap -model evdev -layout br.

Hi,

I can't help on your second problem, but for the first I would create a
fake ntpdate script that writes various details to a file in /tmp.
Something like:

#!/bin/bash

(
date
env
ps -efl
echo Parent is: $PPID
ps -flp $PPID
echo Args are: $@
echo END
) /tmp/ntpdate.out

Should give you some clues when the first cron job runs.

Dom.

Works for me with a simple lpr -PLaserJet-600 in xpdf's print dialogue.
You could look at how CUPS is configured or try the -o option to lp and

looking for a clock, minimum and can play sound

2011-01-04 Thread Zhang Weiwu

Hello. I am looking for an count-down clock. Features are:

   * count down to up to 300 seconds. I wish to configure my fluxbox to
activate it by Ctrl+6, which counts down 60 seconds, Ctrl+3 to
count down 30 seconds, thus it must be able to accept commandline
 parameter for counting down.
   * play a sound when count down to zero.
   * It's not bad to have it with X11/gui, although console app would
do (in that case sleep(1) more or less works). It's even better if
it is implemented as a progress bar so I can configure my fluxbox
to put it to the bottom/side of screen and put it half-transparent.

I found only one such application in package repository (timer-applet),
but I am on a really slow computer and wish to have minimum overhead to
start the application, and although i really appreciate having
opensource applications designed with a good usability concept and
guideline, I don't need it myself in this particular case, thus
timer-applet seems overkill for this purpose.

Thanks for recommendation in advance!

Only the URLs of what you visit. But many sites still don't use https
even for login. (Shame on them...) Or use https for login and later go
back to http, using cookies in a way that it is easy for others to
hijack the session, as the article mentions.

how can i sovle this question? what is SOMEPERLMAGIC? are there any
perl gurus, that have a little spare time?

What are your criteria? Matching important or hello somewhere in the
text? Something else? It's really not clear by your example what is to
be captured.

For example, if it's important or hello then personally I'd use
egrep and avoid the complexity of perl entirely:

$ egrep 'important|hello' asdf.txt
importantthing
another important thing
yet another thing
hello!

$ perl -ne '/important|hello/  print' asdf.txt
importantthing
another important thing
yet another thing
hello!

Hi, I wasn't thinking only about session hijacking, cookies grabbing or
various phishing and spoofing which are just too easy to perform on an
open network, tools like firesheep[1] and ready made exploit kits make
it available to the mass now. I am wondering how many social websites
accounts have been cracked thanks to this, many teenagers consider it a
game, they don't really understand the legal implications so they are
not inhibited. I saw a case of middle school student faking an access
point with a laptop on an open school network, it's easy to find video
step-by-step tutorials to do all kind of nasty things, I can only
imagine what a seasoned black hat can do.
My other concern would be the environment in which such networks exist :
coffee shops, train stations, hotels lobby, school hall... It opens an
exiting array of old school techniques from simply eavesdropping
passwords, using phone or laptop cameras to record typing, grab a
picture of a credit card. This techniques are not specific to open
networks, but add those data to what you can collect over an open
network and it gets really mouth watering for a pirate I guess.

I know Bruce Schneier wrote a nice piece advocating open wifi hotspots,
but I wouldn't use it for anything else than checking the news, and
certainly not for something involving password typing. Off course if you
leave in the middle of a desert and run an open network, I guess it's fine.

Grub has a command for setting the default stanza to boot (please
google for that; it also may be dependent upon the version of Grub
you're using). You just have to insert that command into your menu.lst
(or grub.cfg -- again depending upon the version of Grub you're using).
That said, however, the thing to do is track down why all the other
entries are broken, what is the reason for the continuous loops, and
what update (or other cause) brought it about. Installed new kernel
recently? Updated the initrd? Modified partitions? Updated Grub?
Changed Xorg.conf and/or installed new video driver? It could be
anything of these, or something completely different...

Re: firewall package for laptop wi-fi client

2011-01-04 Thread Brad Alexander
You should probably be running a plugin/extension that turns off flash
and javascript, and let you selectively enable for individual sites.
On firefox/iceweasel, these would be flashblock and noscript. I also
have adblock plus installed. With careful use, this will cull out most
of the malicious stuff.

As for needing a firewall, if you run as few network services as
possible, you really don't need a firewall, or at least minimal rules.
For instance, my laptop has the following ports:

PORT STATE SERVICE
22/tcp open ssh
5666/tcp open nrpe
8010/tcp open xmpp

If you are on a public wifi, you can turn off ssh server (the client
will still work) and nrpe (the Nagios client). On the other hand, if
you turn off password auth in ssh, you should be relatively safe
leaving ssh running. xmpp is the jabber client, and if you are not
using chat, then that should be turned off.

pushed into Suggests.

Feel free to file bugs for every package which abuses Recommends. Beware
though, that Recommends, according to Policy, should be installed on
   all but unusual installations.

The question is really one of philosophy. Do you start with a good
foundation and then build upward? Or do you start with a large fully
filled out structure and then remove the extraneous material?

From what I understand, Debian started building upward. The only problem
was that apt-get for a long time did not install recommends by default.

Debian installation was to install recommends by default as I remember.

That was the reason why dselect was the default and apt was not for
installation for good long time. This upcoming release note uses
apt-get since its behavior is OK now and aptitude is not optimal for
non-interactive session.

When this was eventually switched on the developers found out they
suddenly have too much material and need to trim the dependencies down.
The good side was that some dependencies could be degraded to
 recommends.

What happened (as I understand) was while apt-get was widely used by
power users, many package maintainers started to abuse recommend when
they should have used suggests. That was sloppy and we need to file
bug report on such packages. I see some packages use recommends too
casually.

And where they didn't trim up to your liking you can still use some
interactive package manager (like aptitude and synaptic) to weed the
recommends one by one, or even more drastic, completely disable
 automatic install of recommends.

Both apt-get and aptitude can chose to install recommends. It is just
easier with aptitude etc.

In my opinion we have more functionality without completely sacrificing
 choice.

I agree.

Not necessarily. Remember that xfig is an X client, and these X fonts
are installed on the X server (which might not be the same machine,
making a package dependency potentially pointless).

I don't know the package so I can be wrong but if the program cannot be

happens here: either a) the application should not require a concrete
font for the app can be run or b) if required, the package that contains

squeeze us-intl w/ dead keys on i386/pc/qwerty keyboard

2011-01-04 Thread David A. Bandel
Folks,

I've googled this with no helpful results (several unhelpful results
regarding dpkg-reconfigure console-data though).

I want to get back to the old behavior I had where my i386/pc/qwerty
keyboards had dead keys for international characters (like ~n, but
with the ~ over the n).

Can this be done anymore or not?

dpkg-reconfigure console-data and selecting all keyboards provides me
this (abbreviated) list:
pc / qwerty / US american / Standard / Standard
pc / qwerty / US american / Standard / US International (ISO 8859-1)
pc / qwerty / US american / Standard / US International (ISO 8859-15)
pc / qwerty / US american / Standard / With latin1

dead keys are not in the list. I've tried some of these (the first
two choices), but no dead keys. The nice thing about dead keys
(besides being used to them) is that they worked in xterm, OpenOffice,
IceWeasel, etc.

I will RTFM gladly if pointed at the appropriate FM to R.

TIA,

I'll give you an example. One old lady, whose computing I supported,

One day she messed up her registry to the point where reinstallation was

Only the URLs of what you visit. But many sites still don't use https even
for login. (Shame on them...) Or use https for login and later go back to
http, using cookies in a way that it is easy for others to hijack the
 session, as the article mentions.

I recall reading, maybe on Debian planet, a post about a guy who was
running wireshark while on an open cafe network, and found that even
though he was using https Bank of America was transmitting the
password in clear text. Or something. I can't find it again, does that
ring any bells for anyone?

The point, if I remember, was that one your personal protected network
you are protecting yourself and being protected. So both have to fail
for you to be compromised.

Funny that you mentioned 'dialog': I just had a run-in with it. I wrote
an app. in 2005 to use the '--form' option of it to fill out a form and
pass the data to a daemon. Come to find out that my dialog script no
longer worked: I got a -1 rc and the message 'Expected 8 parameters and
found only 3'. That message was not very helpful so I got the source and
modified 'dialog.c' to show *what* parameters it found. Turned out that
dialog got tripped up by blanks in the form labels. But how come it ever
worked?

 this (abbreviated) list:
pc / qwerty / US american / Standard / Standard pc / qwerty / US

american / Standard / US International (ISO 8859-15) pc / qwerty / US
 american / Standard / With latin1

being used to them) is that they worked in xterm, OpenOffice, IceWeasel,
 etc.

Usually you can do this by using your DE keyboard settings (in GNOME,
gnome-keyboard-properties / layout / adding US-Intl altgr dead keys).

Or by manually editing /etc/defaults/keyboard values, i.e.:

XKBLAYOUT=us
XKBVARIANT=intl

In my experience hoi polloi simply don't understand the value of or need
for backup. I frequently find people who have data that is very
important to them, even crucial to their business, who have no backup.

Important data and no data backup in the same phrase do not
compute :-)

(yep, I know what you wanted to mean here)

They think of the computer as some sort of incomprehensible magic, not a
machine whose behaviour can be predicted or analysed, and which can
 fail.

I tend to instruct people who asks me about their computers (mostly my
family -mother, uncle-... and friends) on the convenience of making
periodical backups for their data (images, e-mails, docs, etc...) and how
they can do the job with easy steps (by simply copy/paste a folder into
USB keys, using a DVD or, depending on amount of the data to copy, using
an external disk).

I care of them and I give practical and exact instructions (by e-mail, by
phone...) but I cannot manage all of their computers neither want to
become the handy-techie-do-it-all-support girl here :-)

I'll give you an example. One old lady, whose computing I supported,
took 'photos of all her holidays, which she looked at often to cheer
herself up and remind her of a happy experience. These 'photos were
very valuable to her. I repeatedly advised her to have an off-computer
copy, instead of having only the one copy on one HDD. (She wiped the
'photos from her camera memory card as soon as she had uploaded them.)

One day she messed up her registry to the point where reinstallation was
essential. She assured me when asked that her precious 'photos were all
fine and she had off-computer copies of all of them. When, after the
event, it became obvious that a small percentage of the photos was
missing, she asked me to install Picasa because that is where those
 'photos are.

Re-ouch! The missing photos were stored online? At least she had a happy
ending... this time.

Don't underestimate the gulf of incomprehension that exists in the
 non-geek world at large.

Yes, and the gulf can have the size of a black hole O:-)... but you
know how these human-things go after all: unless they lose something
*really* important for them, they won't care about backups, no matter
what you do or tell, they'll simply do... nothing.

In the boxes I have built I have *never* been able to predict
