You'll just need the x clients components. APT will handle those dependencies nicely for you. That's its job. Installing an X server is unnecessary unless you're running a display locally. Some remote display protocols (VNC, NX) essentially /do/ do this, and when used in this fashion, you could install /their/ X server components to satisfy requirements. For remote tunnelled SSH X11 clients, you're using your local X11 server. > Is it better for a File Server to make a text-based installation or it is > recommended to install also the X-Server to have GUI in the server? My preference is to keep servers as lean as possible. The CPU/disk/memory overhead is generally not a concern. Security/stability and risk of cruft is. File server without the Xserver
Hi, I am going to prepare a File Server with Debian in a ProLiant and I think that I will not install the X-Server. But I would like to run remotely some gnome X programs with ssh. firewall: iptables vs ufw/gufw
Hi I have a new machine running kubuntu 10.04 which was setup by an IT person with firewalls in /etc/iptables that largely lock-down my box, e.g. some specified services (sftp/ssh) from a designated IP address work, but I can't even ping my box from an scp-enabled IP address PC, far less, use sftp/ssh from home. I find iptables rules daunting and can't depend on further support from our IT, so I'm looking for an alternative that would be easier for me to manage on my own. I've read descriptions of ufw and the GUI gufw, which seem simpler to understand and use. ufw is presently installed but not enabled. I don't know how to transition from iptables to ufw: - Do I have to disable iptables first - Do I have to install/enable the rules from iptables for ssh, samba, etc within ufw? Any help/guidance would be appreciated. If there is a better forum for this query, please let me know also. -- Michael Friendly Email: friendly AT yorku DOT ca Professor, Psychology Dept. Use Debian lenny package on Debian squeeze
Dear Debian users, I would like to know if it is possible to use a Debian lenny package on a Debian squeeze installation and if yes how (what apt-get commands and/or modifications in sources.list)? Let me explain why: I am using Bacula to do backups on a Debian lenny box and upgraded one server being backed up to Debian squeeze. Since then the backups are not running because Debian squeeze uses Bacula version 5.0 and the backup server (lenny) uses Bacula version 2.4. Any suggestions? Re-formating a partition will generate a new UUID. If you want to write a "stable" fstab just use LABELs instead and make sure you assign the same label every time you reformat the partition. (You can set the UUID at re-formating as well, but LABELs are easier to handle in such a scenario) Regards, Andrei -- Offtopic discussions among Debian users and developers: http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/d-community-offtopic signature.asc Description: Digital signature
