Problème avec debian-testing-amd64-netinst
Bonjour.
AMD64 Wheezy: where to file bug, radeon, kernel or gnome-shell etc?
Hi all, I have an AMD64 Wheezy system that crashes reliable if I enable composite in xorg.conf (composite true). The crash locks up the whole system, I cannot ssh into the system from an external computer and it does not even react on ping. I have to use the power button to reboot. The log-files do not show any problems. According to them, everything is OK. The crash does not appear if I disable composite (Option Composite off in xorg.conf), but that results in a Gnome fallback session. I have enabled KMS (options radeon modeset=1 in /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf), the firmware gets loaded and hw-acceleration works (glxinfo says direct rendering: Yes OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV670). The packages I suspect are given below, but because I cannot find the right package to file a bug against I have the following questions: 1. Which is the most likely package that causes this? 2. What could I do to (better) diagnose the problem? 3. Does anyone recognise this? 4. Any suggestion for other packages or reasons that could cause this? rootdelay=9 kernal option - why?
On most of my older systems, I've needed to add the option rootdelay=9 to make the system boot when upgrading to the kernel and such for squeeze. Without it, the root file system is not found and it drops you into the initramfs prompt. I've fixed this on about 5 or more systems, and it has come to the point where I have to wonder why does the kernel present this problem? Why not have a safer default? The solution isn't hard, but it seems pointless to break the boot up for so many systems. Really an issue for kernel devs, but I suppose the installer for Squeeze could possibly use some sort of magic to guess when it might be needed. The default firmware is really quite flexible and I've not bothered hacking it since I got a newer model. It handles DECT, ISDN and analogue phones along with SIP to my Nokia N900 or desktop. Outgoing calls can be intelligently routed so I can configure different phone companies depending on the destination phone number. I've also got one of their custom phones, the main advantage of which is that you can edit the addressbook from the web interface. The big problem holding me back from this is that there does seem to be a hacking community, but it's all in German (not surprising, since AVM is a German manufacturer). The main hacking community I'm aware of is at freetz.org. Much of their wiki is in English (some of it translated by me). freetz is actually a modification of the default firmware to add some extra stuff and remove unnecessary bits. I think they keep the original kernel because of some necessary binary blobs. The other main resource is http://www.wehavemorefun.de/fritzbox/ but that is more concerned with the default firmware and is largely all in German. At a simpler level, you can enable telnet and put a Debian chroot on a USB stick but there isn't a great deal of RAM left for anything you might want to run in the chroot. Anyway, if you want help in English or translations of any key pages that are in German, feel free to contact me. Boot timing issues http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/release-notes/ch-upgrading.en.html#boot-timing I've fixed this on about 5 or more systems, and it has come to the point where I have to wonder why does the kernel present this problem? Why not have a safer default? The solution isn't hard, but it seems pointless to break the boot up for so many systems. Really an issue for kernel devs, but I suppose the installer for Squeeze could possibly use some sort of magic to guess when it might be needed. I would ask at Debian kernel mailing list. Re: utility to downgrade a package with its dependencies?
On Thu, Jan 05, 2012 at 03:43:22PM +0100, Vincent Lefevre wrote: For Debian/unstable: Does there exist a utility to downgrade a package with its dependencies and reverse-dependencies? The old packages would be taken from /var/cache/apt/archives, and the tool should be able to find automatically which packages/versions are needed to satisfy all the dependencies (with minimum change) and should be able to handle virtual packages. Typically there isn't. The big problem with rolling back packages is the maintainer scripts (post-install, pre-remove etc). These are generally written in such a way as to facilitate UPgrades. For example, imagine that package Foo upgrades its configuration when moving from version 1 to version 2. The maintainer provides a script that converts from the old format to the new format when upgrading. You now re-install the old package (which, of course, doesn't know about the new format configuration). Not only does the old package not convert your configuration to the old format, but it doesn't know how to read it either. I was in this situation myself a while ago and decided that the best solution was as follows: * Before upgrading, take an LVM snapshot (this, of course, assumes you ARE on LVM). * Perform the package upgrade and then test the new version. * If happy, delete the snapshot (this is a cheap operation) * If unhappy, rollback the snapshot (which takes a bit of time, but gets you back to where you were). Removing debian from hdd
Hi, I recently borrowed a hard drive and installed debian on it, alongside windows. I used it for a couple of weeks. Later, I tried to remove debian by deleting the partitions I had installed it on, but that caused grub to fail horribly, and I had to reinstall debian. How can I remove debian? Can I make grub ignore that partition and then delete it? Thanks!

Ah, okay, linux-source-3.2_3.2~rc7-1~experimental.1_all.deb. The mother of the headers packages. after reboot, it got kernel panic, even can't mount / and others. so I just back to old old kernel and removed present one. Kernel headers version have to match your current kernel version. now I decided to download from kernel.org and do a try. Can you tell us why are you trying to install the kernel headers? I used to install the linux-header-version and linux-images-version, wrong? Nothing wrong, but those packages (headers) are not needed unless you specifically require them (for compiling things), so what was your goal or just installing for the sake of installing? :-) Yes. Haha. I noticed after make-kpkg it generated the linux headers and images. (might due to I used some flags). So I thought both are needed. So next time i will only install the headers? the kernel panic was caused due to my .config file or ? Who knows, maybe if you say what's the error you got (kernel panic)... but again, kernel headers are version-aware. I don't know from where I can check the log information, I tried to grep panic from /var/log, but there is none. I can't tell what to look because I don't know at what stage you received the kernel panic (while booting, maybe?). Unless you provide more data, I can only make wild guesses. Yes. After booting. Choose the newly built kernel. It's just stopped. I forget the detailed information and forget to take a photo. I am also stuck in Warning messages as following: even for opening emails. (...) Lina, to avoid mixing up things, better solve your kernel headers I am here. And what's your current situation? What packages have you installed? Can you boot your system normally? I have old kernel 3.1. Things are back to fine if I don't make some new trouble. Tomorrow I guess I want to try to rebuild. May I ask you something? Are there some intelligent package, something like read the lspci and other hardware information. And according the info to vim the .config I don't have much hardware knowledge either, so can't build a specific and light kernel. Last one I build the /lib/module so heavy. problematic and then open separate threads for the rest of the issues should they still apply. I mean, things are really time sensitive. Now I can't connect to kernel.org. Give detailed steps on what you are doing right now, what's the current kernel you are running and what's wrong with it. It seems to have a command named install-mbr. Should be pretty straight forward, but I never had to do it. Otherwise you´d need some kind of Windows rescue CD/DVD and restore the Windows boot loader from there.
