This disc is labeled Debian GNU/Linux testing Wheezy - Official Snapshot
amd64 NETINST Binary-1 20120104-15:25,
au moment du boot, F1 annonce :
This is a Debian 6.0 (squeeze) installation CD-ROM.

directorio /usr/share/fonts/truetype

Debian Squeeze + XenServer Tools

2012-01-05 Thread Mauricio Erazo Mejia
Cordial saludo,

 Ping From B

 /Ping From B

Prezado(a),

Feliz Ano Novo!

problems with having two DHCP servers...

Hi Scott,

I'm not the OP, but I do have this problem. When I try to do an install
(wheezy) on a network with two DHCP servers, the installer's dhcp-client
never seems to get an IP address -- even though the two servers are both
responding and both giving the same IP address.

Both DHCP servers are dnsmasq.

When I kill off one of the servers temporarily, all goes well.

Is there a solution that isn't so drastic?

Thanks!

AMD64 Wheezy: where to file bug, radeon, kernel or gnome-shell etc?

2012-01-05 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi all,

I have an AMD64 Wheezy system that crashes reliable if I enable
composite in xorg.conf (composite true). The crash locks up the whole
system, I cannot ssh into the system from an external computer and it
does not even react on ping. I have to use the power button to reboot.
The log-files do not show any problems. According to them, everything is
OK. The crash does not appear if I disable composite (Option Composite
off in xorg.conf), but that results in a Gnome fallback session.

I have enabled KMS (options radeon modeset=1
in /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf), the firmware gets loaded and
hw-acceleration works (glxinfo says direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV670).

The packages I suspect are given below, but because I cannot find the
right package to file a bug against I have the following questions:

1. Which is the most likely package that causes this?
2. What could I do to (better) diagnose the problem?
3. Does anyone recognise this?
4. Any suggestion for other packages or reasons that could cause this?

Hardware:
dual monitor
ATI Technologies Inc RV670 AGP [Radeon HD 3850]

Software:
xserver-xorg-video-radeon 6.14.3-3
gnome-session 3.2.1-1 (from sid)
linux-image-3.1.0-1-amd64 3.1.6-1

That's a huge security hole. You don't want to do that. That's almost
the same thing as letting root log in without a password.

You should have one user that you only log in to for administration
purposes. You might be tempted to call the user admin but it's
better not to use a name that is easily guessed.

 Let's say I call my administrator user bigboy. (I don't, but let's
say I do.) Then that line would be

 userbigboy=(ALL:ALL)NOPASSWD: ALL

user ALL=(ALL:ALL)NOPASSWD: ALL means that the user user can sudo
to any user and execute any command on any box without entering a
password.

user bigboy=(ALL:ALL)NOPASSWD: ALL means that the user user can
sudo to any user and execute any command on the bigboy box without
entering a password.

[I would've have thought that there ought to be a space between
(ALL:ALL) and NOPASSWD: but since it worked for the OP before he
edited polkit files, I guess not.]

rootdelay=9 kernal option - why?

2012-01-05 Thread francis picabia
On most of my older systems, I've needed to add the option rootdelay=9 to
make the system boot when upgrading to the kernel and such for squeeze.
Without it, the root file system is not found and it drops you into
the initramfs prompt.

I've fixed this on about 5 or more systems, and it has come to the point where
I have to wonder why does the kernel present this problem? Why not have
a safer default? The solution isn't hard, but it seems pointless to
break the boot up
for so many systems. Really an issue for kernel devs, but I suppose
the installer
for Squeeze could possibly use some sort of magic to guess when it
might be needed.
Can rootdelay=9 cause any problems?

custom old OpenWRT builds running Linux 2.4 or other stupidity.
   * it needs either FXO/FXS ports or some sort of cordless phone
 integrated with it.
   * it needs to have ADSL2+ support,
   * it needs WiFi, preferably something supported by ath5k/ath9k or
 OpenFWWF
   * it needs 4 Ethernet ports, speed isn't too important
   * it needs to either support coreboot or not be x86 (ARM/MIPS/etc)
   * it needs to be unbrickable, via semi-read-only secondary
 bootloader or whatever.
   * internal SATA or eSATA would be nice so that it has useful
amounts of storage and can be used as a NAS
   * a few USB ports would be nice
   * some hardware expandability would be nice, miniPCI or whatever

One device that comes close is the FritzBox 7390:
   http://www.fritzbox.eu/en/products/FRITZBox_Fon_WLAN_7390/index.php

They're decent devices. The default firmware is really quite flexible
and I've not bothered hacking it since I got a newer model. It handles
DECT, ISDN and analogue phones along with SIP to my Nokia N900 or
desktop. Outgoing calls can be intelligently routed so I can configure
different phone companies depending on the destination phone number. I've
also got one of their custom phones, the main advantage of which is that
you can edit the addressbook from the web interface.

The big problem holding me back from this is that there does seem
to be a hacking community, but it's all in German (not surprising,
since AVM is a German manufacturer).

The main hacking community I'm aware of is at freetz.org. Much of their
wiki is in English (some of it translated by me). freetz is actually a
modification of the default firmware to add some extra stuff and remove
unnecessary bits. I think they keep the original kernel because of some
necessary binary blobs. The other main resource is
http://www.wehavemorefun.de/fritzbox/
but that is more concerned with the default firmware and is largely all
in German. At a simpler level, you can enable telnet and put
a Debian chroot on a USB stick but there isn't a great deal of RAM left
for anything you might want to run in the chroot.

Anyway, if you want help in English or translations of any key pages
that are in German, feel free to contact me.

Oliver

Some time ago, the nvidia driver had a timing issue with the X server,
so it randomly didn't start because the driver wasn't initialized at the
time X did.

In order to check this is the case, even you're not on nvidia hardware,
don't reboot, but just restart your desktop manager:

Not always simply. Moreover, the choice that has been made may work,

If you know the order of the scripts are run based on the filename, and
you notice Amyscript is executed before bmyscript then you can
conclude that -for whatever reason you can investigate later- capital

Unless you're using a weird pattern for filenames (a mix of underscores,

 Hi Scott,

I'm not the OP, but I do have this problem. When I try to do an
install (wheezy) on a network with two DHCP servers, the installer's
dhcp-client never seems to get an IP address -- even though the two
servers are both responding and both giving the same IP address.

Then why have 2?

 Both DHCP servers are dnsmasq.

Why having 2 in a network. Keeep them separated is the way to go.

When I kill off one of the servers temporarily, all goes well.

I thought this is the right solution.

Is there a solution that isn't so drastic?

Make a sane network configuration, I think...

 Not always simply.

It should be, unless you really want to use an outlandish naming schema

Moreover, the choice that has been made may work, then you forget it,

 Can rootdelay=9 cause any problems?

to satisfy all the dependencies (with minimum change) and
should be able to handle virtual packages.

Typically there isn't.

The big problem with rolling back packages is the maintainer scripts
(post-install, pre-remove etc). These are generally written in such a
way as to facilitate UPgrades.

For example, imagine that package Foo upgrades its configuration when
moving from version 1 to version 2. The maintainer provides a script
that converts from the old format to the new format when upgrading.
You now re-install the old package (which, of course, doesn't know
about the new format configuration). Not only does the old package not
convert your configuration to the old format, but it doesn't know how to
read it either.

I was in this situation myself a while ago and decided that the best
solution was as follows:
* Before upgrading, take an LVM snapshot (this, of course, assumes
  you ARE on LVM).
* Perform the package upgrade and then test the new version.
* If happy, delete the snapshot (this is a cheap operation)
* If unhappy, rollback the snapshot (which takes a bit of time, but
gets you back to where you were).

Obviously, any other changes you made between the snapshot and the
rollback would also get rolled back.

 Any suggestions to troubleshoot this?

Some time ago, the nvidia driver had a timing issue with the X server,
so it randomly didn't start because the driver wasn't initialized at the
 time X did.

In order to check this is the case, even you're not on nvidia hardware,
don't reboot, but just restart your desktop manager:

 sudo service {kdm|gdm|xdm|...} restart

Thanks, this allowed me to proceed to kdm without rebooting. I can
also confirm that I'm using the nvidia driver. So, is there a way to
rectify this situation so I don't have to do an explicit restart of
 the service?

I don't know any. I vaguely remember that now it seldom happens to
me. Maybe your particular configuration makes it happen always.

I have not looked into the package in order to see where they set the
timeout. You could send a bug report in order to notify this is not yet
 resolved.

As a work around, you may be able to edit /etc/init.d/kdm (or the
appropriate display manager startup script) and find the start) second
and then add a sleep statement before the display manager is started.
I don't know how many seconds of sleep are appropriate for your
problem, but you can experiment.

Good luck!

Removing debian from hdd

2012-01-05 Thread Guido Martínez

I recently borrowed a hard drive and installed debian on it, alongside
windows. I used it for a couple of weeks.

Later, I tried to remove debian by deleting the partitions I had installed
it on, but that caused grub to fail horribly, and I had to reinstall debian.
How can I remove debian? Can I make grub ignore that partition and then
delete it?

Thanks!

date issue is so bad, I can't open webpage without warning, even can't
open my email box, neither mention send emails and build package. but
now I feel it's really funny. I mean, things are really time sensitive.
 Now I can't connect to kernel.org.

Give detailed steps on what you are doing right now, what's the current
kernel you are running and what's wrong with it.

You are admirable SERIOUS. Which is something I miss in my life. Haha...
Inspiring.

 Greetings,

Best wishes,

P.S. back 10 hours later.

Ah, yes, sorry. Brain fade; MAIN_TLS_ENABLE controls the server aspect
of TLS, not the client aspect.

The problem is when they are administering addresses in the same range.
I've not configured DHCP for a long time so maybe this is common now and
the problems have all been resolved but, in the past, if one wanted
redundancy, one would administer different ranges on the same subnet so
that there would be no conflicts. Hope that helps - John

Is it safe to add /sbin into PATH?

To you user env? If it's not an exposed system, I'd say yes.

It's even OK on an exposed system. Having (/usr)/sbin in PATH for
everyone is the default for RHEL, Fedora, and Ubuntu and, anyway, the
executables in (/usr)/sbin are all x for other.

You need to install a MBR record and set the Windows partition as
bootable.

The package mbr should have such an MBR. It seems to have a command named
install-mbr.

Should be pretty straight forward, but I never had to do it.

Otherwise you´d need some kind of Windows rescue CD/DVD and restore the
Windows boot loader from there.

Ciao,

I find your comment misplaced. Guido wrote that he has borrowed the disk.
And I bet he just wants to restore it to the state it has been before.

And a question on how to remove Debian linux from HDD completely seems on
topic for me as well. Completely includes GRUB and since that to my
knowlegde can also be done from within Debian I answered Guido what I
know.

Thanks,
