2012-01-18 Thread Trujillo Carmona, Antonio

referido a Debian.

-/home/user/repositorio/distribucion/conectar.cpp:28: error: no matching
function for call to ‘QSqlDatabase::setPort(QString)’
-/usr/include/qt4/QtSql/qsqldatabase.h:113: note: candidates are: void
QSqlDatabase::setPort(int)
siguiente manera: void setPort(int p);

Re: Unable to boot into CompactFlash card - card not found by initrd

Hi,

thanks for the reply.

At the grub prompt hit 'e' to enter edit mode.
What where does GRUB expect the root to be? (should not be hd0, probably
 should be hd1,1).

the grub.cfg entry:

menuentry 'CFcard' --class debian --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class
os { insmod part_msdos
   insmod ext2
   set root='(hd0,msdos1)'
   search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 7329bb28-71ea-4060-96a1-accaeef453f5
   echo 'Loading Linux 2.6.32-5-686 ...'

   echo 'Loading initial ramdisk ...'
   initrd /initrd.img-2.6.32-5-686
}

where both (hd0,msdos1) and 7329bb28-71ea-4060-96a1-accaeef453f5 point
to /boot on /dev/sda1.
The grub menuentry was one of my first suspects, too, especially as I am
not familiar with grub2 at all and good docs on it are hard to find. I
admit that I don't know what the set root=... line does at all, when I
change it into set root='(hd1,msdos1)' or '(hd1,1)' I can't see any
difference. However, when I edited the grub.cfg entry the same way I
could boot an usb flash drive, so I think it is ok, and the final error
message when booting fails is:

ALERT! /dev/disk/by-label/CFCARD does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

So apparently linux looks up the right place but does not find it, no
wonder as there is no /dev/hda and none of the boot messages indicating
the CF card has been recognized is seen.

Regards

Michael

Problems with Debian 6.0.3 and ESXi5.0

2012-01-18 Thread Florian Götz

Hi everyone,

I got a serious problem with a Debian install on an ESXi 5.0 Server.
Debian installs fine and seems to run fine, but the harddisk performance
is really low.

I got latency times of about 44 seconds, tested with bonnie++.

What I´ve done:
- New machine in ESXi, harddisk controller LSI Parallel (Debian uses
the LSI53c1030 driver (mptlinux v 3.04.12))

- hdparm -i /dev/sda says:
/dev/sda
SG_IO bad / missing sense data.

The latest drivers from LSI are 4.28. I don´t know if it is a driver
problem oder VMWare Problem.
I also did a new install with harddisk controller setting LSI SAS, but
no performance improvement.

The VMWare ESXi Server should be alright, because a SLES11 Instance that
runs on the same machine and same datastore performs well.
LSI provides new drivers (v 4.28) but RHEL/SLES only and a conversion
via alien and later install of the deb-File brought no change.

Anyone got a clue how to get this running?

Best regards
Florian Götz

Perhaps by good you mean specific to your particular needs. :-)

info grub?

To help you find out which number specifies a partition you want, the
GRUB command-line (*note Command-line interface::) options have argument
completion. This means that, for example, you only need to type

 set root=(

followed by a TAB, and GRUB will display the list of drives,
partitions, or file names. So it should be quite easy to determine the
name of your target partition, even with minimal knowledge of the
syntax.

The full, very comprehensive manuals are online at gnu.org.
Currently blacked out for some bizarre reason (yeah I know, SOPA, but
GNU users don't need educating - just a message should be enough.
Wikipedia is different, and Facebook should blackout for the rest of the
decade).

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.gnu.org%2Fsoftware%2Fgrub%2Fmanual%2Fgrub.html

;-p

and none of the boot messages indicating

Agreed

snipped

I regret I don't have the time to check the above for you at the moment
(CF card is in use). I'm not sure if the / in front of the initrd and
kernel are necessary. (there paths are supposed to be relative to the
/boot directory). So try without them as well.

You still get problems we can try boot delays incase it takes too long
to make the device ready (pcmcia lag).

Try it again. Wait. Try it again. The recent point release may be
 affecting it.

If space permits it's a good idea to pre-download the packages before
doing an upgrade to save network surprises during the process. eg.:-
 # apt-get -d upgrade
 if that shows no warnings
 # apt-get upgrade

There is probably an equivalent for aptitude. Sorry I don't have the man
 files to quote.

issue with mdadm and mirroring drives

2012-01-18 Thread Joey L
I have a raid 1 mdadm setup.
I have devices sda and sdb with 2 partitions on each - sda1 and sda2
on the other drive i have sdb1 and sdb2.

Partition sda1 is the root partition and sda2 is the swap partition.

My sda failed yesterday and now i am running in sdb only.

When i put the drive sda into the system to add it back to the md0 -
the system keeps booting from it and refuses to boot from the good sdb
drive.

What can i do to stop this from happening - I have no other system to
plug this drive into to zero out the drive.

Also if I am able to get over this issue - do i have to do other
procedures to this drive? what are they ??? I think i have to do the
following:

mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --remove /dev/sdb1

mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --fail /dev/sdb1

sfdisk -d /dev/sda | sfdisk /dev/sdb

mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --add /dev/sdb1

I am thinking that I need to do something with grub or do some kind of
update so the server can boot of the good drive that I have working
now - but do not know what it is.

thanks
mjh

Hi, when you manage to boot with the faulty drive in, just --fail,
--remove and --zero-superblock, then --add it again. Off course if
the drive is damaged or faulty at a low level it may not come up or
won't survive the rebuild...

If you can work around the boot issue, maybe you can physically change
the way the disk sdb is plugged-in, and use the slot previously used
by sda. This can usually be achieved in bios too by changing in the
disk ordering.

As an alternate, you could try booting on a rescue live-cd first, then
start your degraded raid, chroot to the system to get the faulty drive
back in the raid and start the rebuild, even reinstall grub from the
chroot, then reboot in the original system.

Once you are done it's a good idea to reinstall grub on both drives.

Re: Unable to boot into CompactFlash card - card not found by initrd

2012-01-18 Thread Michael Lange
Hi,

Thus spoketh Scott Ferguson prettyfly.producti...@gmail.com
unto us on Wed, 18 Jan 2012 22:10:40 +1100:
(...)

 set root='(hd1,msdos1)'

hd0 is the first hard drive (where /boot lives)

I think root=(...) should not point to / but to grub's root, at least the
page you linked suggests this:

GRUB uses GRUB's root device implicitly. So if you set the root device
to, say, ‘(hd1,1)’ by the command ‘set root=(hd1,1)’ (see set),
then /boot/kernel is the same as (hd1,1)/boot/kernel.

Anyway, changing this line does not have any effect, apparently it is
overridden by

search (...)--fs-uuid --set 7329bb28-71ea-4060-96a1-accaeef453f5

which points to (hd0,msdos1).
Of course I stole the menu entry syntax from the debian installer and it
looks like for some reason they added some redundance here, I tried and
actually I can omit either the set root... line or the search...
line, but in the latter case I must set root='(hd0,msdos1)' or grub will
try to load the kernel from the CF card and so fail because the BIOS
don't know about it.

(...)

I regret I don't have the time to check the above for you at the moment
(CF card is in use). I'm not sure if the / in front of the initrd and
kernel are necessary. (there paths are supposed to be relative to the
/boot directory). So try without them as well.

Hmm, as long as it finds both kernel and initrd I think it can't be too
bad ;)

You still get problems we can try boot delays incase it takes too long
to make the device ready (pcmcia lag).

I have tried before to add rootdelay=30 which is suggested often in these
cases, but without success. And, if the problem is caused by a pcmcia
delay, shouldn't then the card be available after a few minutes in the
rescue shell? If so, I can confirm that at least 15 min. is not enough ;)

Now, as grub boots the kernel ok and tries to mount the right partition
as /, I am afraid the problem is somewhere else than in the grub menu
entry :(

I have been looking into the udev rules files in the intrd and found the
following in 60-persistent-storage.rules :

# skip removable ide devices, because open(2) on them causes an events
# loop
KERNEL==hd*[!0-9], ATTR{removable}==1, DRIVERS==ide-cs|ide-floppy, \
GOTO=persistent_storage_end
KERNEL==hd*[0-9], ATTRS{removable}==1, \
GOTO=persistent_storage_end

I even tried uncommenting this, but of course it was not that easy ;)

Unfortunately good docs on writing udev rules are even much harder to
find than good grub docs ;)

Thanks for your efforts, I really appreciate that!

Michael

To get the system to start on a degraded raid array you can try passing
the following option on the linux line of the grub menu:

md-mod.start_dirty_degraded=1

To edit the grub menu entry type the letter e, then make the changes
by adding the option at the end of the line that starts with linux.
To boot use ctrl + x (keys control and x et the same time).

Once you are in the system, issue (as root) the following commands
assuming that md0 is the array, and sdb1 the faulty drive partition:

mdadm /dev/md0 --fail /dev/sdb1

mdadm /dev/md0 --remove /dev/sdb1

mdadm /dev/md0 --zero-superblock /dev/sdb1

mdadm /dev/md0 --add /dev/sdb1

fail and remove can be issued in the same command, but you can also
use them as shown above for clarity's sake.

Regarding grub, just use the usual magic formula (as root):

grub-install --recheck --no-floppy /dev/sda

repeat for /dev/sdb, or use hd0 and hd1 which is grub traditional
notation for first and second drives.

thanks for the reply -

1. my issue is that i am not getting to the grub menu on the good
disk, it always goes to the bad one.
I think it puts me in a intrdfsram prompt or something similar - even
if i change the bios settings.
- so editing the grub menu option - is unavailable for me.

2. regarding the procedure after grub - you wrote:

grub-install --recheck --no-floppy /dev/sda

repeat for /dev/sdb, or use hd0 and hd1 which is grub traditional
notation for first and second drives.

my drives are /dev/sda and my boot partition is /dev/sda1

what do i type in that scenerio after i am able to create the mirror
back to the way it was.

On installing grub - can you tell me what is the procedure for that

Regarding grub, just use the usual magic formula (as root):

 grub-install --recheck --no-floppy /dev/sda

repeat for /dev/sdb, or use hd0 and hd1 which is grub traditional
notation for first and second drives.

initrd is a later stage than grub menu, grub comes second after bios,
and is in charge of loading the initrd. So if you get to the initrd
busybox shell it means you got past the grub menu. Otherwise what you
think is initrd really is either bios or grub.

Maybe it's time you give us some details about your setup, what kind of
computer is this, and what flavor of Debian are you running on it (grub
version would be nice too) ?
How exactly is the boot sequence occurring, what do you see and in
what order ?
How do you know it chooses the faulty drive ?

No matter which drive the system boots on, it will fail to bring up the
raid array your root partition resides on if it's flagged as degraded,
unless you pass the necessary option I gave you earlier. It is possible
to assemble the array from the busybox (initrd) shell and resume the
init (boot) process, but if we don't have more details, or if you
don't tell us exactly what you try and the result (error messages), we
can keep shooting in the dark for a long time.

If you can't get it to boot by itself it may be easier to boot from a
recovery live-cd, any will do as long as it has mdadm installed or
installable. From there it will be possible to start the degraded raid
array, make sure it works, chroot on it (means transferring the
live-cd shell to the target system), and then issue commands as if they
were issued from the target system. Or for a start you could simply
assemble the array, start it and mount the target system's partition,
and edit the grub menu entry to add the necessary option.

That's strange that your BIOS won't let you select the primary drive. I
suppose it is possible that the drives are jumpered to master and slave.
One could also try physically reversing the drives to see if perhaps the
bus scan order is the determining factor. I'm just guessing as I am
certainly not an expert in this area - John

how to download the packages in Debian testing non-free before installing?

2012-01-18 Thread lee

Hi,

how do I download the packages in the non-free section and make them
useable by the Debian installer before starting the installation?

The problem is installing Debian on a laptop with wireless only. So I
need to dowload all the DVDs before starting the installation, and still
the software needed to get the wirless card (Intel Centrino Wireless-N
1030) working is in the non-free section which won´t be on the DVDs[1].

There seem to be (unofficial) CD-images with the firmware on them[2].
Are these the right ones to get? What might be the best way to go about
this?

make sure you have udp on port 23 open for inbound and outbound on
iptables.

You can run ntpdate -u YOURTIMESERVEROFCHOICE
Or you could also run ntpd -qg
Or if your ntpd is already running stop it then try again and if all
works verify your settings in the conf file. Reboot try one last time
and should be squared away.

Also if you want sysclock and hwclock to match make sure your hwclock is
set to UTC or localtime depending on your config. Then if hwclock is
still off run hwclock --systohc

worked fine for years but some time in the past few months it stopped
working. It may have stopped working when I upgraded from Lenny to
Squeeze last April. I use 'startx -- +bs' and I have also added
'Option BackingStore' in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. In /var/log/Xorg.0.log
it says Backing store enabled, but when my programme's window is
re-exposed it comes up black.

In searching for information, I found a vague statement suggesting
that something about backing store may have changed recently in X11,
but there were no details. Does anyone know anything about such a
change? Perhaps I should find an X11 list for this question, but I
thought I'd ask here first since it may be related to my upgrade to
Squeeze.

Thanks.

You don't.

The problem is installing Debian on a laptop with wireless only. So I
need to dowload all the DVDs before starting the installation, and still
the software needed to get the wirless card (Intel Centrino Wireless-N
1030) working is in the non-free section which won´t be on the DVDs[1].

Most probably it's the firmware you require. This can be provided to d-i
on a USB stick.

Download any needed packages on another computer and put them on a USB
stick that you plug in when you install Debian. See
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch06s04.html.

No, you don't. The first DVD (or CD) should be sufficient.

There seem to be (unofficial) CD-images with the firmware on
them[2]. Are these the right ones to get? What might be the best way
 to go about this?

On [2] you only find the firmware which you have to put on a USB stick.
There are also netinst CD images which already include the firmware
under
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/,
those also have the minimally necessary packages for setting up WiFi, in
particular wpasupplicant.

The Squeeze installer itself does not support WPA, but the Wheezy
installer does.

  mjh

initrd is a later stage than grub menu, grub comes second after bios,
and is in charge of loading the initrd.

Yes you can, remove the --no-floppy option, it's a precautionary
measure. I have the habit to add it when I don't know what the hardware
is, it prevents nasty grub mistakes when a floppy drive is present, and
doesn't hurt if there isn't any. Floppy is something of the past, I have
to get used to it.

Doesn't hurt do refresh your /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf , compare it to the
output of:

mdadm --misc --detail --brief /dev/md?*

If you change mdadm.conf, rebuild your initrd:

update-initramfs -u -k all

Nothing to do for grub aside from making sure it's installed on all
drives in the array.

before or after I reboot ?

It's always better to make sure everything is in order before rebooting,
after it is sometime too late...

POP3 in Debian

2012-01-18 Thread peasthope
Hi,

Since the weekend my MUA POP3 connection has failed to receive
messages with this appearing in the log.
--- POP
RCV: +OK pop.shaw.ca
SND: USER peasthope
RCV: +OK password required for user peasth...@shaw.ca

RCV: +OK server ready
SND: UIDL
RCV: +OK 35 messages
SND: LIST 1
RCV: -ERR unable to parse msg
SND: RETR 1
RCV: -ERR unable to parse msg
SND: QUIT

Failure in parsing LIST 1 baffles. How big a problem can parsing of 6
characters be? To understand further, I want a Debian system to automatically
retrieve messages from the POP3 server and put them in /home/peter/mbox.
Then qpopper can let the preferred MUA pop them from the mbox. Which
software should be configured to retrieve from the ISP POP3 server and
store in mbox? Exim, getmail or another?

Thanks, ... Peter E.

See all of your columns with zeros? See mine don't have zeros, but actual
data? It seems your ntpd is failing to contact the remote ntp servers. While
watching iftop, stop and start ntpd. You should see connections going out to
the remote ntp servers. We need to confirm that.

Also, please paste your /etc/ntp.conf file.

Download any needed packages on another computer and put them on a USB
stick that you plug in when you install Debian. See
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch06s04.html.

Unfortunately, I don´t have another computer available, and the laptop
is setup so badly from factory with Windoze that I will have to remove
Windoze completely because I can´t shrink the partition to a reasonable
size. And they didn´t deliver any installation media with it :((

If the installation fails, I will have to restore the laptop from the
backups I made on DVDs, download whatever I need and start over again.
So I want to make sure the installation doesn´t fail before I start.

The problem is installing Debian on a laptop with wireless only. So I
need to dowload all the DVDs before starting the installation,

No, you don't. The first DVD (or CD) should be sufficient.

Will I be able to get the wireless working with the first DVD before
making any changes to the hard disks?

and
still the software needed to get the wirless card (Intel Centrino
Wireless-N
1030) working is in the non-free section which won´t be on the DVDs[1].

There seem to be (unofficial) CD-images with the firmware on
them[2]. Are these the right ones to get? What might be the best way
to go about this?

On [2] you only find the firmware which you have to put on a USB stick.
There are also netinst CD images which already include the firmware
under
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/,
those also have the minimally necessary packages for setting up WiFi, in
particular wpasupplicant.

Hm, what´s the point in having the firmware only and not the software to
get the wireless card to work? Apparently, I need software from the
non-free section which isn´t included on the DVDs, so having the
firmware only get´s me no more than like half the way.

The Squeeze installer itself does not support WPA, but the Wheezy
installer does.

Wheezy is Testing, afair? I want to install Testing anyway: Will that
work with the D/I from testing when I have the firmware ready, or will
there still be software (from non-free) missing needed to make a
wireless connection?

Most probably it's the firmware you require. This can be provided to d-i
on a USB stick.

Ok, and how do I set up a wireless connection without the software from

For automatic retrieval I have been using getmail for a long time.

Network setup is before the partitioning step, at least you can stop if

It can take a few minutes of ntpd running before you get the + and *
marks in the remote column, like Stan has. I don't remember exactly
what they mean, but it's something along the lines of your ntp daemon
having established a link with those remote ntp servers. I'm not sure
if that accounts for all the zeros in the other columns, though.

Download any needed packages on another computer and put them on a USB

If you want to get it working during installation, you have to provide
the firmware, e.g. on a USB stick. And if you need WPA/WPA2 support,
you need a recent version of the Debian installer.

Hm, what´s the point in having the firmware only and not the software to
get the wireless card to work? Apparently, I need software from the
non-free section which isn´t included on the DVDs, so having the

No, what makes you think so? There should be a driver for your card in
the kernel, unless the device is too new. And it's only the firmware
which is not free.

The Squeeze installer itself does not support WPA, but the Wheezy
 installer does.

Wheezy is Testing, afair? I want to install Testing anyway: Will that
work with the D/I from testing when I have the firmware ready,

Probably, although you may run into other bugs.

 or will
there still be software (from non-free) missing needed to make a
 wireless connection?

I don't think Debian even ships any software related to wireless in
non-free, except for firmware.

Re: issue with mdadm and mirroring drives

2012-01-18 Thread Joey L
Sorry - just a couple of last things:

1. do i run the command - grub-install --recheck --no-floppy
/dev/sdc1 and grub-install --recheck --no-floppy /dev/sdd1 ???

or do I run it on the whole drive meaning - grub-install --recheck
--no-floppy /dev/sdc and grub-install --recheck --no-floppy
/dev/sdd

Is that creating a boot sector ? what is it really doing ? do i need
to set something active in the boot partition - meaning in fdisk ?

2. update-initramfs -u -k all -this command only update /boot dir ?
and then the mirroing copied to the other drive ??

3. Big thanks for your help!

Please have a closer read of

   http://wiki.debian.org/iwlagn

where it says

iwlagn is a module produced by the iwlwifi Linux kernel driver,

The module is the only software you need. It is free software. The
firmware, on the other hand, isn't. Both together get you all the way
there.

Early in the install (detecting network hardware) you should be informed
about missing non-free firmware and asked to supply it. d-i is set up to
look for it on a USB stick.

A misunderstanding on my part. I had visions of your wanting a

the firmware files from a firmware-iwlwifi .deb or .tar.gz.

Ok, and how do I set up a wireless connection without the software from

We are both capable of misunderstanding. :)
