Problems with Debian 6.0.3 and ESXi5.0
Hi everyone, I got a serious problem with a Debian install on an ESXi 5.0 Server. Debian installs fine and seems to run fine, but the harddisk performance is really low. I got latency times of about 44 seconds, tested with bonnie++. What I´ve done: - New machine in ESXi, harddisk controller LSI Parallel (Debian uses the LSI53c1030 driver (mptlinux v 3.04.12)) - hdparm -i /dev/sda says: /dev/sda SG_IO bad / missing sense data. The latest drivers from LSI are 4.28. I don´t know if it is a driver problem oder VMWare Problem. I also did a new install with harddisk controller setting LSI SAS, but no performance improvement. The VMWare ESXi Server should be alright, because a SLES11 Instance that runs on the same machine and same datastore performs well. LSI provides new drivers (v 4.28) but RHEL/SLES only and a conversion via alien and later install of the deb-File brought no change. Anyone got a clue how to get this running? Perhaps by good you mean specific to your particular needs. :-) info grub? To help you find out which number specifies a partition you want, the GRUB command-line (*note Command-line interface::) options have argument completion. This means that, for example, you only need to type set root=( followed by a TAB, and GRUB will display the list of drives, partitions, or file names. So it should be quite easy to determine the name of your target partition, even with minimal knowledge of the syntax. The full, very comprehensive manuals are online at gnu.org. Currently blacked out for some bizarre reason (yeah I know, SOPA, but GNU users don't need educating - just a message should be enough. Wikipedia is different, and Facebook should blackout for the rest of the decade). http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.gnu.org%2Fsoftware%2Fgrub%2Fmanual%2Fgrub.html I admit that I don't know what the set root=... line does at all, when I change it into set root='(hd1,msdos1)' or '(hd1,1)' I can't see any difference. Re: Unable to boot into CompactFlash card - card not found by initrd
Hi, Thus spoketh Scott Ferguson prettyfly.producti...@gmail.com unto us on Wed, 18 Jan 2012 22:10:40 +1100: (...) set root='(hd1,msdos1)' hd0 is the first hard drive (where /boot lives) I think root=(...) should not point to / but to grub's root, at least the page you linked suggests this: GRUB uses GRUB's root device implicitly. So if you set the root device to, say, ‘(hd1,1)’ by the command ‘set root=(hd1,1)’ (see set), then /boot/kernel is the same as (hd1,1)/boot/kernel. Anyway, changing this line does not have any effect, apparently it is overridden by search (...)--fs-uuid --set 7329bb28-71ea-4060-96a1-accaeef453f5 which points to (hd0,msdos1). Of course I stole the menu entry syntax from the debian installer and it looks like for some reason they added some redundance here, I tried and actually I can omit either the set root... line or the search... line, but in the latter case I must set root='(hd0,msdos1)' or grub will try to load the kernel from the CF card and so fail because the BIOS don't know about it. (...) I regret I don't have the time to check the above for you at the moment (CF card is in use). I'm not sure if the / in front of the initrd and kernel are necessary. (there paths are supposed to be relative to the /boot directory). So try without them as well. Hmm, as long as it finds both kernel and initrd I think it can't be too bad ;) You still get problems we can try boot delays incase it takes too long to make the device ready (pcmcia lag). I have tried before to add rootdelay=30 which is suggested often in these cases, but without success. And, if the problem is caused by a pcmcia delay, shouldn't then the card be available after a few minutes in the rescue shell? If so, I can confirm that at least 15 min. is not enough ;) Now, as grub boots the kernel ok and tries to mount the right partition as /, I am afraid the problem is somewhere else than in the grub menu entry :( I have been looking into the udev rules files in the intrd and found the following in 60-persistent-storage.rules : # skip removable ide devices, because open(2) on them causes an events # loop KERNEL==hd*[!0-9], ATTR{removable}==1, DRIVERS==ide-cs|ide-floppy, \ GOTO=persistent_storage_end KERNEL==hd*[0-9], ATTRS{removable}==1, \ GOTO=persistent_storage_end I even tried uncommenting this, but of course it was not that easy ;) Unfortunately good docs on writing udev rules are even much harder to find than good grub docs ;) Thanks for your efforts, I really appreciate that! So if you get to the initrd busybox shell it means you got past the grub menu. Otherwise what you think is initrd really is either bios or grub. how to download the packages in Debian testing non-free before installing?
Hi, how do I download the packages in the non-free section and make them useable by the Debian installer before starting the installation? The problem is installing Debian on a laptop with wireless only. So I need to dowload all the DVDs before starting the installation, and still the software needed to get the wirless card (Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030) working is in the non-free section which won´t be on the DVDs[1]. X backingstore no longer working
Some of my own software requires Xorg backingstore to be working so as to redraw windows when they're hidden and then exposed again. This has worked fine for years but some time in the past few months it stopped working. It may have stopped working when I upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze last April. I use 'startx -- +bs' and I have also added 'Option BackingStore' in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. In /var/log/Xorg.0.log it says Backing store enabled, but when my programme's window is re-exposed it comes up black. In searching for information, I found a vague statement suggesting that something about backing store may have changed recently in X11, but there were no details. Does anyone know anything about such a change? Perhaps I should find an X11 list for this question, but I thought I'd ask here first since it may be related to my upgrade to Squeeze. Now, my question to you is: 1. what do I do next ? do i run the command - grub-install --recheck --no-floppy /dev/sdc1 (sdc1 is my good drive) 2. Do i do this command after a reboot or just after the sync is done ? 3. I get this error regarding a Floppy Error - I have no floppy drives - how can i remove this ? 4. Now, my question to you is: 1. what do I do next ? do i run the command - grub-install --recheck --no-floppy /dev/sdc1 (sdc1 is my good drive) If the system is booting normally now, it's not mandatory. But it wouldn't hurt to make sure grub is installed on all drives in the array. 2. Do i do this command after a reboot or just after the sync is done ? Doesn't matter, I would say let it sync first out of pity for that poor drive ;-) . 3. I get this error regarding a Floppy Error - I have no floppy drives - how can i remove this ? Yes you can, remove the --no-floppy option, it's a precautionary measure. I have the habit to add it when I don't know what the hardware is, it prevents nasty grub mistakes when a floppy drive is present, and doesn't hurt if there isn't any. Floppy is something of the past, I have to get used to it. 4. Do i have to update any of the mdadm files ? or any additional grub files ? before or after I reboot ? How big a problem can parsing of 6 characters be? To understand further, I want a Debian system to automatically retrieve messages from the POP3 server and put them in /home/peter/mbox. Sorry - just a couple of last things: 1. do i run the command - grub-install --recheck --no-floppy /dev/sdc1 and grub-install --recheck --no-floppy /dev/sdd1 ??? or do I run it on the whole drive meaning - grub-install --recheck --no-floppy /dev/sdc and grub-install --recheck --no-floppy /dev/sdd Is that creating a boot sector ? what is it really doing ? do i need to set something active in the boot partition - meaning in fdisk ? 2. update-initramfs -u -k all -this command only update /boot dir ? and then the mirroing copied to the other drive ?? 3.
