webalizer config?
I have webalizer installed on my Deb/Squeeze server at linode (serving site in signature, plus others). All the time it's missing data. In the config, I have it using /var/log/apache2/my.log and in crontab I have 0 1 * * * mergelog access.log other_vhosts_access.log my.log MY.log 2 1 * * * mv MY.log my.log 5 1 * * * webalizer (except I have the full path on all those logs). This should, afaiu, merge the access and other_vhosts logs and the previous merged log into MY.log, then move that to my.log (this my.log then being merged again on the following day with new data). But when I go to the web interface, I'll be missing a week of data at time (generally the previous week). What am I doing wrong here? I've gone in and gunzipped old logs and re-merged tonso data, and gotten what appears to be complete data back to January when the server was set up, but when I do this, values change from what current, more recent data shows. Also, that's a PITA, and should not, as I see it, be necessary. Furthermore, I feel like I'm not getting accurate data. My understanding is that webalizer is supposed to be more or less automatic, but if I don't merge these logs, I don't get full data. Now, on any given day, I believe the old my.log should, prior merging, contain past data, yes? So why do I lack the previous week when I do this, unless I gunzip older logs and remerge them (and then see unexplicable alterations to the most recent data, or, say, the previous month, which shouldn't be changing, unless time travelers are accessing my site)? Perhaps I have misunderstood how to make webalizer work. I did read the man page, and altered /etc/webalizer/webalizer.conf to use my.log, etc. ./tony -- http://www.tonybaldwin.me all tony, all the time! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. For Testing/Unstable (currently Wheezy/Sid) it does not matter. Packages enter Sid and ten days later migrate to Testing (currently Wheezy) unless blocked by a bug report. For most packages the difference is only a delay of a few days. For others with bugs, or while big transitions happening, they are held longer but eventually will migrate through. A system that has been upgraded will be upgraded to the latest available version. Therefore in the above you have a Sid system, not a Wheezy system. Packages in Sid will be newer than packages in Wheezy. Therefore when you install you will have packages from Sid. Your system is then already a Sid system. [Same thing for Stable to Testing (currently Squeeze to Wheezy). If you have a Squeeze system and add Wheezy lines to the sources.list file and upgrade then you have a Wheezy system, not a Squeeze system. The presence of Squeeze lines don't matter since those packages are older than the ones in Wheezy.] What would happen if I would commented wheezy lines by using a # and after that I run 'aptitude update' and 'aptitude safe-upgrade'? Nothing different would happen from what you have today. You already have Sid listed in your sources.list system. If you have upgraded to Sid packages then you already have a Sid system. Removing the Wheezy lines will do nothing different than you have today. Or leaving them in. Other than taking up more memory and running slower because of the need to process so much more data, leaving those Wheezy lines in won't matter either. I would take them out just to simplify things. Right about now there are ten people jumping at the chance to correct me and say, no, that isn't true, Squeeze has package XYZ that was removed from Sid and Wheezy, and Wheezy has the pre-transition version of package ABC that was removed from Sid. They will say that they are really different. Yes, yes, yes to all. They are different release tracks, have their own repositories. Some individual packages or transitions of packages will have been added and removed between the different repositories. Each and every one of those are special cases that would need to be discussed separately. Which is too much to talk about in a quick answer so I am going to ignore this for now. Can I mess up my system in this way? Yes. You can have a very broken system. But not because of your question. You can have a very broken system because you needed to ask your question. I hate to say this but if you are asking this question then you have not yet acquired the necessary skills to be successful running Sid/Unstable. Sid is often in a broken state and people using it are expected to know how to deal with the problems. Until you have more experience it is better to run Stable, or at the least run Testing, rather than Unstable. Bob signature.asc Description: Digital signature

How to share the Internet with Linux and an iPad by Wi-Fi?
Hi :) I need to share the Internet for the PC with an iPad. Linux is connected by PPPoE using eth0 to the Internet and the iPad should get access to the Internet by a Sempre WU300-1K USB adapter connected to the Linux PC. $ hwinfo --usb [snip] Device: usb 0x8172 RTL8191S WLAN Adapter Revision: 2.00 Serial ID: 00e04c01 Driver: r8712u Driver Modules: r8712u Device File: wlan0 [snip] Using Arch Linux I didn't get the Sempre to run. Using Ubuntu Studio Oneiric I can connect the iPad to Linux by WLAN, but there's neither a password required nor access to the Internet. Is there a way to get Internet access under Debian + a password protection? If I run this on Ubuntu ... $ cat adhoc #! /bin/sh # sh ./adhoc # https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Adhoc device=wlan0 sudo service network-manager stop sudo ip link set $device down sudo iwconfig $device mode ad-hoc sudo iwconfig $device channel 4 sudo iwconfig $device essid 'oz' sudo iwconfig $device key 1324354657 # sudo dhclient $device sudo ip addr add 169.254.34.2/16 dev $device exit 0 ... the iPad recognized a network oz. I can connect by selecting the name oz, WEP and for the password I just enter a space, but as mentioned before, I don't get access to the Internet. A google for linux masquerade router found several confusing and not working howtos. I would install a minimal Debian, if there should be a usable howto. Perhaps a small Debian without GUI, since for the moment I would be glad, just to get access to the Internet for the iPad. Any hints are welcome, Ralf OT: I didn't buy, but won an iPad 2. Beside all that flashy crap it can do amazing things, of cause not usable with Linux, but for Mac and Windows there are e.g. amazing apps that can be used with Mac and Windows DAWs. Perhaps a jailbreak will enable some possibilities, when using it with a Linux PC too. I was thinking of selling it and buying an Android tablet, but a request on Linux audio mailing lists made clear that Android hasn't the abilities for pro-audio and the Android developers aren't interested in fixing bugs related to this issue. Another wasted chance for Linux to become popular and to make more hardware vendors taking care of Linux. Sleeping from within KDE fails
Please CC, I'm not subscribed to the list. Recently after an upgrade (running unstable) I noticed that closing the lid on my laptop no longer put it to sleep. In fact, no action from within KDE would sleep my laptop; not selecting sleep from the kicker menu, nor selecting it from the power management widget would put my system to sleep. It seems like it's at least trying to go to sleep. It will deactivate the network like it usually does, but then a moment later it just reconnects, never actually getting as far as sleeping the system. It's not entirely clear to me what part of the chain isn't working, as I'm really not familiar with what all is involved in passing the sleep messages around. It was working one day, and then after a regular weekly full-upgrade it suddenly wasn't. What DOES work: Executing s2ram, s2disk or s2both as root will successfully sleep the system, so the hardware and kernel are all working as expected. -- Tony 'Nicoya' Mantler - Master of Code-fu -- nic...@ubb.ca -- http://www.ubb.ca/ -- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Linux is connected by PPPoE using eth0 to the Internet and the iPad should get access to the Internet by a Sempre WU300-1K USB adapter connected to the Linux PC. How are you managing your internet connection on the Debian machine? If it's Network Manager you can use it directly. If you are using ifupdown you'll need to tinker with hostapd and IP forwarding and (optional) some dhcp server (I prefer dnsmasq, because it also does DNS caching). Kind regards, Andrei At the moment I don't have Debian installed, but I'm willing to install it again, if it should make it easier to set up what I need. For my Ubuntu I made the connection by pppoeconf and NetworkManager is installed. Running # nm-applet doesn't show it in the Xfce panel's notification area, but running # nm-connection-editor does start a GUI. Thank you, I'll try NetworkManager. I wasn't sure if it doesn't need additional settings too. I'll try with Ubuntu first and if needed I'll install Debian. First I need to understand what I have to set. Thanks for posting this gem! However, I could be wrong, but I think there is a typo. Might just be how my web translation came across. The last command should be: $sudo apt-get purge $(aptitude search '?config-files' -F %p) No tick in front of the %p and a close-parenthesis at the end. One might also use the --dry-run option first as well just in case... I always use dpkg -l to get the list and then purge those. Using dpkg directly is s much faster that way. dpkg -l | awk '/^rc/{print$2}' And if that list looks reasonable then purge it. dpkg --purge $(dpkg -l | awk '/^rc/{print$2}') There are fancier ways to do it using fancier tools that are perhaps more precise and accurate instruments. Here is my favorite to get the same list as the above. grep-status -sPackage -n -FStatus deinstall ok config-files Thanks, good ones (although I wish that dpkg-query could search for config files like aptitude without resorting to awk...); especially this last search! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. It looks like there's some issue with the Firefox-acrobat reader plugin. I noticed this on other computers running Linux and Firefox, even on different distros and acroread versions. I am running Firefox 10.0.1., but have got the same problem on Firefox 10.0. I am running acroread 9.0 but tried with other versions as well. Thanks for any info. My first two questions are: 1) Do you really need Adobe Reader features or will Evince or Okular or similar work for you? Poppler-based PDF readers are really very good nowadays. This is my recommendation. acroread is non-free. Install evince or xpdf, and tell ICEWEASEL to use that. Works great here. +1 for Evince (never tried xpdf). Also check out mupdf - may not have as many features as Evince, but it's a delight to use. I'm not having any bloated proprietary crapware Ad*be Acr*bat here, thank you very much.
