No apareció network-manager. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-spanish-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.

But we don't know is the attacker a person or a program, which is running without knowledge of the owner of computer. Yes, it's more like a program. but the owner in this long period has never shutdown the computer, just a bit surprised that it keeps the same ip address. A DHCP client will normally remember its IP address, even if the lease has expired, and on the next connection will request it again. If the server hasn't issued it to anyone else, it will normally comply with the request. Both server and client can be configured not to do this, but in a Windows network it will probably happen to avoid too much need for scavenging out-of-date DNS records. Assuming the link between DNS and DHCP has been set up properly. Or it may be a configured reservation in the DHCP server i.e. some form of server itself. Or the client can be explicitly configured to request that address, when it is available, but there's very little reason to do that when a reservation is a guaranteed method. Even if the attacker in this case is a human, it may be difficult or impossible to override the network policies. Configuration of networking is limited to people with admin credentials, unprivileged users cannot even issue a DHCP renewal request other than by rebooting the machine. The quick answer here is to try: host IP address, which will turn up the hostname of the offending machine if the local DNS server is properly set up. Or to at least gain the MAC address of the machine, try inserting an iptables rule on your machine to log incoming ssh connections. $ host 172.21.48.161 Host 161.48.21.172.in-addr.arpa. not found: 3(NXDOMAIN) Nmap scan report for 172.21.48.161 Host is up (0.0021s latency). PuTTY is fine for low volumes, or you can probably find WinSCP which also uses ssh. PuTTY will not use OpenSSH keys (or it wouldn't last time I tried) but it will generate keys which OpenSSH can use. Some Windows FTP clients will also do SCP if pushed. If you have full control of non-domain Windows workstations, and many files to move, then samba is probably a good bet. I've had trouble with Windows domains, which tend to insist on higher security levels than a typical Linux samba server. I think samba tends to run about two server generations behind Microsoft. Finally, the RDP protocol does permit mapping local hard drive partitions into the client session, though I've never tried from a Linux client, I don't know if any can do it. That would presumably also use samba, but in a different manner than a straight network connection. That may be disabled by group policy in a domain environment, as it does constitute a significant security risk. -- Joe -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Problems with printing/scanning on Squeeze on a Lexmark aio
Hello, all! This is a cross-post. I posted to the Trinity list several days ago. It transpires that it is not a Trinity problem, so I am asking here. After a few days, if necessary, I shall go to the CUPS list. I have had the following cris de coeur from the user of a computer that I administer. The old system means Debian Lenny with KDE 3.5.10, which is still there on a separate partition and can be booted into from Grub. I had previously successfully installed Debian Squeeze with Trinity 3.5.12 on his wife's laptop without a problem, and it is running well, including printing and scanning. The installation for the wife was from scratch and there was nothing to restore. The husband had a lot to restore. The printer and scanner form part of an aio, a Lexmark Interact C605. The initial problem with the printer was that when I came to install it on a 64 bit system (Lenny had been 32 bit) I found that the driver was only available in a 32 bit version. I found a 64 bit driver - not on Lexmark's site, of course :-( - and all seemed to be well. The story carries on below in emails from the owner of the machines. I am baffled as to how a driver can work one minute and not the next. :-( I do hope that I haven't managed to install some sort of malware masquerading as a driver. 12/08/07 (yy/mm/dd) quote We still have some snags with the new system I'm afraid. 1)The scanner will not work although it still does in the old system so I know the scanner is working OK. 2)The printer works from e-mail OK except that it will not print attachments which are in PDF although I can read them aok. /quote 12/08/16 quote The printer which was working aok in the new system (apart from pdf format)has now ceased to function completely again although it is working still in the old system. /quote His wife can still print from her laptop. I had expected to find that the problem with the scanner was a matter of groups and permissions, but it would appear not; or anyhow, not entirely. Any suggestions for solutions, other than reinstall with 32 bit and Trinity 3.5.12, gratefully received. Though this is beginning to look like the only viable solution. I ought, of course, to have checked, before I abandoned 32 bit, that all the necessary drivers were available in 64 bit. :-( Thanks, Lisi -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: System crash, or lockup
On 20 August 2012 15:39, Marc Shapiro marcns...@gmail.com wrote: I have posted about this before, and one suggestion was that I have a power supply problem. This seems possible, even probably, for some of my problems, but not, I think, for all of them. Also, I have noticed additional types of problems since my last post. Please note: I have purchased a new power supply (with a higher wattage than my old one) but have not had time to install it, yet. This is on an up to date Squeeze box running gnome. Problem 1: The system goes down, the screen goes blank and then says it is not receiving a signal. This sounds like a power supply problem and I expect it will go away once I get the new power supply installed. Problem 2: The system simply locks up completely, with no notice, or warning. There is no response to the mouse, or keyboard. Prior to having hard drive problems (which caused me to replace the HD and reinstall) this would sometimes happen. When it did, I could usually ssh in do 'sudo chvt' and then I would be able to use the desktop again. On checking out the system, I would find that X had simply gone away on the VT that was displayed (but the screen still showed everything as it had been, just unresponsive. Since the reinstall, I have been unable to ssh to the box in the first place. I get a 'no route' error on my laptop when I try (yes, I can ssh in at other times). The only solution is a hard reboot. This does not seem to me to be power supply related. Problem 3 (NEW): The system mostly locks up. The mouse still moves, but there is no response to mouse clicks. The gnome panels go completely blank. Running programs do not respond to the keyboard, but I can 'chvt' to get to another X session (there are usually three sessions going at once on vt7, vt8 and vt9 for myself, my wife and my daughter. I can also chvt to console sessions. Once I have switched to another session, if I kill startx and xinit for the locked session (or sessions - sometimes two sessions will do this at the same time. I think that once, all three X sessions locked up this way but I was still able to 'fix' things from a console session.) then the sessions start to work, again. All applications have been killed, but the gnome panels are back to normal and the session responds to the mouse and keyboard. This sounds like a gnome problem. Has anyone else had a similar problem? I hope to get the time to install the power supply and (fingers crossed) solve prolem #1 tonight. Does anyone have any ideas on the cause of problems #2 and #3? I really don't expect the new power supply to solve them and they are just as much disruption as #1. Please help. This is very annoying. 1) Sounds like loss of video signal; if this is a desktop, check connections or try different (data) cable. 2) Maybe faulty ram. 3) Perhaps a lack of ram or swap space. -- Sent from FOSS (Free Open Source Software) Debian GNU/Linux -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: Nagios shows only one Host (Services)
On 18.08.2012 22:43, Camaleón wrote: I check that and there was only one process running. I stopped and started the Daemon anyway, but nothing changed. Ah, okay then. As you commented something about it was working fine in another instance, that triggered a light in my head :-) I have two machines running the Nagios Daemon. One for all internal machines, one for all external machines. From the configuration file you uploaded to Debian paste I only miss the definitions for services, is that correct? Unless they're set in a different configuraion file, there should be listed somewhere. Yes, it's rather long. Some Services are defined in services_nagios2.cfg, but most Services are defined in the Host configuration itself, example: define service{ use generic-service ; Name of service template to use host_name vm.local service_description Disk Space check_command check_nrpe_1arg!check_all_disks notification_interval 0 } define service{ use generic-service ; Name of service template to use host_name vm.local service_description VirtualBox WinXP IE6 check_command check_nrpe_1arg!check_vm_wxpie6 notification_interval 0 } define service{ use generic-service ; Name of service template to use host_name vm.local service_description VirtualBox WinXP IE7 check_command check_nrpe_1arg!check_vm_wxpie7 notification_interval 0 } define service{ use generic-service ; Name of service template to use host_name vm.local service_description VirtualBox WinXP IE8 check_command check_nrpe_1arg!check_vm_wxpie8 notification_interval 0 } I didn't post them as I don't think it has anything to do with the problem. Weird, yes. Maybe a problem/glitch coming from the web interface (the CGI script in charge of rendering the information) and not from Nagios itself. Can you generate a fake event to check if the reaction from Nagios is as expected in all levels? Events working fine. Warnings, Critical, Recovery, Acknowledge everything works as expected. So, yes, it might be just a CGI-Problem. Also, given you updated from Squeeze, it could be useful to review the Nagios logs and also starting, not from scratch but from a basic template and then adding new hosts/services to see how it goes, to discard a simple configuration issue that can be making noise. I've purged the Nagios installation (apt-get purge nagios*) and checked that all config files we're deleted. The I reinstalled Nagios (localhost was shown correctly). Then I just copied the dx_nagios2.cfg and the vm_nagios2.cfg into conf.d. Same problem as before. Also I compared the internal config with the external config (again) but can't see any difference. Beside from the Host-Config and the htpasswd.users it is identical, according to diff. Anyway I was able to narrow it down to one single config file (dx_nagios2.conf) but I can't see any flaw in it. The funny thing is, if I rename the host from dx.local to zdx.local everything works fine as the Host is the last Host to show up in Services. Strange, but I think I can live with that. But as other said, an ssh public key can't change on its own: somebody needs to have done something (IT, attacker, intern ;) or else there is a hardware failure. In any case, the only immediate action is to investigate as you did by plugging off the server. I followed the thread and I wonder why nobody recommended to change sshd to listen on any other port than 22, e.g. 2424. That will calm down most attacks / probing of ssh. Also I wondered why nobody recommended to install DenyHosts? I installed it on my OpenBSD gateway and it is quite funny to see which usernames and passwords are tried to get into the box. That was with sshd still listening on port 22. Now that it is on another port there were no probes whatever for about a year. Stupid hacking! Of course you need to inform your ssh users of the change. If the same machines on your own network still attack ssh than it should be easy to figure out which machine is doing that by looking at the MAC-address.
