I suggest writing a script to be called during the late_command that either does the configuration you want right then and there or plants a second script to do the configuration after the initial system reboot. In order to write that script you will need to know what changes you want to make to the system. And then script those changes. Preseed that in as the late_command. If you did not lock system with grub password, you can always login as root without password. Google with "grub init=/bin/bash mount" you get many howtos describing: Boot with init=/bin/bash or init=/bin/sh for GRUB. Then at root prompt mount -o remount,rw / to reset with "passwd". lightdm login screen minor issue
Good evening, I am trying to install a minimalist install with an XFCE desktop environment on an old laptop. I did a clean install of wheezy, and deselected all tasks during the install. I then booted and launched aptitude with the --without-recomends option, and installed the task-xfce-desktop task. The resulting environment was a bit less than I wanted, but I was able to get everything going, with one minor exception. At the login screen, there are two buttons in the top right-hand corner, one for switching hi-contrast and large fonts on or off, and the other for restarting or shutting the system down. That power "button" has no functionality to it. When I click on it, a blank panel opens and there is nothing to click on. I am at a loss trying to figure out what drives that missing functionality. Can anyone give me a nudge in the right direction? Thanks, Craig Sent - Gtek Web Mail -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Exactly. Knowing why something is/isn't being done goes a long way towards being more understanding of it. I use K-9 Mail on my Android phone because quite frankly, I find that as a mail client to let me access and send from all my various accounts, it just rocks. Unfortunately, when it comes to making a reply, it *sucks* rocks. :-) It really doesn't make it easy for you to do the quote-reply-quote-reply thing. So I've got an automatic signature line that it sends out, explaining that the message was sent from the phone app and to please excuse the lack of usual quote-reply conventions. That way, I don't get people lecturing *me* on the subject. So, Dick: Sorry to hear about the sucky mobile mail client for GMail, I feel for ya. :-) And sorry if I offended; it was not my intent. --Dave signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

It is a log scraper that every few minutes processes the log files and emails "interesting" log files to the admin. Interesting is defined as any line that does not match one of the list of regular expressions that are suppressed. Logwatch is annoying out of the box but extremely useful if tuned. It is annoying because there are so many messages logged that will be emailed to you. The default packaged set of rules is not comprehensive. But there are a very large number of possible messages logged and it would be too much to ask of it to suppress all of them across many of the packages. So out of the box it is very noisy. But if you spend the time to augment the rules with additional rules to suppress what is causing noise on your system then the result is very much on target. But this takes some effort. For me the effort is worth it. But I add 320 additional supression rules to make it usable to give you an idea of how much effort is needed. > Anyway, it's not convenient to use `more'. The syslog file format is three fields of date code followed by the hostname. This is followed by whatever is logged. Usually that will be the process name and process id number followed by whatever. If you are only interested in exim logs then look in the mail.log file for just exim logged messages. I don't use exim, postfix is my preference, but on systems with exim I think exim logs elsewhere too. But normally grep'ing for the process name is enough to extract all messages associated with that process. If you are having problems with exim then you might consider asking it here directly. I can't help though since I don't run it and don't know enough about it to answer questions about it. Bob signature.asc Description: Digital signature
