Jessie bug: mounting password protected share with thunar. Also affects systemd, glib.
Hey all, I've found a bug in Debian Jessie that is rather complex and I'm not sure against what package it should be filed. Affected packages are thunar, libglib2 and systemd. I have some password protected shares in my /etc/fstab that are mounted by unprivileged users, e. g. //192.168.1.2/Data /media/Data cifs vers=3.0,users,username=user,noauto,file_mode=0640,dir_mode=0750 0 0 When mounting the share with the 'mount' command a password is prompted as intended. However, mounting the share with thunar fails: Thunar shows unmounted but available volumes in its left sidebar. On the first access thunar tries to mount the share and a graphical password prompt *should* appear. Instead an error message is shown: Failed to create password file: Permission denied After some investigation I found out that the ask-password functionality from systemd is used. Therefore a file has to be created in /run/systemd/ask-password and password agents watching the directory might prompt for the password. See [1] for reference. Creating the password file fails, as /run/systemd/ask-password is only writeable by root. As this functionality is intended to be used for system-level passwords only, I guess it shouldn't be world writeable. To mount the volume, thunar seems to rely on libglib2 (Thunar calls g_volume_mount). See [2], [3] for the source code. I don't really understand how that code works and why systemd ask-password is used - I didn't manage to find the corresponding code. In the end there are two approaches to resolving this bug: 1) systemd ask-password is buggy and does not work as supposed 2) systemd should not be used in this scenario and either thunar or glib are to blame Maybe someone with more knowledge of systemd and/or gtk programming could look into this. Chais pas, trial and error, essaye! T’as des exemples ?

-- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-spanish-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Problem with accessing external USB HDD
Hello. I have an external USB HDD connected to a system running Debian 6 LTS. I have tried to transfer data from the desktop intenal HDD, to the external USB HDD. The file manager shows as being Nautilus 2.30.1. From time to time, as in this instance, I forget (until too late) that Debian 6 can not cope with transferring data more than about 1GB at a time; in this instance, I had tried to transfer about 3GB, to make room in my /home partition. The transfer had seized up, after transferring about 1.1GB of the 3.2GB that I had tried to ransfer, so, after a couple of days of it apparently doing nothing, I stopped it, and, as the system monitor showed a system load of around 43 (whatever that means - if it was as a percentage of system capacity, it could be more meaningful, to me). The system monitor currently shows a system load average of about 35. As I could not then save any files, due to the interaction with the external USB HDD, I tried to unmount the external USB HDD. I then got a dialogue box, that is still displayed, which displays Writing data to hp hard drive To prevent data loss, wait until this has finished befopre removing media or disconnecting the device. That dialogue box has been present, with its little bar thing flying backward and forward, for about thre or four days, now. After about a day, the external USB HDD unmounted. I have thence been able to save files to the system internal HDD, and, to move files on the system internal HDD. The external USB HDD does not show as being mounted, but, shows in the file manager, when the Computer icon in the file manage toolbar is selected. While the external USB HDD is displayed on that screen, in trying to mount the external USB HDD, to allow the write action to complete, I get the error message Unable to mount location A job is pending on /dev/sdf1 If I try to select the option, from the non-dominant mouseclick menu, Safely remove drive (as the external USB HDD is unmounted), I get the error mesage Unable to stop drive One or more partitions are busy on /dev/sdf so I can not mount the external USB HDD, to complete the write action, to write whatever data is waiting to be written to it, and, I can not safely remove the drive, as the data is waiting to be written to it. Whilst it may be said that I could simply unplug the external USB HDD, to terminate the connection, and, end the problem, from memory, in so doing, in the past, external USB HDD's are thence rendered unusable - written off, as is the data that has been written to them. So, is a way available, to solve this, without writing off the external USB HDD, and the data that has been written to it, and, the data that is floating in the ether, waiting to be written to it? Hello Sven and the other, thanks for help. I thought there is a simple and secure way to redirect to an 'This Site has been blocked' Page for HTTP and HTTPS. But when I must destroy the safety from HTTPS this isn't an option. It is a nice to have feature in my project, so the user can see this site has been blocked and there are no connection troubles (the browser error page). Greetings, Michael Sven Hartge s...@svenhartge.de wrote: Bob Proulx b...@proulx.com wrote: Sven Hartge wrote: Michael I. wrote: Is there really no way to redirect https request to an errorpage with squid3+squidguard? Long answer: The only way is to setup a transparent proxy, intercepting any outbound connection and terminating the encryption on the proxy. You will need a fake CA certificate with which the proxy is able to create fake server certificates so the client still thinks it is connected to the real server. And here it gets a) dangerous and b) expensive. It is extremely bad, bad, bad, as well as dangerous. I haven't been following the news in great detail but read all about Komodia's recent news articles. Komodia's cracking tools are used in Superfish and Lenovo was in trouble for pre-installing Superfish. There are network policy/security appliances in the enterprise world, which implement a scanning proxy for HTTPS. They come with a either a wildcard certificate for * (signed by a valid CA!) or a fake CA certificate, which you install onto your computers to enable the appliance to function. This is of course very dangerous if you don't know what you are doing, but sometimes there are no other options (for example HIPAA, SOX, PCI, ...) if you have to absolutley control the flow and content of data. But then, if you are in the area where you need such MitM-Filter-SSL-breaking-proxies, then you already know of how to do it and when to do it. If you don't know how to do it and when to do it, chances are, you don't need it. Guessing from Michaels TLD, he is German. This means there are several other things to consider, based on the environment this is done in. If this is for a company or govermental agency, the Betriebsrat (works council) or the Personlrat and the local Datenschutzbeauftragter (data security official) has to be involved.
-- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-spanish-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Setting up MTS MBlaze Ultra in debian squeeze 6.0.10
Hello, This is Tapas Das. I am a debian user since 3 years. Recently I collected MTS MBlaze Ultra (Model-AC2792) Modem. This is supposed to run in debian-6 according to the system specification given at http://www.indiamart.com/company/9316197/data-card.html The user manual supplied with the device says the requirement of gcc kernel-devel (or, corresponding kernel development package of the distribution) to be installed. In my system gcc is already installed and I was unable to identify the kernel development package. usb-modeswitch is already installed. As I plug in my device, it is recognized as a storage device...not as a modem. Please help me in this regard. Regards
