what you have and is available in Jessie is firefox-esr (Extended
Support Release). Version 45 is up to date.

Up to date version of firefox is 47, though, and probably the best way
to obtain it is the Debian way, which is explained here:
 http://mozilla.debian.net/

(be careful to select the Release version, not one of the Esr, Beta or
Aurora ones.)

Hi! All,

Anyway to enter UEFI Firmware Setup on contemporary UEFI W8/10 notebooks
without having to go through Windows? That is, is there a keyboard
combo, secret button or incantation whether or not a hard drive/OS is
installed. As far as my research goes, there's not.

I'm looking to buy a new notebook to put a custom install of Linux on
with as few problems as possible. Which distro remains to be
chosen, but it definitely WON'T be Ubuntu (I've always hated it) or
SUSE or Fedora which I abandoned because of its 6 month release cycles

Thanks.

Limiting internet access by time

2016-08-04 Thread Mark Fletcher
On a stretch box I have, I want to allow access to the Internet between the
hours of 9am and 9pm and block it between 9pm and 9am. Ideally allow local
network access throughout but block Internet access between 9pm and 9am,
but I can accept total network blockage in the off times if necessary.

The machine is used as a desktop, so it is not up all the time. It might be
brought up before 9am, in which case it should come up blocked and unblock
at 9am, or it may be brought up after 9am, in which case it should come up
unblocked and block if it is still up at 9pm. Time precision isn't
important.

An ideal solution would allow dhcp updates, ntp etc to continue but block
any normal user access eg web browsing etc.

I've got a solution in mind and would like to see if the community has any
better ideas.

I'm thinking of installing iptables, creating an iptables script that
blocks Internet access (not local addresses) except ntp and dhcp, and
another to open everything up again, and using a systemd service that runs
a script to check the time and run the appropriate iptables script. That
service then gets linked in multi-user.wants to get run at startup. Then
cron jobs can take care of the 9am and 9pm switch overs, calling the same
scripts as appropriate.

Is there a better way to do this?

soon as you return to the normal mythv menu system the text comes back.

repository uses weak digest algorithm (SHA1)

2016-08-04 Thread Matthias Bodenbinder
Hi,

I have a weird signature issue with an LMDE Mint repository. I know that this
is not pure debian but nevertheless I think my question is best posted here.

The issue is: I have 4 PC and 1 laptop at home. All running LMDE2. When I do
"apt-get update" the PCs have no issue. But the laptop says:

# last 2 lines of "apt-get update" output
W: http://linux-mint.froonix.org/dists/betsy/Release.gpg: Signature by key
E1A38B8F144675D060EA666F3EE67F3D0FF405B2 uses weak digest algorithm (SHA1)

E1A38B8F144675D060EA666F3EE67F3D0FF405B2 uses weak digest algorithm (SHA1)
##

I reinstalled all keyring debs on the laptop.

I am using the exact same sources on the laptop and the PCs (rsync of
/etc/apt/sources.list*). During the last test I even rsync'ed all
/etc/apt/trusted* to the laptop.

I tried to fetch it via apt-key:

##
# apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys
E1A38B8F144675D060EA666F3EE67F3D0FF405B2
Executing: /tmp/tmp.9xZlldxhO9/gpg.1.sh --keyserver
keyserver.ubuntu.com
--recv-keys
E1A38B8F144675D060EA666F3EE67F3D0FF405B2
gpg: requesting key 0FF405B2 from hkp server keyserver.ubuntu.com
gpg: key 0FF405B2: "Clement Lefebvre (Linux Mint Package Repository v1)
" not changed
gpg: Total number processed: 1
gpg: unchanged: 1
##

But the laptop keeps throwing these signature warnings - and only the laptop.
Why is that?

Thank you for your help.

`debget`

Scratchy, Noisy Music Playback

2016-08-04 Thread Thomas H. George

The Solution: Kill Gnome (Alt-SysRq-K) and play ogg file from terminal.

The Problem: An ogg file played with Audacity or with ogg123 sounded
terrible.

System is Jessie with standard debian packages installed

The ogg file was created from a cd with jack and was intended for an
sdcard for my car's entertainment system. I first played it from my
computer with Alsa line out to a fairly decent stereo system. The
playback was noisy, sounded like it was made from a worn out lp.

The cd played from my home entertainment system sounded fine. The ogg
file played from my car's entertainment system was ok.

What was wrong with my computer?

When a click from the stereo connected to the computer signaled the
arrival of an email I realized a computer sound system was running all
the time. What ever it is stopped when I killed Gnome.

Perhaps this is old hat, known to all. If so, there may be better
solutions than killing Gnome. If so, I would like to know these
solutions or be pointed appropriate discussions of the subject.

David, that is unfair. I argued one thing only. That what you are saying
refers to you and FVWM and not to everybody.

It does not apply to the software I use. Why on earth are you so determined
to argue? I know nothing about FVWM and have never claimed to do so. You
told me that I was wrong in what I said, when I was not. I argued against
that. I did not claim that it referred to FVWM. In the DE I use, which I
have used for 12 years through a name change, I use desktops and can move
things from one desktop to another in the desktop preview and pager, in the
panel, by drag and drop. I can then go the relevant desktop and there it is.
You can tell me that I am wrong all you like, it will not make me wrong. Do
stop arguing for the sake of it. IT IS NOT FVWM and I never said that it

I apologise. I read line three of the OP which said 'Using FVWM'.

I then asked for clarification, which may have mystified people who
don't use a WM as flexible and configurable as fvwm. That flexibility
requires terms to describe it. Imagine you'd never seen xinerama and
had just come across it. You would need a term to distinguish it from
the multiple disjoint desktops that I mentioned at the start of my
second post (for which I my workaround would not work).

> Go and argue with someone about folders and directories.

They are effectively synonyms in this context. We (I) was trying to
discuss features that are superficially similar but have critical
differences in their behaviour.

Reviewing your posts, the first sympathetically commiserated with the OP,
the rest seemed to be arguing with those who knew something about fvwm
and were trying to comment on the problem and its possible amelioration.

Cheers,
David.

Yes, that's normal behaviour. It is, of course, a race because you
might not make it all the way to the desired location.

Sometimes fvwm can get tripped up itself. When I start X, I map
22 xterms on the 20 pages (xterm terminology). Occasionally, the first
xterm will map on Page: 0 0 before fvwm has managed to switch to
Page: 4 3 (I map them in turn from bottom right to top left).

The tool that allows me to map so many so quickly is xtoolwait, for which
I still have to run the squeeze version.

That sounds as if you're usingStyle * ManualPlacement
which requires you to click to place the window when its frame
appears (tethered to the cursor). I used to use that years ago but
prefer Style * TileCascadePlacement nowadays.

Applications can dodge being placed manually if thy specify their
own geometry specifically.

But I thought I would point out one detail in the workaround I gave.
In the lines

+ I All ('*Mozilla Firefox*') PipeRead '/bin/cat ${HOME}/.fvwm/move-firefox'
+ I All ('*Chromium*') PipeRead '/bin/cat ${HOME}/.fvwm/move-chromium'

the string is a pattern, so the asterisks at each end allow for the
frequent changes in the Window Title that occur as you navigate
the web. (You probably only need to first *.)

Cheers,
David.

Boa tarde .

Reading The Funderful Manual:

Fvwm provides both, a large virtual desktop and multiple disjoint
desktops which can be used separately or together. The virtual desktop
allows you to pretend that your video screen is really quite large, and
you can scroll around within the desktop. The multiple disjoint
desktops allow you to pretend that you really have several screens to
work at, but each screen is completely unrelated to the others.

  [...]

The screen is a viewport onto a desktop which may be larger than the
  screen. [...]
each desktop can be larger than the physical screen, divided into m by n
pages which are each the size of the physical screen [...]

I understand that the New Revised debian-user Terminology translates

Workspace = Virtual desktop (one of multiple disjoint desktops)

Viewport = Page of a virtual desktop (actually one can let the screen
show neighboring parts of four pages)

I own a single 4x2 pages sized workspace. In most cases i use stickiness
and pager rather than dragging windows from page to page.

It was configured that way by whoever created the FVWM config file you
are using. When I started using FVWM there were neither panes nor
desktops. I don't remember when they came in, but I think that the
virtual display was first. There are zillions of example configurations
out there and some sort of default config is included in the Debian
package. You can easily add more panes to your desktops and change the
number of desktops by editing .fvwm/config. FVWM is almost infinitely
configurable. My config is a horrifically encrusted thing that has been
evolving for twenty years. I really should just re-write it. It's
uglier than my .emacs.

Sound troubles on crashed Jessie on Skylake

2016-08-04 Thread Lisi Reisz
My husband's box, Jessie with Skylake, is still recovering from being
summarily turned off in mid-stream.

I have been trying to get sound reworking.

I did:

peter@Nyx-II:~/Music$ pacmd set-default-sink 1
No PulseAudio daemon running, or not running as session daemon.
peter@Nyx-II:~/Music$ pulseaudio -k
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Failed to kill daemon: No such process
peter@Nyx-II:~/Music$ pulseaudio --start
peter@Nyx-II:~/Music$ pacmd set-default-sink 1
peter@Nyx-II:~/Music$ aplay prayer2.wav
Playing WAVE 'prayer2.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 44100 Hz, Mono

And I had sound! Consistently! Across everything! But I had the impression
that it might be temporary. I had done nothing to start anything on
start-up. So I restarted the computer. No sound. Did:

peter@Nyx-II:~$ pulseaudio --start
peter@Nyx-II:~$ pacmd set-default-sink 1
peter@Nyx-II:~$ cd Music/
peter@Nyx-II:~/Music$ aplay prayer2.wav

And the authors of the software (DE) I use, use the term desktop, and have
done for many years - I have been using them for twelve - , which you are
correcting, for what you appear to be calling "viewports and desktops".
My "desktops" appear to be both. :-/ Incidentally, I can have 20 if I want.
(I currently have six).

I accept, since he has done himself, that the OP "misused" workspace, but at
the point I responded to his query that was not evident.

Moreover, workspace in that meaning is sanctified by Wikipedia, so a good many
people use it.

Yes, that is correct: it is mapping relative to the viewport rather than
to the display (I should have written "pane" rather than "viewport" as
in FVWM jargon the viewport is what the physical screen shows while a
"pane" is a section of the desktop). However, I have also had programs
pop up a window in a pane that is not in the viewport. My wife has a
Javascript thing that does it consistently.

Ok, but that is confusing when discussing FVWM.

I've been using FVWM for about twenty years. As David says, each FVWM
desktop (sometimes called a workspace) is a separate X display. Getting
windows from one to another is, in my experience, not possible. A
desktop can be much larger than the physical screen: it's a virtual
screen. The viewport is properly the physical screen and can be moved
around the desktop smoothly or in steps. It is common to divide each
desktop into panes (sometimes confusingly called viewports, workspaces,
or even desktops) and arrange for the viewport to "snap" from one pane
to the next. Thus the viewport is often a porthole into a large virtual
screen. Some programs may be using the wrong mapping request so that the
window is located relative to the virtual screen rather than the
physical one. This is a bug, of course, but you won't see it if your
virtual screen equals the physical screen, as is the usual case with
most window managers.

I would not make excuses for Confucius, he did not live in a time where
we can send a message from small town West Virginia, USA, to Ulan Bator,
Mongolia in a few hundred milliseconds. While he was an excellent
observer and commentator of his times, he was also subject to the speed
of communications.

The right "name" in my mind now has at least 10 aliases per name
dependent on the locale of the speaker, and its those who do not learn
that, are those which will find themselves left behind.

OTOH, the spoken version of what we both write and call English, is not
as easily understood as the regional accents are much more different
when spoken.

sistema se queja diciéndome, can't add wlan0 on bridge br0: operación no
soportada.

hace.

Me entiendes ahora? :)

# iw list

(...)
Available Antennas: TX 0 RX 0
Supported interface modes:
 * IBSS
 * managed
 * AP
 * AP/VLAN
 * WDS
 * monitor
 * mesh point
(...)

interferencias.

Provided that everyone agrees on what the names mean. In this case, as

I once got an email asking me to check the check and check the list if it was

opened, move the cursor to the desktop and viewport where I wanted it to
open and click on it, and it would open in that location. However, that
is by design. It opened exactly where required.

Stay well,

After contemplation, my reply is:

So there are four desktops labelled as described in my previous post,
and the four within those labelled desktops are called view ports.

Thank you for that clarification.

In the words of Confucius:

All wisdom is rooted in learning to call things by the right name. When
things are properly identified, they fall into natural categories and
understanding becomes orderly.
.Confucius

So my original post should have read:

Chromium jumps onto different desktops and view ports, at random and as
it pleases. Not on the view port of the desktop on which it was opened.

Thank you.

Be well,
Charlie

Debian.

Espero que isso ajude.

After contemplation, my reply is:

I have always known them as desktops, workspaces also feels right.

There are 16 of these, divided into 4 X 4. The first 4 are headed
FVWM, the second four Development, the third four Internet and the
last are labelled Misc. You can mouse drag open packages within the four
desktops of each section, but not into the next four or any other of the
12 desktops.

I'm unsure when this was so programmed. In the old times one could
mouse drag open packages into any desktop. There were no hard no go
fences between them.

Through my .xsession I have 3 xterms open on my first, one of four
desktops in that first group. Three of the desktops in that group of
four remain empty, till I open something in them

All the other sections with four desktops remain empty and I open
packages in them, as needed as I work.

Probably not explained too well, but it's late and I am weary.

Regards the original post, without using devilspie2, chromium is
staying now in the desktop where it is opened. BUt tomorrow is another
day.

Be well,
Charlie

Hello all.

Debian 8.4 sgtreamer 1.4.4 plugin "rtmpvdepay" (gstreamer plugins-good

The particular fix is available in gstreamer git repository.

May be an update for this package is needed for Debuian releases 8.4/8.5 ?
Could one expect gstreamer update will be released in Debian repository?

It seems that several of us are experiencing this issue. Here I am using
the same environment that you (KDE + Icedove in Debian Jessie, all
updated to the latest versions). Although on the references you mention
seems not to be something related to the desktop environment, because
there was also someone with XFCE who had the same problem.

I'm not sure if I began to see this after the last update or before, but
I can say that quite some time and became something a little annoying.

Doing some tests running Icedove from a console, it seems that a
segmentation fault occurs.

Doing some debug based on this document [1], I found several reasons for
this:

* A file not found:

-
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
nsHTMLCSSStyleSheet::~nsHTMLCSSStyleSheet
(this=this@entry=0x7fffc75fd380, __in_chrg=)

42
/build/icedove-tNL3mB/icedove-45.1.0/mozilla/layout/style/nsHTMLCSSStyleSheet.cpp:
No such file or directory.
-

* Some kind of problem related to libxul:

-
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0x74a2f550 in vtable for nsDisplayXULImage () from
/usr/lib/icedove/libxul.so
-
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0x74a09fd0 in vtable for nsDisplayBackgroundImage () from
/usr/lib/icedove/libxul.so
-

* I'm not sure what happened here:

-
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0x in ?? ()
-

Unfortunately I had the head working on other things and left this issue
a little aside for the moment.

Have you installed some add-on? Here I'm using Enigmail, Iceowl, Inverse
SOGO Connector and Provider for Google Calendar (I do not remember to
have installed the the Google Calendar add-on so maybe it was some
automatic dependency).

Kind regards,
Daniel
