Unfortunately removing `-' didn't helped.

Bingo! This helped runuser instead of su.

 su - $DBUSER -c [...]
to
 runuser -c [...] $DBUSER

On the flipside, it will be my immediate open [program] that won't
work. Well, the program AND the keyboard. I think someone MIGHT have
mentioned that recently... or not? Maybe it was me trying to chime in
and then "ran out of words" again

I accidentally stumbled on a fix in my case. Click anything in the top
toolbar so that something else takes priority in the screen. Click
back to whatever was opened previously, and the keyboard is back to
working 100% as expected.

Normally I can at least guess at what might be going on under the
hood, but that one is a little different right there.

As of about 12 hours ago, I have been blessed to be able to be back
working on a desktop PC. The hang thing hasn't happened once yet after
MANY suspends so I'm back to my old mantra that some combination of
battery power AND memory usage is in play in at least some of these
kinds of instances

Although... yes, absolutely and indeed.

*Or not.* :)

As I proofread that before clicking "Send", the same thought occurs to
me that always does. Maybe there's some way to monitor what's going
on... and then "teach" Debian to come back up for air in small,
logical increments rather than all at once

Or something like that there.

Yeah, that might end up being a nanosecond slower than normal but
that nanosecond slower is a whole lot better than the kind of
"lockdowns" that some of us regularly experience..

Just thinking out loud again from ye ol' Pickens County.. :)

Something I learned about latex - never touch a running system!

better put all of this in a change rooted environment and never touch it.
everything else leads to hours of configuring and testing the results.

I've been and I am still pretty lucky to own and use one Nokia N9 and last
year got Intex AquaFish. The former is amazing device based on MeeGo, the
latter working just great with newer SailFish!

For now the only really usable substitute to iOS and Android out there.
Support Jolla and their community and pray they manage a break through. I
am just a fan of Jolla, not an employe or in whatever way connected to
them. I am following this through the years and it is like David against
Golliat. For now Golliat wins, but David is still not defeated completely.

If someone wants to help build a real FSOS for a phone, join and support
their community. Don't waste your time for nothing. What for would I use
debian on my phone exactly? What desktop environment is suitable on a
phone? Where are the drivers for the hardware?

I've seen such enthusiasts in the past ... what happened to all promised OSs
for smart phones? Dead.

If someone knows how to build OS for a smart phone this should be Nokia or
better ex-Nokia and they really deliver ... still things to improve, but
not just promises and shiny photos of useless stuff, hobby-hacking and
waste of time. What is exactly the benefit?

Do not understand me wrong, I wish those guys luck ... but I doubt it will
bring something.

2017-07-15 Thread Thierry Bugier Pineau
Bonjour

me tourner vers rdiff-backup.

D'avance merci.

fontconfig in stable en testing

2017-07-15 Thread Sjoerd Hiemstra
eerste vraag:

--
Please select the preferred method for tuning fonts for screen
rendering.

Select 'Native' if you mostly use DejaVu (the default in Debian) or any
of the Microsoft fonts. Select 'Autohinter' if you mostly use other
TrueType fonts. Select 'None' if you want blurry text.

Font tuning method for screen (system default):
Native
Autohinter
None
--

Gelukkig is daar 'Native', daardoor

voorkwam:

--
Please select the preferred automatic font hinting style to be used
as the system default.

The hinting style is the amount of font reshaping done to line up to
the grid. "Slight" will make the font more fuzzy to line up to the grid
but will be better in retaining font shape, while "Full" will be a
crisp font that aligns well to the pixel grid but will lose a greater
amount of font shape. "Slight" is the default setting.

To revert to the pre-2.12 behavior, select "Full".

Automatic font hinting style:
None
Slight
Medium
Full
--

That should still work, but I see it uses the ancient interface alias
notation (like eth0:1). The example given there can be rewritten to a
more modern form:

allow-hotplug eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 37.100.195.4/22
gateway 37.100.192.1

iface eth0 inet static
address 46.38.240.15

iface eth0 inet6 static
address 2a03:4000:2:11c5::1/64
gateway fe80::1

Note that the netmasks and broadcast addresses are gone, and you can
have multiple inet stanzas for the same interface.

> > DestinationNext Hop Flag Met Ref
> > Use If
[...]
> > ::/0   fe80::1UGDAe 1024 3   0
> > eth0

The flags field contains the letter 'e', which means that this route
expires. This is added by the kernel, most likely because the gateway
address is not inside 2a03:4000:2:11c5::/64, and will cause it to remove
the route after a while. This looks like the same issue reported in
Debian bug #378506, which is fixed in stretch.

The workaround is to remove the gateway fe80::1 statement, but to add
this instead:

up ip -6 route add default via fe80::1 dev $IFACE onlink

During the upgrade, light-locker package is installed as a depends. I
had to purge xscreensaver to get the locking/blanking capability
previously available prior to the upgrade.

XFCE Menu -> settings -> power manager -> Display tab to manage "Blank
after" settings.

Good luck!

Thanks for the explanation. That sounds very reasonable. Unfortunately,
I did not find any relevant warnings/errors in the kernel logs.

What should be my next steps? I don't even know which system component I
would file a bug on: The kernel? Or systemd? Or some application that

moderncv class does not compile in Debian Stretch

2017-07-15 Thread Andrea Neroni
Hello everybody,
I used to have a personal cv written using the moderncv class from the package
texlive-latex-extra,
compiled using pdflatex. After upgrading to Stretch it seems that moderncv
class is using
/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/latex/fontawesome/fontawesome.sty

that in turn uses
/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/latex/fontspec/fontspec.sty

that can only be compiled in XeLateX or LuaLatex. Fine.
Installed texlive-xetex and compiled using xelatex. This error now pops up

LaTeX Warning: You have requested package `moderncvheadiii',
   but the package provides `moderncvheadiii'.

) (/usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/tex/latex/moderncv/moderncvbodyiii.sty

LaTeX Warning: You have requested package `moderncvbodyiii',
   but the package provides `moderncvbodyiii'.

! Undefined control sequence.
 \tiny \faCircleO

Now, to my questions. Why is Xelatex now required, what changed in the class?

How can I solve the latter error? I believe it could be a bug in the moderncv
class,
should I report it to package maintainers?

Thanks in advance to anybody answering!

802.3ad or LACP does *not* round-rob the packages across the individual
links nor does it any kind of load-balancing based on traffic. The
distribution is static and deterministic, based on the hashing policy
you select on both the server and the switch. But any one data flow can
only ever run over one NIC and one NIC alone, which is why your netperf
tests caps at 112MB/s.

The normal hashing function for a layer2-based approach is like this:

  (src-MAC XOR dst-MAC) modulo numer-of-NICs-in-bond

You selected a hash policy consisting of layer3 (IP) and layer4 (TCP/UDP
Port) on your servers, which will cover the outgoing packages but I
don't see you configuring the same policy on the switch.

The default configuration for most switches is to use a hash based on
layer2 (MAC address).

This means if you are really unlucky and depending on the MAC addresses
of you servers, the hashing might put every packet on the same NIC.

How to improve this:

a) Select a hash policy which involves the IP. You already did this for
the bond interface on the servers, you also have to do this on the
   switch.

b) Make sure to use consecutive IPs for the CEPH bond. For example:
   server1 gets x.x.x.11, server2 x.x.x.12 and server3 x.x.x.13
This way you make sure not all packages between servers are put on
   the same NIC (or NICs).

Grüße,
Sven.

Educational only if are printing text files. Most people print from Qt
and GTK applications, so the file sent to cups is either PostScript or
PDF. Your -o cpi=10 added to lp(r) is worth a try. It is a CUPS thing
and could give acceptable output.

The root problem likely lies with the texttopdf filter of cups-filters.
(which is a topic on the Printing section of the wiki). texttopdf uses
fontconfig to choose a monospaced font for printing a text file and the
way it goes about it has changed. On an A4 page it would probably go
unnoticed but on a label it doesn't. The trick is in getting texttopdf
to use the font you want.

Bonding not using all 3 interfaces?

2017-07-15 Thread Florius

Hello,

I'm setting up a Ceph storage with Proxmox 5.0 beta, based on Debian
Stretch.
It's based on 3 Dell PowerEdge R610's, bonded with 3 NIC's. (I'll get
back on this in a bit), all 3 with PERC H700 and RAID1 Kingston SSD.
Writing speeds directly on the SSD give me roughly 300MB/s (which is
still slow, as it should reach 500MB/s).

The switch they are connected to is a HP PowerConnect 2824

The issue I'm having is that when I test my storage speeds I'm only
getting 80MB/s via Ceph.
If testing directly with netperf I'm getting 112MB/s. (I followed the
following guide for testing:
https://blog.codecentric.de/en/2014/03/ceph-object-storage-fast-gets-benchmarking-ceph/)

I have setup bonding, exactly the same on all 3 nodes. All configs can
be found below.
I tried using 'mtu 9000' in the config, but then I got packet loss and
total connection loss. Unkown what's causing it but I disabled it again.

Anyone that might have a clue what I'm doing wrong/what is wrong with
the setup?

Note: Current setup will be for testing only, once everything is
succesfull we will invest in 10G NIC's.

funding & viability questions of GPL enforcement.

2017-07-15 Thread Bradley M. Kuhn
Bruce, your analysis ignores the political forces that have allied to thwart
GPL enforcement efforts. If Conservancy did not face these anti-enforcement
politics regularly, Conservancy could and would spend more time working on
bringing more companies into compliance.

I hope you'll review my FOSDEM keynote [0] and LibrePlanet talk [1] (the
latter of which was covered on LWN [2]), wherein I discuss the political
efforts by many others who seek to end GPL enforcement. I hope you'll
assist us in that political struggle, rather than shaming and blaming the
one organization who actually enforces the GPL for Linux, Debian, Samba, and
many other projects.

Bruce wrote yesterday on debian-user:
> [Conservancy] may have allowed itself ... to be in the position of
> suppressing developer's rights.

Rather than suppressing developers' rights (as you accused of us above),
Conservancy has created the only welcoming coalition of Linux copyright
holders [3] who wish to enforce, adhering to community principles. The
wealthy and powerful who seek to end GPL enforcement view our coalition as
the primary threat to their goal. That's why they invest inordinate
resources into thwarting Conservancy's enforcement efforts.

Bruce also wrote yesterday on debian-user:
> it would be fair for these dual-licensing companies, who offered the GPL
> but made dual licensing available to those who did not wish to accept the
> GPL terms, to exact the fees of lost commercial licensing from commercial
> infringers. Those infringers clearly had paid licensing as an option.

Meanwhile, these aggressive enforcement-centric business models function
precisely because their central tenant *discourages* sharing and
modification of the code under the copyleft license. The typical goal of
those models is to frighten "customers" into buying a non-copyleft license.
While you're correct that they generate revenue, I don't believe that the
goal of copyleft was to create an ecosystem where most users operate under a
proprietary license that they were cajoled to accept -- under threat of
overly captious for-profit enforcement.

You also mentioned the "revenue model" of lawsuits. While perhaps Patrick
McHardy gained some amount of personal wealth (although reports on how much
he's really recovered are unreliable rumors), that was only successful
precisely because McHardy's enforcement did not prioritize encouraging
compliant behavior. (In fact, his model required discouraging such
behavior, because (in his settlement agreements that I've seen) his larger
recoveries came from confused violators who agreed to pay larger amounts if
found out of compliance again later.) Such types of lawsuits are a serious
problem. That's why Conservancy was first to criticize McHardy [4], and why
Conservancy worked with the Netfilter team to encourage them to (a) also
denounce McHardy's activity [5] and (b) endorse the Principles of
Community-Oriented GPL Enforcement [6].

Note that those Principles don't say that damages should never be sought in
lawsuits, but rather, that *prioritizing* revenue over compliance is a
problem. You can see on Conservancy's past Form 990s that Conservancy has
received revenue from GPL enforcement. What I think those of you who have
not actually engaged in litigation don't realize is that when you face a
large bankroll on the Defendant's side, you take on real financial risk in
litigation. Even though most Courts will award attorney's fees and costs
*at the end*, a small charity bringing litigation must consider carefully
what happens while the years of litigation and appeals continue, during
which the Defendant funds the best legal and political power that money can
buy to try to crush you. The copyright system is rigged against the small
entity, so we must be agile, creative, and twice as diligent to succeed.

So, Bruce, I'm more frustrated than anyone that GPL violations are rampant
and we've not found in our community an effective way to fund enforcement
such that GPL violations become rare rather than common. But -- even though
every time I walk into an electronics store, I see a rows of GPL-violating
products -- I don't think it justifies abandoning our Principles, or taking
unnecessary risks. Furthermore, we already have initiatives like McHardy's
and we don't see increased compliance as a result. Thus, even if we wanted
to pursue enforcement driven by avarice, such has already been shown not to
achieve what matters most -- more software freedom for users and developers.

Bruce wrote further on debian-user:

Bruce, please don't spread this disinformation; I know many are saying it,
and you probably heard it from others, but it's just incorrect. The appeal
in Hellwig v. VMware is active in the German courts [7]. Everyone knows
that legal appeals take a very long time. We just have to wait and keep
funding the lawyers until it's done.

20 days of me trying to do something to an unrooted tablet and
the verdict is that you can not make a computer system out of
cat dish (used to be frisbie). For a rooted system you pay big
bucks, might as well get one of those gadgets with free open
architecture. At least you will know what your hardware will
be transmitting to your "enemies".
On an unrooted device with secret hw-code all you can do is
run something within an android compartment/sandbox.
More than half the machine's resources are already occupied
running the sandbox area (like gnuroot or termux). Start with
a cheap low resource machine and by the time you get gnuroot
ready to direct a Gui to a GFXserver program, either the one or
the other crashes with lack of resources. Then you open
your windows if you are lucky and 90% of the stuff will not run
in this pseudo linux/debian environment.
Systemd is having a fit as it sweeps most of the left over resources
before you even run anything.
It is amazing how something SO STUPID can be marketed to
become as esential as underware. My 6510i still sounds crystal
clear, and does all a phone is meant to do.

2017-07-15 Thread Jason Wittlin-Cohen
You are running an out-of-date version of samba (2:4.2.14+dfsg-0+deb8u6
vs. 4.2.14+dfsg-0+deb8u7+b1). In addition, you seem to be missing
samba-common-bin, samba-dsdb-modules, and python-samba, all of which are
dependencies of samba.

Try 'sudo apt-get install --reinstall samba'

If that doesn't include install the removed packages, run, 'sudo apt-get
install samba-common-bin samba-dsdb-modules python-samba'

Hi, thanks for the help to all.
apt-get upgrade/update installed nothing. Therefore I presume that I
have the latest updates.

I tried to restart the Samba server:

root@robbe:/var/log/samba# systemctl restart smbd.service

Querying the status gives:

the error occurred. The log files are (the bigger ones are truncated):

There were samba updates for jessie yesterday. First one was broken on
some systems so maybe it will help to do an upgrade again.

is samba running? If yes, any messages in the log?

best regards
Ulf

Samba had 2 security updates, first one had messed up dependencies and
second one solved that. Perhaps you just updated first one and need to
do update/upgrade again to catch up second one?

SAMBA problems on Debian 8.8

2017-07-15 Thread Hans Kraus

Hi,

yesterday, 14. July, about 9:30 pm my SAMBA shares on Debian simply
stopped working. I did not do anything on the system.

When I now try to connect to them from Windows 8.1 I do not see them
in the "Connect Network Drive" window.

When I enter the address manually I get the error "The connection isn't
accepted from the remote device ...".

All texts are my translations from German, so the will be only
approximately correct.

Any advice for me and what debug info shall I supply?

Kind regards,
Hans

interesting: Linux on Android

2017-07-15 Thread Dan Ritter

Not yet a Debian on Android, but:

https://ollieparanoid.github.io/post/50-days-of-postmarketOS/

summarizes the first 50 days of building Linux directly for
several smartphones, with the intention of eventually getting
them fully functional. Their work could lead to a Debian
flavor/spin/whatever it's called now.

Personally, I would be pretty happy to run Debian on a phone
instead of the giant pile of Java sitting on an old kernel that
currently constitutes Android.

Xfce Power Management Problem in Sketch

2017-07-15 Thread Stephen P. Molnar

I have just upgraded by Linux platform to v-9.0.0 from v-8.8.0.

Xfce Power Management fails to blank the display.

I have not been able to find a solution and would appreciate some
assistance.

Thanks in advance.

Today, at 7:57 UTC o'clock both links worked for me.

The blog page mainly states a procedure which worked also on other devices like
the older Oregon: the firmware file is copied via USB onto the device into the
"/Garmin/" directory under the name "gupdate.gcd". When the device is restarted,
this new firmware file get's installed.

2017-07-15 Thread Thierry Bugier Pineau
Bonjour
