While researching a similar bug [1] on my EEEpc (similar in the sense

System Freezing

2019-03-30 Thread Martin Marais
Greetings all.

Never logged a bug before and need advice where to log this particular case.

I have been having issues with my Debian system freezing on my PC - see
specs below - same issue after reinstall on 3 different SSDs including a
USB install with only CherryTree and Keepassx installed beyond standard
clean install (nothing else configured or customized). Happens on KDE,
Gnome and XFCE. The system would run for random times and then freeze
solid with nothing working, not even other terminal sessions - NOTHING.

Have had to switch to QubesOS which runs fine without any issues.

The same Debian install works fine on macbookpro 8.1 (I install Debian
on the desktop hardware and just swap the SDD in the mac and it works
perfectly - just need wireless driver installed. PS it blew my mind when
I found this worked for my particular machines! Debian kicks ass!)

I've checked logs before and could not see anything unusual (not that I
am log pro) (will see if I can get some more logs for upload). When it
freezes all logging is lost so I don't expect it to be useful.

Freezing issue happened with both current Radeon X1950 PRO and R9 280x
Sapphire.

Debian install was amd64 9.8.0 but it started happening around January
on previous versions. I suspected it was something hardware related as I
was overseas and came back my R9 died - but I doubt it is hardware since
QubesOS is working without issues.

Debian template on QubesOS also works fine.

Apologies. There's almost always something omitted when pasting from

noremap  :call NList_toggle()

A more meaningful function name would be better, too.
(but important here is only the connection, and the toggling, for the

Systemd's journal is keeping track of logs for every system boot. You
can check them individually with "journalctl":
$ journalctl --list-boots  # Will display a list of logs
available for previous boots.
$ journalctl --boot  # Will display logs for current boot session.
$ journalctl --boot -1     # Will display logs for previous boot
session. -2 will display logs for previous session before -1.

A netinstaller image for Buster(testing)?

2019-03-30 Thread Richard Owlett

I've been asked to test some software which depends on items in Buster.
For personal reasons I'm exploring doing a very minimal install.
I was going to combine the two tasks by installing CLI only followed by
installing desired portions of a DE.

I went looking for an amd64 netinst image. All I could find DVD 1-4
images (DVD1 now downloading).

Did I miss something? As a wish-list item - I think it would be nice to
have a path to testing information on the home page. YMMV

In the meantime I discovered this in syslog:
Mar 30 09:57:05 hostname nfs-kernel-server[494]: Not starting: portmapper is
not running ... (warning).

Any ideas what to look for for why rpcbind and/or portmapper and/or
'whatever else' is not starting on boot? Most articles I've read on
setting up nfs server make it sound like it should just work, and that
has indeed been my experience on other systems, but on the RPi
something seems to be missing or misconfigured.

Thanks,

I've found that sshfs is a whole lot less trouble to setup and make work.
I am using it between 4 wheezy machines and a raspian jessie.

Except for some x niggles, it all Just Works. As the usr #1.

Help updating a Jessie installation to Jessie LTS

2019-03-30 Thread rh kramer
I already made an attempt, and I'm a little worried that I may have messed
things up -- I'd like to try to recover and get back to a reliable Jessie
system.

What I did and why:

I understood from some other posts on the list that the mirrored
repositories for Wheezy and Jessie went away in early March, so (for
Jessie) I found a post that told me what the content of
/etc/apt/sources.list should be for Jessie LTS.

I then ran apt-get update and apt-get upgrade below are the results.

I think I know how to fix one part of the problem -- I think I need to
remove the references to jessie-updates from the sources.list file. But,
I'm fairly sure that won't solve what looks to me like the bigger problem:

root@s31:~# apt-get upgrade
Bus errorackage lists... 1%
root@s31:~#

Oh, an extra credit question: are there mirrors I can use for Jessie LTS or
must I use debian.org? If there are mirrors I can use, where would I find
those?

Here is what I put in the sources.list file:

from an email: On 2019-03-26, Pierre Fourès wrote:
...

For Jessie LTS "/etc/apt/sources.list should look like this one:"

There are many thousands of examples of people who got certain jobs
because of their open source and free software contributions (maybe
Linus Torvalds is one of the best-known examples), but of course it is
never a guarantee. This obviously applies to companies that have their
own open source projects, but some other companies & organisations
(including some that are non-IT in some cases) will also value the
experience you gained.

For full time education places, do you mean something like a
scholarship? That would be useful in places where university
educations are expensive, of course, but I don't know if there exist
any such scholarships right now. Maybe someone else knows more about
this?

Liveusb w/ persistent data

2019-03-30 Thread Joe B
Hello,

I’ve asked this on irc a number of times but links and answers I try are
usually outdated or simply don’t work

I want to make a bootable buster with persistent data so it saves my
settings whenever I reboot.

Looking for links I haven’t tried or steps that could help out.

Any help is appreciated

Thanks
