debian add mirror after installation

2023-08-09 Thread Weijun Lu
Hello.
When using the debian12 dvd disc for installation, choose to use network
mirroring in the mirroring step, but at this time the system network is
disconnected and the installation cannot continue.
When using the dvd installation disk, it is to complete the installation
quickly, but also want to install the system and configure the mirror
station for subsequent use.
1. Is there a way not to select the network mirror site in the installation
wizard, and reconfigure the network mirror site through dpkg-reconfig xxx
and other methods after the system installation is complete.
2. The installation wizard selects the network mirror site, but the actual
installation process uses the software package in the DVD disc.

Your camera and EXIF parsing library may have different notion on EXIF

These messages might be old, but they might mean that you broke D-Bus.

Try to figure out at which moment such messages appear. Try "busctl

Sound loses my analog speakers after suspend, and power settings don't affect monitor poweroff

2023-08-09 Thread Carl Fink

Hi,

I recently installed Debian Bookworm using the Mate environment.

I noticed that no matter what power settings I choose, the monitors
never power off. The screensaver can lock the screen, but it then just
stays on for many hours.

I have external analog speakers that I use, and also terrible, tinny
speakers built into my HDMI monitor that i never use because they suck.

I suspended my system from the System menu Monday night. When I woke it
up Tuesday morning, sound was coming from the HDMI monitor. The Sound
Settings didn't know about any other sound system. I tried
killing/restarting pulseaudio, but of course, Mate's seemingly-similar
audio system was installed instead. I then uninstalled that and
installed pulseaudio. This did not help. I had to reboot to get audio
back through the speakers. This sort of defeats the point of suspending.

I suspended before leaving for the office today. When I came back, the
sound system still didn't admit the existence of the analog speakers. I
had to reboot again. Now "Analog Stereo Duplex" is there again.

Yes, I did try unplugging and replugging the speaker wire.

Please let me know what other information would help debug this problem.
Also, should it become necessary, what packages would I report these
bugs in? Perhaps, mate-power-manager and pulseaudio?

This is an ASUS PN53 small form-factor unit, if that helps any.

Thank you.

as i may have said before. whatever you have going on
with file saving and file system access may be getting
stomped all over by whatever settings you have in the KDE
desktop or the particular application. so one thing i
would do for sure is make sure that the KDE desktop file
extension associations that may be turned on to do anything
automatically are turned off (until you resolve where the
issue actually resides).

once you have the KDE desktop stuff turned off then you
can at least know it isn't that which is mucking you up.

from there is it some other thing? well, if it now
works then you've solved it, and if it hasn't been solved
then you've at least eliminated one variable.

from there if it still does not work then you are up
against any automatic automounter crap (which i find a
PITA so i remove it or find ways to turn it off which
then gets through another layer of possible variables).

after that you should be down to the applcation and
what settings it has for dealing with file and accesses
and again i turn off all automatic stuff i can there to
make sure exactly what i'm trying to do can get done with
minimal interference.

since you have network stuff going on which i hardly
ever do and i also don't do bluethooth, samba, ssh, rpc
(or plenty of other things) well then you're going to
have to wade through those things and see what each may
let you do to narrow down where the issue is at.

when you have a complicated system it may be well
worth it to set up a blank slate new machine and put in
each layer and test it before adding the next to see
which step is going kerblooey. if i'm running a
production system this is a natural and common
procedure for any upgrade and debugging. gotta have a
way to do tests that doesn't shut down production.

You can always look for bugs filed against a package in the package's bug
page. In this case, this would be here [1].

Your bug looks a lot like this one [2]. It seems to be pretty old (2012),
so you might consider politely pinging the maintainer.

bash $MAIL bug in Bookworm

2023-08-09 Thread Alain D D Williams
I have recently upgraded to Bookworm.

I have set:

MAIL=/var/spool/mail/addw
MAILCHECK=60

I find that when doing filename expansion, by pressing TAB, that the 'You have
mail' message appears when it should not. In the example below I pressed TAB
after the letter 'T' (which gave me expansion 'TODO'). I am running bash.

$ me TYou have mail in /var/spool/mail/addw
ODO

Should I report this elsewhere ?

no, i was just pointing out that i find the combined logs
of systemd a lot easier to deal with as root instead of trying
to look at them as a user and having them broken apart. for a
simple system that i run it makes little sense to complicate
things by having separate logs in systemd journal.

i'm light years behind App[Anything]. once you mix up
what a system is doing then that adds yet more complexity
which like i mentioned above i tend to not do if i can
help it.

IMO once you've started installing things from a vendor's
repository you've then got to figure out how that integrates
or not with your package management system. the most of
that which i do here is in Python and i use virtual
environments to try to isolate the problem children to where
i hope they won't mess up the rest of my Python install. so
far that seems to be working as intended.

  i'm sorry i can't help much...

Just for the record: I could solve the problem, and it was sitting somewhere
else...

It's a Raspberry Pi running Raspbian with full sd card encryption, and
headless. Therefore there is dropbear used as small ssh server during boot
(built into initramfs), later ssh-server is used. After the update, dropbear
was also running and my connections where to dropbear, not sshd. Disabling
dropbear therefore solved the problem and my configuration of sshd was
perfectly fine.

Buenas.
