Is that enough? I usually use the term "sleep" to mean "suspend to ram" and "hibernate" to mean "suspend to disk". I don't know if these are the most common terms, but I do understand the difference between them. I also understand that it is advisable to have more swap space than RAM (which I do) in order to avoid problems with hibernation. The thing is that everything was working just fine until this past weekend, and all of a sudden something broke. The only thing I can think of is some package upgrade (I run apt-get dist-upgrade almost on a daily basis), since nothing else has changed. Maybe I should mention that the only power management package I have installed is pm-utils. I don't have uswsusp, hibernate or any of the acpi packages installed. Thank you for your reply, Adriano PS: Is there a way to know which packages migrated from sid to testing on a given day? If so, and given that some package upgrade was indeed what caused the problem, that would help me find the culprit. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Laptop won't resume from suspend to ram
Hello, I'm facing a very annoying problem with Debian testing on my laptop since this past weekend. Basically, the machine won't resume from a suspend to ram (resuming from suspend to disk works fine). It's not just a problem with a blank screen upon resuming; the machine actually gets completely frozen. I can hear the hard disk spinning though. I suspected it could be something to do with the wireless card (as the wireless LED doesn't come on when resuming), so I tried shutting down the network interface and unloading all kernel modules before putting the machine to sleep, but that didn't help. I tried kernels 2.6.30, 2.6.31 and 2.6.32 (the last two from Debian sid) with no luck. Furthermore, I suspect this problem is related to some package upgrade over the last few days, since everything was working just fine until last Friday or Saturday. I wonder if anybody in this list has faced this problem. Any help in trying to pin this problem down would be greatly appreciated. My machine is a Sony VaioVGN-NW130D laptop, with an Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100 network interface and a Mobility RadeonHD 4570 video card (I'm using the radeon driver, not fglrx). CD/DVD Burner Configuration
Hello guys, I tried to burn a CD with k3b, and got an error from wodim, the same as follow: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ wodim -scanbus /usr/bin/wodim: No such file or directory. Cannot open SCSI driver! For possible targets try 'wodim --devices' or 'wodim -scanbus'. For possible transport specifiers try 'wodim dev=help'. For IDE/ATAPI devices configuration, see the file README.ATAPI.setup from the wodim documentation. then I tried: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ wodim dev=/dev/cdrw -scanbus scsibus1: 1,0,0 100) 'MATSHITA' 'DVD-RAM UJ-840S ' '1.11' Removable CD-ROM yes, there it is. So my question is: how can I fix this, because to do something with the burner i'll need always to specify the 'dev' parameter... Problems upgrading testing after the release of Etch
Hi, Since yesterday, when trying to upgrade my Debian box with either apt-get upgrade or apt-get dist-upgrade, I get an error message saying WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated! I'm using Debian testing and I'm pretty sure this has to do with the release of Etch yesterday. As far as I understand, this happens because I don't have the public key used to sign the packages in testing. I reinstalled the package debian-archive-keyring and ran apt-get update, but the error persists. Is anybody else having this problem? Does anybody know how to fix it? I know I can proceed with the upgrade without authentication, but I wouldn't like to do that... XOrg doesn't switch VTs
Hello, I migrate my Debian unstable system from XFree 4.3 to XOrg 6.8.2 and everything works except the functionality of switch to VTs (CTRL ALT Fn). Investigating with `xev` show me that CTRL ALT Fn are generating the XF86_Switch_VT_n perfectly, and google'ing about I saw some cases of this problem, but the solutions doesn't work for me (the solutions include update xlibs, xlibs-data, change the keyboard driver, change Xkbrules). You can use procmail delivery folders as vm incoming folders, eg procmail delivers to ~/folders/DEBIAN, which vm uses as the incoming folder for ~/folders/debian. Then you can type g to get new mail, without problems. Try the code attached below in your .vm file (I don't know who wrote it, so I can't give the due credit). There are other solutions as well: create a .qmail-debian file that delivers to a Maildir (not Mailbox), make procmail forward the mail to and make vm use maildirs. Maildirs don't require file locking, so you are safe. Also, there's a patch to make procmail deliver to maildirs, see www.qmail.org. Same problem here. After trying to install it with dpkg, I runned the postinst script manually with the 'configure' parameter. Then I edited the /var/lib/dpkg/status file, in the perl package section changed the line install ok not-configured to install ok installed and deleted the line which read configured version: previous_package_version_here (or something like that) This kludge fooled dpkg into thinking that perl was ok (and I think it really is ok, haven't had any problems) and I could move on to the other packages. nis & weak passwords
Hello, apparently yppasswd in the nis package wasn't compiled with -DUSE_OBVIOUS to check for weak passwords. I found out that more than 20% of the user passwords in a Debian net I was managing were _very_ weak (eg login name). Not a very comfortable figure (even if one's using shadow passwords). I was inclined to install npasswd (or even a modified yppasswd) in /usr/local/bin. However, the server, yppasswdd, doesn't require that its clients talk to it from privileged ports (so yppasswd doesn't need to be suid root and I can't enforce my password policy). I think it would be nice if Debian addressed this (potential) security problem in an out-of-the-box configuration... IMHO, it already beats all commercial Unixes I know. Yes, apparently the clients don't bother to look up the shadow map (or maybe there's a protocol error), the error messages are something like "user foo doesn't have a password". What I did was install shadow in _all_ machines. In the server, I put the NIS source password & group files in /var/etc (remember to turn off rx permission for others in that dir and adjust /var/yp/Makefile). Then you have to configure /etc/ypserv.conf so that ypserv mangles the encrypted password field in the passwd* maps if the client comes from a port > 1024. Put + entries in the cilents' (and server) passwd & group files. You'll also need a custom adduser, btw. Some things that break under this setup: * 'finger' appears not to like getting an 'x' instead of the encrypted password ('finger -m foo' works, 'finger foo' only works if you're root). * yppasswdd wasn't compiled with shadow support, so you can't use yppasswd to change a user's password from your root shell (unless you recompile). -- Adriano -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Netgroups won't work
Hi, I have put together a handful of PCs and installed the latest rex on them. nis is working ok, but I can't make netgroups work. Here's an error message: Apr 2 20:40:32 turing mountd[178]: Unauthorized access by NFS client 192.168.45.42. If I add ritchie explicitly to the exports file, there's no problem. It makes TCP/IP work over your ethernet. Try this: # arp -a You'll see that you have a table mapping local IPs to MACs (the ethernet protocol doesn't understand IP addresses, only MAC ones). So, to send a datagram to your name server, you need its MAC address, which already was in your arp table. Now, the OS wasn't fully operational, some services (inetd) weren't available yet, but the kernel and the tcp layer were there, answering pings (which uses the ICMP protocol). -- Adriano -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Also, it is very fast (can handle more than 200K/day mail messages without problems) and isn't likely to have sendmail's security problems. In fact, I think qmail handles all debian lists. I don't remember the official site url, but you can get there from http://www.qmail.org Good luck, Adriano -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
