xdvik not in frozen?
Subject says it all. It's in the available list, but not in the directory. Alex. -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Trouble? e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
starting/stoping program on boot/shutdown
Hi! I'm taking part in the DES Challenge coordinated effort, which means running their client and calculating keys. Now this thing is easy to use and stays in the background, but every time I reboot I have to restart the program. Now my aproach was to write a little script put it into /etc/init.d/desclient . I used as a sample the script for the cron daemon, but the desclient doesn't behave like a daemon and so the script didn't work. So how do I start/stop a plain program during boot/shutdown? Is it safe, that root runs this thing? Should I run it under another account? Which one and do I have to create a homedir for that? This program should only be started once and not by "normal" users. How do I achieve this? Where would such a program be located (based on debian philosophy)? Since [EMAIL PROTECTED] is number 5 of the email top-20 of the DES Challenge coordinated effort there must be some answers out there :) Alex. Problem with talk(d)
Hi! There seems to be a problem with my talk(d). When I try to talk to somebody on a different machine (local works) I get no connection with talk and ytalk gives the following errors: Ytalk Error find_daemon: recv() failed Connection refused sendit: recv() failed Connection refused sendit: recv() failed Connection refused sendit: recv() failed Connection refused My netstd (2.12-1) and netbase (2.09-1) package are up to date. In the man-page to recv I could read: The recv call is normally used only on a connected socket (see connect(2)) and is identical to recvfrom with a nil from parameter. As it is redundant, it may not be supĀ ported in future releases. So is the support for recv discontinued now and talk still tries to use it? Problems working with bash.
I've read the man page on bash several times now, but I can't find out how to get the following to work: - In a tcsh I can do $var:r, which gives me 'name' if $var contaned 'name.ext'. How can I do this with bash? - In tcsh I can type anything on the command line and do a search on the history list matching this input by pressing ALT-P. How do I do that with bash? Alex.
Forcing X to reread config file safely?
Hi! I'm currently trying to set the best settings for my X-Display. After changing /etc/X11/XF86Config I used to do a /etc/init.d/xdm stop followed by /etc/init.d/xdm start Using this method gets me a locked machine sometimes (Can't type anything in the tty or switch ttys). So I suspect, that this ain't the right way. Is sending the XServer a SIGHUP the recommended way, or pressing CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE or something else? Alex.
XFree Specifications for Samsung SyncMaster 17GLsi Monitor?

Problems after update from debian 1.1.3 to 1.2.8
Hi! I installed debian linux a while ago from a cd, which contained the files from the release 1.1.3. This one worked great and I just had to add a kernel-parameter to be able to use my zip-drive. Last week I wanted to update my system to 1.2.8. I looked into /var/lib/dpkg/status to find out which packages I had installed (isn't there a easier method for this) and downloaded the updates. After installing all the packages "by hand" (dpkg -i -R ) it appeared, that no Xresource seemed to have any influence. All my settings in eg. the ~/.Xresource file were ignored. I checked xrdb, which failed with an error message, that it couldn't launch cpp. I have gcc installed and tried also the cpp package by itself. No success. Second thing is that i can't access the audio device (which worked under 1.1.3) anymore. xmix just says that it can't find the mixer device. Ok, this is no good bug-report, just a description of symtoms. But maybe somebody already knows where the problem is. Otherwise I will post more (detailed) information. Alex.
debian and ISDN?
Hi! Can somebody give me a hint how to connect my debian-linux box via ISDN?! I know of some isdn4linux package, but the readme expects me to do a kernel patch. Isn't there a isdn kernel-module anywhere to do the job? Alex. -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Trouble? e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
