I just did 2 reinstalls in the last two weeks (upgrade from sqeeze to wheezy screwed up my grub config and then my 6 year old drives started failing - so much fun :), but basically during both reinstalls and creating MD devices with debian installer (md0/md1/md2) using two drives sda/sdb, by default the installer just installed grub on MBR of the first device sda. I didn't see an option to install it everywhere. So, after reboot I did a manual # grub-install /dev/sda # grub-install /dev/sdb Now when I choose to boot from either first disk or second disk, it works fine. Did I miss something during the debian installation? Re: amd64 debian wheezy installation: software raid: partition misaligned by 512 bytes
Ok, so any way to fix that now? Without reinstalling everything? Any way to move the partitiions? Also, I don't remember creating these md partitions. The installer does that by default? I should do that part manually during installation? But I didn't see that option in the installer... thanks, Alexandru On Tue, May 21, 2013 at 6:38 AM, Virgo Pärna wrote: > On Sun, 19 May 2013 21:41:33 -0700, Alexandru Cardaniuc < > cardan...@gmail.com> wrote: > > > > 1. amd64 debian wheezy installation: software raid: partition misaligned by 512 bytes
make sure that md0 Starts at 64 and NOT 63? I didn't see these options during the installation? Also, since the partitions on the disk have 1M offset, should the MD devices also have 1M offset? Or that 63 offset starts AFTER the 1M offset? What should the proper Start be for the MD device in this case then? 64? Or a larger number? Another 2048 (1M)? Would appreciate any insight here :) -- Sincerely yours, Alexandru Cardaniuc

Flash stuff changes pretty often and hence the plugin becomes useless at some point during the life of the stable. Like the last time they changed something on youtube and swfdec couldn't play it anymore, until the new version came out (which by the way wasn't uploaded to stable). I think updates that break package functionality is something that qualifies for inclusion in debian-volatile. At least that is how I understand why, for instance, pidgin is in debian-volatile. I fail to see the difference between pidgin and swfdec-mozilla in this case. So, I think the best solution is to ask developers to upload swfdec-mozilla to debian-volatile and to support it there too. Asus P5B Deluxe or Asus P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP
Hi All! I am thinking about assembling a new debian amd64 computer. With recommendations on amd64 list I settled on a Core 2 Duo processor with one of Asus P5B flavour motherboards. The new box will be on the second floor and it needs to be connected to the network on the first floor. Cables won't work. So, I need to use wireless for that. Therefore I was thinking about ASUS P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP. Is wireless on this board going to work with debian amd64 ? I tried googling but didn't find any information on that matter. With google I found out, though, that the WiFi-AP on that board is based on some Realtek RTL chipset, and to make it work I will probably need ndiswrapper. Does anybody here have this board and uses the wireless on it with Debian amd64 ? Does it work ? Does it work solely with ndiswrapper ? Are there, then, 64bit drivers for it ? Or does it work with linux without ndiswrapper ? Since I won't be able to connect to the network with cables through ethernet, I want to be very sure that wireless on that board will work well on debian amd64 ? The other option is to go with ASUS P5B Deluxe that doesn't include the WiFi-AP and buy an additional PCI or USB WiFi card. After reading some recommendations on this list it seems that Ralink based WiFi is going to work fine. Googling I found out about Ralink RT2501 PCI and Ralink RT2501U USB that are said to be linux supported. Are there any recommendations with what to go: USB or PCI ? Since I am going to use it only on this new computer, I think I should settle for the PCI version. Are these Ralink WiFi cards well supported under linux? Is the support built into the stock debian linux kernel, or I will have to compile a custom kernel to make the WiFi work ? Are there any other WiFi cards I should consider that may work better under linux ? So, what is the recommended way to go: ASUS P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP or ASUS P5B Deluxe + WiFi card ? One more question: I intend to use the new box with debian etch. Are these motherboards going to work with linux kernel 2.6.18 ? getting a new Debian box
Hi All! I've been using Debian with my desktop replacement laptop HP Pavilion zv5260 for about 2 years now. This was the only computer I had for about 2.5 years. I got tired of using the laptop constantly. I want something more convenient with a bigger screen and that I can use more comfortably. So I decided to get a desktop. I need some advices. I use computer primarily for reading/writing emails, browsing internet, occasional openoffice.org use, watching movies on dvds or any mpeg movies. Most other times I spend sitting in emacs writing some code. I don't play computer games or use any 3D graphics applications. So I figured, I don't need a very fast and expensive graphics card, a lot of memory, the latest CPU or biggest HDD. This Desktop Computer is going to be used primarily for writing and compiling my code. So, my first question is: does it make sense to build my own Debian box, or for my purposes it's not necessary? From what I checked on the internet today some manufacturers offer prebuild computers for less price than I think I will be able to build it using the same parts. Any comments would be appreciated. Also, I don't want hardware compatibility with linux to be an issue. I still remember that it took me a while before I managed to make my laptop work (with ndiswrapper for wireless, patches for touchpad and stuff). So, I found out that Dell offers Dimension n-series without preinstalled Windows, specifically for customers of open source operating systems. Dell claims that these computers should work with linux with no hardware compatibility issues. I am specifically interested in Dell Dimension n-series e521 model. It seems to be a good choice for me. Good value and not expensive. That's what I am thinking to get: Dell Dimension E521N: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 4000+ Operating System: FreeDOS included in the box, ready to install Memory: 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz- 2DIMMs Keyboard and Mouse Bundles: Dell USB Keyboard and Dell Optical USB Mouse Monitor: 19 inch SP1908FP Silver Flat Panel Monitor w/TrueLife (Glossy Screen) Video Card: 256MB NVIDIA Geforce 7300LE TurboCache Hard Drive: 250GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache Floppy Drive and Media Reader: No Floppy Drive Included Network Interface: Integrated 10/100 Ethernet Modem: 56K PCI Data Fax Modem CD ROM/DVD ROM: 16x DVD+/-RW Drive Sound Cards:Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio Speakers: Dell AS501 10W Flat Panel Attached Spkrs for UltraSharp Flat Panels Limited Warranty, Services and Support Options: 1Yr In-Home Service, Parts + Labor - Next Business Day* TOTAL:$689.00 Are there any other desktop computers I should consider buying instead of this one? Is there any configuration part I should consider changing? Should I upgrade to 2 GB of RAM ? 1GB seems to be enough for me, since I am using now etch on my laptop with 512MB and I don't see any problems. In general e521n seems to be enough for etch and everything I use, since I am running a 2.5 year old laptop and I don't see any real performance issues. But again, I am open to advices. I googled e521n and debian and found out that there was a problem with usb malfunction that froze mouse but that it was solved with the new bios update released by Dell in January, 2007. I didn't find any other issues. Everything else seems to work in Debian. So if somebody here is using this model with Debian, please, provide feedback. Do you have any issues? Something to be aware before bying it? Any compatibility issues with Debian? I would prefer to install on it Debian Stable (Etch) that goes with linux kernel 2.6.18 Will I be able to do that? Or I will need new kernel 2.6.20 from unstable? Thanks for help in advance... -- "From a little distance one can perceive an order in what at the time seemed confusion." - F. The right way is to upgrade first from sarge to etch and then from etch to sid. sarge -> etch -> sid. This is the recommended way. That is strange. These upgrades should be pretty straightforward. Turn SMART on in your > BIOS and run the selftest via smartctl. I can't turn it on in bios... There is no such option! It's a laptop - hp pavilion zv5260. I found a menu HDD SELF-test with 2 options, I tried them both. 1) Execute SHORT test. Estimated test time: 2 minutes. Test status: PASSED. 2) Execute LONG test. Estimated test time: 75 minutes. Test status: PASSED. Both tests were successful and didn't result in any errors. My filesystem is ext3 (journalling). /dev/hda1 - 2Gb - swap /dev/hda2 - 7Gb - / /dev/hda3 - 70Gb - /home I decided to reinstall debian, installing ext3, because I thought may be the file system was corrupted. But I didn't touch /dev/hda3, because I had some files there that I didn't have time to backup. So I installed debian from netinst cd image, formatting /dev/hda1 and /dev/hda2 again. It installed without problems. Then I created a folder on /dev/hda2 and copied my files from /dev/hda3 to this folder. Then I ran: # umount /dev/hda3 # mke2fs -c -j -v /dev/hda3 It started creating the ext3 filesystem checking also for bad sectors (-c switch) there and it proceeded up to around 10%. After that it started giving the same opcode errors (uncorrectable) on each consecutive sector. After 40 minutes of these errors I turned it off. After I rebooted I tried: # mke2fs -j -v /dev/hda3 without checking for bad sectors and it succeeded creating a filesystem. But I don't think I should use it, though. So what should I do now? And what do these errors mean? Are these errors from the bad sectors? Then why mke2fs wasn't marking them ? Should I run mke2fs with -c check and leave for night to finish checking for bad sectors ? Or should I check it with another program 'badsectors'? I will leave one of them working for night, so that they will have time to finish and report the results in the morning... /dev/hda2 - root filesystem works fine. From 7Gb I used already 6.5Gb and I got no single error. The errors are only from /dev/hda3. Is this hard drive dying? Or the problem can be solved? ide: failed opcode was: unknown
Hi All! Yesterday I tried to make Emacs 21.4 use antialiased ttf fonts. So I installed xfstt (ttf font server) and many ttf fonts for different languages. After that the hardrive started working very very slow. So the whole system now is very slow, though there is enough memory, cpu usage is very low and I don't run any big applications. Just firefox, gaim and file manager. I tried to remove xfstt and all the fonts I installed yesterday, but that didn't help. I went to console to use some programs and that is what it gives me when I start programs: hda: irq timeout: status=0xd0 {Busy} ide: failed opcode was: unknown ide0: reset: success What does that mean and how can I solve this problem? $ df -h FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/hda2 7.4G 3.1G 4.0G 44% / /dev/hda3 65G 57G 4.5G 93% /home tmpfs 248M 0 248M 0% /dev/shm tmpfs 10M 92K 10M 1% /dev $ top top - 19:08:06 up 12:05, 4 users, load average: 0.27, 1.08, 1.71 Tasks: 93 total, 2 running, 91 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 4.3% us, 1.6% sy, 0.0% ni, 70.1% id, 23.3% wa, 0.2% hi, 0.4% si Mem:507000k total, 495444k used,11556k free, 8528k buffers Swap: 1951856k total, 92k used, 1951764k free, 148360k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND 6220 alexandr 15 0 145m 58m 17m S 3.9 11.9 28:02.61 amule 7529 alexandr 15 0 10540 1208 872 R 2.0 0.2 0:00.01 top 1 root 16 0 6032 700 572 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.13 init 2 root 34 19 000 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.05 ksoftirqd/0 3 root 10 -5 000 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.24 events/0 4 root 13 -5 000 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 khelper 5 root 10 -5 000 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 kthread 7 root 10 -5 000 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.05 kacpid 116 root 10 -5 000 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.15 kblockd/0 119 root 15 0 000 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 khubd 155 root 15 0 000 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.22 pdflush 157 root 11 -5 000 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 aio/0 156 root 15 0 000 S 0.0 0.0 0:02.57 kswapd0 742 root 15 0 000 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.04 kseriod 995 root 15 0 000 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.39 kjournald 1056 root 11 -4 6032 760 520 S 0.0 0.1 0:00.91 udevd 3863 root 20 0 000 S 0.0 0.0 0:00.00 shpchpd_event -- Sincerely yours, Alexandru Cardaniuc -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". set custom font in Emacs
Hi All! Before using Emacs on MS Windows XP I was able to choose my favourite non-proportional font for Emacs to use inserting this in my ~/.emacs ;(set-default-font ; "-outline-Bitstream Vera Sans Mono-normal-r-normal-normal-13-97-96-96-c-*-iso8859-1") After switching to Linux I am not able to do that anymore. When I insert this line in ~/.emacs - Emacs gives an error on startup and starts with the default font. Moreover, when I press + to get the fonts - I don't see Bitstream Vera Sans Mono there as an When I run set-frame-font function - I get only the following options: -bitstream-charter-bold-i-normal--10-100-75-75-p-62-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-i-normal--11-80-100-100-p-68-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-i-normal--12-120-75-75-p-74-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-i-normal--14-100-100-100-p-86-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-i-normal--15-140-75-75-p-93-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-i-normal--17-120-100-100-p-105-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-i-normal--19-140-100-100-p-117-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-i-normal--19-180-75-75-p-117-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-i-normal--25-180-100-100-p-154-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-i-normal--25-240-75-75-p-154-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-i-normal--33-240-100-100-p-203-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-i-normal--8-80-75-75-p-50-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-r-normal--10-100-75-75-p-63-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-r-normal--11-80-100-100-p-69-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-r-normal--12-120-75-75-p-75-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-r-normal--14-100-100-100-p-88-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-r-normal--15-140-75-75-p-94-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-r-normal--17-120-100-100-p-107-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-r-normal--19-140-100-100-p-119-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-r-normal--19-180-75-75-p-119-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-r-normal--25-180-100-100-p-157-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-r-normal--25-240-75-75-p-157-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-r-normal--33-240-100-100-p-206-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-bold-r-normal--8-80-75-75-p-50-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-i-normal--10-100-75-75-p-55-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-i-normal--11-80-100-100-p-60-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-i-normal--12-120-75-75-p-65-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-i-normal--14-100-100-100-p-76-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-i-normal--15-140-75-75-p-82-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-i-normal--17-120-100-100-p-92-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-i-normal--19-140-100-100-p-103-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-i-normal--19-180-75-75-p-103-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-i-normal--25-180-100-100-p-136-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-i-normal--25-240-75-75-p-136-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-i-normal--33-240-100-100-p-179-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-i-normal--8-80-75-75-p-44-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-r-normal--10-100-75-75-p-56-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-r-normal--11-80-100-100-p-61-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-r-normal--12-120-75-75-p-67-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-r-normal--14-100-100-100-p-78-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-r-normal--15-140-75-75-p-84-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-r-normal--17-120-100-100-p-95-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-r-normal--19-140-100-100-p-106-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-r-normal--19-180-75-75-p-106-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-r-normal--25-180-100-100-p-139-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-r-normal--25-240-75-75-p-139-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-r-normal--33-240-100-100-p-183-iso8859-1 -bitstream-charter-medium-r-normal--8-80-75-75-p-45-iso8859-1 -bitstream-terminal-bold-r-normal--18-140-100-100-c-110-dec-dectech -bitstream-terminal-bold-r-normal--18-140-100-100-c-110-iso8859-1 -bitstream-terminal-medium-r-normal--18-140-100-100-c-110-dec-dectech -bitstream-terminal-medium-r-normal--18-140-100-100-c-110-iso8859-1 There is no Bitstream Vera Sans Mono among these Bitstream fonts.
