Starting Tomcat 10 at bootup

2022-11-26 Thread Amn Ojee Uw

Hey folks!

The issue :
~~~
I just installed 'apache-tomcat-10.0.27.tar.gz' in my Debian 11 (stable)
box, running OpenjDK 17.0.4, this was done following the recommendation
on 'How to Install Apache Tomcat on Debian 11 (Step by Step)
 '.
With the exception of the java installation, I followed the steps up to
section 8 where I get this error :
*/sudo systemctl restart tomcat/**/
/**/Job for tomcat.service failed because the control process exited
with error code./**/
/**/See "systemctl status tomcat.service" and "journalctl -xe" for
details./*
I followed the recommendation of the error message and I get this :
systemctl status tomcat.service
● tomcat.service - Tomcat webs servlet container
 Loaded: loaded (/etc/systemd/system/tomcat.service; *enabled*;
vendor preset>
 Active: activating (auto-restart) (Result: exit-code) since Fri
2022-11-25>
    Process: 86949 ExecStart=/opt/tomcat/bin/startup.sh (code=exited,
status=0/>
    Process: 86960 ExecStop=/opt/tomcat/bin/shutdown.sh (code=exited,
status=1/>
    CPU: 38ms
My Imperfect Solution
~~~

If from the command prompt or a shell script, I run this code sudo
'/opt/tomcat/bin/catalina.sh run', Tomcat runs nicely, but it grabs the
Terminal, if I close the Terminal, Tomcat just stops working. Obviously
not a perfect solution.

I am a newcomer to the Linux world, but in Windows I had the same issue,
so I wonder if this is a potential bug.

Please help me resolve this issue or let me know how to report this bug.
(This would be my first contribution to the team, so I am rightfully
exited).

Thanks in advance.

I can think of two possible approaches, both of which come with
downsides.

Approach 1:

1a. Identify all of the packages for which you've installed a version
from sid.

1b. Identify the available version of each package which comes from stable.

1c. Drop sid from your sources.list (and 'apt update' or similar).

1d. Individually downgrade each package you identified to the version
you identified, using e.g. 'apt-get install packagename=version'.

This is not guaranteed to work, since not all packages support
downgrading. Attempt it at your own risk.

Approach 2:

2a. Back up your data.

2b. Reinstall Debian using the stable installer.

2c. Restore your backed-up data.

This is drastic, but will work.

To the best of my awareness, there is no good or practical way to go
from sid to stable without reinstalling.

In principle it's possible to go from testing to stable, by switching
your sources.list to point at testing by its codename instead of the
name 'testing' and then waiting for that codename to be released as the
new stable.

But since packages in sid don't necessarily ever go to testing, a
similar approach for going even from sid to testing (much less sid to
stable) can't be expected to be viable.

I've been reading up on systemd, both from Red Hat's documentation,
Debian's and the man files. One thing I haven't been able to
explain is why systemd has config files in /etc, /lib, /run, and
/usr/lib.

/lib and /usr/lib are the same thing, or will be the same thing in a
future release. Don't worry about that.

/run is transient. It's an in-memory file system, created and
populated at boot time, or by running programs. It's not a place for
configuration.

So really you're looking at /etc vs. /usr/lib.

/usr/lib contains the defaults created by the Debian maintainers or
the upstream authors. When you install a new package that has a
systemd unit file, that's where it'll go.

/etc contains the overrides and configuration elements that are unique
to your system. If a service is masked or disabled, it'll be done
here. If you install a locally built service, and write a systemd
unit for it, this is where you'll put it. If you override part or
all of a package's unit file, you do it here.

Thanks for this excellent explanation. I wish the folks who write docs
would try to explain things in English instead of geek-ese. I'm a
programmer, and I try to keep this in mind whenever I write docs. That
said, though, the Red Hat docs for systemd are pretty good.

BlueTooth - Acer - Qualcomm Atheros

2022-08-26 Thread Amn

Hey there!!

As the subject suggests, this combo [BlueTooth - Acer - Qualcomm
Atheros] is my problem.
But before going any further I'd like to leave clear that I am not, by
any means, a Linux Power User [LPU], I just installed Debian 11 in my
laptop and are now discovering the pros and cons of this OS, that's it!

After installing Debian 11 from an USB, I found out that the blue-tooth
wasn't working, so searching the net I found this web pages that attempt
to fix the issue, among them are :

/https://wiki.debian.org/BluetoothUser/a2dp//
//https://wiki.debian.org/SourcesList//
//https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions/comments/meaxi5/bluetooth_not_working_in_debian_11///

//https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/559134/bluetooth-adapter-not-found-in-debian-buster/559147#559147/

and many more that are not worth mentioning.

I've learned that PulseAdio was not doing the trick in my laptop, so I
tried PipeWire, but to no avail. Later I went deeper and installed the
Qualcomm driver, since my Acer Aspire E5-771G has a 'Qualcomm Atheros
AR956x Wireless Network Adapter' as suggested by -
https://www.systranbox.com/how-to-install-atheros-wireless-driver-linux/
-. The result was catastrophic! Not only the blue-tooth did not work,
but the WiFi was extremely slow.

Now I am open to anyone's suggestions to get the blue-tooth to work, it
worked under MS, therefore, I know the hardware if functional

Remove package source from apt(-get)

2022-05-22 Thread Amn

When I 'ap-get update' I get this message:

"*E: *The repository
'http://ppa.launchpad.net/pipewire-debian/pipewire-upstream/ubuntu
kinetic Release' does not have a Release file"

I checked " /etc/apt/sources.list ", but the above link is not there.

The same happens with : "W: An error occurred during the signature
verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files
will be used. GPG error: https://packages.microsoft.com/repos/edge
stable InRelease: The following signatures couldn't be verified because
the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY EB3E94ADBE1229CF" after
installing MS-Edge.

How can I remove these errors?
Thanks in advance.

2022-05-21 Thread Amn
This conversation touches the core of an issue I am having when trying
to get my wireless speaker to work.
So my question is, do I need to remove bluetooth.* files in rder t
install PulseAudio?

Thanks in advance.

ah, just so, I am glad it is.

What its its feature complete replacement in a buster install? This

I would advise an inexperienced, lazy or incompetent user to extcute
'apt search pdf' and search for "viewer" and "reader". Testing the

I often see excessive and useless comment, like this one "inexperience,

Don't feel like ego war here but those type of attitude doesn't make
someone ask for help again.

"feature complete"? Judge for yourself.
