Java Plugin for Iceweasel for AMD 64 bit Debian?

2008-02-10 Thread Amogh Hooshdar
I have Debian installed on AMD 64 bit laptop. How can I install the
java plugin for iceweasel?

I have heard that Sun has not released a Java plugin for AMD 64-bit.
Is this true?

Is there any non-Sun plugin then?

Re: Unable to play mp3 files after yesterday's dist-upgrade on Lenny

2008-01-23 Thread Amogh Hooshdar
This is the output of list plugins.

$ xine --list-plugins=demux
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.6cvs.
(c) 2000-2007 The xine Team.

 Available xine's plugins:
   -Demuxer:
anx, image, iff, yuv4mpeg2, mpeg_pes, mpeg_block, wve, idcin, ipmovie,
vqa, wc3movie, roq, str, film, smjpeg, fourxm, vmd, matroska, flashvideo,
nsv, ogg, avi, fli, pva, quicktime, aud, aiff, flac, nsf, realaudio, snd,
tta, voc, vox, mod, mng, real, asf, mpeg-ts, slave, mpeg, rawdv, sputext,
 elem, yuv_frames, wavpack.

Also, an upgrade was involved regarding libxine. Here are the lines:-

[UPGRADE] libxine1 1.1.8-3 - 1.1.8-3+lenny1
[UPGRADE] libxine1-console 1.1.8-3 - 1.1.8-3+lenny1
[UPGRADE] libxine1-doc 1.1.8-3 - 1.1.8-3+lenny1
[UPGRADE] libxine1-ffmpeg 1.1.8-3 - 1.1.8-3+lenny1
[UPGRADE] libxine1-gnome 1.1.8-3 - 1.1.8-3+lenny1
[UPGRADE] libxine1-misc-plugins 1.1.8-3 - 1.1.8-3+lenny1
[UPGRADE] libxine1-plugins 1.1.8-3 - 1.1.8-3+lenny1
[UPGRADE] libxine1-x 1.1.8-3 - 1.1.8-3+lenny1

Nothing about libmad0 in the log file.

So, what should I do now to fix this issue? Why do I have to
downgrade? Wouldn't this problem be fixed in Lenny at all? Please
suggest the best possible path from here.

As far as I know, the standard way of playing MP3s involves the xine
engine (libxine1), which in itself relies on libmad0 to decode the MP3
 stream.

Check if the upgrade involved the libxine* or the libmad0 packages. You
can find this information in /var/log/aptitude (if you use aptitude) or
in /var/log/dpkg.log. (The aptitude log is easier to read.) If any
packages were upgraded, try to downgrade them again to the previous
version (which might still be in your /var/cache/apt/archives/
 directory).

  I am using Debian Lenny.

 Check the output of:

 xine --list-plugins=demux

This should tell you if xine really does not know how to play any MP3s
anymore or if it just does not recognize your particular file(s) as MP3.

Yes it is. Sun has still not distributed a Java browser plugin for

Are you sure, on my system I have

Should I let aptitude remove xserver-org-input-* and xserver-org-video-* packages?

2007-12-16 Thread Amogh Hooshdar
I am on Lenny and I am doing aptitude update, aptitude dist-upgrade
(dist-upgrade to lenny itself to make it more uptodate and get the
newer kernel also).

I did not go ahead with it because it wants to remove a lot of
xserver-org-input-* and xserver-org-video-* packages. I have included
the complete aptitude dist-upgrade below. Please tell me why it wants
to remove all those xserver-org-* stuff. Are they really not required?
Is there anything else replacing them? Removing them would do no harm
to my GUI?

apt-cache show and aptitude show report different dependencies - Why?

2007-12-15 Thread Amogh Hooshdar
I always use the aptitude package manager. I never use the apt-get
package manager.

Today, I noticed that apt-cache show and aptitude show are reporting
different dependencies for the package:- linux-image-2.6-486. If you
see the aptitude output, it clearly shows:-

Depends: linux-image-2.6.22-3-486
Provides: linux-latest-modules-2.6.22-3-486

apt-cache output has two blocks. The first block correctly shows:-

Provides: linux-latest-modules-2.6.22-3-486
Depends: linux-image-2.6.22-3-486

but the second one shows:-

Provides: linux-latest-modules-2.6.22-2-486
Depends: linux-image-2.6.22-2-486

Why this difference? Why two blocks of output for the same package in
apt-cache show. I have included the full outputs of both the tools
below.

# aptitude show linux-image-2.6-486

How to disable ipv6 in Lenny to avoid 1.0.0.0 error in name resolution for AAAA type queries

2007-12-14 Thread Amogh Hooshdar
I am using Debian Lenny.

$ uname -a
Linux mylappy 2.6.18-4-486 #1 Wed May 9 22:23:40 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

I changed the alias net-pf-10 ipv6 line to the following two lines.

alias net-pf-10 off
alias ipv6 off

After rebooting, I checked: lsmod | grep ipv6. Sure enough it is gone
and the command gives nil output. But when I use bitchx or pidgin to
connect to irc.freenode.net, I can still see DNS irc.freenode.net
type of queries. As a result our DNS server that doesn't understand
ipv6 returns 1.0.0.0 as the address and the clients don't work.

First I tried making these changes /etc/modprobe.d/aliases - Result:
problem persists (Yes, I did reboot after the changes)

Next, I tried adding the two alias off lines in
/etc/modeprobe.d/00local - Result: problem persists.

Finally, I added the line blacklist ipv6 towards the top (5th line)
of /etc/modeprobe.d/blacklist - Result: still the problem persists.

I have succeeded to make Iceweasel work by setting
network.dns.disableIPv6=true in about:config. But I need a OS-wide
solution so that all my network apps do not send ipv6 DNS type
requests and they work successfully.

Please help me to disable ipv6 completely.
