Gdm hangs and don't log in

1999-02-28 Thread Andrea Novara
Hi!

Just a little question: I've just installed GNOME rpms, including gdm.
Have configured /usr/etc/gdm/gdm.conf, created all the dirs required and
mentioned in docs. Now: gdm uses PAMs, right? Since I'm able to start gdm and
I don't get incorrect password or similar messages, but after logging in
gdm don't seems to be able to fire up a session. The server hangs idle and
nothing happens!

That's my /etc/pam.d/gdm file:

#%PAM-1.0
auth optional /usr/lib/security/pam_pwdb.so shadow nullok
auth optional /usr/lib/security/pam_nologin.so
accountoptional /usr/lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
password optional /usr/lib/security/pam_cracklib.so
password optional /usr/lib/security/pam_pwdb.so shadow nullok use_authtok
sessionoptional /usr/lib/security/pam_pwdb.so

I've just tried to cheat pam setting as optional all the steps but that
don't seems to be a smart move! 8(

What can I do?

Many Thanx

Andrea

Re: Networking Win98 and Linux

1999-02-24 Thread Andrea Novara
All you need is a SAMBA server.
Samba is a suite of program which implements the SMB/CIFS protocol
for Unix.
The package includes the servers ( Samba is also capable -- even if in
alpha state -- to manage WinNT Domains ) and several clients which
help manage the network and verify the functionality of your server.
There is also a Web based configuration tool called SWAT.

The main site is www.samba.org, but debian have precompiled and
prepackaged debs. Compile yourself only if you need custom unusual
beavioursS...

Re: cdu31a

1999-02-23 Thread Andrea Novara
Thanks for the hints!

The problem is that my controller is a SC400 ( card shown in commented text in
cdu31a.c )
but the ports suggested are not working

I get a resource busy message from kernel even if I specify explicitly
cdy31a_port=0x634
which should be my port! ( as reported in card manuals )

Why?

On other computer I got similar problem on modular ppa, but resolved problem
with correct
module dependencies! But in this case a `depmod -a` not resolved the problem.

Thanx, Andrea!

cdu31a

1999-02-22 Thread Andrea Novara
Hi to all!

I have an old sony cdu33a 2x cd! The problem is that no docs are provided
about which io_port I should use. The DOS driver don't tell me the values!
The manifacturer of the audio card / controller have retired ( was Reveal )
and all the hints in cdu31a.c don't work!

I'm using kernel 2.2.1 on hamm.

What can I do?

Thanks!!!
Andrea

AWE 64 Value

1999-01-03 Thread Andrea Novara
Hello!

I'm experiencing problems configuring my new awe 64 value ISA PnP card!

The card get correctly initialized by isapnp ( 0x220, 0x330, 0x388, irq5,
dma 1 and 5 - same values as Windog ) The Kernel see the card as a SB16
standard and I'm able to reproduce wav, au, to mix channels and record!

The problem is the MIDI system. I've installed the awe32 patch on a 2.0.35
kernel. make xconfig, dep, clean, zImage, modules and modules_install
configured lilo ad reinstalled it!
I have a recursive line:

Jan 3 04:28:50 gromit kernel: AWE32: not detected

in /var/log/messages.
Also sfxtest show me a analogue message!

Why?

Many thanks!!!

inetd and nfsd!

1998-12-10 Thread Andrea Novara
Hi to all!

just a little question: I'm trying to set up nfsd via inetd
but the BIG ONE NETWORK DAEMON don't want to start the nfs!
I'm using a line such this:

nfs/1-3 dgram rpc/udp wait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/rpc.nfsd

Any one knows wat's the problem?

(I've done kill -HUP `cat /var/run/inetd.pid` after writing
each session of /etc/inetd.conf, I've just also seen at /etc/services
but the service is shown! Or should be shown in /etc/rpc?)

Many Thanks!!!

Subjects not so comfortable

1998-12-04 Thread Andrea Novara
Hi!

I have a small config feeling question?
Since we spawn hundreds of messages each day, it
would be more comfortable to have a constant string
in subjects such as [ DEBIAN ] that allows easy
filtering.

If anyone have better suggestions or cat filter
using other header than from, can mail such
tips? I'm using elm's filter program now!

Many thanks

Strange tty problems

1998-11-23 Thread Andrea Novara
Hi!

I've just installed hamm. And recently descovered a little
problem with ttys and remote unix.

Default terminal setting is xterm-debian which is non present
on our Sun Ultra server at university. When I telnet on it, I
set TERM to xterm and try to stty erase .

But nothing changes. I continue having problems with
backspaces and probably (not yet tested) others control
keys and combinations!

Before hamm, I ran Slackware 3.4 with no problem on char mapping
over telnet.

Do you have ideas?

Many thanks..
