hi

thanks Jaye ... I've tried quite a few different kernel configurations,
including the one in your e-mail. I haven't been able to get this drive
working at all under linux or Windows I think it's time to write Acer
off as a bad mistake ...

Problems with Acer CD-RW 8432IA

2001-01-08 Thread Andrew McRobert
hi all

I've been trying to get my new Acer CD-RW drive working with no luck so far
(after 4-5 weeks - on and off).
I first tried under Win98 SE and Win2000 (including updating firmware,
motherboard drivers & ASPI layer
etc.) - but Windows would sometimes not detect the drive at all, or hang when
running Explorer or hang
when starting a burn.

I'm now trying to get it working under Linux (which if it doesn't work I'm
taking it back to the shop). I've
followed all the steps from the CD-Writing-HOWTO, but I'm getting similar
problems to those under Windows
(ie. using cdrecord through Xcdroast or gcombust hangs the system for 10-15
secs and then aborts
with an "Illegal address", "check condition" or another error.

Here's the output from 'dmesg' - which to me looks a-ok:

I've configured most of the drivers as modules, as compiling them into the

If anyone can see where I'm going wrong I'd appreciate it ... otherwise I'm
going to put it down as
either a motherboard or CD-RW hardware error ... and the CD-RW is easier to
replace!

thanks

Adding UFS support

2000-12-22 Thread Andrew McRobert
hi all

I just put a SCSI disk from an old sparc-station into my server, but when I
try to mount it with:

mount -t ufs -o ufstype=sun /[mount] /[mount_point]

I get a message that the kernel doesn't support the UFS filesystem ...
excuse my ignorance, but does anyone know if its possible for me to run a
UFS module with 'insmod' or something along those lines?

I realise that i can do this, and have actually changed the lilo.conf
setting (and run lilo) to boot from /dev/sdb1, but I get "Warning: /dev/sdb
is not the first hard disk". If I then try to boot with that configuration,
I get the "LI" situation ...

this is simple, just get a lilo boot: prompt and type:

linux root=/dev/sdc1

which will override the root= line in lilo.conf

the linux kernel assigns the device nodes dynamically, whatever disk
it notices first will get /dev/sda, its much simpler to just fix
/etc/fstab and lilo.conf then try and convince the kernel otherwise.

as for the LI stuff maybe you should try grub, i think its much less
fragile then lilo, its also much more powerful and smarter. (you
don't have to reinstall it everytime you touch the kernel files)

Installing new SCSI driver in Dell Poweredge - a challenge?

2000-11-26 Thread Andrew McRobert
hi all

Thanks for the helpful comments re: my LILO problem. I've temporarily
abandoned adding a SCSI drive from an old sparc station, and have got the
server booting properly again through LILO. Here's what I'm trying to do
though, if anyone has any ideas they'd be much appreciated.

The HDD is a 50pin SCSI drive from an old Sun sparc station (which was
running Debian also - and has linux & Sun partitions) - the old HDD does not
boot. What I'd like to do is install this drive into the newer Dell server
we have here at the Uni. The Dell server has an on-board SCSI Ultra-2
controller for two Seagate drives, and a separate PCI SCSI card for the DDS4
tape drive. This separate card has both an Ultra-2 channel and a separate
Fast/Ultra channel for older SCSI devices.

My basic plan of attack has been to install the old Sun HDD internally and
hook it up through the Ultra channel on the SCSI card. Everything's
terminated correctly, and at boot time the controller correctly identifies
the SCSI id and type of the old Sun HDD. The Sun disk is set at id 3, the
two Seagate drives are set at id's 0 and 1.

The problem is that the PCI SCSI controller initialises prior to the onboard
Ultra-2 controller (which controls the drive that I want the system to boot
off). This means that the old Sun HDD becomes /dev/sda, while the two
Seagate drives become /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc respectively. LILO is set up on
the Seagate HDD at id 0, and the config file tells LILO to look for the
kernel and root partition on "/dev/sda1".

If I boot the server with the old Sun HDD attached, I get a message along
the lines of "can't find boot device", if I take it out again, the Seagate
drive can't boot (it gets to "LI" and hangs). What I'd like to do is make
sure that the old Sun HDD is /dev/sdc - NOT /dev/sda - in which case the
machine should boot a-ok. However, for the life of me I can't get Linux to
recognise it as anything but /dev/sda. I've tried setting it's id to 0, and
the normal Seagate boot drive to 1 (and changed the SCSI controller to boot
from "1") - but this doesn't work either - the Sun disk is still /dev/sda.
I've also told the BIOS to give the on-board controller a higher boot
priority than the PCI SCSI controller - but this doesn't change Linux-world.

I realise know that it's probably the fact that the PCI SCSI controller
initialises before the on-board, meaning that the old Sun HDD is detected
before the two Seagate drives attached to the on-board controller.

I'm not sure if, and how, I can get the on-board controller to kick-in
first, meaning that my main system drive (SCSI id 0), is /dev/sda???

*Any* help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
Andrew

mkboot

2000-11-25 Thread Andrew McRobert
hi all

Can anyone tell me a reliable way to make a boot disk? I've tried the
mkboot util, and I have to say it's pretty average - it hasn't
successfully booted a disk, only get's to:

"LILO boot:
Loading linux"

and dies ... I'm pretty sure there's a way to make a boot disk with dd,
but can't remember how. The machine I'm trying to boot uses a 2.2.14
kernel and mounts the second SCSI drive as the root partition ...

HELP! - LILO (SCSI)

2000-11-24 Thread Andrew McRobert
hi all

I tried adding a ULTRA SCSI hard disk to the server (on the separate ULTRA
SCSI channel on the controller), and while the system correctly identifies
all of the attached SCSI devices (including the two other HDDs), it gives
me this message when I connect the ULTRA SCSI drive:

can't locate boot device

If I disconnect it, ie. take my system back to exactly the way it was
before, LILO stops at "LI"???!?!?!?

Does anybody have any idea why this is happening??

thanks a lot

I tried a little while back to forward VNC connections through an SSH tunnel
(by telling SSH to listen for connections on local port *X1* and forward
them to foreign port *Y3* -- and then VNC-ing to *X1*). However, I got an
error from Teraterm Pro (with TSSH ext.), along the lines of "application

have any experience with this?

f-secure does ssh2 also, but if I had the choice, I=B4d go for teraterm,
much easier to configure, use and *free*.

Hello;

What controls when '/etc/cron.daily/*' gets run? I thought it was
'/etc/crontab' but for some reason it doesn't run at the times I
specified.

files:

yourputer@> hostname [type hostname]
yourputer@> ifconfig eth0 [your ip] netmask [type netmask] broadcast [type

... I'm not familiar with a command to change your nameservers (I'm sure
there wld be one though), so you'll probably need to manually edit
/etc/resolv.conf to change those (if necessary).

To change these parameters of your machine, edit the following
files:

/etc/hostname
/etc/hosts
/etc/init.d/network (if you use slink aka Debian 2.1)
/etc/network/interfaces (if you use potato aka Debian 2.2)

I guess that these should be the first places where you should
take a look at.

You might also like to change other places like:

/etc/resolv.conf
/etc/host.conf

Hi,

I can't see if you stripped empty lines of the above output.
But give a try to the following from crontab(5) manpage:

Note that if the line does
not have a trailing newline character, the entire line
will be silently ignored by both crontab and cron; the
   command will never be executed.

This is another common one to run into. The package you need to install is
the bin86 package. as86 is the assembler used on the x86 platform. It's
not a required package, as not everyone uses the kernel on an x86 machine.

Actually, it gets compressed with either of those two methods. I'm guessing
that he copied the wrong file from ... wherever it is that the files come
from. I always use bzlilo ... can't remember where the various files get
dropped.

Thing is, there's a pre-compression file that gets left somewhere, and then
there's the post-compression file. My guess is that it was the
pre-compression file that he copied.

Ah, there it is. According to the Kernel-HOWTO ...

  7.11. `Not a compressed kernel Image file''

Don't use the vmlinux file created in /usr/src/linux as your boot
image; [..]/arch/i386/boot/bzImage is the right one.

I'd guess it was the vmlinux file that he grabbed.

hello

Problem is that no matter what TERM setting I use, and I've tried everyone
listed in terminfo, I cannot get vi to operate correctly. The closest TERM
value is 'sun' which will use the full screen idea ok but neither the
cursor keys nor h/j/k/l will move about the page. Other TERMs produce
rather worse responses.

I've also tried stty sane and looked at individual stty options, to no
avail.

I am connecting to 'potato' via telnet from a solaris box which I interact
with via an OpenWindows xterm. I have also tried a vanilla telnet app. and
get the same results.

I am new to debian, having arrived here from Solaris via (a brief stop at)
redhat. Not being able to edit files is a bit of a handicap at this early
stage.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Rolf.

Shadowing.. Sounds like a cable problem actually. I get the efect on my
system because I'm running it through a KVM switch. One of the systems I
use where I work is also run through a switchbox and displays the same
kind of problem. Perhaps you could try using a shorter cable (if the cable
can detatch from the monitor) or add one or two of those ferrite beads
around the cable. Might or might not work.

Port No. 1032 - iad3

2000-08-13 Thread Andrew McRobert
hi all

Does anyone know what port 1032 is used for on a Windows machine (or any
machine for that matter)? Running a port scan on my computer shows this port
open and labelled as supporting "iad3"??

thanks

Sounds like you may be using the wrong xserver.

Are you sure you are using the correct xserver for you video card?

yeah, and it lets me widen the image on the screen, but not stretch it

hi again

Sure, all I did though was run "alien -t [rpm name]" on the RPMs though, I
think there was one *warning* but certainly nothing fatal, and I've been
able to extract the files from the converted .tgz file.

How should I send you the .tgz's

Re: HP OpenMail

2000-08-11 Thread Andrew McRobert
hi

I downloaded the files the other day, and have just begun the process of
trying to install this on our Debian server. I've only had time to get to
the stage of converting the rpm's to .tgz files and extracting the files
to a temporary directory. It looks like it could take a fair bit of
hacking around to get it all to work properly on Debian. I've heard that
running the RedHat installation scripts on a Debian box will pretty much
f$^k up the machine.

/etc/rc.d is a RedHat-ism which is going away, IIUC, in the current/next
release of RedHat.

The location of the init directories rc.d and init.d do *not*
matter to the software package. They *do* matter to the system which
finds and executes startup and shutdown scripts.

Install the scripts and links in /etc/init.d and /etc/rc.d under
Debian.

Location of "/etc/rc.d" directory Debian v RHAT

2000-08-11 Thread Andrew McRobert
hi all

I'm trying to install a Rhat RPM (HP's "OpenMail") on a Debian system here.
A bunch of files in "openmail-core-6.0.5-8.tar" need to go in the
"/etc/rc.d" directory under Rhat ---> Under the Debian file hierarchy,
there's the following directories in /etc: rc0.d, rc1.d, rc2.d, rc3.d, rc4.d
& rc5.d (ie. no "rc.d").

Is there any danger in creating the "/etc/rc.d" directory and storing the
relevant files from the RPM there?

HP OpenMail on Debian (M$ Exchange alternative)

2000-08-08 Thread Andrew McRobert
hi

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience in getting HP's OpenMail
working on a Debian box? One of the features of OpenMail is that it can
serve as an alternative to M$oft's Exchange Server software, and allows
calendar sharing etc. between employees in an enterprise.

The evaluation version on HP's site links to a bunch of RPMs (for RedHat
6.0) ... and I seem to recall some discussion on this list that has
suggested that trying to install RPMs under Debian will create a bit of a
mess ...??

if anyone has got this working, especially if they have installation
instructions for Debian or a port ... I'd be most grateful!

cheers
Andrew

I forgot to mention that I recently installed Debian on an old Sparc station
here after Solaris crashed and burned the root partition on the SCSI drive
why will always be a mystery - (and one which I haven't got time to
solve). After a few initial installation problems, I got the floppy images
to work and the machine has been running smoothly for a couple of weeks now.
At the moment it's just running as a Web server ... debian's web space is
actually just a bunch of symbolic links to the Web pages on the Sun
partitions that weren't f#*&#(d after the crash.

Here at Monash University in Australia, we use both Solaris and Linux.
Solaris
is used for most mission critical services, but most of the time we use it
because we need the grunty Sun hardware that it comes with it.

Linux is being used more and more within the IT department. We've found it
especially good for 'farms' of machines (eg web proxies, mail, etc). It's
also being used as a 'black box' at remote locations - offers web proxy,
DNS,
SMTP, etc for people with flaky connections.

The two Linux-related projects I'm working with involves two services - web
proxy and mail exchanger. The original implementor of the web proxy farm
(setup
some time ago) chose Redhat for the machines. A couple of years on, and they
work - but need quite a lot of hand-holding.

The mail exchanger stuff I'm currently working on now involves Debian and
Postfix on a bunch of extremely tasty boxes (Intel Hudson servers - RAID
cages,
hot-swappable power supplies, that sort of thing). Although not in
production
yet, they've stood up to everything I can throw at them.

As far as Linux is concerned, its been very pro-Redhat around here for a
while
(probably because its the most common) but people are starting to realise
that
Debian just works and pretty much takes care of itself.

Debian is my personal favourite mostly because of the ease of maintenance. I
have three Debian workstations on my desk, each with uptimes of over a
month,
and the only time I've had to reboot is to install a new kernel - never for
any other upgrade. It also runs my personal web and mail server.

I've also set up Debian for my family (who know nothing outside Windows, and
not even that very well) to use as a masquerading gateway. They live over
500km
away from me so I only get to visit twice a year. Last time I was there it
had been up for over a year, and apparently that was only because someone
pulled the wrong plug out of the wall.

Debian just works. And if I ever get around to trying Debian Sparc, maybe I
can
get rid of Solaris on those Sun boxes ;)

Regards,
Rob.

I don't know of one @ the Debian WWW site, but there's one in the O'Reilly

If it is a regular CRT-style monitor, there are wire coils
wrapped around the CRT to deflect the electron beam to provide
horizontal & vertical deflection; these are probably glued in
place (or at least, in bundles) using epoxy resin or something
similar.

Probably, the epoxy has cracked or come loose from whatever it's
anchored to at some point and what you can hear is some or all
of the windings on the horizontal deflection coil rattling back
and forth in time to the horizontal scan, in accordance with
Newton's laws ("For every action there is an equal and opposite
reaction"). Just maybe, it's some other part of your monitor's
yoke doing the same thing. It's irritating as hell if you can
hear it, but it shouldn't affect the monitor's performance or
reliability.

Possible solutions:
  - Pay someone to fix it. If you take it in for a service, be
*very*clear* about the problem or it probably won't get fixed
(chances are, most of their techs won't be able to hear it).
  - Swap monitors with someone who can't hear it;
  - Listen to a few hours of something load every day until the
problem goes away (what most people, wittingly or not, do);
  - Get a new monitor (big bucks for something that size).

following command:

mount -t ufs -o ufstype=sun /dev/sda1 /temp/sda1

The system mounts ok, though with a couple of errors ... when I list the
contents of "/temp/sda1" I get the following listing:

"VFS-fs error (device 08:01): ufs_readdir: bad entry in directory #2,

RE: Ethernet cards on network

2000-07-24 Thread Andrew McRobert

hi

Have you set up your kernel's routing tables? You can
check the current configuration with "netstat -r". You'll probably have to
execute a couple of command to tell the kernel where to send network
traffic, eg. something like this:
#$> route add -net X.X.X.0 netmask 255.255.255.0
eth0
#$> route add default gw X.X.X.1
eth0

... and a similar thing for the eth1
interface.

Perhaps if you could post the results of a "netstat -r"
command and a "netstat -a" command.

cheers

  Hello all,

This is my first time writing to this list so
forgive me if I do anything wrong.

I have a problem with trying to get a server
which is meant to be a proxy server up.

Everything works fine. The computer is able to
detect the 2 3Com ISA Etherlink III cards inside and I am able to configure
  them.

The reason why there are two network cards is so
that one network card would connect to the LAN and the other would connect to
an ISP on another floor who has provided a static IP and a gateway IP
  address.

  Problems/Questions are as below:

  (01) An error message keeps coming up saying
  eth0:transmit timed out Tx_status 00 status 2003 FIFO room 976. Can anyone
help by telling me what this means?

  (02) I have set up the etc/init.d/network file to
see both cards and yet I can't ping out. It can ping the 'lo' section and all
the range of addresses. I intend to use eth0 for connection to the ISP and
eth1 for connection to the LAN. Could someone please advise on what needs to
be done. I have never used it and have only just taken a short crash course
  from this book I bought.

  (03) Can someone also tell em how to find out if
TCP/IP is loaded. I know this may sound stupid but I can't tell.

  (04) How do I re-configure Linux so that should I
change hardware, it will be able to see it? The last time I was desperate and
decided to just re-install Debian from the CD which came with the book. I
  changed the NICs.

  (05) Is there anyone out there who is willing to
  be a mentor to me.

  Thanks in advance.

With Linux the device doesn't really matter in most cases, so your
question boils down to what is a good backup solution. The answer
depends on the situation (as always ;-).

I'm using tob with afio to backup my users (all ten or so of them).
Wrote some simple scripts for monthly full, weekly differential and
daily incremental backups and things work just fine. The archives
are written to external HD right now, but I may change to CD-RW or
MO disk.

You may also want to look at dump, taper, kbackup, afbackup and/or
amanda. The latter two seemed a bit overkill in my situation.

Hope this helps,

vmlinuz-2.2.12scsimod

2000-07-17 Thread Andrew McRobert
hi

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the above kernel, if it exists?

I'm trying to build boot disks for my Debian laptop, which only seems to
boot off the Tecra kernel image , of which I have v2.0.36, but that kernel
version doesn't load any PCMCIA drivers (ie. it can't find
/var/lib/modules/2.0.36/pcmcia ...). My root partition does have all the
correct drivers (including PCMCIA), for 2.2.12 version kernels.

thanks

Boot floppy - quick qstn

2000-07-16 Thread Andrew McRobert
hi all

I lost the boot floppy for my Linux laptop (Tosh. Sat Pro 4270), so I
downloaded the tecra images from the debian.org site. System boots fine with
the rescue disk, but after I mount the root partition (/dev/hda2), and
select the "Make Boot Floppy" option, i get the following error:

"Creation of boot floppy failed. Please make sure that the floppy was not
write protected, and that you put it in the first floppy drive. Try another
floppy if the problem persists."

I've now tried about 4-5 disks, new ones, so I'm sure it's not a media
problem. I've also tried switching to the second virtual terminal and
executing "mount /dev/fd0 /floppy", but that doesn't seem to help either.

any ideas?

many thanks

RE: Samba Headache

2000-07-07 Thread Andrew McRobert
hi Jay

First of all, I'd recommend subscribing to [EMAIL PROTECTED] It's a general
mailing list for SAMBA-related issues, and the people on it r very helpful
(generally :) ).

Ok, when you ran sambaconfig, did you specify the INETD option or to 'run as
daemon' option. In your case, if you're running the samba server on a home
network I'd go for the INETD option. Basically INETD will listen for SMB
session requests on port 139 and start up a smbd for the relevant
authenticated user. Setting up the INETD option can involve a little bit
more tinkering that the daemon option though, so I guess the second option
has convenience on its side.

Your problem at the moment sounds like the samba box isn't running SMB
services (ie. Samba as a daemon or through INETD). What happens when you
click on the linux box in Network Neighborhood?

ALso, do you have the 'homes' share configured? What security mode are you
using (SECURITY=USER?), and have you added users to the smbpasswd file (in
/etc/samba)?

tks
Andrew

RE: debian cron: How do I change when /etc/cron.daily/standard is scheduled?

2000-07-04 Thread Andrew McRobert
hi

Under Debian, you just need to edit the /etc/crontab file. The system
automatically reloads the file, you can double-check for the reload by
looking at the cron log, e.g. "tail -n 20 /var/log/cron.log", for an entry
like this:

"Jul 3 00:02:01 [servername] /usr/sbin/cron[295]: (*system*) RELOAD
(/etc/crontab)"

Basically yes. It means there is a connection to the SMTP port of
my.computer.dom from foreign.address.

We *presume* it is sending you mail... but it could be someone sending
email to one of your relayed domains, or VRFYing an email address. Does
this server deny routing email for non-local accounts?

Yes the BIOS is set to auto-detect my HD. It is weird though. When I go to
setup IDE devices, my DVD and CD-RW show up when in auto-mode, yet the
primary master says none when in auto mode (I left it in auto mode like it
was before.) When I boot up I get the GeForce ROM screen, then Phoenix BIOS,
RAM check, keyboard/mouse check and DVD and CD-RW OK in one screen. Then in
a screen that flashes by really fast that I could barely see in the top
section was an Ultra66 Controller ROM or something like that. Then in
another section I see four lines, and in the top line I made out LBA before
it disappeared. I can't remember what was below. Just so you know, Windows
98 does boot up and detects the hard drive just fine. I don't know.

I can get all the different ways to boot into the install program to work,
but once there, it says I have no hard drive. My partition table is (Not
exact):

1st DOS FAT32 vol: Windows98 Size: about 25 GB
2nd DOS FAT32 vol: Linux Size: 2176 MB
3rd and 4th empty

I used fips to shrink Windows98 and am going to change Linux partition into
a 2048 MB Linux Native and a 128 MB Linux Swap during setup. It is a 27 GB
HD. It's really weird because when I go to BIOS setup it isn't in there
either. In System properties in windows it says my HD controller is a Intel
82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller. Under disk drives in the same
place It has a non-removable disk IBM-DPTA -372730. I think this is my hard
drive. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks.

I'm using "mcrobert" as the username on both the NT and Samba box ...

It seems that the username from the win machine is null.
the message says "Username [insert here] is invalid on this system."

what name are you logining in your windows box with? you can change that
name and/or map user names for your samba account.

under global "username map = /etc/samba/users.map"
and in users.map [unix name] = "my name"

I've had this problem for a while, hoping someone knows what is causing it.
Users are unable to change their passwords for samba either through the SWAT

however, root can change passwords either through SWAT or the shell. I'm

2000-06-05 Thread Andrew McRobert
... I didn't notice any earlier mailings on this, so I'm coming in cold a
little. Trade dress in the US is like "passing off" in Australia. It doesn't
give you any more extensive protection than trade mark registration *e.g.
for the debian swirl* and is harder to prove, because with TM protection,
unlike 'trade dress'/passing off, you have to prove reputation in the
relevant trade or service mark.

... there's also the problem *at the risk of starting heated debate* that
the Debian web site layout is quite indistinctive ... and therefore a trade
dress infringement would be quite difficult to establish ... this is kinda

It seems as if this would bundle the Debian Swirl and the look of Debian's
website and cover any issues rather than dealing with it as copyright
infringement and/or trademark infringement.

Excerpt from an article dealing with Apple sueing Emachines for the eOne: on
MacWeek News

Trade dress

Trade dress is protectable as an unregistered trademark and is a subset of
trademark law and principles; it is designed to ensure that a product or
service's shape, appearance, color, packaging or even sales techniques are
not copied by a competing product. In the past, trade dress has been used by
an ironing-board maker to prevent competitors from duplicating its
distinctive green color and by Ferrari to block the production of
"replicars" that mimicked the shape of that company's distinctive cars.

A company filing a complaint of trade-dress violation must demonstrate two
things. First, it must prove that its trade dress is distinctive and linked
to the product's source in the mind of consumers. Second, it must show that
the competing product, by using the first company's trade dress, will likely
confuse customers into thinking that the competing company is affiliated
with the first company or that the competing goods are in some way approved
by it.

Some legal commentators, however, believe that Apple's cases are based not
on these factors but on related U.S. trade-dress statutes that protect trade
dress from dilution. Such cases don't depend on the likelihood of confusion
or direct competition; instead, they apply to any activity that reduces the
ability of the elements of the original product to signal the source,
quality or origin of the good and services associated with the product.

My guess is you have the wrong mail server name. A typical ISP might
have a server named 'mail.isp.net'. If that's not it, check your
username and password and make sure ~/.fetchmailrc is chmod 600.

My .fetchmail looks like:
#-
poll mail.isp.net
protocol pop3
timeout 60
username is $USER here
password

Samba passwords - Session setup error

2000-06-05 Thread Andrew McRobert
hi all

I'm getting the following error when a normal user tries to change their
password through SWAT, or through smbpasswd @ the command line:

"machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the session setup. Error was : ERRSRV - ERRbadpw
(Bad password - name/password pair in a Tree Connect or Session Setup are
invalid.).
The passwd for 'mcrobert' has NOT been changed"
The only explanation given in FAQs is that the "interfaces" list must
include 127.0.0.1. However, this doesn't work - I've tried the following
values for this setting ("eth0" & "[server ip]/22 127.0.0.1"). The odd thing
is that root can use either SWAT or smbpasswd on command line to change a
user's password. Perhaps the problem has something to do with the fact that
the smbpasswd program can't read the existing user password from
/etc/samba/smbpasswd (as the root user doesn't care about the old password).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had a similar problem problem. If I recall it was an issue with the way
passwords

want to
check this. Also, are you using shadow passwords on linux? If so, has the

PHP3 cgi/apache

2000-06-01 Thread Andrew McRobert
hi

...pls excuse the dumb-ness of this qstn, but how do I tell if I'm running
php3-apache OR php3-cgi? does the former run automatically when apache runs?
(provided there's a valid php3.ini file). If so, then how does php3-cgi run?

thanks

I've had a number of problems getting X to run on my Toshiba ... I know

message is "no high memory area available" (or words to that effect). I seem
to remember reading something about Linux + 128MB ram & greater ... is there
some issue there? My laptop has slightly more than 128 ...

debian has a doc-rfc package containing many of these. If you don't
want the whole package (it's pretty big) just do a net search on the
RFC. There are a number of servers that mirror them.

Hi,
i have set up debian base system and was advised to get on the net with that
computer to get the rest of the system. I am having trouble configuring my
internet connecti0on. I have it on a win computer, and the terminal window
comes up with a menu, where i switch to ppp and then log in. I tried to set
this up with pppconfig, and entered a pre login chat bbut i can't get it to
work. Is there a way i can bring up somethin resembling a terminal window
on a debian? Thanks for your help

2000-05-30 Thread Andrew McRobert
hi

.. this has actually been a long-running saga on the list (well for yours
truly anyhow). Both laptops are running 3.3.6 (mine's 3.3.6-6), not sure
about the other. The S3 Savage card is supported in all versions of 3.3.6
(apparently). I've also downloaded a specific XF86_SVGA server for my card.
The generic SVGA server didn't recognise my chipset, but the new one does
(which is something of a breakthrough). However, when I run 'startx' all I
get is a blank screen. If I Ctrl+F1 to TTY1 then I see the message "explicit
kill or server shutdown". The output of startx is below, I'm running out of
ideas...

pon is some sort of script who calls "pppd call connection".
Gnome-Dialup is some sort of front-end for "pppd call", as pon is.

Ok I have another dumb question.
If I want to install X Windows what do I do. I have already tried "apt-get
install xserver-svga" and it installs, but when I try to run the XF86Config
I get "command not found" and I get the same for XF86Setup. What did I
forget to install?

FW: Tape Backup Problem

2000-05-16 Thread Andrew McRobert
... i'm using tar & smbtar on a Dell Poweredge (with SONY DDS3 tape drive)

little program & very useful for your shell scripts ... backing up several
gig with no problems, I'd stay away from GUI tape drive managers, there's
really no need for them

Plain tar is nice in some ways, but unless there's hardware
compression, using compression is risky. I've been using afio, which
allows you to compress file-by-file. Like tar, it fits nicely into
scripts, and creates reasonably accessible archives.

RE: S3, S3V, or XF86_SVGA server

2000-05-15 Thread Andrew McRobert
I'd be interested in any variants of the XF86_SVGA server for Savage cards
that you've got ... X Windows is saying that I'm running a unrecognised S3
chipset ... then defaults to VGA server @ 640x480

H, guess you're right on that. I was running a Savage4-based card in
my system some weeks ago, and it only worked well with the SVGA server. We
also tried that on a laptop system with Savage4 onboard and had severe
problems there both running XF 3.3.6 or one of the S4-modified servers (as
XF86_S3SAV by Creative which happens to be a patched XF3.3.3-SVGA-server)
and, finally, got the machine working fine there with framebuffer support
and the Framebuffer-X-Server... :))

Hello,

Explanations and answers are interspersed below:

No, this is not a Toshiba problem. The pixels (dots) on the laptop are
physical little cells, each with it's own transistors to make it work.
The pixels don't get bigger or smaller when you switch to a higher or
lower resolution -- just more or less are activated by the display
adapter in the computer. That's why the picture becomes larger or
smaller.

On a CRT monitor (like most desktops), the circuitry adjusts it's scan
size to fill the physical screen, regardless of the resolution, so the
picture fills the screen...

please see below for an explanation of the real problem here...

This is because Win98 is going to a resolution which fills the screen,
likely 1024x768.

[much snipping here...]

You don't say what video chip your system has, for now I'll assume it's
using the XF86_SVGA server. Look at the lines labelled 'Modes' in the
sections below. With the exception of the
"The 16-color VGA server" and "The Mono server" sections, all the modes
are 640x400 or 640x480. You aren't using either of them -- they
