gnome-software is using up my internet data

2018-11-15 Thread Anil Duggirala
Hello,
Ive got 2 questions:
1. The process gnome-software is downloading up of 10 MB every time (or many
times) I connect to the internet, this is killing my internet data quota.
Can someone tell me how to disable this, what exactly is gnome-software doing
(it does not seem to be searching for updates)?

2. Is there a way to set a metered connection in debian so every time I connect
using usb tethering the system knows not to use more data than completely
necessary at the time?
Or every time I use a particular connection it know not to use more data than
necessary?

thanks very much,

max volume not max volume

2018-07-26 Thread Anil Duggirala
Im running Stretch and Gnome with whatever sound setup corresponds to that. I
turn my volume completely up from my my DE (Gnome), however the volume doesnt
actually go to its max. Running alsamixer in the terminal, initially also shows
the master to be at the max, pressing F6 and choosing a different sound device
(not default) shows me more controls and shows me a master slider that is not
at the max level. Could someone please explain what might be happening and how
to correct this?
thanks,

I did make a search and found this package, an older version 1.9.98-1 which

trusting .deb packages

2018-07-24 Thread Anil Duggirala
I am thinking about installing the Mega.nz app on my Debian Stretch
installation. They provide a .deb package. Is there anything I can do to ensure
this is a safe package? To know that this package will not create a security
vulnerability on my system? What is the minimum security procedure to follow
when installing third party provided .deb packages?

Why has this become a "default" behavior, at least with Gnome, in Debian
Stretch then ? A notification appears asking the user to upgrade and restart
the whole system. If it is not necessary, why has this feature been implemented
as part of the DE?

Software and Updates Restart notification Stretch

2018-06-12 Thread Anil Duggirala
hello,
I am getting a notification in Gnome saying there are packages to be
updated and I get the option to click on a button saying Update and

restart my system to upgrade any package in Debian?

.deb packages and security

2018-06-04 Thread Anil Duggirala
hello,
I know installing .deb packages downloaded from websites is not a good practice
in terms of software management in Debian. I would like to know if I should
have security concerns when installing a .deb package "manually" (using gdebi
for example) ?
Is it possible that by downloading the skype .deb package and installing it, I
am creating a security vulnerability in a Debian system?
thanks,

messed up release in apt

2018-04-30 Thread Anil Duggirala
hello,
I mistakenly added an etc/apt/sources.list line for "jessie"(backports)

apt and installed Wine (along with many packages, some i386) from the
jessie-backports source (i.e. apt install wine/jessie-backports).
Please tell me how I can locate all wrongly installed packages and
remove them, and install correct packages from stretch-backports,

I did get the volume up to its usual level (I believe) by going to alsamixer. I
had tried this before but had not manually selected the relevant sound card

Dont know if I can intrude like this, but I am having getting the same
notification at boot time, sometimes. I am on a dual-boot with Win 10.
hwclock gives me:
2018-03-10 21:19:03.264101-0500
and date (less than a second later):
Sat Mar 10 21:19:16 -05 2018
So this is the opposite time difference than the OP.
My /etc/adjtime does contain the "LOCAL" flag.
ntp is not installed in my system and
timedatectl status outputs:

RTC time: Sat 2018-03-10 21:31:07
   Time zone: America/Bogota (-05, -0500)
 Network time on: yes
NTP synchronized: no
 RTC in local TZ: yes

Warning: The system is configured to read the RTC time in the local time zone.
This mode can not be fully supported. It will create various problems
with time zone changes and daylight saving time adjustments. The RTC
time is never updated, it relies on external facilities to maintain it.
If at all possible, use RTC in UTC by calling

I appreciate any help,

Thanks a lot. That clears up my first question. However, can someone tell me if
they know how to get these:

getting the right and complete firmware

2018-01-27 Thread Anil Duggirala
upon installing Debian stretch I got a notice about missing firmware (Atheros).
I managed to find a package that, apperently, contained some of the missing
firmware, since the list of missing firmware was diminished. I am still missing
some firmware, I will find it eventually, but my question is: Can I be sure I
have the correct and required firmware if I am not getting any errors from
dmesg ? or upon boot?
Is there any tool that will help me address these issues?
thanks,

Yes, that is what I am thinking. I have often accesed (viewed) Windows
files from linux but not the other way around. I trust 10 times more on
Linux security than in Windows, thus having dual-boot in my mind,
diminishes my security ten-fold. Is there any safeguard in Windows (or
in Linux) to avoid this access to a different partition?

How does the boot partition play a role here? Is the software planted in
Windows (or Linux) and then executed at boot?

thanks very much.

2017-12-12 Thread Anil Duggirala
Ill ask another question here. Is having dual boot Windows 10 (or 7 or
8) and Linux a security risk? Will malicious Windows programs gain
access to Linux files (files in the Linux partition?)? Does GPT help
here?
thanks,

I would think precisely the opposite. Gaining control over the software
you use will prove really useful only when you are planning to use it
for a long time. As an example, I would imagine that a serious person
might require a very specific functionality from the software, then they
could just write the code to achive this function.

Check out Varicad (.com) too, its is propriatary but you can try it for
free.

DraftSight is proprietary software with various limitations. They only
provide a package for Ubuntu and Fedora, I would not attempt installing
that on Debian as is. Librecad or Qcad are the best options to my

I have checked my add-ons, there are only 2 well known ones installed, IcedTea

I will try deleting the .mozilla folder shortly and report,
Subsequently I will try to install some pop-up blocker, even though I have
never had the need for this, and as I said it looks something beyond usual
pop-ups.thanks again,

Was anything changed in the default configuration of Firefox. It feels
like Windows with all of these pop-ups, this is the first time I
experience anything like this in a linux installation.

Thanks guys, the output of grep -B4 'Module class: X.Org Video Driver'
~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log is
[58.352] (II) LoadModule: "intel"
[58.353] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so
[58.380] (II) Module intel: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
[58.380]    compiled for 1.19.0, module version = 2.99.917
[58.380]    Module class: X.Org Video Driver

So that makes it clear, the intel driver is bein used, is there
anything else I can do to improve my graphics. Is it possible that
installing Mate caused trouble of some sort. I tell you the truth, my
solution to many problems has been to simply reinstall the system. I
believe my system is not correctly configured in some way, for example,
composing this email in Evolution in the little composer window, if I
want to delete several words of text and press and hold my backspace
key, it goes back at a certain speed, so I have to wait to see how back
I will be taken with the time I have held pressed the backspace key.
Performance is just not good in general, and I believe this laptop
should certainly be able to handle Gnome, and guessing I would have
issues with any other DE.
I appreciate any help. For now, my plan, when I have time, is to
reinstall Debian Stretch, dont touch anything and configure to load
intel driver, and hope that any issues have been resolved.
thanks,

driver, I dont know how to check this in my Xorg log. I am still having
an issue I do believe pertains to Gnome. The Applications menu in Gnome
Classic is sluggish at best, as I described before, moving the mouse
around it starts to dramatically increase cpu use, if I am playing a
video and then go to this menu, the video starts freezing. Also, my
scrolling is still not as smooth as it is in Windows (sorry for this
comparison, but it is what I have). Or, for example, the Gnome
animations upon closing or opening a window or in the Desktop Overview,
are not smooth. I believe I still dont have the best graphics
configuration and would like more help. I have pasted my Xorg.log here

Hi. thanks, I have followed those instructions completely now and the
situation improved notably, scrolling my Inbox and in LibreOffice is
better. I also noticed that right after logging in, previously the
screen would show the black terminal screen (again) while loading the
desktop, now I see a prettier gray Gnome background at that time.
I have also uninstalled Mate (uninstalled all packages with "mate"
string in them), it seemed to make things (graphics) worst, and also
choosing an item from Places in the top bar in Gnome Classic would open
Caja instead of Files, it also made the Applications menu notably
slower. Should I take any other steps at completely removing Mate??
I dont know if my graphics are perfect now, but at least I can work
nicely in my PC now. Isnt using the Intel driver usually a better option
than using another?? I really need to learn about this (modeset) things
to be able to figure out what driver I am using.
thanks a lot,

As more examples of the symptoms, in Firefox, scrolling through my
email's Inbox list, is a little sluggish, however, scrolling through a
site that has images and other things (rt.com), I can scroll up and down
more smoothly.
In the Applications Dropdown from the top bar in Gnome Classic, it
sometimes is hard to select an item, I have to move the mouse around a
little bit for it to actually "stand on" (highlight) an item, the whole
menu is a little bit sluggish too.
thanks

I had just figured that out. In my sources.list I have deb entries with
"stretch", not "testing", when Stretch is released as stable, will I
remain in Stretch and not continue getting the Testing packages ?(that
is what I want)

Too late. Since it was being proposed I did make the upgrade, I cant say
for sure but no changes appear to have happened, maybe its taking longer
for the initial load of the graphical interface in general (login and
desktop), but cant be sure.

I appreciate your help and support, I really want Debian to work for me,
I bought an Asus laptop because I thought they had better support in
linux, they ship some of their PCs with linux (actually their EEEpc
originally ONLY shipped with a modification of Debian)

As another symptom I have now is for example, scrolling down or up on a
simple Libreoffice (docx) document is not smooth, it appears to be a
purely graphical issue, not something beyond that in terms of
processing, but I can be sure.

I have tried installing Mate, really I dont see a lot of difference at
all with regard to any of my issues, actually I have a problem in Mate,
it will not load the desktop background image and it is stuck in black.

thanks again,

Sorry for top-posting, I have taken a clue now.
I deactivated Animations in Gnome (Tweak Tool - Appearance), this
appears to have helped, dragging windows around is not so laggy and
video playback does not appear to be crashing, and is running more
smoothly, however the video playback is not really smooth.

What does this mean?? Is there any other driver for me to try??

Please help me, do I really have the right driver and firmware for my
graphics card already?? Looking at package linux-image-amd64 in Synaptic
shows 2 versions 4.9+79 (now), 4.9+80 (testing), this upgrade has been
suggested by the automatic update app in Gnome. What does (now) and
(testing) mean in Synaptic there. I have left my sources.list as is
after install, "stretch" is the keyword, will my pc stay on stretch once
it is released or continue upgrading to "testing"??

Someone had said I could update my BIOS (and something about linux mode,
I cannot find that), could that possibly help??

Greg: I do believe I am not using a dm since looking for lightdm or gdm
or lxdm does not show installed packages.

I have one more question, doing apt-get upgrade mentions
linux-image-amd64 is being "held back" I am currently on 4.9.0-2, could
this be related?

If Gnome is not for me, then I can live with that (someone said
(debian-laptop list) they have my exact same laptop and is running
Gnome, I dont know how he did it), I guess I can go to Mate if
necesssary, could the video playback issue also be resolved this way??

thanks a lot, sorry for the long email

Hello,
I have upgrade to Stretch, and my system is loading the graphical
interface (Gnome). However, I believe my graphics are sluggish, video
playback at some points starts freezing and sometimes just becomes
unwatchable (it starts using up a lot of CPU power). In the
recommendations here
(https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/Intel/NUC5PPYH) it says to
install non-free firmware, the Debian installer asked for
firmware-realtek, I provided it and I believe that I installed. But what
non-free firmware could possible correct my graphics problems? what am I
missing. I am happy my system is working, but graphics work better in
Windows, and that is morally inacceptable to me.
thanks a lot,

Thanks a lot Felix and Micheal.
I will follow your advice, and for the first time ever, use Debian
Testing. I guess when Stretch is released I will be able to install
that, correct? So I will be able to go back to using a stable release
right? I'm really afraid of testing, the whole reason I like Debian is
for its stability, but using stable would require me to install various
packages from backports maybe?? I did try installing that newer kernel,
that didn't work.

Re: Oh no something has gone wrong! after reinstalling Debian and Gnome.

2017-05-21 Thread Anil Duggirala
Thanks everyone for your responses. I did not expect such quick and full
response. I also really don't believe it has anything to do with
partitioning (Debian deleted the partitions and created exactly
corresponding partitions with guided partitioning).
More info: When I installed initially with LXDE, I had horrible graphics
and no touchpad, upon installing the Linux-image from backports (4.9),
these problems were resolved. I have tried installing Linux-image 4.9
from backports (using the command line) now again, the problem persists.
However, in the debian-laptop users list, I guy who said he has the
exact same laptop (Asus X441SA) said he is running Gnome-Classic
(Gnome), I have tried asking him if he got this problem but have
received no response from him.
All commands outputs here are in a new installation (I have installed 3
times now), with the regular kernel (3.16)
Outputs:
inxi commands say 'command not found'
lspci :
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Device
[8086:22b1] (rev 35)
Subsystem: ASUSTek Computer Inc. Device [1043:1290]
00:0b.0 Signa processing controller [1180]: Intel Corporation Device
[8086:22dc] (rev 35)
Subsystem: ASUSTek Computer Inc. Device [1043:1290]
00:13.0 SATA Controller [0106]: Intel Corporation Device [8086:22a3]
(rev 35)

I have pasted Xorg log at https://paste.debian.net/933539

Should I just try Mate or XFCE?? is it possible that works?

thanks a lot,

Oh no something has gone wrong! after reinstalling Debian and Gnome.

2017-05-20 Thread Anil Duggirala
I had installed Windows 10 and Debian 8.8 (with LXDE) in dual boot
(UEFI) and everything was working. I wanted to reinstall Debian, so I
installed Debian again by deleting the debian partitions (I think
correctly) using the Debian installer partitioner and choosing the
Guided use largest continuous space option, this time I installed with
the Gnome desktop environment. I am getting a Oh No, Something has gone
wrong message, the system cannot recover' message after booting into
Debian. Should I have deleted the prior Debian entry in the EFI
partition? does this have anything to do with this error? Is there any
other solution to this problem?
thanks a lot,

working now, and the temps appear to be in a good range, my BIOS did not
show me anything in regards to fans though,

why are libraries in jessi more up to date

2015-05-16 Thread Anil Duggirala
Im a newbie and would like to know why libraries in Jessie are some much
more up to date than in wheezy ? If the libraries have been tested and
are stable then why arent they available in the wheezy repositories. I
had a terrible time, trying to get a newer version of glibc to play some
games in wheezy, and the version in jessie is much more up to date,
thanks for the info,

Re: alternative to avidemux?

Im using avconv to do this, it is a part of libav-tools package, and its
probably faster if you are doing this on a regular basis, use the -ss
option along with the -t option. Im also pretty sure it can add a
subtitle channel, although I havent done it,

Re: Debian right for my use?

2015-01-01 Thread Anil Duggirala
Ive invested quite some time looking for CAD software running natively
on linux, there isnt much. There is one 3D CAD software running
flawlessly on my Debian machine, its called Varicad. Correct me if Im
wrong but Virtualbox will take away some of your graphics card power..
Besides that, Im also running Virtualbox on my Debian machine, without
any trouble. I would not go with Wine to run CAD software because there
are just too many things that might not work. Overall Debian is much
more stable than Ubuntu and I think is a good starting place for you to
get into the linux world.
Good luck, let me know how you do,
by the way, what CAD software you using?
