ORL

If I was to do that I would : - Install the various available themes: apt install sddm-theme-* - Check the installed themes : ls /usr/share/sddm/themes - Try these themes by changing the conf in /etc/sddm.conf [Theme] Current=insert_theme_name_here - Copy one of the folders in /usr/share/sddm/themes to a custom folder next to the other themes and make the changes you like there. The entrypoint is the Main.qml file that you will want to adapt. - A more in depth introduction to QML can be found at [0]. I’m myself not an expert in this so you may want to ask on Qt or KDE support channels. Feel free to share your changes. If you do so your changes will need to respect the themes original licenses found in /usr/share/doc/sddm-theme-*/copyright. > Also, on Kde desktop, how can I switch to traditional hierarchical program > selection menu, as shown in the screen snapshot attached? I don’t see a hierarchical menu in your screenshot. :) But there is a hierarchical menu in Plasma 5, look for « launcher » or « menu » in the list of applets and you should find what you’re looking for. If you want to celebrate it, please consider attending a Debian release party, or hosting your own! See https://wiki.debian.org/ReleasePartyStretch for more information. The final weeks up to the release = On 2017-06-03 at the latest, we will tag all remaining RC bugs with either stretch-ignore OR stretch-will-remove. Packages that have RC bugs tagged with stretch-will-remove will be removed the weekend before the release unless they have been fixed in testing prior to that. Please note that the automatic removals are still in effect and may remove packages before that deadline. In the last week prior to the freeze, testing will be completely frozen and only emergency bug fixes will be considered in this period. Please consider Friday the 2017-06-09 at 13:00 UTC the absolute last moment for changes to stretch. Changes that are not in testing at that time will not be included in stretch for the initial release. However, you can still fix bugs in stretch via point releases if the changeset follows the rules for updates in stable. In summary: * Deadline: > 2017-06-09 13:00 UTC < - Your changes must have migrated to stretch *before* then - Upload several days *before* the deadline * If a change is late, it may still be applicable for an update via a point release after stretch has been released. * Check [List of stretch-will-remove bugs] for packages that will be removed. - Some bugs have been tagged already - Packages may be removed before then (e.g. by auto-removals) Future updates to stretch up to the freeze =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- As we are entering the final part of the freeze, please keep future changes and unblock requests limited to: * RC bugs * Patches for crashes/memory leaks/etc. * Security bug fixes * Regressions compared to jessie * jessie to stretch upgrade issues * Documentation fixes + translation updates (preferably bundled with a fix for at least one of the problems listed above and nothing else) We will only accept targeted fixes. Yop !

To: To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-french-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Need informations to point out a potential bug
Hi there, I maybe raised a hare on the Debian Etch (up-to-date) r8169 module. It was used to manage an onboard Ethernet chipset (mobo is Gigabyte GA-G33M-DS2R, the chipset is very likely Realtek RTL8111B - complete designation : dev_8168subsys_e0001458rev_01). The problem is rather strange : it shows up only during communications in a direction (server to client), only when the client is Windows (tested with 3 XP pro clients, no other versions available), and only when it is the client who initiates the transfer. The symptom is rather simple: silly speeds (generally between 40 and 300 kB/s on a wired 100 Mbps Ethernet LAN). iperf : 94 Mbps when the server is run on Windows, 14 Mbps when the server is run on Debian. Testing with SMB and FTP just confirmed iperf's diagnostic : getting files using FTP from the client shows a 1.5 MB/s speed. SMB is more impacted by the problem, probably because of the smb.conf socket options. No problem when the transfer is initiated by Debian : putting a file on a Windows share (usung smbclient put) shows up about 11 Mbps speed. No problem with the other direction (XP clients to Debian). Since i was unable to solve the problem, i just added a PCI Ethernet add-on card. Realtek chipset, managed by the 8139too module : everything's just flying, thanks. Since i spent a dozen hours on the problem, i just thought it could be helpful to report about that. Questions now : is it a bug ? If yes, how to verify it wasn't already reported (my Google-Fu didn't find anything, but i'm just a grasshopper...) At last, if it wasn't already described, how to do it ? That's my first time, i don't want to screw up the whole thing ;) Thanks for any input -- Aurélien -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble?
Re: imprimante samsung ML-1610
Re: ICQ with Linux
I have not tried ICQ or Jabber yet but you didn't mention Kopete and it manages them as it manages MSN and yahoo or other. Maybe give it a try ? Rodolfo Medina wrote: I've been following the various suggestions come from this list about the possibilities Linux offers to chat: my family want to use `messenger' and ICQ, and before resigning myself to use MS Windows I wanted to check all the possibilities. My impression is that `gaim' manages to use the MSN protocol quite fine, whereas for ICQ, nor `licq' neither `centericq' neither `gabber' (through jabber network) can satisfactorily replace the richness of original ICQ for MS Windows. They only allow the mere IM function but don't really allow (as far as I saw) wide users search or multiple chat. So I'll have to use MS Windows, although I wouldn't like. If anybody has a different experience, i.e. finds that licq, or any other application can perform those functions just or almost just as the original does - and this means that I didn't manage to use them properly - please let me know, I'll be glad to have been wrong. Yes. This was just to make sure it's not related to gettext having problems in installation. I get the same output. 'apt-file list gettext' shows also nothing. Re: RE: Sarge NFS Root: INIT: id 1 respawning too fast
Hi there, (Please excuse my probably pityful english - it's not an excuse, but my native language is French) I just ran into the same problem : - Made a fresh debootstrap install - WGETed kernel 2.6.16.1, compiled it and its module (make menuconfig ; make bzImage ; make modules ; make modules_install ; moved and renamed bzImage to /boot and so on) - Finally succeeded to boot an a full RAID1 system (except from the swap, RAID0) (it was a lot of non-fun to achieve this since i'm urged) - (It could be of some interest to mention the tutorial i mainly (but not only) used to do all of that.) - At boot, just after cron started, same error : all six inits failed. I made a somewhat similar install a year ago, and had no problem with special devices. I googled the symptom, and found this FAQ Examining the content of /dev, i'm really surprised to find very few special devices... As for TTYs, there where only tty and tty0. No PTYs. No HDxN. The absents list is long, so i'll stop there. I just created some missing TTYs (tty1 to tty19) using mknod, but it obviously is not the way it should be done... It seems to solve the problem (only seems, 'cause i guess the system should load startx to display a logon screen - i "apt-get install"ed kde kde-i18n-fr, and it doesn't... When manually starting x, i have a "fatal server error: no screens found" error, which is probably normal since the needed special device is not there too). I made a somewhat similar install a year ago, and had no problem at all with special devices. So, i'm looking for the normal way such special devices should be created... I'm not very familiar with Linux or Unix systems, so the following questions may sound stupid... But i'm really trying to learn, so answers will be welcomed, as will be pointers to internet or book resources ! Should they be installed along with Debian ? Since some of the devices found on a standard Knoppix seems to relate to kernel options (rfcommNN, isdnNN) , maybe i missed some critical option during kernel compilation ? Thanks a lot in advance for any help !!

It still provides more static type support than completely dynamically-typed languages like Ruby and Python. True. But how many errors in Python/Ruby programs are type errors ? And if you use generics as provided in Java 1.5+ then this problem is resolved. Only downcasting from collections is resolved with generics in 1.5, not the covariance/contravariance problem (or the general type unsafety of Java), is it ? OTOH, Working programs have been written in dynamically typed languages for ages. Yes, industrial strength programs (whetever that means). And I don't know any serious study about this topic. All we have is anecdotal developper experience/opinions. But you will be able to judge how important is static typing by yourself, again, when trying ruby/python/lisp ... This mail list isn't really the proper venue for this discussion so I'll just make one reply then shut up. All the following is of course just my opinion. Right. I just can't resist a last followup ... Ruby/Python are excellent languages where the developers on the project are experienced and talented. (Doesn't that mean that talented experienced developpers avoid Java and practice Python/Ruby whenever possible ?) Strangely, I have found that python is an excellent language where developpers are complete beginners, because of less hurdles from code syntax to execution. Especially with students (I was one not long ago and incidentely frequented some). However this isn't usually the case with any industrial scale development; the normal corporate IT department has people with a wide range of abilities, and in that situation the support of a statically typed language can be very useful (IMO). That's marketing. Was never really proven. Static typing is of course sometimes a good performance hack, when applicable (which it is not, ironically, on Java/Smalltalk oo-like languages). And anyway it is *extremely* difficult to sell non-technical management on development in Ruby/Python. Java's marketing has, however, raised its awareness level to a point where the senior suits will actually consider it. So from a purely practical point of view, if you are interested in learning tools that will be of use in a commercial environment then Java is much more useful to know than Ruby/Python. Oh, I imagine if the suits were allowed to dictate the choice of building materials for planes instead of engineers, we would fly in wood and cast iron (proven materials which most industry worker have already met in their lives) planes :) hmmm, I decided to learn the tools that could help make me a better worker, not agreable to the suits. There is an aspect of Java that is quite misunderstood : it is a good language / platform not because of some technical merits (it is really a rehash of 60's technology) but because of the division of labor it allows in the industry (and some other social or political properties) : * separation from the designers (or so-called software architects) that draw UML pictures and the coders (so-called code-monkeys that do the supposedly unintelligent translation from high-level pictures to PL level) * mass availability of Java programmers (thus supposed interchangeability of those) * good marketing pressure from Sun and other big players to make Java the new COBOL All the hype about Java being an OO-language (a very poor one indeed) and bringing encapsulation to programming in the large masks the fact that the big organizations that use Java need to encapsulate, indeed, the many mediocre (read : insufficiently trained on theoretical and practical levels, thus cheaper) programmers that make their huge dev. teams. I pretty much agree with this. Java is a middle-of-the-road compromise language. I don't think it's a very poor OO language, it's an average one. Interesting. What would you put below the Java average, then ? The only revolutionary thing about Java is the fact that it compiles to portable bytecode (well, it isn't actually the first to do that either). Smalltalk did that when Java was not even a straw in Gosling's eye. Also, see Perl and Python (all compiled to portable bytecodes). But, in a twist of fate, in Java's server niche that is almost irrelevant. And J2EE was horribly over-complicated, a fine example of design-by-committee. However under pressure from alternative nicely-designed frameworks like Spring and Hibernate, J2EE is becoming more streamlined and easier to use. J2EE 1.5 should

They are more lightweight and pleasant to use. Do yourself a favor, don't go the Java way ;-). Let me give you my reasoning for thinking about going down the java route. First. I have worked for the same system development company for the past 33 years. However the last time I programmed commercially (ie I was paid to write software) was in about 1978 (in PDP 11 assembler). I was probably still very technically involved with software development during the 1980's when I was head of a product development unit in my company and and remained responsible for the strategic technical vision for the product. In mid 1990's I started moving over to becoming a business expert (in Electricity Competion), and although I did some data and process modelling as a way of understanding requriements, I have not done any technical work since. Two. Because I do no technical work at work - although with a technology company - I play with the technology at home. It has become my hobby This goes against Java for sure ... (I'm sure everyone there understand it's only my opinion : flame disclaimer). Three: I am very much at the front end sales and bidding process. We frequently bid applications requiring web front ends to a database, the core software which we use and then enhance is almost always a java servlet/JSP implementation, which I don't properly understand the issues of. I would like to understand better the technical nuances of what is being bid - and understand what is hard and what is easy to do. Good. Then indeed, go ahead and try the Java way. But don't forget that while you will be able to discover the problems with the Java way on your own for sure, you will see more of them when you will have tried some of the branches of the alternative. But you can obviously only do one thing at a time. I have heard the arguments (specifically the ones suggesting using ruby on rails) which I only partially buy into (ruby terseness seems partially to be lack of type checking - does this really work in industrial strength application development?) but I have no frame of reference for the the other side of the argument. Can you define industrial strength application development ? It would help a lot frame an answer on this. For the record, the static typing in Java is acknowledged as one of the worst imaginable (in short : it is mandatory but you have to go through its backdoor (read : defeat it) all the time to make working programs). OTOH, Working programs have been written in dynamically typed languages for ages. Yes, industrial strength programs (whetever that means). And I don't know any serious study about this topic. So I have two reasons to go java. One to understand what technical people at work are telling me, the other to really understand the other side of the my programming language is best arguments. But I will go the Ruby route if this doesn't work out. But I have to try Java first. There is an aspect of Java that is quite misunderstood : it is a good language / platform not because of some technical merits (it is really a rehash of 60's technology) but because of the division of labor it allows in the industry (and some other social or political properties) : * separation from the designers (or so-called software architects) that draw UML pictures and the coders (so-called code-monkeys that do the supposedly unintelligent translation from high-level pictures to PL level) * mass availability

Le lundi 13 juin 2005 à 00:58 -0400, john doe a écrit : Sorry, I triggered the send button before finishing. Here is the full story: My installation procedure is as follows: 1. Install Sarge with a single IDE drive attached to the machine; 2. after a successful installation, attached a SATA drive the machine, did cfdisk/mke2fs, added into /etc/fstab to make /dev/sda1 mount at startup. 3. restarted machine again, here is the error message (roughly): Device /dev/sda1 doesn't exist or invalid fsck failed. Please repair manually. CONTROL-D will exit from this shell and continue system startup Yet if I remove the line in /etc/fstab, and the startup will be okay and I can manually do fdisk -l /dev/sda and mount /dev/sda1 without any problem. So my suspicion is that the related ata kernel modules are not loaded when fsck tries to look into the drive. I'm also suspecting this problem wont happen if the sata drive were present at the time of installing sarge. So now how can fix this problem at the post-install stage? I'll probably looking the modprobe family of tools... look at modconf it will let you choose the sata driver, and will make your choice permanent -jd ** This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. I am totally clueless about what to do with the remaining 13 CDs, why I need them, how to install them etc. In fact, unless you plan to live on a broadband-less Island, unconnected to the outside world except by avian carriers (note that TCP/IP over pigeons has been successfully tested, it's only the latency that causes problems), your 13 CDs are probably useless. 99,99% of debian (except the small Netinst CD needed to bootstrap the system) can install itself straight from the Net. You see, the 13 remant CDs contain each approximatively 7,1 % of the complete Debian archive for the soon-to-be-stable Sarge release, 99% of which will be of no use for your customers. They contain various APPLICATIONS bundled as PACKAGES. But the remainging 1% may be great for you (and them). Can you please help! I am trying to evaluate Debian to recommend it to my customers. Customers of Intel Corp ? By the way, do you intend to evaluate what's Debian is worth for your customers just by discovering it yourself right now ? Is that really fair ? Re: I need help with TeX administration on Debian Sarge

The instructions from ctan.org on managing a one-person TeX system seem to assume a starting point in the TeX config files that differs from what was set up by aptitude. which point ? please give details I can't make out what I really need to do, and I'm almost certain that Debian tetex package eliminates the need for steps that are required for non-Debian tetex users, but what steps? Where can I find help that is specific to the Debian package? Where can I just find documentation that has been edited to reflect Debian package reality? Please give pointers to the real Debian stuff. please give information on how the ctan stuff differs from the debian directory or conf file layout, most of the time, Debian is *very* conforming to this kind of stuff (yeah, how precise is this !)
This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program.

? merci de votre aide. begin:vcard fn;quoted-printable:Aur=C3=A9lien Labrosse n;quoted-printable:Labrosse;Aur=C3=A9lien adr:;;;Grenoble;;38000;Grenoble email;internet:[EMAIL PROTECTED] x-mozilla-html:TRUE url:http://aurelien.freenet.ath.cx version:2.1 end:vcard signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature
