Mail, Kernel and X
i have recently had to reinstall Debian because i ran out of space on the / directory. Having used fetchmail to get mail from my isp my /var/spool/mail directory was filled while getting messages (pop3). After the re-install i get messages (using the -v option in fetchmail) that a number of messages were not flushed and that smtp connection for the rest of the messages is refused. I think this may be because i have a 'half' message on the server. Any suggestions. I am using icewm set to 640*480 mode but it does not look correct on my screen . I have tried ^+Alt+numeric -/+ to adjust this but cannot do it. My monitor is old so i dont know the exact specs, and i have specified a generic VGA card in the config (16bpp). I'm not sure how to adjust this I also wish to compile my own kernel (make xconfig) but because i dont know the specs for my vid card, monitor and sound card (soundblaster 16 clone i think) will i run into trouble? Help much appreciated. Network File Server
We are just about to go ahead and upgrade our network. All machines are Wx89 workstations. We were going to use NT Server as a file server but since using Debian i thought about Linux as a file server. I'm sure lots of you out there are doing this so any suggestions (hardware, software packages) and comments (problems etc) would be a appreciated. I was going to get something like a 686 300MMX 128MB RAM 32X CDROM UPS etc. Thanks, Stephen Lavelle Austanners Wet Blue Pty Ltd. ~ Australian Tanned Wet Blue Leather ~ 110 Heales Road, Lara, Geelong, Australia 3212 Tel:++(03)52742232 Fax:++(03)52742350 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

You should make sure you get a 10/100 Mbs Ethernet card, even if you only have a 10 Mbs network at the moment. For software, you'll want to use Samba as the file server. You can also use this as a print server, and together with LPRng and cti-ifhp it works quite well with HP-compatible laser printers. Re: dselect-help!!!!!!!
I had this problem with a laptop (no CD ROM drive , no network) and solved it by using the ftp option in dselect. You just have to be careful to state the correct path if you're using a mirror site. Just set up your isp details using pppconfig, then pon yourprovidername start dselect and choose option 1 (access method), answer all the questions and way you go. For instance, what's the difference between 'Install from a hard disk partition partion (NOT YET MOUNTED)' and 'Install from a filesystem which is already mounted'. Which one should I pick up since i've just installed Debian from floppies?) Basically, I'm looking for : - a manual which explains carefully and with examples what to do when using dselect. - if this is not available, is it possible to have a few directions about how to install X Windows with dselect, notably the very first steps -something in plain english for idiots or retardos. (What i have now on my lap-top computer is plain Linux. I can't use a CD ROM and can't yet get access to the Internet since I don't know how to setup my PCMCIA card. For now my priority is to install X Windows, the Mouse and have some graphical interface to navigate through Linux). Thanks for your help! I don't know of any good documentation, but I might can give you a couple of pointers. dselect is a front-end to dpkg. dpkg is the real installer/uninstaller. Apt is the next generation front-end to replace dselect, but it's not quite ready for prime-time. You're right; dselect is not easy to use. In case you don't understand it, you can't use dselect to install software unless it's pointed to a repository of that software. Accordingly, you need to use the Access option to tell dselect how to access that software. When you choose to install from a hardrive (not yet mounted), I believe you'll be given the option to mount the hard drive so it can be read by the system. Then that drive has become an already-mounted file system. Unless you've downloaded .deb files (maybe from a Windows partition, etc) to your local harddrive, these two options probably don't apply to you. However, I see that you can't use a CD or the network, so you're kind of up a tree without a paddle (or whatever the idiom is). Without the appropriate .debs, you can't install X-Windows, etc, just like you can't install Doom or Wordperfect on a Windows machine without the appropriate installation software. You really need to get a CD working and use a Debian CD, or better yet, get your network access up. Maybe someone more knowledgeable on the list can help you with that. -- Kent West [EMAIL PROTECTED] KC5ENO - Amateur Radio: When all else fails. Linux - Finally! A real OS for the Intel PC!
