Sony Vaio All-In-Wonder FX series working in Debian?

2001-07-09 Thread Bart Szyszka
Hi.

I was just wondering if anyone has gotten one of the Sony notebooks at:
http://www.sonystyle.com/vaio/fx/

working in Debian. They're the Sony Vaio All-In-Wonder FX series. I'd
like to get one of these, but am concerned that it's not listed at the
Linux On Laptops site at:
http://www.linux-laptop.net/sony.html

Harddrives not mounting properly

2001-07-07 Thread Bart Szyszka
Hi,

I'm having complete trouble with mounting things and permissions in
general. Here are two lines from my /etc/fstab

/dev/hda5 /wind vfatdefaults,rw,user,auto,exec 0
2
/dev/hda3 /winc vfatdefaults,rw,user,auto,exec 0
2

On my computer I have root of course and then a normal user. If I go to
/wind as a normal user and try to delete a file, it gives me a permission
denied error. If I try creating a file, I get an error too. Given the above
lines,
why am I having these problems?

Re: Monitor not remembering settings

This was also one of my problems and i solved it (or i worked arround it) I
run Windows and XWindow in different resolutions. My monitor can 'remember'
14 different settings at the same time.

Hmm... I'm already running Windows and X under different resolutions.

Windows is run under 1024x768 and X under 1280x1024. I'd appreciate
any more suggestions. If I reboot from Linux to Linux, the monitor's
geometry settings will stick just fine, but if I boot to Windows and
back to Linux, the geometry settings are reset.

I have Debian unstable set up with KDM and KDE2 to dual-boot with a WindowsMe

monitor's settings because the screen is all bent out of shape. Any idea why
it keeps resetting? It never does that when I go back to Windows. Windows

Windows could be resetting your monitor.
(I've noticed that re-installing Windows 98 makes my monitor forget all
my Linux video mode settings. As usual, Microsoft tries to take over
everything.)

Is there a way to stop this from happening? Maybe by adding something in

Linux to make it remember the settings after a Windows reset?

Re: Monitor not remembering settings

2001-06-21 Thread Bart Szyszka

You should be able to run "xvidtune" in order to get the right modeline.
Set your screen as you like then click on "show." This will kick out a
modeline.
Find the modline in your /etc/X11/XF86Config file, in the appropriate
section, that starts with the same desktop size as xvidtune reports.
For example something along the lines of "1024x768." Comment that
line out and paste the new modeline xvidtune created into the file.

Save the file and restart X.

Well it's remembering the resolution setting. The problem is that it's
not remembering the geometry settings like the pincusion, trapezoid,
etc. so the screen is all bent out of shape (in the proper resolution).

Hi,

Is anyone else having trouble getting the Ati All-In-Wonder 128 Pro

Yes, it has worked for a very long time. Only recently has it stopped
working. I did a fresh install of Debian/KDE and then the GNOME
programs, but they don't take on KDE2's colors like they used to.

> What I meant was: I would expect KDE apps not to see my GNOME

Why? It's not like KDE/GNOME have any special permissions that
don't allow each other to read each other's config files. This is
why they're all getting closer to WM/UI standards, so that it's easier
(and better for the consumer) for KDE and GNOME programs to
cooperate together. This is a *good* thing. I *want* GNOME programs
to take on my KDE2 preferences (which is why I have "Apply KDE
fonts and colors to non-KDE programs" enabled) so that I don't have
to try to set everything up twice.

No no no. There's an option in KDE2 under the 'Style' section that says
"Apply fonts and colors to non-KDE apps". This used to apply my KDE2
colors and fonts to GNOME programs.

I wouldn't because GNOME doesn't have an option to apply its color/font
settings to KDE/non-GNOME programs.

GNOME apps not using KDE2 colors

Hi,

I have the latest version of KDE2 from unstable and none of
my GNOME programs are taking on KDE2's colors and fonts
even though I have that option enabled in Kcontrol. Is there
a config file I can edit manually to check for this? It's especially
bugging me since all the fonts in my GNOME programs are
larger than they should be. I have used GNOME programs
from Debian unstable and also just upgraded them to the
programs in Ximian's (Helix's) apt source without any luck.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I had the exact same problem when
I was trying to get unstable working, but now I formatted to potato and potato

I'm having the exact same problem (except I formatted to potato). I just
can't get it to work. startx looks for the file in .usr/X11R6/... and X won't
start with that command, *but* if I run "XFree86" (the command), it does
work. What's confusing me is that normally I need the xserver-svga
package, which has a 3.x version number, so I don't even know what
it's doing with all these XF86Config/XF86Config-4 files although normally
I've never had a problem with any of this.

it did, since it or whatever depended on it also depended on Perl
5.6) didn't help. I ended up formatting and installing potato instead.
I'd be nice if there was some way of finding out whether or not
it's safe to upgrade to testing/unstable.

KDE2 in Debian testing/unstable not working?

2001-01-25 Thread Bart Szyszka
Hi,

What's the status of KDE2 in testing and unstable? I tried
doing an apt-cache search for 'task-kde' in testing and got
nothing, but under unstable all I got was task-kde and
task-kde-devel. When I did a dist-upgrade from testing to
unstable, some X-related packages had unmet dependencies
and doing an apt-get install for task-kde just gave me a
long list of packages it wouldn't download. Is there currently
a way for me to be able to get a decent testing/unstable
system working with KDE2? What's going on with testing/
unstable anyway? It's been several days since I've been able
to do anything with apt (mostly dist-upgrades) without getting
some dependency problems or just broken packages.

Do you have a boot disk for your Debian system? If not, figure out

I've tried tons of these options and when I use them I'd feel like I'd be
using more of a workaround than just getting my e-mail. I love Kmail. It's so
useful with a decent interface (KDE). If I didn't have Kmail, then I'd just

For future reference, where's the message log? I removed Kmail with dpkg
--purge and deleted all the related configuration files, reinstalled Kmail,
reconfigured it, and not it works like a charm. Back to Linux it is. I'm home
for two weeks so I really can't bother with these types of inconveniences. If
I were on my regular computer, I'd definitly be trying hard to get Kmail

Non-KDE2 programs aren't taking on color scheme

applied to other programs. This is how my computer currently looks:

, but when I run GImp, for example, it is showing up as light gray with large
fonts. Before, it was blue like everything else is in KDE 2.1 and the fonts
were the same size as the fonts I have in native KDE programs. Then I decided
to install GAIM because I wanted to see its icons (I'm making new icons for
Konverse and someone said Konverse's current icons look like GAIM's) and ever
since I installed it, GNOME programs aren't taking on KDE2's colors. Any
ideas what might have gone wrong?

Configuring PS/2 mouse in XF86Config-4

2001-01-01 Thread Bart Szyszka
Hello,

I'm having trouble getting my PS/2 two-button mouse to work
under XF86 4.0.2 (or whatever is the latest in Debian unstable). I'd
appreciate it if people could send me some examples of how they
have theirs setup. Mine jumps to the upper-right corner during KDE2's
startup and then it freezes a few seconds later. When it does work
for a few seconds afterwords, the right mouse button doesn't work.
Did anyone use the "Buttons" option? What about some options for
mapping the first/second buttons properly? I have "/dev/psaux" as
my Device. Would it make a difference if I set that up with /dev/mouse
(if so, how do I do that? ls command?)? I've never had problems with
mice in Linux before, but I've also never setup a PS/2 mouse (or anything
else PS/2-related... my own computer doesn't have a PS/2 port).

Mouse freezes in KDE 2.1 under unstable

2000-12-31 Thread Bart Szyszka
Hello,

I've finally gotten my X server working on this computer with an Ati Rage
128 All-InWonder Pro graphics card, but am having trouble with the mouse.
It's a generic two-button mouse hooked up to the PS/2 port. When I get
into KDE 2.1 under Debian unstable, the mouse jumps around to a few
places while Ksplash is loading things and I'm able to use it for a few
seconds, but then it freezes. If I open some programs by using my keyboard
and I close them, then sometimes the mouse will work again, but then it'll
freeze again. When it's working and I move it over some things, sometimes
it's as if it puts focus on something without me clicking on any buttons.
I'd
appreciate any help with this. I've uploaded a copy of my XF86Config-4 file
to:
http://www.gigabee.com/linuxextras/xf86config-4.txt

I have the latest stuff from Debian unstable. Is there anything I need to
add or
delete from this file? Any other files or programs that I should be looking
at?
It took me a while to get this X server up and running and I'm not even sure
what finally did it so I'm afraid of running anymore X configuraiton
programs
that could mess things up.

Happy New Year everyone!

I'm trying to setup my X server on a different computer and am having
trouble getting it to work. I have an Ati All-In-Wonder 128 Pro
graphics card with 32MB and have gotten the latest XFree86 stuff
from the unstable branch, but it just won't work. All the X11 messages
that I get when it doesn't work just say something to the effect that I
didn't select the right graphics card. There are several that seem to
be able to fit both on the SVGA server and Mach64. In Windows
when I view info on the card, it says some things about it being
Ati Rage 128 Pro so I tried the 'Ati Rage 128 (generic)' option and
that didn't work. I've also tried 'Ati All-In-Wonder' and 'Ati
All-In-Wonder Pro' without any success.

I'd appreciate some help with this. Is the problem on my end or the
packages in the unstbale branch? I want to setup KDE 2.1 since
I'm at home on vacation from my university and my dad has an
800mhz computer. : )

Install Debian 2.2 from one floppy and one harddrive folder

2000-12-21 Thread Bart Szyszka
Hi,

I'm having trouble figuring out how to install Debian 2.2 with just a Rescue
disk and with the rest of the files needed
for a base system to be put in one folder on a DOS partition. This is how I've
always installed Debian slink, but would
like to start out with Debian potato on a different computer. I'm reading
through the install guide at debian.org, but
all I'm finding is multi-floppy installations or installations that make you
retain a multi-folder directory structure.
I'd appreciate some help with this. I tried getting most of the folder that has
'images-1.44' in it and I tried making
a Rescue fisk from the rescue.bin in images-1.44, but when I try the disk and
have it boot the installation, it asks
me for a Root disk afterwords. I just want a single floppy to kickstart the
install and have it grab everything else
from my harddrive. Is that possible with Debian potato? Or what about woody?

(please CC: me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] since I'm subbed to the digest... I'm
visiting home for three weeks from college and
need to use web-based e-mail)

Type:
apt-cache search ftpd

And that'll give you the names of all the packages and descriptions that
have the 'ftpd' in them. Then run:
apt-get install PACKAGE_NAME

And Debian will start downloading and installing that package and any
other packages it might depend on.

The 'alien' program has worked pretty well for me although lately it just
hasn't come in handy that much since people have been doing a good
job of making DEBs (especially the Helix GNOME people).

Licq from KDE2?

2000-06-10 Thread Bart Szyszka
Hello,

Has anyone had luck getting the latest Licq to work with the latest KDE2
version from kde.tdyc.com ? When I try installing licq-plugin-qt2 it wants to
remove all the KDE2 packages, including libqt2.1 (and do libqt2 instead).
That licq-plugin-qt2 isn't actually a dependency, from the looks of things,
of Licq, but when I run Licq without it, I get:
23:41:39: [ERR] Unable to load plugin (qt-gui): /usr/lib/licq/licq_qt-gui.so:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.

You might want to try the linux.debian.user newsgroup from your
ISP's national newsgroup server. There's a couple others and they
all let you view posts from there. I'm not sure how far back they go,
but your newsgroup reader should have the option to download the
messages for offline viewing.

Re: Best hardware?

2000-05-28 Thread Bart Szyszka

Not from my experiences. Printers generally work well. Monitors generally
work well. Mice/keyboards generally work well. Now I need to know how they
work on the Linux end. I love trackballs and Logitech's Trackman Marble FX
is just perfect for me, but unfortunately there isn't much support for it on
Linux
besides left/right click and using one of the two extra buttons as a "third"
button.
It wouldn't make sense for me to buy that trackball specifically for a Linux
desktop when I can't even have the benefits of its four buttons. That's why it'd
be nice to see a site with a general overview of this type of stuff so I know
what
my options are in terms of multi-button trackballs with configurable extra
buttons
along with the same type of thing for printers, scanners, etc.

> I've never been very impressed with those types of sites and certainly

I wouldn't use them as a definite source, but they're certainly a great starting
point. Another good thing is www.epinions.com . I wouldn't mind seeing a
central place where I could turn to to look up hardware on Linux. Right now
there's a scatter of sites and howtos and manuals.

> latest Abit motherboard (for example) than any reviewer Cnet has to offer.
I'm sure someone reviewing Linux hardware would be much less superficial
than people like CNet's reviewers who do Windows hardware.

Well see, that's what I mean. There's hardware that is great on Windows, but
there just aren't any drivers for it in Linux. Or sometimes the second best
hardware for Windows ends up being the best option for Linux simply because
the drivers are more complete. I'm looking for a site that specifically seeks
out the best hardware for Linux just like CNet's Computers.com attempts to
seek out the best hardware for Windows. I'd rather not have to sign up to a
mailing list for each type of hardware just to find out what my best buying
options are. Of course it's very possible that I'm just dreaming and such a
site doesn't exist yet.

Closing Kasbar in KDE2

2000-05-27 Thread Bart Szyszka
Hi,

I'm having problems in the latest KDE2 from kde.tdyc.com and it's
all centered around me not being able to close/kill the Kasbar
applet. Any ideas how I can get rid of it?

When it's running there's a big empty gap on my panel. If I try to
move one of the applets that are on the panel to that gap, it
freezes and I can't use my mouse (I get a crosshair cursor
and can move it, but clicking or dragging doesn't work). What I need
to do to get out is Alt+Ctrl+F1 out of there and kill ksmserver to
crash KDE2 and have it go back to gdm so I can log back in.

I don't like Kasbar. It's evil. I'd appreciate getting help with
removing it. : ) Thanks.

I don't use any "shipping" version of Linux. Prefer getting a base

Or if you get the source, bunzip2 it and the tar -xvf it.

I don't think it's really supposed to be 'linux'. Just a folder that the kernel

Well no, of course not. KDE2 is just on its first beta. I was
more concerned about whatever Debian version we'll be on
when KDE2 will be out. Have the licensing issues been
resolved? Again, I keep hearing two different answers without
any URLs I could look to for proof.

Right. I know about the KLPP portion that deals with Debian.
The "officialness" (i.e. a final OK from the Debian project for
KDE2) and the mirroring (the entire Debian distributions obviously
has more mirrors than KLPP does) are more important to me.

Right, but what we're not talking about compiling one specific program in
general. We're talking about compiling programs. One FAQ I saw actually
only said something to the effect of "get gcc" for "What do I need to
compile programs"? That's horrendously absurd! gcc is not the only thing
you need to "compile programs".

Well Linux people tend to make too many assumptions about what the
user has on their system. I'd imagine it to be more likely with developers
who assume people are installing packaged versions that automatically
installs a basic set of development packages.

OK, but what about the software that isn't put up on Debian's site?

I meant *most* programs. Just like the boxed sets of Linux will install
the packages you need for compiling most programs.

Can we *please* get a serious answer to this question? I've tried to find it
numerous times without any luck and it's ridiculous. The beauty of Debian
is that you can install a clean, unbloated system that's easy to maintain.
However, one thing that's always been keeping me down is compiling programs.
Packaged versions easily set up all the packages you need for that, but if
you're installing a base system, then how are you supposed to get it to
compile programs properly? How about a list of *all* the packages that are
installed when you enable the C development/compiling environment (or whatever
it's called) in a packaged (i.e. store bought bundle) version of Debian or any
other flavor of Linux? And please don't give me ridiculous answers like
"download
the packages the app requires". I'm talking about having all the packages needed
so that it'll be a sure bet that most, if not all, of the times that I try to
compile a
program (*any* program), it'll work. Don't people on this list compile
programs?!?
Geesh!

Mustek 1200 LS scanner working in Debian?

2000-02-21 Thread Bart Szyszka
Hello,

I've needed to upgrade Win98 to Win2000 Pro yesterday, but a side
effect of that is that my Mustek scanner won't work. Apparently
Mustek has refused to develop drivers for Windows 2000 because
they sell to home users and Windows 2000 is a business OS. My
only hope right now is that I can get this scanner working in Debian
Linux (which Windows2000 has thankfully not ruined), but I'm having
trouble finding good info on scanners and Linux. Isn't there a database
like the one for printers which tries to get nearly all of them listed and
offers info on their current support in Linux (perfect, partial, beta,
paperweight, etc...)? I haven't been able to find any info on my Mustek
12000 LS scanner's support in Linux. I might try the mustek driver
for sane if I can figure out how to setup sane-gimp1.1 (it doesn't have
a manpage).

Hello,

A couple KDE-based programs that I tried converting from RPM to
DEB recently have been installing themselves in something like
/opt/kde/bin or /opt/kde2/bin (this was yesterday when I tried setting
up kdealpha). Is there a way to do the conversion for alien so that
the DEBs install the programs into the right directories? Like instead
of /opt/kde2/bin they should put the stuff in /usr/bin and likewise for
/opt/kde2/lib , /opt/kde2/include , etc. What I'm thinking that I should
try is to backup those directories in /usr and then copy the files from
the /opt/kde2 folders into the /usr equivalents, but I think that the backup
will probably come in handy.

I'm very impressed with the 'alien' package (apt-get install alien). A couple
people who suggested that I try it told me that it isn't entirely reliable, but
so far I've only had two or three RPMs that didn't convert perfectly and two
of those I was able to get working anyway (they just installed the programs
in a different folder than the bin one so all I had to do was move it to
/usr/bin
or something like that). One program not working out of a buttload is nothing.
Alien is very good.

You mean you want to adjust the setting in KDE Control Center for the

out to do it.

It sounds like you want nothing from KDE, then, except to possibly be able
to run KDE programs? What happens when you try to run them?

A couple people have suggested that, but isn't it just easier to

It is pronounced as Leenus in his native country (in many European
languages, i's have ee sounds almost exclusively). The Peanuts
character, Linus, is pronounced 'Line-us', though, so that's probably
why I say "Line-ux". I'm pretty sure I read something by Linus where
he mentioned the fact that name pronunciations do get translated
over in other languages and he was perfectly fine with it. And as has
been mentioned here before, it was originally Line-ux and only became
Lynn-us because of the press.

Personally I don't find this conversation annoying at all as long as
people don't insist on a pronunciation when even the ones who grew
up in the same city can't agree on how to say 'bagel'. : )

libc6 broken?

2000-02-08 Thread Bart Szyszka
Hello,

I tried doing an apt-get dist-upgrade at 8/9pm-ish today and am getting
some problems. libc6 won't go through the configuration and it sits
there when I try apt-getting something else. I tried doing apt-get
autoclean and then apt-get clean and dpkg --clean-avail and all
kinds of stuff, but no matter what I do, why does it keep trying to
configure libc6 and install the other stuff that didn't install because of it?
I want it to stop doing it so I can install something else that doesn't even
need libc6. I've had this problem before where a package just sits
there and gets in the way when I try to install something completely
unrelated.

Fonts too big after getting xfs-xtt to work

2000-02-07 Thread Bart Szyszka
Hello,

I got xfs-xtt working (thanks!), but I'm having some related problems. Now in
some programs, the fonts are too big and I can't change them. My Kpanel's
taskbar and menu text fontsize is too big. Changing it to some huge size or
some small size or even a completely different font does nothing. It stays
at what looks like a 14px Arial/Helvetica no matter what. Any ideas?

I really have no idea what I'm doing so I'd appreciate it if you guys would
be more specific. What's "similar" What should I do same as xfs? Like I said,
I installed xfs-xtt. I don't have xfs (it asks me to remove xfs-xtt if I try to
install xfs). Don't I need to do something like this:
xset +fp /usr/local/share/fonts/truetype

When I do I get this:
xset: bad font path element (#38), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax

Getting xfs-xtt to work

2000-02-06 Thread Bart Szyszka
Hello,

Someone here suggested getting xfs-xtt to add True Type font support
to Linux. I did that and am getting trouble setting it up. Here are the
steps I've followed so far after installing xfs-xtt and also fttools:
mkdir /usr/local/share/fonts/truetype
cp /mnt/c/windows/fonts/*.ttf /usr/local/share/fonts/truetype
cd /usr/local/share/fonts/truetype
mkfttdir
nano /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fs/config
  (added a pointer to /usr/local/share/fonts/truetype)

That's where I am right now. What do I do after (or before?)? Isn't there
some xset command I need to run? Do I need to kill the x-server stuff
(and if I do, mind telling me how?). Please be specific. Thanks!

Pronounciation of Linux that important?

2000-02-04 Thread Bart Szyszka
Hi,

I just read this article and thought the beginning was rather harsh:
http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,34079,00.html

Is the pronunciation of the word 'Linux' that much of an issue? So
what if we don't pronounce it like Linus pronounces it? Words are
adapted differently in each language. In some, 'Debian' might be
Debby-In while in others it might be Debby-On and in others the
Debby might be replaced with the 'Debi' in Debit. I don't see anything
wrong with people adapting words like that to their languages and it
seems rather petty of people to bicker about that. Some people
pronounce GIF with a soft G and others with a hard one. Why is
this bothering people?

Should I report this somewhere? It's starting to be a while since I've
first had this problem and it doesn't seem to be fixed with other mirrors
(I've made sure to pick one that definitely has the packages I want). Usually
these types of problems are fixed rather quickly. Much quicker than this
one.

I've tried http://ftp.tux.org/pub/distributions/debian/ with potato and the
task-gnome-apps package is definitely at:
http://ftp.tux.org/pub/distributions/debian/dists/potato/main/binary-i386/x11/

So what's the problem? Is there something I can do on my end? Here's
the whole line that I'm using:
deb http://ftp.tux.org/pub/distributions/debian/ potato main contrib non-free

Time problems AGAIN!

2000-01-22 Thread Bart Szyszka
Hi,

I think this is a glitch with Debian slink or something because this is
completely insane. While installing Debian, it asks you about your
hardware clock being set to GMT or local. The question asks if it's
OK to set the clock to GMT. The last time I did this I picked 'No' for
absolutely sure and the time between Windows and Debian was
just right (when I had selected Yes previous times they became 5
hours apart). Now I used the same Rescue disk and installed the
same stuff off my harddrive, had picked 'No' for that question *for sure*
and my time in Windows was offset by 5 hours AGAIN! This is
completely insane! I am about to shoot myself because this time stuff
between Debian and Windows and the hardware clock is incredibly
annoying. I had finally got it to work last time I reinstalled Debian,
*made sure* I followed the same steps, and here we go again! Please
tell me there is some very simple thing I can do (and it *better* be
simple) to do the equivalent of selecting 'No' for that question. *Please*
or else I might just have to pull that trigger. This is very very very
frustrating.

Thanks. : )

This is what I do for X11:
apt-get install xf86setup xfonts-100dpi xfonts-75dpi xfonts-base
xfonts-scalable xfree86-common xfstt
xserver-common xserver-svga;

For enlightenment:
apt-get install enlightenment enlightenment-data

You can add enlightenment-theme-bluesteel enlightenment-theme-brushedmetal
enlightenment-theme-shinymetal

For Gnome, go to:
http://www.debian.org/Packages/unstable/allpackages.html

Search for gnome-admin on that page and then see which one of the gnome-*
packages you want and do an apt-get install; for them.
