webcam hardware?
I'm going to get a webcam device I would like to know what alternatives I have. I see devices with the bt848 chipset is supported but I'd like to know which those are (manifacturer, model, etc). I'd like to use it mainly as a webcam but also play some with mbone apps/videophone etc. If you have experience with any cam hardware please send me a mail with enough details so I can get the right one. :) Do I have to mention - it shouldn't cost a fortune. I was looking for the 3com BigPicture Video. It shouldn't be more expencive than that. Unfortunately the 3com BP device is not sold in Sweden.. Thanks! Ben -- http://surf.to/anTiX
SB PCI128 problem
I'm trying to get my sound card to work.. Here is some info from dmesg.. [...] pty: 256 Unix98 ptys configured Sound initialization started Sound initialization complete PIIX3: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 39 [...] If it was found shouldn't it say something there? /proc/pci says: [...] Bus 0, device 11, function 0: Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq AudioPCI (rev 1). Slow devsel. IRQ 10. Master Capable. Latency=32. Min Gnt=12.Max Lat=128. I/O at 0x6000 [0x6001]. Ensoniq?? But the IRQ is correct. I read in the Sound-HOWTO and in the kernel docs and in the later it said that all should have the device files there but I don't have /dev/sndstat on my newly installed debian-unstable. In the kernel (2.2.0-pre8) config I have selected 100% Sound Blaster, I/O base=220, IRQ=10, DMA=1, 16-bit DMA=5, MPU401 IO base=330 Any hints on how to get the card to work?? //ben -- http://surf.to/anTiX

What should I do? I doesn't work even if I do it manually with dpkg. //ben -- http://surf.to/anTiX
X11 hangs
Hi! I've been trying to install X11 almost a whole day and it won't work. I have a STB PCI card with the chip Promotion 6422 and Horizon 64V BIOS. I've tried both the STB Horizon Video (type349) and Allience Promotion 6422 (type54). Sometimes I get it to work for a few seconds before it hangs, especially in low resolutions. It usually hangs right away with the grey pattern.. sometimes the screen is wrapped and only displayd in the left half. I've tried using both xf86confing and XF86Setup, the later always displays a weird resolution in which it is impossible to read text in after doing the setup of card, monitor etc. My monitor is a Hansol 17PX. The mouse is a 3button Logitech (I use the Logitech Mouseman, type6 in xf86config). I've had the video card work in another computer before and nt works on this computer too. I'm going to get a ps/2 mouse as soon as I get the contact for the motherboard, maybe this will help? I used a ps/2 in the other computer where it did work.. Thanks for any help!! //ben -- http://surf.to/anTiX

DNS-DHCP solution for linux?
Is there any such? It would be nice not having to update the DNS server by hand all the time. And using DHCP to assign IP:s automatically could solve this if there was a tool for updating the DNS server. //ben -- http://surf.to/anTiX
remove mail periodically?
I have around 10.000 mails in this folder now and it takes a while to open it so I'm wondering if there is some tool I can use to remove the old mails? Maybe periodically in a cron job? I'm using mutt with the Maildir format.. Thanks for any help!! //ben -- http://surf.to/anTiX
Re: DNS-DHCP solution for linux?
I'm not quite sure what you mean. For me, dhcpcd does assign a DNS server via the /etc/dhcp/resolv.conf which it generates. However, it does not By a quick look at your script it looks like you're fixing your own /etc/hosts file. I'm talking about updating the dns server (BIND) for two c-nets. //ben -- http://surf.to/anTiX
problems+suggestions
I'll take the suggestion first :) Wouldn't it be nice if a configuration of all installed packages could be saved in some data file that you could put on a disk and whenever you want to install a new machine or go back to this good configuration you just load the data-file into dselect or whatever program that gets/installs packages. Some different default configs could also be shipped with the dist to be used by new debian people. Maybe this is already possible? Tell me please! Maybe some history function in dselect would be useful to have so it would be possible to go back to a working config. And well, wouldn't it be possible to have a HUGE warning if trying to remove things that dselect (or whatever package program running) depends on? (read on to understand why I think so:) Ok, for the problems... I wanted to remove the gnome packages and somehow some other things slipped away as well. When trying to start dselect now it says dselect: error in loading shared libraries /usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.0-1.so.2: undefined symbol __register__frame__info What deb(s) do I have to do to fix it? Another things is that I can't get rid of the xfstt because of an error in the startup script... As if that wasn't enough, I can't start X anymore after upgrading the hardware. I swapped motherboard+mem+kbd+mouse(from ps/2 to serial). It just hangs on a black screen or the gray grid like screen at X startup.. IN SHORT: I'm about to re-install.. Now when I'm going to re-install it would've been nice to have a good config to go back to and not having to go through the package selection procedure again... //ben -- http://surf.to/anTiX
X11 hangs after moving mouse
After starting X11 the computer hangs (stone-dead) after a few seconds. Sometimes it just hangs right away.. I think it may have something to do with the mouse but I'm not sure. Today I changed some hardware in my computer (motherboard, ram, mouse). I used to have a ps/2 mouse but now I have a serial mouse instead. It's a logitech 3-button mouse. Thanks for any help!! //ben -- http://surf.to/anTiX
Re: Problem with X...Windowmaker...locale?
Ok, lets see. I assume you've installed 3.3.2.3a-7, haven't you? Either update to 3.3.2.3a-8 or reinstall xbase. According to debian-user this fixes the local problem. Have you installed those new packages: xmodmap, xfonts-*, xterm? Is there some problem with apt/dselect as well because nothing happened when I did Update in dselect. I had to get it and install it manually.. //ben -- http://surf.to/anTiX

users starting with digits?
I can't seem to create users starting with digits with debian2.0. Is there a reason I shouldn't? If I want to do it anyway, can I just change an existing users login name by editing the files group, gshadow, passwd and shadow? //Ben -- http://surf.to/anTiX
