Emulate middle click with different buttons
This is isn't specifically related to Debian, but I recently have acquired an ergonomic 3m mouse. Unfortunately, this thing only has three mouse buttons, none of them being wheels. So, I went ahead and and set up the middle mouse button as an emulated scroll wheel like I have on my Thinkpad. However, now I am without a middle click and missing it quite a bit. And, I cannot use the Emulate Middle Mouse button (like I'm doing on my Thinkpad) because the right and left clicks on this mouse are physically mutually exclusive! http://www.3m.com/us/office/myworkspace/images/art/prod_med_ergo_mouse.jpg And, I can't do shift-inserts because my keyboard doesn't have a good Insert button :(. So, anyways, does anyone know of another solution? Like maybe I could emulate a middle mouse click with the middle button and the right click button? Or maybe something fancy with xmodmap with a given click plus a modifier? I am using Debian stable, so I'm still running normal xfree86, if it makes a difference. Please CC me on your response as I am not on this list. Thanks in advance for your help! Brandt Dusthimer -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? gtop
There is a gtop package in stable, but no package in testing or unstable. Is there a reason why? Is it in another package? Re: XFree 4.2 on potato
Sorry, there's no 4.2 right now. Branden hasn't even put it into unstable yet cuz it would mess up woody's stabilization process. If I were you I'd wait for woody to official come out (hopefully soon) and then see if XFree 4.1 works. Netatalk question
Greetings. I am a fairly experienced Debian user (for those of you who wish to get technical) with a question relating to Netatalk. I maintain a low security mac lab and it, for the most part, has been working fine as a file server for me. However, I have run into one large hitch; I, for some reason, am unable to have the Macs open the server at startup. It is a guest accessable shared (like I said, low security,) the computers are running OS 8.6, and the box is checked so that the shares should mount. I have no problem mounting other macintosh shares at start up and -savepassword is enabled. Thanks, Brandt Dusthimer (Please CC me as I am not on this list) __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Screwed with HDparm a little bit too much
Ok everyone. A response to this would definitely be appreciated. I was messing with the different HD Parm settings one day to see if I could get better thouroughput. I started to run a Bonnie++ test to see if my tweaking was doing any good. It stopped in the middle of the test and gave me a kernel panic (not good). I managed to reboot my box in a semi-proper way and it wouldn't boot. I think I fried my partition cuz I can't mount it with boot disks and e2fsck and fsck don't work on it on my new Slack Partition. Any advise on how to fix this would definitely be appreciated. By the way, when I first installed it I didn't care too much about my partition table setup I just wanted it to work. So the partition that's messed up is my root partition which contains everything. If I can fix this well, I can guaranttee that that won't happen again. Brandt Dusthimer
Re: nvidia + GL = X crash
Problems with an NVidia card and you didn't tell me? First of all, have you looked through the previous posts on this forum for any answers? Have you tryed them all? Second, it really, really, really sounds to me like you didn't specify which module to use. As root run 'lsmod' and make sure that the "NVdriver" module is loaded. Next, open up your config file. It's probably /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. Make sure that its not loading the "nv" driver and is instead loading the "nvidia" driver. I believe that normal mesa doesn't work with the "nvidia" driver and causes it to crash when ever you try to startx(or whatever you do.) Using the "nv" driver it(mesa) works just fine and dandy. Mesa working (from what I understand) is not a good thing with the "nvidia" driver. Heck, mesa shouldn't even be on your machine (unless you can define all the time which GL driver to use.) If the above fails, check out my giant list of install/debug instructions to a guy with the alias of "dude." It should be in the news letter archive (its pretty recent so you shouldn't have to look too hard.) Adaptec 2940U2W
I have a selection to make and, unfortunately, I have to make it fairly quickly. There are two different Adaptec 2940U2Ws that I can get. One of them is standard whereas the other one is OEM and has a 50 pin external connector compared to the normal 68pin. I would really like to connect it to some 50pin external device, but I'm not sure wether the card with the 50pin would work under linux? Could I just use a 68pin to 50pin adapter for the external devices? Brandt Dusthimer
Video Card Setup
If none of you know already, I'm the server at my LAN parties. However I've come to a point where I don't know what to do. Opinions and/or advice would be appreciated. Here's what all (PCI cardwise) I want in my box (the numbers correspond to the PCI slot; 0 is AGP): 0. Nvidia Card 1. Voodoo Card with TV output 2. U2 SCSI (Adaptec one; I think 2930U2 or 2940U2) 3. 3ware ATA RAID 6200 (RAID 0 with 2 Maxtor 60 gigs) 4. Intel Dual Port LAN card 5. Personal LAN card (so my quake game won't be bogged down by uploads/downloads) 6. Sound Blaster Live! I've got a bit of a problem tho. I have yet to find a card with Glide 2.0/3.0 support thats PCI and has TV out. I would buy a seperate DVD decoder (since they're pretty cheap), but I have no PCI slots to spare. Quick Comment: Yes, I do know about IRQ stuff and how AGP/Slot 1 share the same IRQ and all that other good stuff. So please, don't tell me I'm going to whack up my IRQs. On with my babble. So what do you say? I want to be able to play DVDs to the TV along with desktop environment (did I mention Glide support?) At the same time, I want people to be uploading to me without any bog down and me being able to Quake 3 on my NVidia card all at the same time. (Yeah for linux's multitasking (And lots of CPU power and RAM.)) I want to make sure to impress them with my OS (and my box of course.) Brandt Dusthimer

Re: NVIDIA Re: help (fwd)
No problem with all this. I spend many months with many different video cards trying to get quake 3 to work. I really, really, really wan't to prevent anyone from having to suffer through the same stuff that I did. Now, on to your questions. First of all, are you using your own custom kernel right now? I figure that you aren't because compiling the NVidia driver returns "No modversions.h". Really, all you have to do is run a "make" in the kernel source directory and it will create the file modversions.h (or whatever it was.) However, I really suggest that you learn how to make your own custom kernel. Its fun and you learn a whole lot. However, I'm really not an expert on the kernel, so I wouldn't be the one to ask about all that stuff. Once you "make" in the kernel directory, you should be able to compile the NVidia Driver (all though it will be for the kernel in the /usr/src/linux directory. You might have to rename your kernel source directory from kernel-whatever to linux for this to work. ) As for the depmod utility: depmod maps your module dependancies. You'll probably want to run it after installing/playing with or whatever with modules. Re: XFree86 + NV_GLX
Okay, if you've read any of my older postings, you'll realise that installing the GLX drivers is a snap (if you know what your doing). First, go to NVidia's web and download the GLX and NVidia Drivers. From the main screen, click on products, then drivers, then linux. That should get you to them. After you've downloaded them, put them both into your /usr/src directory. Then tar -xzvf NV(driver name) and then tar -xzvf NV(GLX). Go into the newly made NV(driver name) directory and type "make". "cd .." and then go into the GLX directory. Type "make" again. Okay, here's where things got a little bit tricky for me. First, type "dexter" and setup your config (if the "nvidia" driver isn't listed, just use the "nv" driver for now.) MAKE SURE YOU LOOK AT WHAT DEXTER WRITES THE CONFIG SCRIPT TO!!! I spent who knows how long "debugging" my box's X config file (/etc/X11/XF86Config) only to find out later that dexter had changed it to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. I set it everything right. I was just using the wrong config file. Next, check out your /etc/modules.conf file. Make sure it says something in there about "alias char-major-195 NVdriver" or something like that. If it isn't there then go into the directory /lib/modules/your-kernel-version/video (or do a "locate NVdriver" to tell you where it is other than in the /usr/src/NVdriver directory.) After you get there "mv NVdriver NVdriver.o". Then do a "modconf". Go into video and select the NVdriver module. It should install just fine. After doing that (*gasp* *gasp* *breathe* . . . quick rest ... ok, I'm back) then edit whichever config file dexter wrote to. If you use vi, open in up and type "/". Then type "nv" and press return. It should find you where in the script it sets which driver to use. (The nv should be in parentheses.) Replace "nv" with "nvdriver". Now, if your not already in X, do a "startx". If you are in X, reset it (Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.) Hopefully it should run just fine. If it doesn't ... just tell me, I should be able to help. Play Quake. Have fun? Does it run slow? If it does, you still have some mesa drivers lying around. Do the following commands : rm /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.a rm /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.a rm /usr/lib/libGL.so rm /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so* rm /usr/X11R6/lib/libGLcore.so* Then, go back into /usr/src/NV(GLX) and type make. Reset X and it should work fine. Me is dumb. I figured that DMA would already be in place. . . hehe. GUESS NOT SMART ONE! Uh, you wouldn't happen to be able to provide me with the info how to enable it, perferable in the best performance mode. If it envolves creating a new kernel, no problem. 10/100 LAN card
Curious question for you all. What's the best 10/100 LAN card for Linux. Currently, I'm using a tulip (Netgear something or another). I would like it to have good linux support and have fast transfer rates and be stable and all that good stuff. Perferably nothing over $150. Thanks, Brandt Dusthimer
Converting to SCSI. HELP!!!
Here's a question for all you SCSI lovers and fanatics out there. When my friends and I have LAN parties I usually am: 1, the only linux user so I'm often the butt of other people's jokes (especially when things don't work right . . . :( and 2, I'm also usually the file sharing server. However, when everyone's uploading/downloading to/from me, I experience major system lag and if do anything (even simple command prompt stuff) there upload/download time increases a lot. Once again, this is another their poke-fun-at-the-linux-user jokes. SO, being the all powerful linux user that I am, have decided to start using SCSI. I am under the assumption that SCSI will help. If I am wrong. . . well I don't exactly have money spurting out my ears ( I bag groceries ), please tell me that I'm wrong. SO, here's all of my questions: What kind of hard drive should I get? I'm looking at IBM drives (18.2 gig for the shared drive, 9.1 for the system drive), but they're a little bit on the expensive side. I would like somewhere around 15 MB/s transfer rates (enough for my system and enough for the LAN card's 12.5 MB/s). What kind of SCSI card should I get? I'm looking at an Adaptec 2930U2. You may think I'm crazy for having a 80 MB/s card, but I figure that I, as a server/workstation, won't need to upgrade it soon and I won't mind paying the extra $20. Also, I'm planning on getting a Plextor 12x4x32. Good choice right? Hey, I figure why not. It's the same price as buying an IDE (around where I live) and it's cheaper than an 18.2 IBM hard drive. Thanks, Brandt Dusthimer
Re: Quake 3 ran, I upgraded. . . Well, It doesn't run any more
Well, like I said, there aren't any other GL stuffs ( other than the NVidia stuffs that is) on my box. I was running Quake 3 fine and dandy (and everything else too) with Woody and the NVidia stuffs before. Then, since for some reason I had to remake the NVidia driver everytime I booted up, I decided to upgrade to the most recent version of Woody. Ouch. . . it kind of broke my box. I've fixed a lot of the stuff, but there are still some things that aren't quite working yet. For example, Quake 3. Also, right now only root can use the Emu10k1 (sound) driver. Can't play any sounds with any other user. For further information, I cannot start X with the NVdriver driver. I checked the log and the only error I could find was that it could not load GLcore. I did install (and re-installed) the drivers and X still won't load. Any help with any of the above problems would be appreciated. Re: Quake 3 ran, I upgraded. . . Well, It doesn't run any more
Okay. I decided to upgrade to the most recent version of woody. Good Idea? Of course. Everything works . . . except Quake 3 (deja vu!). I've got this down to an art now. EQL with Broadband
Is it possible to do EQL with broadband? Brandt Dusthimer
Quake makes my mouse and screen mess up
If I play Quake for long enough, 10 - 15 minutes, my screen starts to flicker on and off. (turning of VGA power off in my BIOS allowed me to play for another 5 minutes before it started to flicker) Also, my mouse only responds to the up/down axis. I get absolutely nothing from moving my mouse left and right. Does anyone know what might be causing this? Thanks in advance, Brandt Dusthimer
Re: XFree 4.0.1 and Quake
I'm having problems with XFree 4.0.1, NVidia drivers (I have a TNT2 Elsa Erazor III, not available in the XF86Config), and Quake III. Quake 3 runs fine until I try to start a game. It load game media and all that other stuff, but as soon as I go into the real game it dumps me with a GLX error. I compiled the garbage myself and had to do a little editing (comment out the modversions.h because it isn't in kernel 2.2.17), and after I did that it ran everything fine. In fact, everything seems to run fine except for quake III ( and a little bit of X with the window managers and the screensavers not working.) Anyone know anything about this or had something like it happen to them? Brandt Dusthimer
Quake 3 still not running
It's me again still complaining about Quake 3. Re: more problems with X
For the upper 25% of the screen: You have some type of Virtual Windows setup. You can get rid of it if you edit the XF86Config. For the number pad: do you have Num Lock on? For the Xstart up: if your configuration allows it, you can press Ctrl-Alt-Bksp to dump yourself into bash or whatever you use. If that boots you back into X, I think there's a shell option like 'killx' or something like that (???). Otherwise, you can go into the shell (while in X) and do an 'xf86config' if you want. Then all you have to do is either restart X or reboot. Brandt Dusthimer > Greetings ! > > After help from a lot of folks on this list, I have a good news-bad news > situation. Best SCSI card for Plextor Drive
What's the best SCSI card for a Plextor 12x4x32? I might add a hard drive later and am going to add a Plextor 40x. Brandt
Re: XFree 4.0.1 and Quake
I originally had to comment them out because I hadn't compiled a kernel (and therefore modversions.h wasn't there). Now that I learned from that stupid mistake I deleted everything and tried again without editing anything. Do I still get the dump? Yup. I'm beginning to think it is my video card. ??? It's not supported under the XF86Config. ??? What do you think? Re: new system to buy
Spend the extra $20 and get an ABIT KT7-RAID motherboard and a Thunderbird CPU. Also, look into a better video card. ATI doesn't support the Linux cause at all. You can pick up a TNT2 for $50 and with XFree 4.0.1 you can use NVidia's open source drivers. Plus, the TNT2s are ten times better than any ATI card (with the exception, in Windoze only, of their new Radeon.) As for sound, get a cheap-o Sound Blaster card. (The KT7-RAID doesn't come with on board sound.) Or if you want to spend $50, (and deal with Creative Labs *** (last part censored for obvious reasons) Linux support) get a Sound Blaster Live. Yup. Did all of that. Do you think that editing the Makefile code so thatit would not load moduleversions.h had anything to do with this?
