debian/sid: yubi key USB error: Access denied (insufficient permissions)

2015-11-15 Thread Bruno Voigt
Hi,

I'm using debian/sid.
Where do I configure the USB permissions
so that I can run commands as a regular user:

$ ykinfo -s
USB error: Access denied (insufficient permissions)

$ ykpamcfg -v -2
USB error: Access denied (insufficient permissions)

ykinfo run as root works as expected ..

Thanks in advance for any hints.

Brother QL-1060N label printer: unwanted media feed after print job

2013-10-08 Thread Bruno Voigt
Hi,

is there any body out there using the Brother QL label printer series
under debian/wheezy?

I'm printing labels via CUPS lp command and postscript files
to an QL-1060N with 62mm width continuous roll.

I'm facing the problem that after the print job is finished
and the label is cut as expected,
that the printer driver after a short pause seems to submit an media feed
so that 1 inch (2,54cm) of blank media is advanced
and is sticking in front of the next printed label.

I can only circumvent this by manually pressing
the cut button on the printer before submitting the next print label job.

I have taken a look on the source of the printer driver

printer-driver-ptouch 1.3-4

but was not yet able to find the code that must be changed
to suppress the media advance.

Same result with v1.3-7 from testing/unstable.

I also tried the driver from brother, which does not advance the media
*afte*r the job,
but unfortunately prints 1,5 inch blank media *before* the actual label
data..

Any hints are greatly appreciated..

Unstable KDE: How to turn off this annoying desktop auto dimming

2011-07-07 Thread Bruno Voigt
Hi List,

I'm running Unstable KDE Desktop with the binary NVidia drivers.

The whole desktop brightness is changing in several visible steps
everytime I'm e.g. switching from a desktop with a web-browser
showing a web-site with a dark background
and e.g. another desktop showing an application with a light background.

How is this feature called ?
And how may I turn if off ?

TIA,

squeeze: xen 4.0.1-2 + drbd8-utils: block-drbd script does no longer work?!

2011-01-17 Thread Bruno Voigt
Hi all,

I've upgraded an xen+drbd+lvm debian system to squeeze.
The DomUs utilize DRBD-ressources for storage (based on local LV)
Unfortunately the block-drbd helper script provided by drbd8-utils
doesn't seem to work anymore:

root@xena:~# xm create -c /etc/xen/bldlenny32.cfg
Using config file /etc/xen/bldlenny32.cfg.
root@xena:~# Error: Device 51714 (vbd) could not be connected. Hotplug
scripts not working.

I can start the DomU if a change the domU cfg

from
  disk = [ 'drbd:bldlenny32-disk,xvda2,w', 'drbd:bldlenny32-swap,xvda1,w']
to
  disk = [ 'phy:/dev/drbd/by-res/bldlenny32-disk,xvda2,w',
'phy:/dev/drbd/by-res/bldlenny32-swap,xvda1,w']

and of course then having to manually changing the DRBD ressource states
to primary before start:
   drbdadm primary bldlenny32-disk bldlenny32-swap

The block-drbd helper script works on an older system with debian/lenny
(+ some parts of older sid)

Does anyone have a working configuration using the drbd: naming scheme?

Installed packages:

ii drbd8-utils 2:8.3.7-2.1
ii linux-image-2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 2.6.32-30

ii xen-utils-4.0 4.0.1-2
ii xen-utils-common4.0.0-1

the problem persists ..

Is there a site somehere which explains what components are needed /
how they work together
to provide this functionality ?

on my thinkpad t61p i managed to get the suspend to ram button to work
 by editing /etc/acpi/events/sleepbtn and changing

   event=button[ /]sleep

 to

   event=ibm/hotkey HKEY 0080 1004

i've tried downgrading acpid and acpi-support but i couldn't get
suspend to ram to work without the above change. i don't care too much
about hibernate so i didn't try to make it work.

This has unfortunately no effect here.
acpi_listen shows events for the other key combinations,
but not for Fn+F4, perhaps it is consumed before ?!

Sid+KDE4 seems to be currently in a bad shape,
if I try suspend2ram via the KDE4 Leave-menu or via s2ram -f
it starts blinking the sleep led
and then only terminates the KDE4 session and shows the KDM - login window.

lenny thinkpad x301 suspend keys

2009-04-28 Thread Bruno Voigt
Hi,

I wonder how to configure the thinkpad Fn+F4/F12 suspend 2 ram / disk keys.
I have installed kmilo, powersaved, kpowersave, acpid, uswsusp,
laptop-mode-tools.
I am using KDE 3.5.9.

Currently nothing happens by pressing these keys.

The cmdline utils work, eg. s2ram -f or s2disk, resume to.

How work all these tools together?
How to put some action on these buttons?

BTW: is there a config file for s2ram to have the -f as default ?

The system is not pure lenny but has some stuff from unstable,
and is running a 2.6.29.2 kernel.

TIA,
Bruno

Hi,
I'm running a debian/unstable system

Since an usual aptitude full-upgrade some days ago I have the problem that

instead of maximizing only to the current display
as I enjoyed it before :-)

I'm seeking therefore for some advice
what might have broken / how to restore the old behavior.

Maybe the meaning of some control center settings has changed?
What settings are necessary to have windows maximize only to the active
display of a xinerame configuration?

Thanks in advance for any hints,

Downgrading kdesktop and kdebase-bin to the version in Lenny reportedly
 fixes this.
 See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=518786. The KDE
team does not care about this because KDE 4.2 is /ante portas/ in sid.

have a look at the files /etc/shadow and /sbin/unix_chkpwd. The owner

I'm using a daily updated debian/unstable system with KDE desktop.
Since about 3-4 week I can no longer succesfully unlock the desktop with
my password after auto-lockup (msg: unlock failed..).
So after auto-lockup I have to switch to a text VT and kill the
kdesktop_lock process.

Do I have to adjust some config to make it work again?
Reboot did not help.
There was a new pam version installed, I don't know
if/how it relates to the problem, eg. if some manual
changes have to be done which were not automatically handled..etc..

I've found following message - but cannot figure out what's going wrong:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat .xsession-errors

debian/unstable: linux 2.6.24 + am-utils NFS-automount doesn't work

2008-08-14 Thread Bruno Voigt
Hi all,
I'm running an daily updated unstable system
with also custom built recent kernel.org kernels.

Unfortunately If I try a 2.6.25 or 2.6.26 kernel
the am-utils NFS automount doesn't seem to work any more,
eg. cd /net/myhost.domain/..

Is there something that must be adjusted in either
the am-utils config or the kernel configuration?!

With a kernel revision like 2.6.24.x everything is fine..

TIA,
Bruno

Had you updated pam recently? Did you try to restart X?

I want the kernel.org one not debian ones.
Do you have any knowledge about available patches specific to this
am-utils problem with kernel 2.6.24 ?

Yes. that works.
I am also using KDE, the kde package was in state pn,
so I reinstalled it.
Iceweasel still crashes when run as normal user.

After it has crashed, grep for EACCES in the strace file; that should
tell you which files it cannot access due to permissions problems.

In my normal user trace I see no EACCES.

Well, so much for that idea...

Maybe this is related to arts; I now remember that I had problems with
iceweasel a while back when I tried to get sound from a bluetooth

Try to run it like this:

 ICEWEASEL_DSP=none iceweasel

I use KDE 3.5.9 myself and iceweasel works fine. However, if I set
ICEWEASEL_DSP=artsdsp then I get a segfault, too. The strace output of
that looks similar to yours; it also ends with an lstat of
/usr/lib/iceweasel, followed by a futex and a SIGSEGV.

That works - Great !

Are you using Iceweasel with sound ?
What alternative did you configure?
Where may I change this configuration globally?

Just in /etc/profile specifically for iceweasel
or somewhere (KDE Control Center?) for all apps?

Florian, Thanks a lot for your investigation !

I do not set ICEWEASEL_DSP anywhere, so iceweasel uses the default value

Check it with env | grep ICE.

I would set it both in your shell's profile/rc-file and in
~/.kde/env/env.sh, see man startkde. (The setting in the shell
profile/rc will not work if you start iceweasel from a desktop menu or
by clicking an icon.) Make sure you use export ICEWEASEL_DSP=none.

I just found

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/# cat /etc/iceweasel/iceweaselrc
# which /dev/dsp wrapper to use
ICEWEASEL_DSP=auto

I changed it to none and everything is fine now :-)

Yes, I purged it as advised by the NEWS.
In any case, you can use udevtest to see which rules are applied. Here
is an example for a usb stick at /dev/sdc:

 update_link: found '/block/sdc/sdc1' for
 'disk/by-id/usb-Prolific_Technology_Inc._USB_Mass_Storage_Device-part1'
 update_link:
 'disk/by-id/usb-Prolific_Technology_Inc._USB_Mass_Storage_Device-part1' with
target 'sdc1' has the highest priority 0, create it

Only the first line is shown:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# udevtest /block/uba/uba1 | egrep 'persistent\.rules|by-id'
parse_file: reading '/etc/udev/rules.d/z20_persistent.rules' as rules file

I'm using a selfcompiled kernel 2.6.25.4 (previosuly 2.6.24.4),
are there any special config options needed ?

Here is a excerpt from the syslog after plugging the stick:

sid: USB-stick - /dev/disk/by-id/ not populated

2008-05-22 Thread Bruno Voigt
Hi all,

I have one daily updated sid system running,
which doesn't populate the /dev/disk/by-id/ path
for an connecting USB-stick (w32 FAT)
as it is done by my other sid systems.
(it only shows up as eg /dev/uba1)

I compared the /etc/udev/rules.d/ contents
and they look very similar,
e.g. persistent.rules is identical.

Which rule/file is responsible
for populating the /dev/disk/by-id/ path.

How can I debug what's going on?
I suspect it might be some left over cfg
from older udev-releases or so,
because the system is very old / always being upgraded from sarge/or older.

TIA for any hints,
Bruno

Hi,

I want to start windows from a DRBD - Device,
similar to how I did it succesfully for linux guests.

But the disk definition doesn't work:

disk = [ 'drbd:win-disk,ioemu:hda,w']

The DomU starts but the BIOS says it finds no disk.

The following cfg instead works,
but I have to manually call drbdadm primary win-disk
and I had to patch /usr/lib/xen-3.2-1/lib/python/xen/xend/image.py
to not check that /dev/drbd15 is a regular file...

disk = [ 'file:/dev/drbd15,ioemu:hda,w']

Perhaps the xen-script of the drbd8-utils
has to passthru the ioemu param or something like that??
Thanks in advance for any hints!!

The last working version was 8.40.4-2,
which unfortunately doesn't work with linux kernel 2.6.23.x ..

FireGL cards are still not supported with 8.43 . (See the Catalyst
 7.11 release notes).
Try the RadeonHD drivers (if 3D is not that important for you), or
check phoronix.com/forums , there is a trick (binary patch afaik)
which lets you use the FireGL cards with 8.43
Currently I'm using the VESA driver which fortunately supports the
1920x1200 res,
but wondering why they drop support for some chips with a newer release.
Would there be currently advantage using the radeonhd driver instead of
VESA,
I'm not using any 3D stuff..?

Bruno

(Same with Ubuntu Feisty FWIW)

Put the harddisk in another system
and copy your existing debian installation or install a new one via
deboostrap.
Then chroot into this installation, download compile the linux kernel
v 2.6.22.6

with desired options (SATA AHCI..Attansic Gigabit Ethernet) install it,
also dont forget to install grub on the disk
and put it back into to the P5K SE system.

So with an recent kernel all features of the board work as expected

cron-apt configuration

2007-03-20 Thread Bruno . Voigt
Hi all,

I have several debian/unstable machines with cron-apt installed without
manual changing it's config (as I remember).

All machines but one are just updating the package lists.
The special one is also downloading all upgradeable packages,
so by the time I enter aptitude dist-upgrade all files are already
present.

My question is now: Where may I configure this behaviour ?

Diffing the /etc/cron-apt/* files didn't gave me a clue..

Traffic shaping for PPPoE / DSL, prio for VoIP

Hi all,

what is the best way on a debian/unstable box to set up traffic shaping
on a ppp interface (PPPoE/DSL) so that VoIP-Traffic (Asterisk is running
on this box)
is prioritized in favor of other traffic ?

Which debian packages are suitable for this task?
Are there any sample configurations ?

After dumping the netgear and using a d-link ap instead wpa2 worked for me

After removing kdebluetooth the lock session button works again.

Interesstingly on a system with a fresh debian/unstable install

this file isn't diverted.

After purging and installing kdebluetooth again
there is no more diversion.

So it must have been a upgrade issue in some version of kdebluetooth.

debian/unstable+KDE: screensaver/lock session not working

Hi all,

I have a debian/unstable box running KDE which gets nearly daily patched.
For some months ago the screensaver and KDE kicker lock session button
stopped working.

manual starting of xscreensaver running xscreensaver-command -lock
works.

How does the kdscreensaver session lock mechanism work in detail?
How do teh different components interact?
How can I trace its execution path and check if everything is in place?
What config files are used?

Purging and reinstalling these packages didn't help:

ii kscreensaver 3.5.5-1 additional
screen savers released with KDE
ii kscreensaver-xsavers 3.5.5-1KDE

ii xscreensaver 4.24-5 Automatic

AFAIK, KDE does not use xscreensaver but provides its own screensaver
(and locking) functionality as a part of the kdesktop process (which
 is normally started by kdeinit).

You can check if kdesktop is running with ps -ef | grep [k]desktop.
You should see the process listed as kdesktop [kdeinit]. (It is very
unlikely that kdesktop is not running when you have a KDE session, but
it does not hurt to check.)

yes kdesktop [kdeinit] is there.

How do the different components interact?
How can I trace its execution path and check if everything is in
place?

I don't know all the details, but I know that you should be able to lock
the screen under KDE with the following command:

 dcop kdesktop KScreensaverIface lock

 Maybe that will give you a helpful error message if it does not work;
also check ~/.xession-errors for anything related to the screensaver.

the above dcop invocation just returns immediately without output.
No output in .xsession-errors

  What config files are used?

 ~/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc

 This configuration works for me:
 $ awk '/\[ScreenSaver\]/,/^$/' ~/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc
 [ScreenSaver]
 DPMS-dependent=false
 Enabled=true
 Lock=true
 LockGrace=6
 Saver=KRandom.desktop
 Timeout=300

I adjusted the section in my file to be the same.
It doesn't help.

If all else fails you can create a new user and test if that user can
lock the screen normally. That will at least tell you if you have a
system-wide problem or one related to your regular user's configuration.

Lock Session doesn't work for a new user either.

So what global config shall I check next?

Anthony Campbell [EMAIL PROTECTED] schrieb am 02.02.2007 09:34:50:

I've just acquired a Lenovo Thinkpad Z61M and am still in the process of
setting up Debian on it. It's a beautiful machine, if expensive. Last
time I bought a Thinkpad, about 2 years ago, I deleted all traces of
Windows. This time I decided to keep it, mainly because about once or
twice a year I need to test some Windows programme or other. The reason
quoted above is another which I hadn't thought of.

Keeping Windows was quite a struggle because I had difficulties
shrinking the partition (discussed elsewhere on this list). I finally
managed it after a day and a half. I nearly gave up but it did work in

I installed Debian/unstable on a new Thinkpad Z61p.
Unfortunately my usual procedure using netboot Debian-NetInstaller didn't
work,
because it didnt liked the Broadcom TG3 ethernet.
So I booted from Knoppix v5.11 DVD to
+ first use gparted to shrink the WinXP-Partition to 10GB
+ added new partitions for Linux boot, root and SWAP
+ setup cryptsetup-luks on new root
+ installed debian with debootstrap
+ install grub
+ installed the ATI fglrx-driver from experimental, although the VESA one
also works with 1920x1200
+ using customized kernel 2.6.19.2 from ftp.kernel.org

Thanks to www.thinkwiki.org I got all the devices working,
eg. HDASP hardisk-protection, Intel 3945 WLAN, battery, thinkpad control
stuff (ibm-acpi) etc.

Even the fingerprint reader works using the great young stuff from
thinkfinger.sf.net.

Suspend to Disk via uswusp s2disk sometimes rejects to do it,
I haven't found out the offending driver/circumstances yet.
Also I noticed that after resume the display output is very very slow,
but I expect that to be hopefully fixed in near future by ATI/newer
kernel?!

So overall I'm happy with it.

Negative points:

The Z61p BIOS doesn't proivide a switch to Enable the Core2DUo
VT-functionality yet.
On the X60's and T60 it is already available.
That prevented me to use Xen HVM.
Hopefully Lenovo will add this feature with the next BIOS otherwise it
would be a major cripple of this Core2Duo-System.

I also tried unsuccesfully to start the shrinked WinXP partition under
VMWare server using a separate hardware-profile,
but it keeps dying BSOD upon boot. Anyone managed to do this without a new
clean WinXP-install?

Bruno

How about calling the init.d script from /etc/network/interfaces?

I mean, there is little need for having the deamon running while

should do it.

That is hard to configure reliable because of stuff like openvpn that
also needs a varying timespan to settle etc..
So I would really like to know a way to tell ntpd to not give up on a

Open the Control Center and go to Peripherals Mouse. The setting you
want is on the General tab in the Icons field; it is called
Double-click to open files and folders (select icons on first click)
You can adjust the double-click interval on the Advanced tab.

Re: Xen 3.0.3 and VLAN

2006-11-05 Thread Bruno . Voigt
Hi Tim,

the missing comma after the bridge specification in the vif declaration of
the domU cfg's
seemed to have caused the problems I encountered.

Now I'm using the xen network-dummy script
and have succesfully in dom0 put up 3 bridges belonging to different
VLAN's
and can assign these bridges to some domU's
so that their eth0 belongs to that specific VLAN.

So I reached the goal I wanted. Thanks again!

But I wonder if there is a way to enhance it.
Now dom0 uses xenbr94 directly as it's standard interface to the world.

The default xen network-bridge magic does it somehow different:
it renames eth0 to peth0 and creates a new eth0 which is then added to the
xenbr0
- which is then used by dom0 for communication instead of using a xenbr
directly.

I could not figure out yet how to create such a new interface (using
somehow the netloop driver?)
and have the dom0 use that instead. Googling for netloop etc brought no
enlightment..
Do you know how to do that / by what commands? How is xen creating the
similar vifX.Y interfaces ?

Perhaps you can help me with that..

BTW: I'm also using the ocfs2 filesystem with two nodes and playing around
with live migration.
Is there a way to speed up to make the cisco switches in our network learn
faster that a domU IP is now reachable
on another node's mac ? Either via configuration on the switches or in the
nodes bridge configuration?

WR,
Bruno

my /etc/network/interfaces contains:

Xen 3.0.3 and VLAN

2006-11-02 Thread Bruno . Voigt
Hi,

has anyone experience with a system configuration using xen 3.0.x and vlan
?
The box is connected to a cisco switch via 802.11q and has access to two
vlans.

in /etc/network/interfaces instead of eth0 only eth0.2 is configured.

auto eth0.2
iface eth0.2 inet static
address 10.0.0.1
netmask 255.255.255.0

The Dom0 can succesfully communicate with the outside world,
but no DomU can be started regardless what I'm trying in xend-config.sxp,
the xenbr0 isn't created upon xend-start.

xm create yields:
Error: Device 0 (vif) could not be connected. Backend device not found.

(vif-script vif-bridge)
(network-script 'network-bridge netdev=eth0')
or
(network-script 'network-bridge netdev=eth0.2')

TIA for any hints,
Bruno

etch: KDE screensaver not working

2006-08-04 Thread Bruno Voigt
Hi,

on my debian/etch system with KDE - which I continiously aptitiude
(dist-)upgrade every few days since pre-sarge,
I have the problem that the screensaver does not kick-in. automatically.

Via the KDE control center it is enabled (empty screen) and set to start
after twenty minutes and lock after 120 seconds.

How may I find out why it doesn't work on this system? What config files
should I check?
On similar other systems of mine it works as expected.

TIA for any hints,
Bruno

Any success in installing Linux Lotus Notes Client 7.0.1 on Etch?

2006-07-24 Thread Bruno Voigt
Hi all,
the Linux-Version of the Lotus Notes client 7.0.1 is now available.
It is intended for Redhat 4 with Mozilla 1.7.

Had someone already success in installing it on Etch?
For me the installer exits after complaining that it could not validate
the mozilla version,
although the latest mozilla packages are installed.

running the installer with strace didn't provide any hints to me.

Perhaps someone already had more success?

TIA,
Bruno

sid: KDE menu entries lost how to recreate?

2005-08-27 Thread Bruno . Voigt
Hi all,

I'm running debien/unstable and performing nearly daily an aptitude
upgrade.
Before ~ 2 weeks I lost all KDE Start menu entries.
Only bookmars, exec command, start new session, lock desktop, logout are
still there.

Is there a procedure to recreate the menu entries for all installed
appliactions?!

TIA,
Bruno
