Chromium and more being broken, stop the breaker

2024-12-07 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,

Some is offering de-installs of chromium in the normal debian update
process, they need to be stopped.

This morning someone was trying to get away with de-installing
chromium-common and c++ software using the debian update process.

They need to be stopped forthwith.

Good luck.

Switch user causes screen to go blank

2024-06-22 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,

When ones does a switch user from the application launch button then the
screen goes blank and it stays that way until re-booted.

This seems to have been introduced in Debian 12.

Looking around there is no fix to this, only work arounds of varying
effectiveness.

One work around is to do a command line

xdg-screensaver lock

There might be something one can click on somewhere to have the same effect.

With this I've so far been able to start another session without loosing
anything.
To go back to the first login I had to do a ctrl-alt-f2 then back using
ctrl-alt-f7.

This is a bug. It needs to be fixed.

Initiate a screen saver lock then hack away at ctrl-alt-whatever until
one has by-passed the "issues".

If there's a better way or actual fix one would interested to know about it.

Cheers

More printers in the Brother printer-driver-brlaser package

2023-10-23 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,

There are drivers for more Brother laser printers in the package
printer-driver-brlaser .

One doesn't have to put up with Brother's atrocious install script to
set up the DCP-1610W.
The driver package from the Debian repository doesn't produce the
extraneous squiggles and blobs either. Not so far.

Good luck.

For syslog : apt-get install rsyslog

2023-07-06 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

To restore a readable and accessible syslog in Debian 12.0 enter

   apt-get install rsyslog

One doesn't need to do anything with the journal suite.
I installed rsyslog-doc as well. It is in:
/usr/share/doc/rsyslog-doc/html

The logs appear to be set up to rotate etc already in:
/etc/logrotate.conf and /etc/logrotate.d/

This seems to restore other logs as well.

To implement and maintain a system there should be a text log which is
immediately accessible.
The current default logging is unsatisfactory and needs to include a
text log.

One can easily stop it later. This can be done with rsyslog etc already...

Where is Debian 11 installer for amd64 that works please ?

2022-01-21 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings

I have been trying to install Debian 11 on an Asus from 2018 with i5
using amd64 install DVD's with 11.1.0 and 11.2.0 and a net install CD
with 11.2.0 . All three have fallen over because of installer bugs.

There is currently a Debian 9 system on the laptop that went on
without difficulty.

Am trying to install it to an external hard disk so it can be tested and
debugged without much damage to the running Debian 9 system.

The Debian 11.2.0 net install CD is the unofficial one with non free
firmware. Good to have all the drivers in one go.

It comes straight off the Debian website, is unmodified and is on a CD.

Where/how do I get one that works please ?

An alternate plan is to install from a Debian 10 net inst CD, non free,
amd64. This one went on to another machine without difficulty . Then
wait and see whether the Debian 12 installer is any better.

Thanks.

Where is a list of kernel messages ?

2021-10-18 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,

Where is there a list of linux kernel messages ?
So far not found on :

 - google
 - Debian linux or kernel documentation, specifically linux-doc etc.
 - not seem in /usr/share/doc

If they are there then it's time for the discovery process to be shortened.

Two messages that I'm interested in are :

   kernel: [ 6997.564065] sd 3:0:0:0: [sdc] tag#3 data cmplt err -71
uas-tag 4 inflight: CMD

   kernel: [ 6997.564108] usb 2-1.4: stat urb: status -71

The machine currently has Debian 9 and a new disk dock and new internal
hard disk set to go in the disk dock.
The messages may be a result of the OS being too back level for the
newer hardware. A Debian 11 implementation is in process.

Thanks.

Debian 11 freezes/hangs after boot

2021-10-11 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,

Installed the Debian 11 Live DVD on a USB stick then a DVD.
Both hardly respond to the keyboard or mouse after some minutes.
Seen the full desktop once. The desktop usually stops when the pointer
appears on the grey screen.
A ctrl-alt-f2 and ctrl-alt-f3 sometimes shows a prompt at first then
stops after the second or third command.
The escape key sometimes shows a usual boot sequence without any error
indications.

Got a peek at the bottom page of the syslog which had a repeated
sequence of "PCIe Bus Error " messages . Not sure if these are relevant.

There are plenty of "failed to start Journal Service" messages but these
might not be relevant either. Scattered on the ctrl-alt-f1 , f2 and f3
screens.

On one file on the last page saw a number of messages which included

localhost systemd[1]: Condition check resulted in First Boot
Complete being skipped

After that there were a number of further "Condition check resulted in
 being skipped" messages.

These, at a guess, look like they may be relevant.

The machine is an Asus X541U, Intel I5 chipset. Three and a half years
old. No modifications.
It loaded Debian 9 without problems. The wifi/blue tooth card is turned
off because of voluminous error messages.

Saw on forums.debian.net a possible fix :

edit /etc/default/grub so that it has the line

 GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash reboot=pci"

the "reboot=pci" is the necessary change.

Any comments ? Does this work ?
Thanks.

I intended to see what surprises may be lurking within by trying to run
the Debian 11 Live DVD, amd64, KDE.

The current plan is to collect possible fixes then install Debian 11
amd64 KDE on an external disk so I can get at the logs and generally
experiment with it. When it works sufficiently then install it on the
main system.

Hex editor with ASCII line underneath the line of hex.

2019-10-15 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,

Which hex editor shows a line of hex with the corresponding ASCII under
the line of hex ?

Having the ASCII off to the right is of limited use.

Looking at a formatted dump one sees the ASCII, EBCDIC etc *under* the
hex and not far away on the other side of the page.

shed is the closest so far with the hex in a column down the page and
the corresponding ASCII etc next to it. It is not that easy to read,
having the hex across the page with the corresponding ASCII etc directly
underneath is preferred.

Brother DCP-1510 drivers wipe /opt on install

2019-06-26 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,

The Brother DCP-1510 printer drivers etc installer wiped /opt except
for it self .
The same as over four years ago. One shudders to think that one actually
pays them to produce that.

The instructions to do before running the installer use two commands
which are not to be found on the system or repository; lppasswd and
aa-complain. Did none of the pre-install instructions.

The installer ran to completion. It did install three 32 bit libraries
for c and c++ .

The test page printed ok.

On a previous release of Debian neither lp nor lpadmin in /etc/group

Wifi/Bluetooth from Realtek in Asus X541U does "correctable" errors.

2019-02-10 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,

Buying the said Asus X541U notebook, Microsoft Windows does not show
errors but other people complain of spotty performance from the Realtek
Wifi/Bluetooth unit in it.

Install Debian 9 then the console shows a stream of "correctable
errors" from the said Realtek Wifi/Bluetooth unit. Fortunately the file
systems here are large so /var does not fill.

Suggest installing the hwinfo package to give useful information about
what is going on in this machine. Haven't seem any mention of that anywhere.

The pcie address/port/etc has a 1c.5 on the right. This is the same on
all units. They do not all have loose boards or hardware faults.
It appears that Intel has upgraded the processor but that the Realtek
Wifi/Bluetooth unit has not kept up, it is a back level or otherwise
sufficiently defective unit.

One could turn off the error notifications but some consider these
necessary information.

Other people tie themselves in knots experimenting with alternate
drivers but not to any useful effect.

One could also replace the Realtek Wifi/Bluetooth unit with one that
works properly.
Is there a suitable replacement that a technician could install in the
computer ?

At the moment I'm inclined to blacklist the driver rtl8723be and use a
wifi dongle in a USB port when necessary.

Brother DCP-1510 driver install script empties /opt

2014-11-21 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,

Set up a Brother DCP-1510 laser printer and went to the Brother website
for the drivers and install script for Debian systems. Downloaded the
drivers and install script then ran the install script.

It seemed to work without significant errors and completed with no error
messages and the correct test page was printed from cups. Have Debian 7
using gnome classic.

Later use showed that the previous contents of /opt had disappeared and
there was only a brother directory in it. It did have firefox and
thunderbird in it. These were duly restored.

Haven't noticed anything else broken, yet.

The Brother driver install script has a serious bug and should not be
used unmodified.
This is a major black mark for Brother, something for them to correct
forthwith.

Grub2 missed Microsoft Windows 8.1 during Debian install

2014-05-24 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,

Grub2 missed Microsoft Windows 8.1 on the internal hard disk during the
install of Debian 7.1 to an external hard disk. It failed to detect
another operating system in the mbr and was primed to over write it. A
trap waiting to be sprung.

This was on a Toshiba C50D-A with the UEFI settings all disabled and so
on in the "Bios" so it would boot non UEFI media. Does that properly.

The install worked well and Debian booted and worked well except for
cosmetic screen effects when it changes environments. All AMD processor
et al chips, no Intel or NVidia.

No tweaks or additional action to get Debian going.

The external hard disk is a USB3 unit connected to the notebook's USB3
port. Seat of the pants impression of overall performance doing web
browsing and word processing is no noticeable waits. USB handling has
improved.

Cheers.

Default kernel network variables, sysctl, not secure enough.

2014-02-01 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,

Did a security audit on Debian 7 using tiger and found some less than
secure settings for network variables in the kernel.

One of the variables flagged was

net.ipv4.conf.all.rp_filter .

This and the rest in this group can be set in /etc/sysctl.conf . The
commented out values in this file look for all the world like the
correct settings for a reasonably secure system. The default values are
different and leave openings that may be exploited.

The "documentation" referred to at the top of /etc/sysctl.conf has no
useful information in it. Haven't found any man pages yet that define
these variables.
Had a look at www.kernel.org/doc/man-pages but this was not sufficiently
informative.

Had a look in /usr/share/doc . Didn't notice anything. Looked through
the package library for kernel documentation, information on sysctl and
more besides :

  apt-cache search kernel

this yielded a list :

  linux-doc-3.2
  debian-kernel-handbook
  linux-doc

Installed them and looked for man pages, nothing found, then through
/usr/share/doc again. This had a number of extra files in it that seemed
relevant but the variables set were not found as such. A look in

  /usr/share/doc/linux-doc-32/Documentation/networking/ip-sysctl.txt

defines the values for the previously mentioned variable, with rp_filter
at the end of it. The variable itself was not listed in this file so a
grep did not find it. One had to look through each possible relevant
file, a number of them (by the way), and discover that the variable
definitions were listed according to their relevant directory in /proc .
In this case :

/proc/sys/net/ipv4/conf/all/rp_filter

The actual value in /proc , the one being used by the system, was the
default which needs to be tightened up.

Editing /etc/sysctl.conf and uncommenting most of the settings will
improve the situation.

Someone put a README* in /etc/sysctl.d that suggested one put a
local.conf file in /etc/sysctl.d . This may be a better way to do it
but isn't documented anywhere, I think. It is less than obvious and may
be hard to find later.

Putting sysctl commands in start-up scripts may be challenging to find
later but site procedures vary. The variables can be set using sysctl as
well.

How about modifying the supplied /etc/sysctl.conf so that the currently
commented out settings are uncommented since these are obviously better
and as recommended by various bodies as sound practise etc.

No need to take these ideas on the chin Bob :-)

Cheers,

No keyboard and mouse clicks after Debian 7 install

2013-09-28 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,

Installed Debian 7.1.0 , amd64, seemed to go without any problems, but
after the boot it only shows a watch symbol, this can be moved by the
mouse but the keyboard and mouse clicks do nothing. Ctrl-Alt-F1 does
nothing.

Powered done and used rescue OS to look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log . No
relevant errors or warnings. Did see a number of

[mi] EQ overflow

messages. Have Nvidia video chipset on Asus PRO50G notebook.

Had the same problem on Debian 6 install, no difference according to my
notes.

What fixed that was to modify /etc/default/grub file by changing line

 GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nouveau.noaccel=1"

then run the relevant grub command to put changes to this file into effect.

Would this fix apply to Debian 7 as well ?

Strange that the bug hasn't been fixed. Linus T. has a point regarding
Nvidia ...
Good thing Debian 7 was installed to an external hard disk first, so the
production Debian 6 is unaffected, thought there might be problems with
the graphics.

How to install Debian 7 to external hard disk

2013-08-26 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,

Is there a preferred way to install Debian 7 from DVD to an external
(USB) hard disk ?

The whole external hard disk is to be used instead of the internal hard
disk. This is to experiment with the new release (and discover fish
hooks like graphics that don't work) while leaving the internal hard
disk with the production Debian 6 on it completely alone.

One then boots from either the external hard disk or the internal hard disk.

A live Debian is not to be set up. Grub and the rest of the boot
processing also goes on the external hard disk.

To set this up, at what stage in the install process does one actually
put the new release on to the external disk ?
Does one need to also tell the install program where to put grub ? or
does it do that automatically ?
Is there any other special configuration one needs to do to properly put
the new release on to the external hard disk ?

It is vastly preferable not to unplug the internal hard disk or
otherwise disrupt the functioning system.

Of course the internal hard disk will be backed up before the attempted
install ...

Thanks for any information.

Its an xfce4 based system. The root shell, sometimes shells, overlay

Users have to enter a logon and password to login.

The people there have been asked to collect information, when the root
window appears,

by entering :

netstat -a -p -W -v -e -e > netstatdatetime
ps -ef > psdatetime

which will hopefully narrow down the process, parent process and so on.
Haven't noticed anything in particular in /var/log about the ip address
for that terminal.

Did ldd on the firefox executable and it pointed to some libraries in

which is definitely in /lib , 64 bit by default. Hunted around for a 64
bit firefox and found one mentioned on the firefox support website in

there are two other English "variants".

Worked like a charm after this one went in. Iceweasel is too far behind

Setting /tmp size.

2012-02-28 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,

The 100 Mb recommended size for /tmp is far too small and out of date.
Some of the others including / are also too small.

I ran out of space for krita, had a look, and decided 5Gb would be a
safe over estimate. krita now works.

Prior to the /tmp partition increase I put a symlink in /tmp for
Krita's big directory to the partition with the home directories which
happens to have plenty of space. Crude but effective. You might have
difficulty with variable directory names.

There's plenty of disk here and no need to scrimp so over sizing /tmp is
straight forward.

The recommended / size looks smallish, 1 Gb is ample, here. Better too
much for / than too little. Here have partitions for /, swap, /tmp, /var
and /usr . The home directories are a symlink to /usr because the system
does little or no writing to /usr so its no disaster if it fills. Have
only one hard disk.

Good luck,

Problem flushing buffers for USB devices.

2010-12-10 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,
The flushing of buffers for devices plugged into a USB port
is problematic. When writing data to a USB stick it usually took two
attempts to write a directory to a USB stick. The first attempt didn't
show the directory was there when it was removed then plugged back in.

I then used sync a couple of times to flush the buffers after write then
lo and behold the data remained on the USB stick after the first write.

This is a problem, that data should not need a follow up sync for it to
be properly written to the USB stick.

Recently a dialup modem was plugged in to the computer using a serial to
USB cable. This worked up to a point. Sometimes it is very slow
especially on thunderbird (icedove) and on some websites, especially
google's. After doing a sync every couple of seconds one notices that
the read-data light on the modem comes on soon after the sync command
and the data from website comes much more quickly.

That is a bug which needs to fixed; one shouldn't have to run a script
to do a sync every couple of seconds just so that USB traffic goes to
and fro as it should.

Is there an adequate fix ? Have Debian 5.04 here on an Asus notebook, a
PRO50G . Problem especially noticeable on iceweasel and icedove from
this release. Didn't noticed any rise in CPU or memory use for any of
the processes, not the kernel processes with a k prefix either. Nothing
stood out on the syslog or anything else in /var/log on an initial

ksuspend_usbd : what does this daemon do ?

2009-11-07 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,
What does the daemon ksuspend_usb do ? I'm making a list of the
back ground processes and what they do then will post it here. Save others
hunting around for what what little there is.
Haven't found any lists on-line anywhere yet. Apparently there's an
O'Reilly book that lists daemons and functions but haven't see it anywhere
local.
 Thanks in advance.

Apt : adding etch CD's to lenny apt archive

2009-09-14 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,
I'm trying to add a debian 4.0 CD set to a debian 5.0 apt
archive using apt-cdrom but the system doesn't recognise the debian 4
CD's.

In the release notes for Debian 5.0 there's a section on problems with
reading etch cdroms on a lenny system. The suggestions were done but
the etch cd's were not read.

CD's from a sarge, debian 3.1, were recognised but failed to be added to
the archive for signature/key related reasons.

Below is the /etc/apt/sources.list file that is supposed to control
the apt archive access followed by the trace of an attempt to add a sarge
CD to the apt archive and lastly the trace of an attempt to add an etch CD
to the apt archive.

*** list active lines of /etc/apt/sources.list on debian 5.0 system

What is a method that works for reading previous debian release CD's

Thanks in advance.

Disabling bluetooth and wireless

2009-07-07 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,
What is a method for disabling bluetooth and wireless on a
laptop with Debian 5.0 ? The radio link switch on the side can be moved
accidentally so the system needs to be modified to stop use of bluetooth
and wireless.
I disabled a number of daemons to do with bluetooth and wireless, can
the computer now no longer be accessed by an external station and will
an application trying to use bluetooth or wireless fail to do so ?
Ethernet is not needed so it can be broken.
The system uses PPP over a USB port and then to the serial port on a modem
to do dialup etc to an ISP.

The list of daemons disabled is :

  networking
  network-manager
  network-manager-dispatcher
  bluetooth
  ifupdown
  avahi-daemon
  wpa-ifupdown

These would all have been disabled anyway during the lockdown phase in
the implementation. Securing wireless and bluetooth needed to be done
sooner because the drivers for both are active so its possible that
crackers etc in the area can penetrate this system at any time.

Do the drivers for wireless and bluetooth need to be disabled ? perhaps
using modprobe or something else ? If so, how does one do this and is it
documented anywhere ?

Debian is great but the documentation is sparse and often widely
distributed. Exactly what the daemons listed above do and the effect is
of disabling them has not been discovered yet.

 Information websites that
require a response to their port access attempts above 31000 can't be
accessed by this particular system. This includes some of the Debian
websites, time this "feature" was removed.

 Thanks in advance.

vmsplice bug, javascript vulnerable ?

2008-03-26 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,
Regarding the root compromise in Debian 4.0R1, DSA 1491-1,
relating to vserver and vmsplice. Can one disable this feature or not
enable it, without breaking the kernel or anything else ?
Is it possible for remote programs, say a website that one is browsing
with javascript turned on [shudder], to do the vserver/vmsplice root
compromise or otherwise use it to degrade the system in some way ?
Thanks in advance.

xconfig for Dell LCD's during etch install

2007-09-25 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,
Is the Xconfig* file in X11, or whatever Xorg (?) uses,
correctly setup during the install of Debian 4.0r1 on a Dell 3000 box
that has a LCD display ?
I ask because Debian 3.1 failed to detect the characteristics of said
LCD displays causing some extra running around to find out why and what
to do about it. Copied an ok XConfig* file from a knoppix system which
despite its small size and being a live CD did correctly figure out all
the hardware.
 Thanks in advance.

Re: kernel-image-2.4.27-2-386 update

2006-04-01 Thread C.T.F. Jansen

Greetings,

On the matter of updating the 2.4.27 kernel on the intel 386
architecture, to apply the fixes for DSA10181-1 (CVE-2005-0449). Which

of the current files in
   security.debian.org/pool/updates/main/k/kernel-image-2.4.27-i386

should one download to apply the fix ? Is this the correct directory ?
Are other directories used as well ?
I'd rather find out the exact files needed then download them then
let apt-get get to work on them in my machine. The dial-in line here
isn't that hot ... There's also the matter of using

root over the internet; never.

Thanks Joris H and Tomas B for bringing the matter up.
