Sony SDT-7000 Tape Drive & DDS2 Tapes?

2002-06-13 Thread Carlos Laviola
[ Please Cc me on replies; I'm not subscribed to debian-user. ]

Hey folks,

I have a Sony SDT-7000 tape drive that can, theoretically, record up to
8 Gb of data on a DDS2 tape. However, I can only get it to store 4 Gb
on any DDS2 tape I try (4 Gb == max for DDS1, iirc).

Anyway, anyone has info on this? Have you experienced this problem
before?

Here's the logs from the kernel bootup:

Vendor: SONY Model: SDT-7000 Rev: 0300
Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
st: Version 20020205, bufsize 32768, wrt 30720, max init. bufs 4, s/g segs 16
Attached scsi tape st0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0

Thank you,
Carlos.

Xerox 212 printer on Debian (*NIX, actually)?

2001-08-01 Thread Carlos Laviola
Hello, folks,

I'm stuck with a problem: there's this Xerox 212 printer I have to get
working on a Debian server that just won't print PostScript. It prints
normal (ASCII) text, but it refuses to print PostScript properly --
either by throwing raw PS code, or by refusing to print (depending on
what filter I'm trying at the moment). It seems to be PCL 6 compatible.
I'm using lprng and magicfilter on the server.

Any ideas?

Thank you,
Carlos.

NIS problem

2001-07-24 Thread Carlos Laviola
[ Please Cc, I'm not subscribed to -user right now. ]

Hello, everyone,

Can someone give me a hand with this NIS problem?

apache:~# su - claviola
su: Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info.
(Ignored)
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

This also makes me unable to login as a NIS user, so it is not just a
silly warning. I get this on /var/log/auth.log:

Jul 24 18:24:48 apache PAM_unix[21531]: check pass; user unknown
Jul 24 18:24:48 apache PAM_unix[21531]: authentication failure; LOGIN(uid=0) ->
claviola for login service
Jul 24 18:24:51 apache login[21531]: FAILED LOGIN (1) on `tty6' FOR `claviola',
Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info.

Note that I've read, re-read, searched Google, and done just about everything
I could to make sure there was nothing wrong here. I compared my config
with at least a couple of other NIS clients, which are working perfectly.

Any ideas?

Aliasing an IP address? [semi-OT]

2001-05-11 Thread Carlos Laviola
Hello people,

Here's the thing: I have a small network at work (4 computers, each one
using a 10.0.0.x address). The Debian server is 10.0.0.1. There's a
notebook at 10.0.0.4.

However, the guy with the notebook already has a small network at home,
which he wouldn't like to change to suit the IP addresses of work. He also
doesn't like to always change the IP to 10.0.0.4 and wait for windows to
boot one more time before he can start actually working, so he'd like me
to, somehow, make his home network' IP address be recognized as local at
the debian box. Is there a easy way to do that? My idea was to just alias
his IP to the one he is supposed to use (10.0.0.4), so that the server
thinks that traffic is coming from that IP regardless of what IP is set on
his windoze box (even though it would be fixed). If you understand my
question and know the answer, please help. :-)

Thanks,
Carlos.

[BTW: If you don't mind, Cc to me, I'm not subscribed to -user atm.]

Well, try other JRE's, like Blackdown's (www.blackdown.org), or IBM's (that's
the one I use: available at www.ibm.com/java). And, of course, there is Sun's
own JRE/JDK (which I have never used), available somewhere at www.sun.com. Note
that Kaffe is _very_ outdated, that's why I'm recommending this alternatives to
you.

Funny, I tried that command myself and it didn't work. Maybe it is trying to
output to the regular speakers, not the PC Speaker.

Please, avoid posting in HTML and try to write in English, because that's the
language most of the users understand. Anyway, about locales: You have to first
edit /etc/locale.gen, then uncomment the locales you'd like to see compiled (in
your case, es), then run /usr/sbin/locale-gen as root. Then, all you have to
do is to export LANG=es and LC_ALL=es. You can do that in a billion of
different ways, but you can just put this at the bottom of your /etc/profile:

LANG=es
LC_ALL=es
export LANG LC_ALL

patch -p1 -R < patch-2.4.2-ac20
then
patch -p1 < patch-2.4.2-ac24

All ac patches are made against the vanilla kernel they refer to - that means
that you have to unpatch the older ones in order to patch the vanilla kernel
with new ones. BTW, following "ac" is 100% insane :)

Well, try something along this:

nmap -v -v -P0 -O A.B.C.1/24

Keep in mind that it will only scan machines in the "A.B.C.X" class C - i.e if
you're scanning 10.1.2.X, it won't find machines under 10.1.3.X, of course.

Hope this helps.

Not only that, but it also manages to be incredibly more bloated than SOffice
5.2 itself, and doesn't include any printing support (they're trying to
implement a free alternative to SO 5.2's old printing driver). However, I must
admit that it is very good looking - supports my xfstt-supplied TT fonts et al.

Get the linux source, and untar it in /usr/src. It will create /usr/src/linux,
which will have the files you need to compile this driver, which, by the way,
is supported by the version of OSS that comes into the kernel.

This is crazy, drop this linking thing you did and do as I say, it will work.

copy and paste the evil thing (with headers, of course) and it will report it

Yes; security.d.o, aka non-US (pandora.d.o, in fact), is located in at the
Leiden University, in the Netherlands. Wichert posted a message to -devel
yesterday explaining that there was a power outage, and that he went there to
fix it. non-US is connecting normally here already.

Indeed: copy ~/.ssh/identity.pub to the remote machine's

Did you try to link the X server like this:

In a nutshell:

fetch linux-X.Y.Z.tar.[gz/bz2]
put it in /usr/src, unpack, make (x)(menu)config, yada yada
apt-get install kernel-package
make-kpkg --revision Custom.1.00 kernel_image

If you make changes to your kernel, you might want to increase its debian
revision:

make-kpkg clean
make-kpkg --revision Custom.2.00 kernel_image

And so on.

After everything has compiled successfully:

cd ..
dpkg -i ./kernel-image*.deb (assuming this is your first custom kernel, of
course)

Answer the simple questions, done.

You *definately* should have ifconfig, which, by the way, lives in /sbin (thus,
it is not in regular users' $PATH by default). If you *really* screwed it up,
download the "libc6" package again (by hand - do NOT remove it first, then
install) - and reinstall it (dpkg -i libc6*.deb). If it complains about
something (dependancies, for instance), try dpkg --force-depends -i libc6*.deb.

Re: [OT] napster login failures...

2001-03-11 Thread Carlos Laviola
Music City (www.musiccity.com) opennap servers are much better. They sum
overall 5 times more songs than mainstream napster, besides the fact that there
are over 30 servers linked. It shows up in Napigator's list, too (you can see
that using Lopster, lopster.sourceforge.net, which I intend to package for
debian as soon as I get my account. Even though, upstream supplies debs)

In fact, you don't. You can either install the whole communicator package
(apt-get install communicator), or just Netscape Navigator (apt-get install
navigator).

I do not know how to run Genesis games with xmess (I know it is possible, but
never bothered to install it). You might find some useful information in
MAME/MESS' own website, and also at http://www.mame.dk. I am using DGen-SDL to

A good alternative to pump is dhcpcd. Never had a problem with it before (I've

AFAIK, this is named's normal behaviour. When you boot the box it dumps this

Why don't you just put it in your ~/.bash_profile? I have this alias in mine:

ls='ls --color=auto -F -b -T 0 -N --show-control-chars'

(note that some of the options in that ls are just there to make it handle
accents more properly)

exim & mutt

2000-11-23 Thread Carlos Laviola
Hello,

I have a dial-up machine and want to properly configure it to send mail
using exim (mutt uses it). I receive my POP messages normally with it
(and other mail clients), but I don't know how can I properly configure
exim, specially to handle the fact that my machine's hostname is dynamic
(it tries to use its local hostname, which doesn't exist, since it is
just "debian"). What should I do? Thank you.

Issues with X 4.0

2000-11-13 Thread Carlos Laviola
Hello,

I have just upgraded the X Window System to version 4.0. I was expecting
to have a few problems with that, but the fact is that I just can't run
it anymore (and I desperately need to!)... I tried to run dexter using
several different settings. I tried simple, medium and expert Vsync and
Hsync settings, but none worked. (I hand configured X 3.3.6 normally,
using the values that come in my monitor's manual).

My configuration is:
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 3
Video Card: Trident TGUI 9680
Mouse: Genius (3 buttons) (looks like it gets correctly selected when
using the auto mode)

If you can help, please do. Attached to this message is the log of the X
session, and the configuration file dexter made. Since I am not
subscribed to this list, a Cc or Bcc of the reply would be greatly
appreciated.

Thank you, Carlos.

gnupg help

2000-09-17 Thread Carlos Laviola
Hello people,

I know this is not Debian-related in any way, so please forgive me for
posting here. My question is: is there a way to change a e-mail address in
a gnupg key? My previous ISP (sol.com.br) is gone now, so I am using a new
one, with a new e-mail address, and would like to display that change in my
gnupg keys. How can I do that, if possible?
Thanks.
