Hi, is it possible that this errors are due to trying to install 9.1

Module-assistant error when installing fglrx ATI proprietary driver. (Debian Sid).

2009-02-16 Thread Carlos Parada
Hi, I'm trying to install the last ATI proprietary driver which I've
downloaded from AMD webpage. I did a sh

the resulting DEB packages with dpkg.

Then, I've run module-assistant prepare and module-assistant auto-install

/etc/issue still showing Lenny after upgrading to Sid...

2009-02-09 Thread Carlos Parada
Hi, I've recently upgrading my Debian flavour from Testing to Unstable but
I'm still getting reference to Lenny:

car...@debian:~$ cat /etc/issue

car...@debian:~$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID:Debian
Description:Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 (lenny)

By the way, here is my sources.list in case it matters (obviously, I did an
aptitude update aptitude dist-upgrade after changing the file.

car...@debian:~$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list

# Compiz Fusion

Why is it showing that I'm using Lenny?

 It's a known issue, see http://bugs.debian.org/508772. If you're
relying on the output of lsb_release you can create an /etc/lsb-release
 file like this (mine):

 --8---cut here---start-8---
 DISTRIB_ID=Debian
 DISTRIB_RELEASE=UNRELEASED
 DISTRIB_CODENAME=sid
 DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=Debian GNU/Linux
 --8---cut here---end---8---

Otherwise it's mainly a cosmetic problem.

Sound and video freezes intermitently in Debian Lenny.

2008-07-18 Thread Carlos Parada
Hi, I've got a very weird problem with audio and video playing in my Debian
Lenny laptop.

It all started 3 or 4 days ago... now when I play music with Rythmbox or
when I play streaming videos en Youtube, for example, in Firefox, both
freeze intermitently... I mean, audio/video freezes for an indetermined
number of seconds and then recovers... It's really annoying.

Can you help me troubleshooting this issue?

 See this part

 dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/fglrx-driver_1%
 3a8-4-1_i386.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite `/usr/lib/libfglrx_dm.a', which is also in package
fglrx-driver-dev ? That is your problem.

When you see this come up on any package, the next thing to do is:

 apt-get -f install

If that does not work do this:

 dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/fglrx-driver_1%
 3a8-4-1_i386.deb or run dpkg -i
 --force-overwrite /path/stated/in/apt-get -f install/

The problem is another package owns the file dpkg is trying to
overwrite and by default dpkg will not do that. This is a badly
packaged .deb (or the one that owns it is).

You will run into this problem when you do a dist-upgrade from stable to
testing or from testing to stable. This work-around does not fix
anything, it just forces dpkg to ignore some other package is using this
file as a config and dpkg will write to it.

Anytime you run into issued during a dist-upgrade that do not allow the
progression of installed programs to keep going, just run apt-get -f
install, then aptitude update, then aptitude upgrade, then aptitude
dist-upgrade to continue. It may take several attempts to get it. In
fact at some point, you might even have to reboot to continue (due to
low level packages having been replaced and the old ones running in
memory no longer have any config files).

Re: Etch -- Upgrading X.Org to 7.2

Hi, Wei. I think I'm definitely not going to upgrade to Sid anytime soon so
I'll stick to Lenny for the moment.

Thanks!

Re: Etch -- Upgrading X.Org to 7.2

2008-03-06 Thread Carlos Parada
Finally I ended up upgrading to Lenny and with the new version of X.Org I
have no problem.

Nevertheless, I've been reading the Debian FAQ and It says that Unstable is
recommended over Testing (Lenny) for a variety of reasons... so I'm now
thinking on an upgrading to Sid (still thinking).

Is the upgrading to Sid process similar to Lenny upgrading? I mean, if I
change the entries in my sources.list from lenny to sid and testing to
unstable, then applying apt-get update apt-get dist-upgrade I finally
ended up in Sid distribution or is it necessary something more?

Hi! I'm currently using Debian Stable ('Etch') and obviously my X.Orgversion is

Is there any problem with manually upgrading X.Org to 7.2??

Re: Etch -- Upgrading X.Org to 7.2

2008-03-05 Thread Carlos Parada
I don't find X.Org 7.2 on Backports. Is there any other way of upgrading
X.Org but keeping Debian Stable distro?

I'm so hesitant of upgrading to Lenny, I've heard there are almost no
security updates aside from other disadvantages.

You'll have to look at backports.org, I think. Or upgrade to Lenny.

Re: ATI Radeon X1400 + Debian Etch + Compiz Fusion = White Screen

2008-03-03 Thread Carlos Parada
Well, I am registered in Compiz forums and I posted a thread with my
problems installing Compiz but I didnt receive too much help.

I think I've tried everything in an atempt to configure my graphics card for
running Compiz Fusion and I'm really going nuts with this issue, everytime I
try something new (based on tutorials or forum posts from the web) I always
get that freaking white screen... with Beryl too.

Missing option in GNOME Control Center

2008-02-14 Thread Carlos Parada
Hello, I've noticed that in my GNOME Control Center the Window Manager
capplet is missing... Any hint?

Thanks

Re: Missing option in GNOME Control Center

Hi, Micaela.

I've recently installed Debian 4.0 'Etch' as a VMWARE Virtual Machine (under
Windows XP).
I don't really know if some time that capplet was present, I've executed
GNOME Control Center for the first time a couple of days ago.
I've performed the updates that Update Manager suggested me and installed
some software like Compiz, Xfe File Manager, Sawfish, Enlightenment...

 hi,
what do you do before the Window Manager capplet is missing, please?
 Do you update the system?
Do you change anything in the system or in the desktop manager?
Do you install any new software or update any software?

 Regards,
