When I got my V700 working I removed the 'usb' line and the "usb
/dev/usb/scanner0" line.

I'd guess you also need to change the "usb 0x4b8 0x110" to "usb 0x04b8
0x012c" to match what sane-find-scanner returned.

You sound like me to an extent. I run lots of command line under
fvwm2. However I do have Gnome libraries installed as there are a
number of Gnome applications that I use, thus if I need a file manager
I use Nautilus.

Sane *always* does this to me too! sane-find-scanner finds a scanner
but nothing actually sees it. I just got my Epson V700 working, what
I had to to was add the following line to /etc/sane.d/epson.conf:-

usb 0x04b8 0x012c

... and comment everything else out.

Obviously you need to put the values for your scanner there, that's
"usb 0x04b8 0x0118".

Yes, install docutils and you get the various RST converters.

I had the *opposite* problem.

The motherboard was nearly all SATA with a 'legacy' JMicron PATA
interface. The Linux kernels available at the time (September last
year) didn't support the JMicron PATA interface so although I could
boot from a CD the installers couldn't read the CD.

I overcame the problem by buying a SATA CD drive.

Surely nearly all routers (and who uses anything except a router
nowadays?) have web configuration so they don't care what OS you're
using. Just pointer your browser at the router and set it up! :-)

That's what I do (ssh to my hosting provider where I have shell
access) and read my mail locally there using mutt.

mutt works fairly sensibly "out of the box" in my experience.

Also why do you say you'd have to use IMAP with mutt to get what you
want? Unless you need to be able to read (using mutt) your mail from
several different systems I don't see how it would help you.

I think you have your numbers a bit confused! :-)

"16 bit" colour is 65536 colours, so it's *more* colours than "256
colour". 8-bit colour is 256 colours.

I think the most colour bits you can have is 24-bit which is 16777216,
16 million or so colours. I don't think any PC display go to 256-bit
colour yet.

So what do you want exactly, better than 16-bit (which is probably
24-bit or trucolor) or less than 16 bit, which is 8-bit?
